Will you stay in the mix or plumet to the bottom...

I think you will be fine, but not elite

LAKERS REPORT
Lakers GM Exploring Possibilities

EL SEGUNDO - In the wake of Kobe Bryant's injury diagnosis, Lakers GM Isaiah Cruz said he was expecting bigger performances from all the players who step out on the court.

"Obviously, the guys have to step up," he said. "With Kobe out, Pau (Gasol), Lamar (Odom), the rest of the guys have to take their game to a new level. The bench has been struggling a bit, with the exception of Andrew (Bynum), and it's time to see what they're made of."

Lakers coach Phil Jackson agreed.

"These guys can't be deferring to one playing anymore," he said during practice. "They have to start playing as a collective unit."

Cruz also said he was exploring possibilites on the contracts of Chris Mihm, Ira Newble, Coby Karl and DJ Mbenga.

"I love those guys obviously," Cruz said. "But this is a business, and this might not be the right fit for them. But who knows, an injury or two there, their name might be called up."

BREAKING NEWS: MONTA ELLIS COMES TO LA IN FIVE-PLAYER TRADE

Image Image Image Image Image

EL SEGUNDO - Lakers GM Isaiah Cruz said he wanted other players to step up in the light of Kobe Bryant's injury.

He also said he would explore other possibilities.

He decided to wait no longer and took the latter.

The Lakers and Warriors announced today that they have agreed to a deal which sends forwards Vladimir Radmanovic, guard Sasha Vujacic and center Chris Mihm to Oakland in exchange for guard Monta Ellis and Austin Croshere.

Vujacic was scheduled to be the starting shooting guard for the Lakers in their game against the Memphis Grizzlies. Looks like he won't get his chance.

Ellis, an explosive young guard, averages 13.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists, shooting 50.6% from the field while appearing in 7 of the 8 Warrior games, starting all 7. Croshere is averaging 3.3 points and 1.8 rebounds.

Radmanovic goes to Golden State after his two biggest games of the season. He scored 11 points in the win over Philadelphia and 14 against Miami. On the season he averages 7.5 points while shooting 57.9% from the field.

Vujacic is averaging 2.8 points per game and shoots 36.4% from downtown, adding another shooter to Golden State.

"We like Ellis' explosiveness on the court, and we feel he can make a big impact," Cruz said while introducing Ellis on Friday. "He gives us another quick body who can handle the ball and shoot."

Ellis is expected to start at shooting guard, filling in the hole left by Kobe Bryant's injury.

"It's sad to see Vlade go," Cruz continued. "He was a great guy, a great teammate. But this is a business and we have to move on."

Radmanovic said he has no hard feelings for the Lakers.

"It's all good," he said. "Obviously I loved it here in LA, but I have to move on. I'm looking forward to playing in Oakland."

Chris Mihm has yet to play.

Ellis will wear Bryant's old number 8.

once again the Warriors make another boneheaded decision lol

unlikely trade in RL but this is fantasy bball so - great trade; Monta will definitely produce in mamba's absence and it'll be interesting to see how/if they compliment each other once Kobe returns

Great trade! But not realistic really in real life. Anyway, goodluck on your next matches and I hope Ellis will be able to contribute in Kobe's absence. (Y)

PAU GASOL HITS GAME-WINNING SHOT IN ELLIS' DEBUT

LOS ANGELES - With Kobe Bryant gone for a while, it has been preached many times that people have to step up.

It seems improbable for the Lakers to stay afloat without their star.

But improbably might just be on their side.

The Lakers were trailing by four, 99-95, with 33.2 seconds left after Mike Conley scored on a slam dunk which looked to ice the game. However, Derek Fisher was fouled on a drive attempt on the next play. The first missed, but he drained the second. Memphis threw the ball away on the sideline on a careless pass and Gasol then kicked it out to a suddenly wide-open Fisher on the elbow who drained a three which tied the game and brought the STAPLES Center fans on their feet.

Hakeem Warrick then held the ball and backed Gasol down but missed a tough hook, and the ball went right into Fisher's hands. He sprinted down court and fed a trailing Gasol who dribbled baseline and shot a tough fadeaway as the buzzer sounded which went through for a runaway 101-99 thriller.

Gasol had 17 points and 10 rebounds, but battled foul trouble, which allowed Andrew Bynum to get more playing time. Overshadowed in Gasol and Fisher's heroics was Andrew Bynum's monster game of 24 points, 8 rebounds and 9 huge blocks - a near triple double.

LA also got a timely contribution from Luke Walton, who scored 14 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and 5 assists in an efficient all-around game.

Newcomer Monta Ellis, who was the big story entering the game, had 13 points, 4 assists and 2 steals.

This game was expected to be a blowout, but the Grizzlies made a game of it thanks to their incredibly hot shooting. Conley paced Memphis with 23 points on 10-of-16, former Laker Javaris Crittenton had 17 on 7-of-9, and Mike Miller had 16 on 6-of-9. As a team they shot 55.4% from the field.

But despite all this, they just couldn't come away with the 'W.'

LATE CHARGE CALL ON ODOM COSTS LAKERS

LOS ANGELES - Monta Ellis went down with 43.1 seconds left in the first quarter, Pau Gasol had a horrible game, and an offensive foul call on Lamar Odom with 58.1 seconds left proved costly as the Los Angeles Lakers dropped their first game of the season to the hot-shooting New York Knicks, 97-89.

What was a one-point defecit quickly turned into a ten-point one for LA, 84-74 after Jamal Crawford hit a three-pointer and Stephon Marbury scored on a layup with 5:31 to go. From there, the Lakers didn't poise any serious threat. A Derek Fisher three-pointer cut the lead down to 95-89 with 1:11 left, but a David Lee layup and Odom's offensive foul stopped sealed the win for the Knicks.

Ronny Turiaf top scored with 18 points for LA, Fisher had 13 and Andrew Bynum scored 10 off the bench. Gasol also had 10 and 11 boards but shot only 5-of-18 from the field, mostly on jump shots.

Odom, still slowed by injury, mustered only 9 points, but had 4 rebounds and 5 assists.

Crawford led New York with 23 points, and Eddy Curry had a monster game with 20 points and 13 boards, which included four putback dunks. He shot 10-of-12 from the field. Stephon Marbury scored 14 and Mardy Collins had 17 off the bench.

As a team the Knicks shot 49.4% from the field.

It looked to be another Laker victory after LA topped the first quarter, 24-16. However, in the second, New York would go on a run which would give them the lead until Jordan Farmar scored on a layup in the third to put the Lakers in front, 69-68. But from there the Knicks would take the lead for good.

Ellis left the game after banging into Curry for a layup near the end of the first. X-Rays after the game were negative, he is listed as day-to-day.
