I based the comparisions on the nbadraft.net, where Morrison was compared to Larry Bird, but I do have to agree with you that his more of a Redd than a Bird.

The rest of the lottery a.k.a Mock Draft Part II

In the second edition of Mock Draft, I'm gonna look through rest of the lottery picks, so it's preview of picks from 6 to 14. Most of them are centers, 4, then there are 2 shooting guards and 2 small forwards, which leaves 1 point guard left and none of power forwards are represented. 6 of these teams are from Western Conference and 3 of Eastern Conference teams are represented here. There are many equally talented players here, just like in Top 5, which made the predicting harder, but after all everything ended up into their right place. But this is just my state of opinion, which means the real Draft could turn out to be totally upside down compared to this one. There's still like 4 months until the draft, which would make a big difference, just looking at which team gets which pick.

Image
New Orleans Hornets, 6th pick: Randy Foye, Villanova

NBA Comparison: Chauncey Billups

Current Starting Point Guard: Earl Watson

New Orleans is looking to draft another guard next to the Baron Davis, because Earl Watson isn't really a starter material. They could turn into picking Rudy Gay, who would play shooting guard then for the Hornets, or they could choose Villanova's product Randy Foye. I'll go with the lateral part; they've already got plenty of size on the wing, with 6-11 Charlie Villanueva, plus Randy can play both guard positions. Although thing is, that's the problem with Foye, his neither pure shooting guard nor point guard. Randy is a very tough player, he can finish very well around the basket, because of his great body control. He has many weapons on the offense, he's a great one on one player, also has excellent range. Also he's a great defender, hustles a lot for steals, although he can get to foul trouble often.

Image
Philadelphia 76ers, 7th pick: Rudy Gay, UConn

NBA Comparison: Vince Carter

Current Starting Small Forward: Glenn Robinson

Rudy is extremely atlethic, who can easily finish around the rim. It would be a blast to see him play together with another highflyer, Andre Iguodala and one the best scorers in the league, Allen Iverson. Philadelphia is really missing inside presence, although last years pick Tiago Splitter is showing some talent, but he isn't clearly enough; sadly this year there aren't many options on good big men, so they'll take the best player available, which is in this situation Rudy Gay. It would be very interesting how would this pan out, fortunately he is very unselfish player, so he could live with not taking many shots, since AI-s combine together a big number of shot attempts.

Image
Portland Trail Blazers (from Golden State via Seattle), 8th pick: Shelden Williams, Duke

NBA Comparison: Emeka Okafor

Current Starting Center: Reggie Evans

Portland is trying to overcome of the Jail Blazers status and become a playoff team again. They managed to succeed on last years draft, where they drafted Felton (12th pick) and Kelenna Azubuike (42nd pick). They're hoping to get lucky this year again, getting a steal out of the draft. Portland's problem is like many other team's, down low. They only got 3 players, who could play center/power forward; Zach Randolph, Reggie Evans and Theo Ratliff. Only Zach Randolph could be named as better than average, Theo and Reggie are at best role players. Unfortunately there aren't many selections, they could go with Saer "the next Mutombo" Sene, Patrick O'Bryant, Shelden Williams or could make a risk taking Josh Boone this early. Shelden Williams could be the safest pick here, he's a very hard-working guy, who does the "dirty" job that needs to be done (blocks, rebounds). After 4 years at Duke's, he has built a strong foundation with solid fundamentals. There are few cons though still, he's too stiff, he misses the ability to improvise, everything he does is "mechanical", lacks court vision, but I still think he could be a solid double-double guy in the league, but will see if he gets out of his "frames".

Image
Utah Jazz, 9th pick: J.J. Redick, Duke

NBA Comparison: Drazen Petrovic/Jason Kapono

Current Starting Shooting Guard: Gordan Giricek

After being the worst team in the league and getting No. 1 pick in Andrew Bogut last year, they've already improved, with about 30 games still left, they're already 1 win short from last season's record. They've got a great front court in Bogut - Boozer - Kirilenko plus Okur coming off the bench, but the backcourt isn't that great. Their last years second round pick, Francisco Garcia, has turned out to be a steal in the draft, he has been quite good for them as a 6th man. Apart from Garcia, Okur and Giricek, they miss outside shooting, even here, Okur is a center not a guard, so they only got 2 guards, who can somewhat shoot. There are quite a few options in the draft, if you're looking for a player, who can play a guard. But looking for a guard, who can shoot well, there aren't many options left. Without doubt the best shooter is JJ Redick out of Duke University. He's got an amazing shooting touch and he can shoot from everywhere, even at 27 feet away from the basket.

Image
Milwaukee Bucks, 10th pick: Patrick O'Bryant, Bradley

NBA Comparison: Brad Daugherty

Current Starting Center: Joe Smith

Milwaukee got an extremely deep team, apart from Michael Redd, the franchise player of the team, you can say they've got 14 other equal player, who could play big role for the team. But they've had trouble finding the most effective players out of this list and that's why they have been struggling lately. Although Joe Smith has been quite decent this year, he hasn't got much left in the tank. Apart from Joe, they have only 3 big men left, so they must find a replacement to him. If they won't trade for somebody nor sign somebody in FA (which is very unlikely, since most of the money they have left will be spent on Michael Redd), only option left is to draft a big guy. Just like before said, this draft lacks of big men, so there aren't many options. Very interesting prospect is Bradley's product Patrick O'Bryant. The 7 footer has great potential to live up with, but he won't make an impact to the team for couple of years, it might happen just when Joe is looking to hang up his sneakers. Patrick has got some solid post up moves and isn't too shabby on defense either; he is great rebounder and shot blocker as well.

Image
Los Angeles Clippers, 11th pick: Thabo Sefolosha, Switzerland

NBA Comparison: Reece Gaines

Current Starting Shooting Guard: Kerry Kittles

After last years disappointment as being the 2nd worse team in the NBA, you can see the improvement of the Clippers. It has a lot to do with Brand and Maggete both having MVP-a-like seasons. The addition of Deron Williams at point guard has helped a lot as well. By far the worst position is for them shooting guard, only aging Kerry Kittles is left. Fortunately there are many good shooting guard prospects in this draft and many of them are reasonable to select at this point of the draft. We've got amazingly athletic small forward/shooting guard Carney, very versatile Brewer and great ball handler Sefolosha. All of them aren't great shooters, the Clippers doesn't need shooting anyway that much. They don't need another All-Star, they could just use a great roleplayer and all of them could be that guy. I guess they're looking for a guy, who can do it all, but don't need much to do it. This is a very hard decision, but I'm gonna go with international prospct, Thabo, who can even play small forward AND point guard if needed. But that's not why i chose him, I'm really waiting to see how will he adjust his playing style to NBA basketball and his last years improvement has shown that there is a lot to wait from this guy.

Image
Orlando Magic, 12th pick: Ronnie Brewer, Arkansas

NBA Comparison: Marquis Daniels

Current Backup Small Forward: Andre Emmet

Orlando got a bunch of scorers in their team, both inside and outside. The main inside scorer is of course Dwight Howard, Sean May could sometime soon pair up with him down low, while there are more than two options outside, their guard - small forward positions are filled with shooters, just look at their starters in Hedo Turkoglu, Cuttino Mobley and Steve "Franchise" Francis, you may think that's enough, but it isn't, Nate Robinson, Keith Bogans and Willie Green are all great shooters off the bench (you could also add Pat Garrity, who is currently on the IR list). What they do are, is missing a player, who could be the "distributer", since their starting point guard, Francis is more of a scoring guard than passer. But I think they'll continue with Francis at point guard and Mobley at shooting guard, so they could use a guy who could be a "point" forward, Hedo has shown some abilities to become that guy, but they could use another one. Another thing they could want is perimeter defense. Ronnie Brewer fills the both needs for the Magic and I think he could be a lock for them.

Image
Phoenix Suns, 13th pick: Saer Sene, Senegal

NBA Comparison: Dikembe Mutombo

Current Starting Center: Akim Ben Harper

Phoenix's frontcourt, excluding Amaré Stoudemire, is as thin as Adam Morrison's moustache, their starting center was Jake Voskuhl (!) last year, and this year it isn't much better, it's undrafted rookie Akim Ben Harper, who even could make Robert Swift look good on offense. So they desperately need another big men (even Marc Jackson would be an upgrade). Now they're trying to draft a solid center. He don't have to be an All-star, he could be just a 8 point, 8 rebound, 2 block guy. Since Shelden Williams and Patrick O'Bryant are already taken, it's left to Saer Sene and Hilton Armstrong. They are quite similar players, they're both 7 footers, who are good on defense, but their offense needs to work on. Sene is more of a unknown potential, he could turn out to be the next Dikembe, but he could also fail big time and even get no playing time whatsoever. Hilton on the other hand is a much safer pick, since he has played college in US and it's much easier to understand, what kind of player he will turn out. But if you will look Phoenix's previous drafts, you'll see they've taken somewhat risks, which has turned out to be steals in the draft, just look Amare, Joe, Shawn and Steve, all of them were picked in mid-first round. So taking account that, I think they'll go with Sene and turn him into solid player.

Image
Los Angeles Lakers, 14th pick: Hilton Armstrong, UConn

NBA Comparison: Ervin Johnson

Current Starting Center: Chris Mihm

The Lakers is almost as thin as Phoenix down low. Although they've got a bunch of power forwards, only players, who can play at center are Brian Grant and Chris Mihm, both of them aren't starter material (anymore fo Grant). It will be an easy pick to predict (if the players above are drafted before Lakers turn). After Phoenix picking Saer Sene, it only leaves them Hilton Armstrong, who isn't very polished on offense, but compensates it on defense. I don't know if there's much more to say about this, only thing that comes up in my mind, if they would release Odom, George, Butler and Jumaine Jones, they could draft the best talent left in Rodney Carney, but in this situation he could end up being stuck behind 4 (maybe 3) players in small forward position.

The rest of the First Round a.k.a. Mock Draft Part III

In the third edition of Mock Draft, I'm going to look through the rest of the 1st round pick, so it will be picks from 15 to 30, all of these picks belong to playoff teams. Again there were a lot of equally talented players, but still some of them remain to the table. Most of these picks are based on what teams need, but that shouldn't be the case always, just look Sam Bowie-MJ scenario. I'll going to begin with it then.

Image
Toronto Raptors, 15th pick: Marcus Williams, Connecticut

Toronto's worst position is by far point guard. They have 29 year old Rafer Alston playing starting point guard and expiring contract of Alvin Williams playing backup. They're hoping to strengthen it by drafting Marcus Williams, who could become the purest and best point guard from this draft and he would straight have impact on the Raptors.

Image
Washington, 16th pick: Rodney Carney, Memphis

Washington's last years 2nd rounder, Ryan Gomes has proven he could be a great role player for the team and is currently starting for them at small forward. They're current backup Jared Jeffries, according to numerous reports, isn't looking to re-sign with the team and is going to try out the FA market. That leaves only Gomes and barely an injury reserve player, Nemanja Aleksandrov at the small forward position. Luckily there are a lot of swingmen in this years draft and Rodney Carney could be still available at this part of the draft (but definately not a lock) and the Wizards should be happy with this pick.

Image
New Jersey, 17th pick: Cedric Simmons, North Carolina State

New Jersey got lucky last year and managed to pick Marvin Williams with 3rd pick (they had 11th worse record in the league). This year they're hoping to get into the PO, they're currently ranked 6th in the weak East, but even if they can make it, there's very little chance that they're going to succeed. Mainly because of their frontcourt, believe it or not, they're starting power forward/center are Erik Lorbek and DeSagana Diop, while Marvin Williams is sitting on the bench. Like said before there aren't many good power forwards/centers this year, but North Carolina's Cedric Simmons could do good for them.

Image
Houston Rockets, 18th pick: Rajon Rondo, Kentucky

While the current starting of the Rockets Charlie Ward is soon looking to get away from the league, their point guard position isn't looking very deep. Of course they have Bob Sura, Luther Head and Anthony Johnson all could play point guard, but is that going to be enough? Rajon Rondo out of Kentucky looks like a safe bet and be a solid role player in the NBA, who the Rockets could try and give it a go on him by drafting him.

Image
New York Knicks, 19th pick: Josh Boone, Connecticut

Josh Boone has been very interested playing for both teams of the New York area, the Nets and the Knickerbockers. But since New Jersey has passed on them, New York Knicks seems like a good destination for him. Especially because the current big men for the Knicks are not looking very good, they may have many players down low, but none of them don't look to have a great future ahead for them (well maybe Sweetney, but that is big maybe).

Image
Miami Heat, 20th pick: Oleksiy Pecherov, Ukraine

After departure of Christian Laettner, they're left with Udonis Haslem and Zaza Pachulia at the power forward position. They really could use another one. So, I think they will lean on another international prospect, Oleksiy Pecherov, who could play both reserve big men position for the Heat.

Image
Detroit Pistons, 21st pick: Shawne Williams, Memphis

After losing to Boston in ECF last year, they haven't recovered very well from it, they are only 28-22. And even worse, they could lose 2 main guys in the summer, Big Ben and Tayshaun Prince. So they could use another guy, who could score some point and grab some boards off the bench immediately, next to Antonio McDyess. Shawne Williams is a great guy and would improve Pistons bench and maybe to get another chance at the title before the team's expiry date is over.

Image
Denver Nuggets, 22nd pick: Quincy Douby, Rutgers

After disastrous 2002-03 season, the Nuggets are looking to get into playoff for the third season in a row, so far they are 7th in the playoff race, 4 and a half game above current 9th place Lakers. Compared to last season their most likely going to end up with little worse record. Although compared to last season, the bench is better, it's quite a mess. It's hard to find place for everybody. So, I think it could be very likely that they could trade their pick away with somebody, but it's possible that they'll keep their pick. They could use another 3 point threat, their current best 3 point shooter, Roger Mason, is unsure if he'll re-sign with the Nuggets. Thus Quincy Douby seems like a logical pick for the.

Image
Seattle Supersonics, 23rd pick: Solomon Jones, South Florida

Seattle has been hoping to draft Josh Boone, even considering his NY desire. But as you can see, he's not available at this point. So it's going to be interesting to see, who would they pick if Boone is off the table. It wouldn't hurt them to get another big man. It's going to be very mysterious, who will they choose, but I'm going to use randomness and pick Solomon Jones, it's just too hard to predict.

Image
Boston Celtics, 24th pick: Paul Davis, Michigan State

Boston like any other NBA team needs a center and/or power forward, Raef LaFrentz has passed his prime and Al Jefferson hasn't been happy in Beantown, Paul Davis is a great rebounder and a solid scorer, who just could fill in the gap. The other option is another Paul and another great rebounder, Paul Millsap, but it might be just a little stretch.

Image
Indiana Pacers, 25th pick: Kyle Lowry, Villanova

Indiana has only missed only one playoff since 89-90 season and their looking to continue it this year, maybe even take the Championship home for the first time in the Pacers history (not counting ABA). They don't need another star player (well not that desperately), but could use better backup point guard, maybe even somebody who could take over Jamaal Tinsley's starting job somewhere in the future. Kyle Lowry looks to be a solid late first rounder, who has the chance to be somebody, only problem could be his injury history, which hopefully end in the NBA.

Image
Memphis Grizzlies, 26th pick: Jordan Farmar, UCLA

Memphis looks to have a bright future, Pau Gasol is leading them to another playoff run, 3rd year in a row now and if they'll keep their core together, they will be perennial PO team. Next to Pau, there are a lot of great guys, including fabulous passer Jason "White Chocolate" Williams, ultimate scorer Mike Miller and one of the best defender Shane Battier. They will be looking to add a little depth by draft, but no dramatic changes, reserve point guard will do. Jordan Farmar would be definately upgrade over current Troy Bell and fits into the Grizzlies organisation very well.

Image
San Antonio Spurs, 27th pick: Renaldo Balkman, South Carolina

San Antonio is looking to continue to draft well, last year's 59th pick!, Jason Maxiell has turned out to be huge steal, not even mentioning their first rounder, Joey Graham, who has replaced Bruce Bowen in the starting lineup. Or you could look few years past, when they picked up to All-Star caliber players in the 2nd round, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. Renaldo Balkman is a great defensive energy player and if needed, could become another "dirty" player for the Spurs (that doesn't certainly mean bad).

Image
Minnesota Timberwolves, 28th pick: Kosta Perovic, Serbia

Minnesota has almost zero bench, but their still 3rd in the hard West, only 2 games behind league leader Sacramento. There's not even question why, Kevin Garnett of course. But one man isn't enough, of course if you're not Michael Jordan or Wilt Chamberlein, who KG with all the respect is not, he needs sidekicks. Luckily their GM, Kevin McHale has gotten two, Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell. Their not exactly in their first youth, but are solid enough for couple more years to go. And of course not to forget Wally Szczerbiak. But their current starting center is far from solid, one of the biggest busts in the draft history, Michael Olowokandi. And they have no other centers in their team, if you don't count rookie Andray Blatche. Kevin McHale could make another risky pick, just like he did with drafting KG, which could turn into something good. Even if the risk doesn't work out, it wouldn't hurt them by much. But who is this "risk" I'm talking about? It's another Euro big man, 7 foot 2 Kosta Perovic from Serbia.

Image
Dallas Mavericks, 29th pick: Ryan Hollins, UCLA

Dallas already has 5 centers, but you could only call 1 somewhat solid, Erick Dampier, even here it's a stretch. So they'll give it another try drafting a center, but who? There isn't much left. After last month's solid performance for the UCLA I have been sold on Ryan Hollins. Of course he won't be anywhere near a star in NBA, but could become good backup center. That's what Dallas is looking for and I'm quite sure that he'll fit into Dallas system.

Image
Sacramento Kings, 30th pick: Craig Smith, Boston College

Craig Smith is a great example that you don't need to be extremely talented to make it to the NBA. He's a hard working guy and if he wants to (I'm sure he will), he will make the transition to the NBA. The last first round pick is left to Sacramento Kings. Although they're leading the league, they don't have backup small forward, plus their reserve center and power forward are both far from good, Greg Ostertag and Darius Songaila respectively. In my opinion Smith is going to top both of them and be the guy, who Gerald Wallace used to be few years ago (well Craig can play center as well if needed, although he is bit too short).

Next Up: Mock Draft Part IV, in the last edition the 2nd rounders are going to be look through.
