Good job to Rookie I. Snow. Nice numbers.
But holy look at those numbers by A.Mbembe.
Sick number for a rookie.
He'll be something in the future.

Yeah I totally lost my flow without KG in the game. It was harsh. My defense was nonexistant. Yeah, I'm quite pleased with Snow, he should be good. He went from 69-72 rating this year. I agree, Mbembe looks like a BEAST.

Off-season Coverage
(this post will be edited with updates)

Portland has won the draft lottery, and will have the #1 pick. Seattle gets the 21st pick.

Seattle has a HUGE amount of cap space, with seven, yes SEVEN contracts possibly coming off the books, including waived center Danny Fortson.

Dahntay Jones resigned... 1 year deal.
Image

-All of the big names I had hoped to get a chance at have resigned with their original teams. Lebron, Paul Pierce, Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter.... we'll just have to see what happens.

BORIS DIAW SIGNS WITH SEATTLE
It's a 4 year deal.
Image

Other free agent signings:
Image

In addition to the huge signing of Boris Diaw, the Sonics signed some roleplayers.

Bob Sura (69 overall) signed a 1 year deal, and is a very solid backup PG.

Julian Fujita (56 overall, rated 93 on blocking) was an undrafted rookie, but the Sonics see great potential in him. 1 year deal.

Cyrus Pierce (61 overall, 82 FG, 93 3pt ratings) might just be the best undrafted rookie this year. He is an incredible shooter.

In the draft, the Sonics drafted Jonah Mitchell (64 overall), a 6'9" PF who will probably see some time at center.

Overall, not as "blockbuster" of an offseason as we were planning for, but we filled the gaps with some quality players.

Sonics lose at home in season opener

The visiting Golden State Warriors have one of the most explosive backcourts in the league with Baron Davis and Jason Richardson. The Sonics were expecting to counter with their amazing frontcourt of Kevin Garnett and Boris Diaw. Garnett showed up, but Diaw left his game at home- he only scored seven points and was simply horrendous.

The first half was even, with the Warriors up by only 1 at the break. A 10-0 run early in the third quarter sealed the victory for Golden State.

Kevin Garnett led all scorers with 30, Dahntay Jones was the only other Sonic in double digits (he scored 16). Jason Richardson scored 28 for the Warriors.

Seattle Bounces Back, defeats Nuggets

It was a hard-fought game- but the Sonics squeaked out a victory against the Nuggets in Denver. The first half was an even match, with both teams trading buckets, hardly any defense to be seen. The largest lead of the game for either team came in the form of a buzzer-beating mid-court 3 pointer by Seattle's rookie center ( ) Fujita that gave the Sonics a 6 point advantage. Seattle's rookie guard Cyrus Pierce had a huge game, scoring 16 off the bench. Rumor has it he may be inserted into the starting lineup.

Shit ...
That Cyrus Pierce looks like a sick player.
Seems like everyone loves Diaw ay ?
Nice pickup.
Rather see you start KG at his primary position or his second to create mismatches.

Good win there, be a bit dissapointing to start the year 0-2, IMO start Diaw at C and have KG at PF or SF

Sonics lose game, lose Garnett

Seattle fans wept early in the second quarter of the team's visiting effort in Los Angeles against the Clippers. Not because their team was losing, but becuase Kevin Garnett went down, and went down hard.

Garnett got tangled up with Vladamir Radmanovic pretty badly and they both came down at an odd angle; Garnett's leg was twisted, and it appears his ankle may be broken- or worse. At the very least, he was out of this game. At the worst... well, let's just say we might not be seeing Kevin on the court anytime soon, sadly.

Back to the game- it was very close, as all the Seattle contests have been so far this season. The lead flopped back and forth early, both teams making and trading runs. Boris Diaw scored 16 of his 22 game points in the third quarter, rookie Cyrus Pierce got the start at shooting guard and had his second straight double digit outing with 20 points. Isidore Snow, the second year player who made the All-Rookie first team last year, just can't find his rythm this year and looks to be declining fast. He's a strong candidate to be moved (along with Bob Sura) for a more veteran presence on this young team.

The game came to be tied with just under a minute left in the 4th quarter, Cyrus Pierce put Seattle up by 3 with a HUGE 3 pointer, but Shaun Livingston made a clutch layup and got the foul off of rookie Jonah Mitchell, for a 3 point play. Score tied. Seattle failed to convert at the other end, and had no choice but to foul Livingston. He made both his free throws, and again- the Sonics just couldn't convert.

Clippers win by 2, Seattle falls to 1-2.

Seattle wins at home, makes a trade

Boris Diaw had an absolutely huge game (36 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 blocks) and lifted the Sonics to victory over Chris Bosh and the Toronto Raptors at home in Seattle. Cyrus Pierce scored 14 points, but on horrible 5-18 shooting.

Toronto played a great team game, but just couldn't hold onto their small lead and fell to the Sonics, 94-92. Seattle improves to 2-2 on the season.

Newly signed free agent Ansu Sesay, brought in to help fill in for the injured Kevin Garnett, began his second tour of duty with the Sonics tonight; he scored 8 points and nabbed 6 rebounds.

Cyrus Pierce dunks it:

The Sonics have entered into a complicated trade agreement that will get them rookie Small Forward Karl Cherry from the Charlotte Bobcats in exchange for A. Macijauskas whom they aquired from the New Orleans Hornets for Bob Sura.

The move was made to free up a bit of cap room to sign free agent guard Chucky Atkins to a 1-year deal.

Coach Bob Hill remarks on the new player arrivals:

"We're very excited that we've signed Chucky (Atkins)- he should provide a bit more of a veteran presence, which we're sorely in need of. We welcome Ansu Sesay back with open arms- he did great tonight against Toronto, and I'm sure he'll be seeing some big minutes."

When asked about Kevin Garnett's injury status, Hill declined to comment.

Sonics get revenge on Rockets

The Houston Rockets knocked Seattle out of the second round of the playoffs last year in a 2-game sweep. But they got their revenge tonight, beating the Rockets by 2, still without Kevin Garnett.

Coach Bob Hill:

"The only thing I'm really worrying about right now... is that it seems every game we're within two points. Win or lose. I think we need to work more on holding onto our big leads when we get them. No, I'm still not at liberty to comment on the Garnett situation, you probably know just as much as I do."

Garnett returns, Sonics blow lead for another loss

((Screenshots unavailable due to my dumbass not turning fraps on... sorry.))

Coach Bob Hill:

"First off, let me just say that it's great to have Kevin [Garnett] back. But.... I am absolutely disgusted with our inability to hold onto leads. This has happened almost every game now, even in our victories. We had a 14 point lead in the third quarter. FOURTEEN!"

Seattle solves Small Forward position, welcomes Martell Webster back to his hometown!

The instability of the small forward position has been a huge problem for the Sonics so far this year, as has the lackluster "Sophomore Slump" second year guard Isidore Snow has been experiencing. After making the all-rookie first team last year, Snow's production has fallen off sharply, partly due to the emergence of Cyrus Pierce.

The Sonics solved both problems with one trade today, sending Snow and center J. Petro to their Northwest rival Portland Trailblazers for third-year SF Martell Webster and rookie Honeycutt, who was included mostly as filler and may be released, pending discussions with the first year player.

The trade brings Martell back to his hometown of Seattle, WA- where he grew up and attended high school. And Martell couldn't be happier.

"I loved playing in Portland, don't get me wrong- it was a great organization and a great city. But this is home, and I'm glad to be here. Also, I'll be getting the chance to start and get more minutes here... back in Portland I was kind of getting buried, I was the third small forward at times. Anyway- I'm thrilled to have this chance, see you on the court."

Seattle coach Bob Hill said he's very pleased with the trade, and wishes Petro and Snow good luck in Portland. He also remarked that he didn't forsee the Sonics making any more changes this year.

Cyrus Pierce has a 93 rating on 3pt, Damien Wilkens is somewhere 80+, so is Dahntay Jones. Martell has a decent shot as well. Thanks for the comment :)

13 games into the season, Sonics playing .500 basketball

Statistical breakdown of (roughly) the first half of the season can be found here:

(By the way- I know I'm moving quickly and not posting every game- but I want to get into the future of this dynasty. I'm more playing for my own enjoyment than just for the sake of posting. :) )

Here are the boxscores for the 'missing' games.

PLAYOFF TIME!

Image

In what is sure to be an interesting first-round series, the Sonics are matched up with Kevin Garnett's old team, the Minnesota Timberwolves. Two seasons ago, the Sonics and T'Wolves made a trade that brought Kevin Garnett and Mark Madsen to Seattle, and sent Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis, and then-rookie Vincent Dehere to Minnesota.

Let's take a look at how the matchup looks on paper:

Seattle's roster:
Image
Minnesota's roster:
Image

Seattle on left, Minnesota on right

Starting Center:
Boris Diaw vs I. Tallas
*Clear advantage for the Sonics here, though Tallas has a good 3 inches on Diaw. Advantage: Seattle

Starting PF:
Kevin Garnett vs. Eddie Griffin
*Again- clear advantage for the Sonics. It's Garnett. Reigning MVP and favorite to repeat that title. Advantage: Seattle

Starting SF:
Martell Webster vs. Rashard Lewis
*The Timberwolves get this one. These two are very similar, but Lewis is older, stronger, and more experienced. Advantage Minnesota

Starting SG:
Cyrus Pierce vs. Ray Allen
*No matter how strong of a rookie season Pierce has had (over 16ppg), this is Ray Allen. After 12 years in the NBA, he still looks like he's in his prime. In a few years, Pierce might win this battle... but for now-
Advantage Minnesota

Starting PG:
Earl Watson vs. Marcus Banks
*This is a toss-up. Both are truly sub-par players who play a very small role on their teams. Advantage: none

6th man:
Dahntay Jones vs. Ricky Davis
*Just like the Webster/Lewis pairing, these are two very similar players, but Davis has more experience, and is much scrappier. Will be a good matchup to watch, but... Advantage: Minnesota

Bench:
*Seattle's bench is a hodgepodge of mostly small forwards and are used in no real rotation. It's been effective enough to lift them to the playoffs, but the Timberwolves bench may very well eat them alive. Rashad McCants, Marko Jaric, Trenton Hasell.... these are guys who can shoot you down. Clear, strong advantage to.... Minnesota
