Re: Its_asdf's Raptors Dynasty - Week 10+NBA News

good to see the bench stepping up big in Bosh's absence :applaud: was also thinking maybe Vinsanity was limited by fouls or MPs but stats don't lie - zero fouls and even logged one more minute than Heller... Heller > Carter? No. not yet anyway, at least til they've played a few more times and Heller continues to torch him convincingly

impressive first impression nonetheless ;)

this trade has turned out good for you so far. Can't wait to see how this dynasty will play out.

Antoine Heller breakout party. This kid seems to be able to do everything on the court. You really love to play with the created rookies but more important you know how to handle them to your advantage.

wow heller and terrell are good pieces and hopefully will be enough for Bosh to stay. I'm wondering now if having Heller and if he keeps playing great will make Calderon tradeable. I don't see why you can't get to the playoffs with the team you have.

Raps Outlast Cleveland in Comeback Win (109-106 Raptors)

January 16, 2010

The Raptors extended their winning streak to four games as they had yet another nail biter against one of the top teams in the East. The Cavs were fuelled by their inside-out tandem of LeBron James and prized off-season acquisition Shaquille O'Neal for the majority of the game. This was in contrast to the Raptors more well balanced Raptor attack where no one scored over 20 points. Former Trail Blazers Channing Frye and Antoine Heller paced the Raptors with 19 points apiece.

A barn burner right from the get go, the game seldomly had any swings in momentum with both teams keeping it relatively close. Both teams also received plenty of help from key X-Factors off the bench, as Rodney Carney and Wally Szczerbiak both provided an energetic punch in limited action. It was Carney however that managed to give the Raptors crucial minutes down the stretch, scoring 9 of his 11 points in the final 4 minutes of the game - including the the go-ahead three point play with 42.7 seconds left. "We had a really tough time handling their guards tonight," Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said. "Heller and Calderon both shot and passed the ball very well while Carney was too athletic for our defenders late in the game."

Image
Channing Frye ended a great game as he welcomed rookie Walt Lue into the NBA by swatting the ball into the stands.

Notes:
-This entire week for the Raptors comprises of two back to backs as they travel to Milwaukee to play the Bucks tomorrow and then rematch the Nets and the Bobcats at the ACC.
-LeBron James is currently one of the MVP favourites with averages of 18.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists.
-Wally Szczerbiak's 17 points off the bench is his season high thus far.

Bucks' Front Court Halts Toronto's Streak (97-92 Bucks)

January 17, 2010

Toronto attempted to go for a season-high five game winning streak but the Milwaukee Bucks' frontcourt had other plans. Even though the Raptors continued to get a solid effort out of newly acquired big man Channing Frye (18 points and 9 rebounds), the trio of former number one pick Andrew Bogut, ex-Raptor Charlie Villanueva and rookie Dominic Hunter all had double-doubles.

Raptors head coach Jay Triano was not only unimpressed about his team being out-rebounded 47-38, but also his team's failure to rotate defensively. "We looked scared out there," he said, referring to the Bucks' 50% shooting. "Not only did we allow them to out-hustle us on the boards but everytime they got the ball we panicked on the defensive end."

Despite a lacklustre shooting night for the Raptors, most of the team's offensive woes came from Jose Calderon and Andrea Bargnani. The usually efficient European duo combined for only 4 for 24 shooting and went 0 for 4 from beyond the arc. "We knew that coming into this game that they had a lot of offensive firepower," Bucks guard Michael Redd said after scoring a game-high 22 points. "As long as we stopped two of their important shot creators, we knew we could win this game."

Image
Redd's fade-aways from mid range were too difficult to overcome.

Notes:
-The Raptors and the Bucks are currently jostling for the 9th spot in the Eastern standings, with the Raptors now sitting at tenth place.
-Michael Redd has the fifth highest points per game average at 19.7
-Bargnani's 1/9 shooting performance and season low 3 points is his worst outting this season.

Raptors on Cruise Control Against the Nets (103-84 Raptors)

January 20, 2010

It seemed like both teams were going to be in for a long night as Brook Lopez and Jose Calderon both had to leave the game early in the first quarter after a scary collision. Both players lay on the floor clutching their legs soon afterwards and were forced to sit out for most of the game. As a result, both teams were awful from the field in the opening quarter as the Raptors missed Calderon's playmaking ability while the Nets lacked Lopez's effective inside presence.

Fortunately for the Raptors, Antoine Heller managed to easily slide over to the point guard position which worked wonders for the Raptors offense. The rookie combo guard led a strong second quarter charge which saw him tally 6 of his game-high 8 assists and propelled the Raptors to a 57-47 lead by half-time. Andrea Bargnani was the recipient of many of those assists, scoring 13 points; 9 of which came from three three pointers. "This just shows you how versatile and deep this team can be," spoke Calderon of Heller's 12 point 6 rebound and 8 assist night. Both Jose and Lopez would both return to action in the third quarter as both players' injuries were thankfully revealed to be minor.

New Jersey dominated the offensive glass all game long with 20 rebounds on the offensive end, but struggled to capitalize on the Raptors' poor interior D. The Nets shot only 39% from the field despite all of their second chance points, and Rafer Alston crippled his team's offense with a disastrous 0 for 13 performance. "They were lucky to have caught so many breaks," said Nets rookie Dante Oliver after stuffing the stat sheet with a 12 point, 10 rebound, 3 steals and 3 blocks night. "With Brook hurt, our offense kind of fell apart."

Image
Brook Lopez's early injury allowed the Raptors to take the early lead and never let it go.

Notes:
-The Nets are now 1 in their last 5
-The last time these two teams met was on December 17 when the Raptors lost 101-96.
-New Jersey's poor assist total this game (12) shows why they are next to bottom in the league in assists. Devin Harris averages 6.3 dimes per game to lead the Nets in that category.

Raps Edge Away with Steady Offense (93-86 Raptors)

January 21, 2010

Much like the Raptors' surprise victory over the Cavaliers this week, unselfishness was the name of the game for Toronto this game, as 6 players scored in double figures for the Raptors with none of them scoring over 20 points. Channing Frye and Antoine Heller paced the Raptors once again with 17 points each while Chuck Terrell followed closely behind with a 16 point 9 rebound effort. This enabled the Raptors to climb above .500 since December 9th.

"It was a pretty competitive game through all 48 minutes and we really pushed ourselves to play team basketball because of it," Heller said as he and Calderon combined for 15 of the team's 27 assists. The Raptors have been a very cohesive unit as of late, as evidenced from their 50% field goal percentage. However, they struggled to get their high tempo offense ignited as they allowed the Bobcats 15 offensive rebounds which helped mask Charlotte's shooting woes and keep the game close. "We were kind of slowed down to their pace because of all those offensive rebounds but when we did touch the ball it would always lead to an easy shot," Heller added.

The slower paced game also allowed Charlotte to attack the basket much more frequently, resulting in a plethora of free throws. The Bobcats shot 31 free throws, but once again their inability to hit shots cost them as they only coverted on 22 of those attempts. "I liked our energy and hustle, but the same can't be said for our shot taking and defense," said Larry Brown. "We can't compete at a high level if we're heaving up bricks on every attempt."

Image
Martell Webster's smooth play running off screens helped Toronto off the bench.

Notes:
-Charlotte are currently losers of 6 straight games.
-The Bobcats are also the worst in the NBA at knocking down their shots, sitting at 41% as a team. It doesn't help when their starting shooting guard Dean Friedman shoots only 35% from the field.
-This marks the third time this season that Roko Ukic has logged 10+ minutes in a game. The Croatian guard previously logged 11 minutes of play in a loss against the Sixers on December 27.

Raptor of the Week

Image
Antoine Heller

Although Chuck Terrell and Channing Frye are both just as deserving for the Raptor of the Week award, Frye has had one off game while Terrell would simply be a boring pick at this point. Heller on the other hand has shown great flashes of being the two gaurd that the Raptors have been coveting all season long. Simply put, the 6'6 guard has brought it all to the table this week and Heller has definitely raised expectations that are being set on him. Scoring punch? Check. Versatility? Check. Defense and hustle? Check. A walking ESPN highlight reel that can bring fans out of their seat? Check. Let's just hope that he doesn't hit the rookie wall late into the season because the kid definitely opened some eyes this week.

thierryhenry50 - I'm really warming up to Heller... At first I wanted to throw in that Penny Hardaway comparison in his scouting report just for show, but the guy's been absolutely tearing it up lately.

MikeMan™ - I usually don't have one specific defender guarding the team's opposing big men. My sub patterns usually involve subbing out whoever's tired/having their crappier game in place for Reggie Evans and will make either Frye/Bargs the centre and alternate from there on out. So I guess you can say that throwing multiple defenders really hurt him. :) Also, Dwight's primacy rating is pretty high; I think the game's AI is just too outdated to recognize how much of a force Dwight Howard is.

Sit- Damn right! Rookie game MVP here I come.

john26 - Thanks for following John, it's a bummer about what hapepend with your 2k9 assocation. Hopefully you'll start another one up soon enough.

Martti. - He definitely has been. I initially was planning on having Webster become the team's 2 guard, but Heller's slashing ability and Terrell's growing comfort from beyond the arc has really been beneficial.

homicide1550 - Think again! I'm actually loathing the day that Bosh will come back to honest. Right now I like how well balanced the team is in terms of scoring and with the emergence of Heller/Frye in the starting 5 the stance of never trading Bosh is now suddenly not so firm for me....

XpLosibo - I wouldn't really call Heller Air Canada... He's not quite as explosive as a leaper (his dunk pack is mostly layups with a generic dunk once in a while in the open), but he certainly is almost LeBron James-esque in his ability to rebound/pass the ball.

Clutch - It looks like that first impression wasn't a fluke either. All of the games that I've simmed thus far have had Heller scoring around 15+ points with 5+ boards and 5+ assists in the starting lineup.... It looks like the AI wants him to succeed as badly as I do.

dascoot - I'm curious myself. I don't really have a set plan when it comes to my dynasties, although every time I try to plan ahead I kind of do something completely different. It's part of what makes the dynasty so fun I guess. Yeah and I've also noticed that I've got a boat load of point guards that are expendable at this point (especially with Heller being an absolute monster so far) and I might toy with the notion of dealing Bosh and or Calderon, even though I initially came into the dynasty believing that I would never lay a finger on either of them...

hova- - Well it's easy to play with rookies when you DBF edit them to your liking. :P Originally Heller was like a 6'1 shooting guard along with a couple of others in the draft. I was forced to bump up a lot of the computer generated rookies' ratings and heights because of how flawed the system is and to make things fair.

Heller is doing a great job on passing. Actually I think that Calderon is the better shooter whilst Heller is more unselfish. Very good games by Frye. I really liked this guy back in my Knicks dynasty's days. He can really do some damage with his 12 foot jumper. A really good week and it seems like you just pulled the right deal.

Third Time's the Charm for the Raptors (101-93 Toronto)

January 23, 2010

Toronto's victory could not have come at a better time as they beat the Bulls for the first time this season. Not only was this their first win against Chicago after two other losses, but this also marked a crucial game to jostle for the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

"You usually don't see the type of atmosphere that you saw today in a regular season game," noted Raptors veteran Reggie Evans. "We knew that there was a lot more at stake than just another win or loss, and we just used the momentum of our winning streak to put us over the top."

Evans referred to the three way tie for the eighth spot that was between Milwaukee, Chicago and Toronto that was broken after this game. All three teams had a 20-19 record prior to this game, while Toronto has taken a slight lead in the standings and the eighth spot as a result of this victory.

Toronto's high octane offense was once again at work, especially in the second half where Toronto pulled ahead after a poor second quarter allowed the Bulls to take a 49-46 lead. This was the first and only lead that Chicago had in the game, and were easily pushed back by big quarters from Antoine Heller and Joes Calderon. Heller scored 11 points in the third while Calderon netted 8 in the fourth.

Image
Calderon's jumper was falling from all angles tonight.

Notes:
-Prior to this game, the Bulls would have retained the eighth seed if the playoffs had started because they currently one-up both the Raptors and the Bucks in their respective regular season series'.
-Heller's 23 points ties his previous career high that he set back in Portland.
-This marks the first game between the Raptors and the Bulls where Ben Gordon did not score over 20 points. He currently averages 22 points against the team north of the border this season.

Raptor Starters Make Short Work of Sacramento (114-90 Raptors)

January 26, 2010

Three Raptor starters scored 20 points or more to propel the Raptors to yet another four game winning streak. Chuck Terrell and Jose Calderon finished the night with some spectacular numbers; Terrell had a nice all-around game while Calderon continued his efficient passing and shooting, but the spotlight was stolen by Channing Frye. Frye set a new career high in rebounds, grabbing 18 to compliment an all-around stat stuffing statline of 20 points, 5 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks.

"It was probably the best game I've ever played... It's so difficult to describe how focused I was," Frye said as he tried to recall his magnificient all around game. "Everything was moving in slow motion it seemed. I felt like I was just moving two steps ahead of everyone else and beat everyone to their spots."

Frye's fantastic game translated on to the defensive end as well, severely crippling the Kings' inside-outside play. Spencer Hawes and Jason Thompson shot a combined 8 for 28 from the field, disrupting the Kings' offense dearly as they shot only 38% from the field and never led once throughout the game.

What detracted from Frye's sensational night was a potentially serious injury to rookie Antoine Heller. The rookie guard was clotheslined by Andres Nocioni during a fastbreak dunk attempt at the 4:28 mark of the fourth quarter and landed awkwardly head first on the floor. "Everyone went quiet when that happened," said Raptors coach Jay Triano. "Nobody likes to see that happen, especially to a young up and coming player like Heller." Heller was carried off in a stretcher after staying on the floor completely immobile for a couple of minutes. The score at that time was 98-73, with Heller finishing the game with 18 points and 4 assists.

Image
Channing Frye put up a KG-esque statline tonight.

Notes:
-While Heller's neck injury was definitely a cringe worthy moment, team doctors have said that the injury should not be life-threatening. More updates on Antoine's status will come later this week.
-Chuck Terrell was assessed a technical foul after a heated verbal confrontation with Nocioni following Heller's injury.
-This marks Jose's first back to back 20 point games this season.
-The Raptors' 37 points scored in a quarter is the highest thus far in the season. The previous season-high was 36 in a victory against the Memphis Grizzlies on December 18th.

Brand Does it All for A Sixers Victory (98-92 Philhadelphia)

January 28, 2010

The struggling Sixers got a much needed victory as the Raptors' season-high winning streak was stopped at four games for the second time. With rookie guard Antoine Heller out of the lineup, the Raptors lacked the scoring punch they sorely needed at the two guard. Martell Webster started in Heller's absence, but had an unmemorable starter's debut with 8 points and 4 rebounds.

Philadelphia on the other hand got fabulous production from the big three of Elton Brand, Andre Iguodala and Andre Miller. After great outings from Jose Calderon and Channing Frye last game in Sacramento, both players struggled to keep their opposing counterparts in check and struggled to make an impact on the offensive end. Rodney Carney filled in nicely at the two guard with 13 points, but nothing the Raptors threw at the Sixers was enough to overcome Brand's monstrous 34-17-8 statline.

Toronto managed to keep the game close, but poor shooting in the first, third and fourth quarters kept the Raptors from taking any leads - A recurring problem that was reminiscent of the Raptors prior to obtaining Heller. "We definitely missed him out on the floor, but we can't use that as a crutch," Webster said. "We all need to step up in his absence - Myself included."

Image
Elton Brand has revitalized his career by playing the center position.

Notes:
-The Sixers' 8 game losing streak included a recent stretch of six games where Philly had lost by 13 points or more.
-Despite their poor play of late, the Sixers have continued to get fantastic production out of Brand. He currently sits at fourth in the league in points per game (19.7) and rebounds (10.2).
-Former Raptor Jason Kapono has been beaten out of the rotation by Tanner Fairchild, whose play-style out of West Illinois is eerily similar to Kapono's (white 2 guard who can't do anything else).
-The Raptors activated Marcus Banks and gave him 18 minutes for the first time this season. All signs point to Colangelo attempting to up his trade value in an attempt to move the UNLV guard.

Raptor of the Week

Image
Chuck Terrell

Jose Calderon and Channing Frye were other viable candidates for the Raptor of the Week award as both players had posted great numbers this week (Frye with his monster 20-18-5 statline and Calderon with back to back 20+ games shooting at least 50%) but they also followed them up with some stinkers at Philadelphia. Terrell on the other hand hasn't been torching defenses like he usually does, but has sacrificed his offensive production by focusing on other areas of his game. When Terrell isn't scoring, you can count on him to be ripping down rebounds or kicking it out to a wide open shooter. The cherry on top has to be Chuck's 6 swats in three games, which is unusual for a player of his stature and athleticism.

Andrew - I was pretty excited at how powerful my starting lineup would've become with Bosh back, but this team doesn't seem to be able to catch a break. I'm loving the curve balls that are being thrown at me though, it's fun attempting to juggle the lineups with different personnel being active. Guess my glut at the guard spots might finally pay off afterall.

hova- - Frye is definitely one of my secret man-crushes in the NBA. Very humble and well spoken and I thought he was really underutilized in Portland with the depth that they have at the PF/C positions. He's going to do big things in Phoenix this year.

Martti. - It sucks that he received such a nasty injury because he was really coming on to his own. I think his game really compliment the starters (a slasher who can accommodate any lineup on the floor with his versatile) which is why he's so effective. it's a shame I don't really have any other player like that on the team to replace him at the two guard.

Clutch - Hunter is kind of like Luc Mbah Moute (however the hell you spell it, too lazy to look it up). He's really a power 4 trapped in a 3's body and really has no perimeter game to speak of. Gotta love those pure hustle and rebounding types.

john26 - Frye was compared to Bosh a teeny weeny bit I think prior to being drafted. He's definitely got the mid range game which makes him pretty easy to acclimate into the offensive schemes considering Bosh is mainly used as a face up big man at the top of the circle anyway.

thierryhenry50 - I was really hoping for Frye to be just a 10-6 guy and a stopgap until Bosh returns, but I really like how lanky he is on offense. He can shoot over just about anybody and I'm tempted to just spam the dunk button everytime he's close to the rim because he can usually throw it down over anyone. :P

MikeMan™ - At first I was skeptical of the idea but I've grown to think of it as an alternative the more I see Frye/Heller play. It's definitely an option I will explore, especially considering the lineup that I'm using right now is exactly how I like my teams (up-tempo high scoring with well-rounded stats all-around).

Re: Its_asdf's Raptors Dynasty - Week 12

I went through the same thing when Gordon was out in my 06 Dynasty. I did find that even with the moves I made I still struggled a bit, but it made things interesting and I'd hoenstly say it was my favourite Dynasty game to date. Hopefully this Dynasty will be just as fun for you.

It's good to see you staying above .500 for the moment, with the way your rookies are playing I reckon you just need to stay afloat until Bosh returns and then you'll surge down the stretch. It might be a bit of an adjustment after he gets back, I reckon you'll probably end up force-feeding him a bit in your enthusiasm to have him back (certainly happened to me with Gordon in the aforementioned Dynasty) but within a couple of games you should have the rotation and offense under control and hopefully, become a force to be reckoned with at the right time of the year.

Bosh Set to Return But Freak Injury Leaves Heller Sidelined
Rookie Guard Could Miss At Least Two Weeks, Doctors Say

Mike Ulmer - raptors.com
January 29, 2010

Image

With Chris Bosh ready to go against Phoenix to wrap up the month of January, the Raptors were struck with the injury bug yet again. This time, Antoine Heller is reported to have neck spasms that would sideline him for at least two weeks, according to team medical staff.

"It's difficult to give a proper time frame for these types of injuries," Heller had said to the media, sporting a suit with a neck brace. "The doctors told me that there will be days when I feel like I can play ahead of schedule and then there will be days when I'll be in pain for the entire day. It'll be hard to tell when I'll be at 100%, but for now I can only take it one day at a time."

Heller injured his neck in a scary fall after Andres Nocioni knocked him to the floor during the Raptors' blowout win against Sacramento. The guard out of Santa Clara landed on to the floor during a brutual looking fall head-first. The Raptors were 6-1 with Heller in the starting lineup as the 6'6 combo guard quickly became an integral part of the Raptors after being traded from the Portland Trail Blazers.

Raptors Forward Blasts Refs and Nocioni After Heller's Injury

Ever since his greatly hyped high-school days, Chuck Terrell has always been labelled by the media as an interesting personality that isn't afraid to speak his mind. This time it might have seemed like he has said too much. Terrell has been fined $25,000 by the NBA and suspended for the Raptors' road game against Phoenix after the comments that he made towards Nocioni and the officials refereeing the game.

The recently turned 20 rookie was quick to bash NBA officials, outraged that no other penalty was assessed to Andres Nocioni. "Really? You're just going to turn the blind eye to that?" exclaimed Terrell to the media when he was told that Nocioni was getting away without any disciplinary action. "I'm sorry, but that's absolutely bogus. The fact that there wasn't even a flagrant given out shows you how terrible the officiating is. What a joke."

Terrell's tirade was far from over. Chuck then called out Nocioni and questioned the true intention of the foul. "I don't know why you'd pull a stunt like that knowing what could potentially happen. I mean your team's down big and it's pretty much garbage time, so why would you foul him like that? That's just a low blow, man."

"He's a punk, bottom-line," Terrell continued. "It was intentional. I know it and you can't tell me otherwise. He just got frustrated that we were giving his team a beat down on their floor and took out his anger on Antoine."

One of Heller's closest friends since he was traded to Portland, Terrell also showed his disbelief during the game as well. Terrell was the only Raptor on the floor who started a heated arguement and shoving match with Nocioni after he committed the hard foul and had to be restrained by teammates. Terrell was given a technical foul shortly afterwards.

While Raptors head coach Jay Triano does not condemn his 6'7 Rookie of the Year candidate for standing up for his teammates, he believes that Terrell's suspension was justified. "I know how he feels, especially considering his relationship with Antoine, but that's just not the right way to go about it," Triano said. "Hopefully he can take this suspension in stride and become more mature because of it."

Andrew - Well with Heller out and Bosh back in it'll be addition by subtraction. With Frye coming off the bench now hopefully I can be able to compensate for Heller's offensive production.

Yeah that's a tough break. Injuries certainly haven't been kind to you this season.

While Raptors head coach Jay Triano does not condone his 6'7 Rookie of the Year candidate for standing up for his teammates, he believes that Terrell's suspension was justified.

I think you might mean "condemn" there. ;) Great write-ups other than that though, I like that you've added a suspension in there to spice things up though you've given yourself an added challenge at the worst possible time!

nice! Terrell's already showing the gritty demeanor that will make him a fine color commentator one day when he's retired and soft-bellied and front-runner to replace another outspoken 'Chuck' many years from now ;)

Great wins man, also a shame that Heller got injured. Brand fourth in scoring with only 19.2 pts, that's a low number.

Ouch, that hurts. You got Bosh back, but were actually playing better without him. :P It will be tough for you against the Suns, unless someone else steps up big time. (Carney perhaps?)

Tough time ahead without Heller but I'm sure you have lots of depth to cover the loss. :)

EDIT: Congratulations on 5000 posts! I remember you from my 2005 days!
