Trail Blazers crack FA pool: sign Odom
TrailBlazers.com | October 19th, 2009
PORTLAND - The Los Angeles Lakers couldn't reach terms on a new contract with sixth man Lamar Odom, after a month of frosty negotiations that might have troubled the team and its fans more than just about anything they saw during last season's playoff drive to the championship. “I gotta be honest. I always wanted to come back to the Lakers because we won the championship,” Odom said in press conference, at the Rose Garden. “I was playing with the most fluid, talented center in the world in Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum's coming back and of course Kobe (Bryant). And there was the opportunity to play with Ron Artest, a guy I've known 16 years. It was all coming together for me, but I wasn't thinking in my wife and my kids. I only have words of gratitude to Phil (Jackson) and the Lakers organization, but it was time to move on, for me and my family.”
Sources with knowledge of the talks can confirm that Odom and the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday agreed to a four-year deal worth up to $33 million if the Blazers exercise their option on the fourth season. It's believed that the structure of the new contract calls for Odom to earn $25 million over the first three seasons, with Portland owing him a buyout of $2 million in the fourth year if they elect not to pick up their team option. Sources indicated that a sense of relief poured through GM Nate McMillan and coach Thierry Tirieux after word of the agreement spread, with Odom known to be giving serious consideration to leaving the Lakers, the team he helped last month to the 15th title in franchise history. Miami's Dwyane Wade had been publicly lobbying for Odom to come "back home" for weeks, also Pat Riley. Limited in what it could offer as a team well over the salary cap, Miami was nonetheless prepared to give him a five-year deal worth $34 million with an option to return to free agency after four seasons or a four-year deal with a provision to go back on the open market after three years to try to negotiate a richer deal.
Talks between the Lakers and Odom broke down in mid-July when Buss, after an agreement had been reached with Odom's camp on an annual salary of $9 million per season, rescinded the offer when he learned that Odom was also talking with the Heat, the Blazers and the Dallas Mavericks. The lack of state income tax in Florida, which helped narrow the gap between the Lakers' original offer and Miami's best offer, as well as the close relationship fostered between Odom and Wade during their one season together with the Heat in 2003-04, appeared to create a real threat of Miami stealing Odom away. Odom's signing was the most significant free-agent move left to play out this summer. He was a pivotal piece to the title-winning team which now features Artest, although he initially chafed at his move to the bench last fall, Odom ultimately flourished as a sixth man last season. With Odom gone, the other significant loss is swingman Trevor Ariza, who left to sign a contract with the Houston Rockets after the Lakers signed Artest. It remains to be seen whether Miami, meanwhile, will try to rebound from its Odom disappointment by ramping up efforts to trade for Utah Jazz power forward Carlos Boozer.
Odom, who was acquired by the Lakers on July 14, 2004 as part of a trade with the Miami Heat for Shaquille O’Neal, appeared in 78 regular season games with Los Angeles during the 2008-09 campaign, averaging 11.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.26 blocks in 29.7 minutes. In the 2008-09 postseason, Odom appeared in 23 games (5 starts), averaging 12.3 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.35 blocks in 32.0 minutes, while posting 14 double-figure scoring games and converting seven double-doubles. Odom, the fourth overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft, left the University of Rhode Island after a sophomore season in which he was named AP Honorable Mention All-America and Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. After tallying 30 points and 12 rebounds in his NBA debut, Odom went on to be selected to the 1999-2000 NBA All-Rookie First team. In 2005-06, Odom was the only player in the NBA to average better than 14 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists, and in ten NBA seasons, has career averages of 15.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 36.5 minutes in 665 games. In 10 NBA seasons, Odom has averaged 15.1 points and 8.8 rebounds. He made $14.1 million last season to complete the six-year, $63 million contract he received from Miami in the summer of 2003. In five seasons with the Lakers, Odom posted averages of 14.2 points, 9.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 36.6 minutes.

good god. odom's got the worst eating habits i've ever seen in a 'pro' athlete; anyone ever show him what a piece of fruit looks like?
anyway, hate odom and anything Lakers in general so i aint feelin' that trade; but i do like your team choice though. was contemplating beginning a new dynasty soon and they were one of the possibilities but you beat me to the punch - good luck! (though my money's on you pulling a Forrest Gump before ASWknd

If I were to re-do the Blazers offseason, I would have drafted Blair, then signed either Sessions or Ariza, but that's just me. Odom is a decent signing, but I presume you will be starting him at the three, which kind of sucks as he is more of a PF. Nice video though.

I like the team choice... but hate the Odom deal. Like the user above stated, Ariza would have been a great fit (high energy, fits in the 3 spot). It would be interesting to see your starting line up right now.

Hell, no. I hope this one lasts. You should just not recap every game of the league. Do it more with reports like Sit for example and like I did it in older dynasties and plan to do it this time. I really hope this one lasts. Good luck.

I like how you signed Lamar. I love this association already!

Ah, the draft is gone, I have Pendergraph and Cunningham. Ariza would have been a good fit but I would have left the Rockets in mediocrity, without T-Mac and Yao. Odom yeah, my plan is start him as 3, but then back Aldridge at PF when he goes to the bench and put Outlaw at the 3.Drausus wrote:I like the team choice... but hate the Odom deal. My lineup right now would be Blake, Roy, Odom, Aldridge, Oden; Outlaw, Bayless, Fernandez as role players, but my real plan is get a SG and move Roy to the point...hova- wrote:Hell, no. Nope, I won't play all 82. I'm now posting a list of simulated and played games. The played games will have the whole recap and boxscores and the simulated games, I will post short recaps about them in Thierry's blog. I will play the whole playoffs, that's for sure.Sit wrote:I like how you signed Lamar. I love this association already!

Last Season: 54-28; second place in Northwest Division
Key Players Added: Lamar Odom, Juwan Howard, Dante Cunningham, Jeff Pendergraph
Key Players Lost: Sergio Rodriguez, Channing Frye, Shavlik Randolph, Michael Ruffin, Raef LaFrentz- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Portland fans know that this team is expected to do big things. Sixty-win things. Championship things. This is a championship-caliber team, even though it couldn't get out of the first round last season. It's loaded, it has more talent than last season, and I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if the Blazers eventually racked up those 60 wins. Or more.
The West is stacked, again, and wins are going to be hard to come by. Do you really want to take some wins away from the Lakers or Spurs and hand them to the Trail Blazers ... just ‘cause? Nah. The team will be much better in 2009-10. The offseason included picking up a few rookies who won't play and adding Lamar Odom, and that's about it. Every other step up will come from internal development. For most teams, that's a bit of a bummer. When your team boasts Brandon Roy, possibly the league's most underappreciated superstar; LaMarcus Aldridge and Greg Oden, this is a great thing. To say nothing of Martell Webster, Travis Outlaw, Rudy Fernandez or Jerryd Bayless.
And every year, until they hit their prime, youngsters take their production up a step as compared with the season before. And the Trail Blazers? Every player on the Blazers, who was a Blazers last season, will be better than the year before. Every one. That's huge. I honestly think Portland is the clear No. 3 in the West. Better than Denver, better than anyone else. I don't have them winning as much as the Spurs in the regular season, for whatever reason, but I think they are the squad with the best chance at knocking off the Lakers. This team could go from the lottery to a championship in just two years.
Everyone's got to stay on point, though. Everyone has to be willing to walk the million-mile journey and stay focused, and I think Nate McMillan and I, are the sort of guys who can keep that focus for this (still, very) young team. I'm not worried about Portland taking a step back. Roy's too good, in all areas. With Oden in shape, he'll truly shape up the defense. The depth is there, the scoring is the best in the league per possession.
This is the year of the second big jump, Portland.
Expected Record: 57-25
Thierry Tirieux
Blazers head coach
P.S.: Expect more things from inside the locker room in my soon-to-open blog.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Word From People on the Street
• Sit, from Australia: “This team has an enviable collection of talent but also boasts one of the league's deepest rotations, something that serves to limit the ceiling of a number of players. Two who are above the fray: Roy and Aldridge. Roy is a superstar in every sense of the word: highly productive, consistent, reliable and efficient. Aldridge hasn't quite reached superstar status, but he's quite good and efficient in his own right. While the defensive stats may never fully come around, he does well enough on offense and overall to warrant serious consideration in the league. It's a shame that the Candy Man left L.A, but he will be an amazing fit with the Blazers. Good luck to him.”
• Lamrock, from Seattle: “Unless the team has the worst luck in the world, Portland's internal development, along with the addition of Odom, should be enough. And if Oden is able to play, say, 33 minutes a game and not sit out for more than a few games in 2009-10, the team's defense could jump up to the ranks of the above-average. Paired with what was statistically the best offense in the NBA last year, this could mean 60 or more wins.”
• hova-, from Germany: “I'm now following the Bobcats, but adding a player like Odom to the most efficient offense in the NBA should only increase Portland's effectiveness. I've seen coach Tirieux experiment with tempo and lineups in the preseason, leading to offensive inconsistency. It's tempting to say size, youth or depth is Portland's greatest strength, but it should be versatility. Matchups are key in the playoffs and by adding the Candy Man and getting a healthy Webster along with the natural progression of the younger players, the coach should have a specific lineup available for any situation.”
• Valor, from Hong Kong: “I'm rooting for the Bulls as always but I will give you my opinion on the Blazers. Anything short of a division title and the second round of the playoffs would be a disappointment. Management, coaches and players have all set the bar very high. Management feels they have assembled the right personnel, the coaches feel they've added experience and savvy to a talented group of youngsters, and the players feel like they have something to prove after getting booted out of the first round by a tougher, more determined Rockets team. Pretty simple, really.”
• Martti, from Estonia: “For a team that posted 54 wins last season, they have some pretty glaring weaknesses that teams could easily exploit. Let's not forget that the Blazers are below average in their transition defense and struggle with turnovers on a nightly basis. Plus, they can't seem to get anyone to turn on the burners and push the ball for any easy buckets of their own. I haven't looked at the numbers, but Portland has got to be one of the lowest teams in the NBA for fast-break points. GO HEAT!!!!1!!!!111! HELL YEAH!!!1!!111!!11!!!!¤"#%!”
• Clutch, from Houston: “If the Blazers want to win the championship, they should start by appointing Lamar at a nutricionist. More fruit, less candy. Go Rockets.”- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
