This game has been hyped up for a long time now, and fans of both teams have been waiting and waiting on the matchup to happen and now it is, the first quarter of play was nothing less than what people expected. Both teams started out hot and remained hot the whole period. It doesnt seem that the Cleveland Cavaliers were able to stop anything the Pistons did but they made up for it by knocking down J's and finding the right shots to keep it close. Detroit had two players with 9 points at the end of the period, Rasheed Wallace and Chauncey Billups. Cleveland usually allows the point guard of the other team to do some damage to them in the first quarter of play but they have been able to partially contain Billups for the time being. The Detroit Pistons have a 1 point lead going into the 2nd quarter, (28-27).
The Cleveland Cavaliers were actually able to get ahead by a point for a few seconds but soon after that, the Detroit Pistons went on a tear and scored 8 straight points, in 1 minute and 20 seconds they had a 7 point lead. Still both teams going back and forth, either hitting it from down town maybe once or twice or driving to the basket at will, expecting the foul but hoping for "And 1". LeBron James finished the first half of play with 15 points, and Larry Hughes close behind with 14 points. Rasheed Wallace took control for his Pistons and ended up with 17 points at halftime. Even though Detroit has a 3 point lead at halftime, (49-46), I wouldnt just count on a garuntee made by Rasheed this time.
Look out Drew Gooden because Donyell Marshall is about to take that starting position at Power Forward. Marshall came into the 2nd half like he has the past games, just to see which player (Gooden-Marshall) will win the starting job. Gooden did go 100% from the field but he only shot one shot, and Donyell came in and made four straight baskets, 8 points, which helped greatly in Cleveland's 2 points lead going into the final period of play. Rasheed Wallace remained untouched as he just plowed over the Cleveland post players at will, and did exactly whatever he wanted to do.
It did come down to the wire, literaly the very end. 16.8 seconds left on the clock, and Donyell Marshall throws up a 12 foot jumper, swish. The Cleveland Cavaliers have a 97-96 lead with 11.3 left on the clock. Little mistakes have big consequences, just ask Zydrunas Ilgauskas. He forgot to get back and cover his man, Ben Wallace, which was wide open for the long pass and the SLAM!! Damon Jones takes the ball down court and throws up a prayer, but no, its bricks off of the right side of the rim, and the Detroit Pistons are the winner, 98-97.
Overview: What can you say about either of these teams, I mean we all know that the Cleveland Cavaliers could not go all season without a loss, and maybe its better to get it over with instead of getting upset late in the playoffs. The Detroit Pistons are a definent force to be reckoned with, and they proved that tonight against the hot Cavaliers. LeBron continued to average his 30 points per game, and Larry Hughes knocked down 20 of his own points. But, the big surprise was none other than Mr. Donyell Marshall. He came in for only 2 quarters and still managed to drop 18 points, compared to Drew Gooden's 2 points. There will be a decision made within the next few days, before the Cleveland Cavaliers' next game, as to who gets the position, Gooden of Marshall. Back to the Pistons, there is no doubt in my mind that they will make in to the Conference Finals where more than likely they will meet up with the Cavaliers, that would be one heck of a series of basketball. Cleveland still has a chance to pay them back though as they play Detroit one more time this season at home.
