2008 Offseason
The Lottery produced a few surprises as Portland jumped up from number 8 to number 3 and Orlando jumped from number 4 to number 1. Toronto slipped to number 2.
The First order of business was making sure to reward the players for their efforts in the playoffs. GM Chris Mullin and Nelson resigned Barnes to a 2 year contract for the mid-level exception and gave Monta Ellis what he wanted, a 1 year minimum deal.

The Warriors coming off their championship season focused on their weaknesses: frontcourt depth. During the postseason, Nelson was forced to play Matt Barnes, a true 3, at power foward. The worst scenario was during one game where Bargnani and Harrington both fouled out and Barnes had to play center, and rookie Gonzalo Munez had to play power forward. With that lineup, the Warriors were essentially playing 3 small forwards at once with 2 guards.
As a result with the 26th and 56th picks the Warriors selected power forward Gerrard Rice (61 overall) and Center Marco Fox (56 overall). The Warriors did not put succient effort into the draft and as result were stuck with 2 fairly poor players. Both picks recieved "F" grades from ESPN insider.
Notable Free Agency News
- Josh Smith signs with Pacers
- J.R. Smith signs with Bobcats
- Dirk Nowitzki, Luol Deng, and Emeka Okafor all eventually did resign with their respective teams, but on the last day of free agency which shows they originally asked for too much money.
The Bay Area was dissapointed by the draft, especially after acquring 2 strong rookies last year. Buzz of possible trades were the talk of the town.
On 8/25/08 (3 days after my b-day haha fun fact) the Warriors announced a deal:
Newly resigned Monta Ellis, disgruntled guard Andre Owens, and 2nd round draft Pick Marco Fox were packaged together and traded to Rival Nuggets for Danny Granger.
Then on 9/2/08 another big deal was made:
Jackson was the primary cause for the Warrior's mediocre chemistry and was one of the few truly unhappy Warriors (in real life he loves the YAY AREA...). Not too many teams wanted him, but the Warriors were able to grant his trade request by packing him with the 20th pick in last years draft Gonzalo Munez, who the Wizards badly wanted.
Pictures of New Warriors:

The Italian Warriors (Romeo Esposito and Andrea Bargnani) worked out together all summer with Tim Grover, MJ's trainer.
Bargnani: Yea I worked with Tim again this summer and I referred Romeo to it too. This year I focused on improving my all-around game rather than my body, because I felt that I was at the perfect weight last season.
Esposito: I worked on slimming down becuase I felt my weight was slowing me down. Tim put me on an all new diet and now I feel much leaner. Although I only lost 3 pounds, this is because I lifted weights everyday too, so I gained a lot of muscle. I am much healthier and even a little faster
