KG and Co. visit Memphis
November 12, 2005

Will Kobe Bryant mess up the Grizzlies chemistry? Will Antonio Burks crumble as a starting point guard? Did the Grizzlies draft the wrong players? So far the answer to all three of those questions is NO! Kobe Bryant looked good against the Portland Trail Blazers, and he didn't even take that many shots. Pau Gasol looks improved and scored 24 points, one point under his new superstar teammate. Antonio Burks also looked good with 13 points and 3 assists, although Hubie Brown has said he wants those assist numbers to go up.

The Grizzlies got good hustle play from all of their bench, but there were two names that we didn't see clock any minutes in Portland. Shooting guards Dahntay Jones and Mike Miller didn't play at all, and here's what Hubie Brown had to say about that. "We really have a logjam at the shooting guard and small foward position, but we will find a way to work them into the rotation." It's clear to see that Head Coach Hubie Brown is gonna try different rotations to see which one works the best, so all you Mike Miller and Dahntay fans shouldn't send any hatemail just yet.

Thanks for the comments. I really think Pau is a franchise player so I wanted to keep him around, I did kinda screw LA but look how they screwed themselves in the Shaq trade.

I think I'm gonna watch the Spurs/Suns game, so the TWolves game will be up tomorrow not tonight. So check back, and keep coming with your comments/suggestions.

Kobe misses game winner
November 12, 2005

Lorenzen Wright won the tipoff as the Grizzlie fans got on their feet chanting "Kobe!". The fans got what they wanted when Pau Gasol got the ball to Kobe who hit a jumper over Latrell Sprewell. Keven Garnett and the Timberwolves got their first two points of the game from a Kobe Bryant foul. On the next possesion the Grizzlies used good ball movement to get Antonio Burks the ball beyond the arc, he dropped it and Memphis now led by three points. After a 8-0 run from the Minnesota Timberwolves, Lorenzen Wright and Kobe Bryant got back to back baskets and were now down by only one. Kobe Bryant and Antonio Burks used a pick and roll to get Kobe a three pointer, the Grizzlies now took the lead back but Sprewell hit a three pointer over Kobe Bryant which gave Minnesota a three point lead. The Timberwolves went on a short run but a Lorenzen Wright dunk ended that and cut the lead to three points. Shane Battier found a open Kobe who hit a three pointer and tied the game at 19-19. Mike Miller checked in for the first time in the 05-06 season and dropped a three pointer. Two Kevin Garnett freethrows tied the game buy Chucky Atkins ran down the court and threw up a three pointer with four seconds left, the shot fell and the Grizzlies were up by three points at the end of the first quarter.

End of First Quarter
Minnesota Timberwolves (2-2) - 25
Memphis Grizzlies (1-0) - 28

Troy Hudson opened the second quarter with a three pointer which tied the game. James Posey checked in and was fouled beyong the arc, he hit all three of the freethrows. Renjie Onyango got the ball and slammed it home with two hands as the crowd went fild, Mike Miller then hit his second three pointer of the night and gave Memphis a four point lead. On the next posession Renjie Onyango dunked it for his second basket of the game. Vladamir Jovanovski who's natural position is small foward, played most of the second quarter at the Power Foward position, backing up Pau Gasol who was having a off game. Vladamir along with his rookie pal Renjie kept the Grizzlies going strong in the game, the great passing of Antonio Burks helped as well. Antonio Burks tossed an alley to Lorenzen Wright which then gave the Memphis Grizzlies an eleven point lead, their largest of the night. Dahntay Jones came in for the first time and posterized veteran Kevin Garnett, they reshowed the dunk on the jumbotron as the crowd went insane./

Key Players At The Half
Kevin Garnett (MIN) - 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals
Lorenzen Wright (MEM) - 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks

Halftime
Minnesota Timberwolves (2-2) - 43
Memphis Grizzlies (1-0) - 52

Kevin Garnett took care of Pau Gasol on both ends.

The Grizzlies and Timberwolves went basket for basket for the first three minutes untill James Posey stole the ball and slammed it one hand for the fastbreak basket. Despite the great play of the two rookies, Coach Hubie Brown decided it was time to bring back Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, who weren't looking as good as they did against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Memphis Grizzlies worked the ball around finding Kobe on the permitier, Kobe got his 17th point of the game and Memphis was up by four. On the fastbreak Kobe came down with a windmill jam that got the entire FedExForum up chanting "Kobe! Kobe! Kobe!". But then Troy Hudson came off the bench and gave the Timberwolves the spark they needed. At the end of the third quarter, the Grizzlies were up by two and were looking tired and out of character.

End Of Third Quarter
Minnesota Timberwolves (2-2) - 72
Memphis Grizzlies (1-0) - 74

The fourth quarter started with the Grizzlies commiting numerous turnovers. The Timberwolves took advantage of the turnovers and at one point they led by seven points. Hubie Brown benched Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, the two still weren't playing with the urgency they had the game before. Antonio Burks came down and hit two back to back three pointers to give the Grizzlies a three point lead, the FedExForum was going crazy. After Minnesota tied it up 82-82, both teams began to struggle from the field. Kevin Garnett went for a dunk over Shane Battier, Battier fouled him and then began to clutch his arm in pain. He was helped off the court by teammates and Kevin Garnett hit both of the freethrows giving the Minnesota Timberwolves a three point lead. Trenton Hassell got a three point play and things were looking flat out bad for Memphis, but Kobe then hit a three pointer to cut the Timberwolves lead to only one point. After numerous missed baskets the TWolves led by 2, there was 16.0 seconds left on the clock and you could tell who the ball was going to. The entire arena got on their feet anticipating a shot from their newly aquired superstar, Kobe dribbled the ball around and went for a three, IT WAS BLOCKED! But it went out of bounds and the Grizzlies would get one more shot to send the game to overtime or to take the victory. Mike Miller inbounded the ball to Kobe who dribbled a bit and went for a two point, looking to send the game to overtime. The shot went up and bounced off the rim, Kobe walked off the court shaking his head as some Memphis fans began to boo him.

BREAKING NEWS: Kobe Bryant refuses to play for Grizzlies
November 14, 2005

Image

Two games into the season, Kobe Bryant has showed why he is so unliked. After the loss to the Timberwolves, Kobe Bryant went to Jerry West and explained that he wanted to be traded. West says that Kobe said "I never wanted to be here" and that "I just don't like the place." Kobe Bryant has averaed 24.5 points in two games with the Grizzlies, and looked happy to be with the Grizzlies at first. If Kobe didn't want to be in Memphis, why didn't he say so when he first got traded here?

It's just down right unprofessional to demand a trade in the middle of the season, and to refuse to play is a whole different thing. Kobe has said that he will not play for the Grizzlies, and that he would like to be traded to Minnesota, Phoenix, Philadelphia, or either of the two Los Angeles teams. We recieved word earlier tonight that Jerry West has been on the phone with teams who are interested in the star guard. We will keep you updated on this story, check back at Grizzlies.com!

BREAKING NEWS: Superstar guards switch teams
November 15, 2005

Image

Three days after Kobe Bryant expressed his desire to be traded from Memphis, Jerry West pulled the trigger on his second blockbuster deal in a year. The Memphis Grizzlies aquired Kobe Bryant in the summer and everything seemed fine, but after a two point loss to Minnesota, Kobe decided that he wanted a trade or he'd just sit-out. Jerry West quickly got on the phone with teams who had their eyes on the 3-time NBA champion, from Phoenix to the Timberwolves.

Jerry West and Billy King got on the phone late last night and decided on a deal. The Grizzlies would send Kobe Bryant and Dahntay Jones to the Philadelphia 76ers for the league's toughest little man Allen Iverson. Both teams are happy with what they got out of the deal, and West hopes that this won't hurt the Grizzlies too much. "I hope it doesn't take long for them to get use to Iverson, but I don't think that'll be a problem", said West earlier this morning.

Image
Iverson's hustle play should help him fit in with the Grizzlies

"Basketball is basketball, I'm not gon' demand no trade" said Iverson, who is confirmed for Wednesday's game against the Charlotte Bobcats. Allen Iverson has been a 76er his entire career, but he says that he's looking foward to playing for the Memphis Grizzlies. "They got a nice squad and a good coach, I think I'm gonna enjoy it down there", said Iverson. When asked what he thought about Kobe he simply laughed and said "Some people always gotta get things their way".

The Answer to the Grizzlies problems?
November 16, 2005

Tonight the Grizzlies will go up against the second year Charlotte Bobcats, but they won't have Kobe Bryant. Instead they will have a 6'0 little guy who shows nothing but heart everynight and defines hustle just as much as the Grizzlies. Kobe Bryant whined his way out of Memphis, but if you look at it, Allen Iverson fits the team way more than Kobe Bryant. When was the last time you saw Kobe Bryant hitting the floor for the loose ball? That's what I thought. Allen Iverson is hungry for a championship and saw are the Grizzlies, this has to be the best trade in team history. Allen Iverson finally has a supporting cast, which he hasn't had since the year he led the Sixers to the NBA championship.

Image
Iverson makes his Memphis debut tonight.

The Bobcats are still a very young team and this is just the game that Memphis needed after a loss to Minnesota and changing superstars. Allen Iverson and the Grizzlies will be using this game to get use to each other, expect Iverson to be looking to dish the ball to big man Pau Gasol early and often. Iverson has said he wanted a team that could compete for a title, and now he has one. Will him and the Grizzlies make beautiful music or will they be singing the blues? We'll see tonight in Charlotte, check back at Grizzlies.com for a recap of the game.

Grizz win by 40 in AI's debut
November 17, 2005

Allen Iverson and the rest of the Grizzlies made their way to the center of the court, they looked focused as the tipoff was getting ready to begin. Kwame Brown tapped the ball back to Shammond Williams, and the Charlotte Bobcats started the game off. The Bobcats caught Pau Gasol slipping on defense, and Emeka Okafor caught an alley with one hand and slammed it down hard for the first points of the game. Allen Iverson got the ball to Pau Gasol in the paint, he was fouled while shooting and he hit both of the freethrows. Iverson fought his way to the line and dropped in two free throws, his first points in his NBA career that didn't go to the Sixers. Mike Miller got the ball to Pau Gasol in the post he layed it up and already had four points, he only had seven points total in the previous game against Minnesota. Mike Miller deflected a Charlotte pass and James Posey got the ball on the fastbreak, he ran down and slammed the ball to give Memphis a three point lead. On the next Charlotte possesion, Iverson stole the ball and ran down the court with lighting speed to get the easy layup. On Charlotte's next possesion they had the ball blocked, Iverson then outran the transition defense and got in the paint. He attempted a layup but had it goaltended, the basket counted. Allen Iverson headed to the bench but that didn't stop the Grizzlies from continuing their great play. Antonio Burks got some baskets, and James Posey also hit a three pointer to put the Memphis Grizzlies up by 11 with 3:05 left in the first quarter. Vladamir Jovanovski came in and forced his way to the line, he made Kwame Brown commit his third foul and it was only the first quarter, the Grizzlies were up by 10 with 1:58 left in the first quarter. Vladamir then came back down on the next Grizzlies possesion and hit a shot over his defender, this rookie has been looking good in every game so far. Antonio Burks was fouled from beyond the arc by Brevin Knight, he hit both freethrows and the Grizzlies now led 30-16 with 16.0 left in the first quarter. Allen Iverson checked back in, he found his way into the paint and got double teamed. He passed out of the double team and got the ball to Brian Cardinal who dunked it with one hand to end the quarter.

End of First Quarter
Memphis Grizzlies (1-1) - 32
Charlotte Bobcats (1-0) - 16

It seemed like the Grizzlies couldn't drop a shot, but Iverson stole the ball yet again and layed it up to give the Grizzlies a 14 point lead. Him and Pau Gasol were tied at 8 with the most points in the game with 7:47 left in the second quarter. Scott Padgett came down and hit another three pointer for Charlotte, Padgett now led all scorers with 10 points. Allen Iverson found Shane Battier off the pick and roll, Battier hit one from downtown and Iverson now had a team high 2 assists. Iverson once again abused Shammond Williams, forcing him to give up the ball. Iverson jetted down the court and layed it up, he now had 10 points and was tied with Scott Padgett for the leading scorer of the game. Shammond Williams then showed some anger as he faught his way to the basket and drew the three point play from Renjie, he hit the freethrows and completed the three point play. Allen Iverson found Lorenzen Wright in the post he did a nasty dunk on Emeka Okafor, who could do nothing but just look on as Lorenzen and Iverson celebrated. Scott Padgett tried to fake out Brian Cardinal, but Cardinal stole the ball and got it to Shane Battier on the break. Battier bounced it to Iverson who layed it up in traffic, Iverson now had a game high 12 points with 6:26 left in the second quarter. On the next Bobcats posession, Iverson knocked the ball away and picked up another easy fastbreak layup. The score was 47-26 in favor of the Grizzlies, with 4:50 left in the second quarter. Lorenzen Wright blocked the Bobcats ball and Iverson got the ball, he found Mike Miller who drained the long three. Allen Iverson went to the bench but the Grizzlies still kept a tight hold on the Bobcats, Pau Gasol came in and scored some baskets late in the second to keep the lead big for Memphis.

Key Players At The Half
Allen Iverson (MEM) - 14 points, 4 rebounds, 6 steals
Scott Padgett (CHA) - 13 points, 2 steals

Halftime
Memphis Grizzlies (1-1) - 60
Charlotte Bobcats (1-0) - 37

Lorenzen Wright opened the third quarter for the Grizzlies by faking out Kwame Brown and finishing with a dunk, Iverson jumped up off the Memphis bench yelling and cheering as Lorenzen smiled on his way back up court. Shane Battier blocked a Bobcats attempt and then took the ball all the way up court, a Bobcats defender caught up with him but he still finished with the layup. After a few struggles on the offensive end, we saw James Posey cross over Scott Padgett and take it all the way home for the one handed jam. Lorenzen Wright and Pau Gasol demolished the Bobcats at will, and had got the lead up to 30 points. Allen Iverson checked in and picked up another steal, he layed it up and the score was in favor of the Grizzlies 72-39. Iverson then stole the ball from Shammond Williams once again and tossed it up to Pau Gasol he dunked it with two hands. Scott Padgett hit a three pointer but on the next possesion AI dished it to Brian Cardinal he drained a three pointer. Iverson used a pick and roll on the next Grizzlies possesion to get in the paint and DUNK OVER ROBERT TRAYLOR! Even the Charlotte fans got on their feet and cheered as Iverson put the "Did you just see that?" look on his face. Iverson and Gasol were now had 18 points a piece, and led all scorers. The Grizzlies continued the assault on Charlotte, and were up by 29 at the end of the third quarter.

The Grizzlies started off the fourth quarter when Vladamir grabbed a offensive board, and slammed it back with one hand. Lorenzen Wright continued to dominate Kwame Brown, dunking over him with ease. Vladamir Jovanovski got a couple of baskets but then Lorenzen Wright came back and dunked on Kwame Brown yet again. 0-5 Raptors head to the FedExForum
November 19, 2005

The Memphis Grizzlies looked very impressive against the Charlotte Bobcats. Sure the Bobcats are just a second year team, but winning by 40 points is good no matter the circumstance. The Grizzlies came out with the hustle they're known for times 3, get it? times 3? Allen Iverson finished with a great stat line, and he sat out the entire 4th quarter. Pau Gasol and Lorenzen Wright benefited from Iverson alot in game one, and hopefully they will continue to benefit from it.

Image
Pau and Lorenzen dominated the front court.

The trade for Iverson also helped balance out the Grizzlies rotation, it helped get rid of the logjam at shooting guard and small foward. Now everyone knows who they'll be backing up, and the Grizzlies two rookies will see an increase in their playing time. "I was like a kid in a candyshop, there was so much stuff I wanted to try", said Iverson.

The Grizzlies were vicious on defense and dominating on the offensive end, they shut down Rookie of the Year winner Emeka Okafor with ease. Tomorrow the 0-5 Raptors will fly into town and will be looking to pick up their first victory of the season. Will the Grizzlies be able to contain Chris Bosh? And will that be enough to secure a victory? Toronto has some deadly three point shooters that will make the Grizz work for the win in front of their home crowd. You can check out the game on FSN South like always, and then check back here afterwards for a recap of the game.

Raptors bite into Grizzlies
November 20, 2005

The FedExForum was filled with people wearing Iverson jerseys, and holding up signs welcoming AI to Memphis. When he was introduced the crowd went extremely crazy, both teams then made their way to center court. Lorenzen Wright tipped it back to Allen Iverson as the fans began to cheer in the FedExForum, the game then began. Allen Iverson ran in and drew the defense, he then passed it out to Mike Miller who was alone on the perimiter. Mike Miller hit the three pointer an the Grizzlies were up 3-0, Iverson had 1 assist. The Grizz and Raptors both went basket for basket, the game was tied at 7. That was untill Iverson got the ball to Mike Miller again who hit a three pointer and put the Grizzlies up by three, he led the Grizzlies in scoring with eight points. Rafter Alson hit two three pointers in a row for the Raptors, and the Grizzlies now trailed by three points. Iverson came off the Pau Gasol pick and dropped in a three pointer to tie the game at 13-13 with 4:45 left in the first quarter. The Grizzlies took the lead back thanks to a Iverson steal and layup, the Grizzlies led by three points. While bringing the ball up court, Alston was stripped and then dunked on my Allen Iverson who had now scored two baskets in a row. After exchanging baskets late in the quarter, a last second Shane Battier jumper gave the Grizzlies a one point lead.

End of First Quarter
Toronto Raptors (0-5) - 22
Memphis Grizzlies (2-1) - 23

Vladamir checks in at the beginning of the second quarter and goes for a three pointer, he misses but Brian Cardinal gets the board and throws it back out to him. Vladamir throws up another three pointer and it falls in, nothing but net. After both teams began struggling to drop shots, Vladamir put up another three pointer and it went in. The Grizzlies rookies began to shine with Iverson and Pau Gasol on the bench, and the Raptors had no answer. Jovanovski was throwing up three pointers, and the ones that didn't fall were rebounded by fellow rookie teammate Renjie Onyango. At this point the Grizzlies led by eight points, and Jovanovski led the team in scoring with nine points. Vladamir made a mistake when he fouled Ronald Murray beyond the arc, Murray made two out of three freethrows. Vladamir Jovanovski hit from near three point range, but the refs said it was only a two, the lead was now back up to eight. The Raptors started to go on a run and Hubie Brown decided it was time to bring back in his starters with 2:41 left in the second quarter.Donyell Marshall gave the Raptors the lead with 1:52 left, after a fast break slam dunk.
