Despite Miraculous Comeback, Celtics Fall In Over Time

Image 115
Image 121

Celtics Boxscore | Kings Boxscore

Monday 15th November Sacramento, CA. The Celtics looked slow right from the start of the game. Throughout the first half, no Celtic looked like he was ready and/or able to lead this team to a win. Telfair was making a nice contribution with his assists, but he couldn't score. Tony Allen played great defense but he could not score either, Leon Powe was scoring yet he was not rebounding as expected.

By the end of the first quarter, Boston was up eight, but was shooting the ball very poorly - especially from three, which was the main reason they one in their opener 2 weeks ago. Kings guards Quincey Douby and Kevin Martin were playing great, scoring at will and knocking down tough jumpers. Meanwhile, their frontline played solid defence and stop any chances of the Celtics scoring in the paint.

That pattern continued through the second quarter, with the only player able to knock down shots and play good solid defense at the other end being Al Jefferson. Kenny Thomas scorched the Celtics for 14 points and 6 rebounds in the second quarter, most of the damage done against Boston big man Brian Scalabrine. At the end of the half, the Celtics were up by 9, yet the score didnt tell the full story. Most of the half they were scoring there points in bunches then going cold for shots and shots on end, leaving the Kings still right in it.

By the fourth quarter, the were down two. Sebastian Telfair and Rajon Rondo began to heat up, playing great defence and knocking down tough shots. However, Kings rookie Quincy Douby and defensive minded small forward Fransisco Garcia teamed up to score a total of 18 of the Kings 22 points in the fourth, leaving Boston down by 11 with 1:57 to go. Celtics called a timeout and talked over what they wanted to take from this game, then took out some key players.

With 1:02 to go Sebastian Telfair stole an inbounds pass and layed it up and in. Next possesion Telfair pressures Douby and grabs the steal, hooking up Rajon Rondo for his only 3 ball of the night. Down by 6 with just 32 seconds left in the game, Leon Powe intentionally fouls Kenny Thomas. Thomas misses both. Celtics call time out. The Celtics thought they were out of the game with cold shooting and a seemingly insurmountable lead with less than 2 minutes remaining, they were wrong.

Upon inbounding the ball, Tony Allen finds the courage to fire up a 3 with just 28 ticks remaining, and he knocks it down. The Kings insert Douby into the game because of his great free throw shooting ability in such a pressure situation. Down by 3, Telfair steals another inbounds pass but has the following layup blocked by Kenny Thomas. However, the ball ends up in the hands of Gerald Green along the baseline and he soars in for the the up and under dunk over Thomas and Potapenko. With just 3 seconds to go in the game, the kings inbound to Douby and he is immediately fouled. He misses the first free throw, but sinks the second.

The Celtics call for timeout and talk over the final shot. Gerald Green inbounds to Telfair who raises up and drains a 19 footer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Going into overtime, the Celtics go on a quick 6-0 run sparked by the defensive play of Tony Allen. The Kings answer back with a huge 10-0 run of their own. Both teams trade baskets over the next two minutes until the Kings gain the lead once again, led by Quincy Douby. The Celtics, down by 2 with 40 seconds remaining, have a huge defensive lapse for two possesions that allow the Kings to take a 6 point lead with 2.1 remaining. Game Over.

Player Of The Game: Kenny Thomas - 27 points 11 rebounds 1 assist 1 steal

Boston Beat Star Studded Bulls

Celtics Boxscore | Bulls Boxscore

Tuesday 16th November Chicago, IL. The Celtics today came away with an impressive win over the Chicago Bulls. The game started out slow for the Celtics who were coming off a loss a day earlier in Sacramento, and they were only able to put up 17 points in the first - 8 of those points scored in the final 1:35. Sebastian Telfair had a tough first first quarter, only scoring 2 points and nabbing 1 rebound. Leon Powe led the Celtics in scoring going into the second with 6 points, followed by rookie Rajon Rondo with 5.

In the second quarter it was all Celtics. Al Jefferson started to heat up, scoring 6 straight points on inexperienced rookie Tyrus Thomas. Sebastion Telfair grabed 2 boards and scored 5 points, and fellow guard Tony Allen scored 6 of his 12 points in the second - two of those buckets off of Allan Ray alley oops. Bulls rookie Thabo Sefolosha was impressive, scoring 6 points and grabbing 4 rebounds before going to the bench with a little over 4 minutes remaining.

At the half the Celtics led by 3, though not for long. Thabo Sefolosha returned and hit back-to-back 3 balls from either end of the baseline, and rookie Tyrus Thomas recorded 3 blocks to go along with his 4 rebounds and 6 points in the third. Boston fought back, as Gerald Green jammed down a 360 after the steal and dish from Telfair. Green scored 12 points in the quarter, including 7 in the last two minutes. Kendrick Perkins came back on the floor and teamed with Leon Powe as they disrupted shots and grabbed plenty of boards to keep the lead at 3 points going into the fourth and final quarter.

The fourth quarter started off with a block on one end, and a powerfull windmill jam at the other for the Bulls, both courtesy of Tyrus Thomas. Allan Ray played great defense in the final quarter, nabbing all 3 of his steals against rookie Thabo Sefolosha - as Sefolosha went 0-6 from 3 in the fourth. Gerald Green came back into the game with 6 minutes to go, and pulled down 4 straight rebounds, one off them a powerfull putback off of a Allan Ray miss. Nearing the end of the game, the Celtics led by 4 points, until back-to-back 15 footers from Chris Duhon tied it up with 1:20 to go. Next Celtics possesion, Gerald Green went baseline for an amazing 360 dunk over Mike Sweetney and gave the Celtics the lead back at 81-79, Green then stole the ball and put down a gliding jam, on which he was fouled, and hit the extra free throw with 49 seconds remaining. With 22 seconds to go, Chris Duhon pulled up for a three which narrowly escaped the extended arm of Leon Powe, rattled out of the rim but was tipped back by Tyrus Thomas. The score was 84-81, Celtics leading, when Sebastian Telfair was intentionaly fouled to stop the clock. Telfair hit both of the free throws, giving the Celtics an 86-81 lead and the W.

Rajon Rondo Stars In Celtics Win Over Charlotte

Celtics Boxscore | Bobcats Boxscore

Saturday 20th November Boston, MA. The Celtics today beat Adam Morrison and the Charlotte Bobcats 107-89, behind a great outing in just 18 minutes of playing time from rookie guard Rajon Rondo. Rondo scored 12 of Boston's 30 points in the 2nd quarter, 6 points of that coming of deep threes over Adam Morrison and Raymond Felton. Other notable performances were that of Bostons Al Jefferson, Gerald Green and Sebastian Telfair, and Charlotte's Adam Morrison and Sean May.

In the first quarter, both teams looked to be struggling hitting the jump shot, especially from beyond the arc. Charlotte shot just 1-6 from downtown in the first, and Boston shot just 2-8 until the final two minutes when Sebastian Telfair knocked down back-to-back threes to give the Celtics a 5 point lead at the interval.

Beginning the second, Al Jefferson recorded 4 of his game high 8 blocks in a span of 3 minutes. 2 of those blocks came on dunk attempts from Primoz Brezec and Sean May. Boston second year swingman Gerald Green got up high with a reverse pump slam of the feed from Telfair, who finished with 9 assists. Gerald Green struck back with a steal in the waning moments of the half, finishing at the other end with a 360 from behind the dotted line that is bound for numerous SportsCenter appearances. At the half, Boston led 57-32 - with 16 of those points and 2 assists from Rajon Rondo.

Going into the third quarter, Adam Morrison began to heat up, scoring inside and out demolishing the Celtics frontline. Morrison scored 10 of his 16 points in the 3rd quarter, after scoring just 2 in the entire first half. Tony Allen answered back, scoring 7 points in a span of under two minutes, including a fadeaway three over Bobcats forward Sean May to go along with his 4 steals and 5 assists. The Bobcats, however, were too strong for the C's in the third, outscoring them 36-20.

Entering the final period, the Celtics led 77-68. Behind Sebastian Telfair and Al Jefferson, mainly on the defensive end, the Celtics were able to hold on to the lead and take out the win at home, 107-89.

Player of the Game: Rajon Rondo 21 points 1 rebound 3 assists 3 steals

Celtics Comeback To Beat Raptors

Image 102
Image 97

Celtics Boxscore | Raptors Boxscore

Monday 29th November Toronto. The Celtics were pumped up for their last game of the summer league against two Euroleague stars - Anthony Parker and Andrea Bargnani, and the rest of the Raptors. Allan Ray, the Celtics undrafted 3 point specialist was looking to redeem himself in what little way he could after connecting on less than 20% of his attempts from long range.

The Raptors had a good start, taking a 12 point lead into the 2nd quarter, behind 13 points from Anthony Parker. In the second quarter, the Celtics had seem to figure out Parkers game, and hold him to just 3 points on 1-4 shooting. The Celtics attempted to take the lead in a high powered offensive attack lead by PG Sebastian Telfair and SF Allan Ray, who went 4-7 from the 3 point arc.

In the 3rd, Boston carried their momentum as rookie PG Rajon Rondo stepped up on numerous occasions when the shot clock was winding down, and Kendrick Perkins suprised the Raptors by grabbing 7 rebounds in the quarter. Andrea Bargnani began to heat up towards the end of the 3rd, scoring 6 of the last 8 Toronto points.

In the 4th and final quarter, the Raptors began to run away with the game, at one point leading by 16 points, but it was not to be. Rajon Rondo recorded 5 steals in the final period and the Celtics cut the lead to 2 with just 54 seconds remaining. Following a Sebastian Telfair inbound steal - leading to an Allan Ray layup, the Celtics played more great defence as Kendrick Perkins blocked a shot attempt from Bargnani, and ran it back down court for the huge dunk. The Raptors failed to score on their last possesion, and with the shot clock about to expire with 2 seconds on the game clock, Allan Ray knocked down his fourth and final three to put salt on the wounds. The Celtics finished the summer league with a record of 4-3, lead by newcomer Sebastian Telfair.
