Tuesday 10th of April Memphis @ Detroit
Preview:
Detroit once again plays at home against a rejuvenated 16-10 Memphis. This game kicks off what will definitely be the hardest month for Detroit as they face Chicago, Golden State and a 17-9 Nuggets outfit. Detroit come into the game as strong favourites in what will definitely be a battle of two powerful insides as Gasol, Swift, Nowitzki and Shaquille O’Neal go at each other. The Grizzlies will go into the game high on confidence after a late run and will definitely use this game to there benefit win or lose. The key for both teams will be to keep the ball out of the lane and have active hands as has been the case of recent for Detroit. Some threats the Grizzlies will have to watch out are Billups ability to get inside and then find open opponents although overall don’t underestimate the grizzlies and 3PK’S prediction is the grizzlies to pull over the line 97-92

Summary
1st Quarter The game started off with three great Memphis plays as they cut Billups passes of then ran the break to score on all 3 attempt to lead 6-0. The great hustle didn’t stop there as they deflected a pistons ball and ran out to an 8-0 lead. But through perseverance and hard work the pistons came back within 4 points. The Grizzlies where performing their plans perfectly as they didn’t although Billups to find any passing lanes and they used there strengths on offence and kept the dominate Pistons back court out of the game. At this stage the game was beginning to flow into a rhythm in which one Detroit didn’t like as the where forced to set up offence and weren’t allowed to run there dangerous fast break. The game was being dictated by the Grizzlies as they led 12-6 but this was just before Nowitzki ignited a 6-0 run to tie it up at 12 a piece. From this the game slowed down to a withering and boring pace in which Memphis where accelerating in as they drew constant fouls on Detroit to see Billups and Shaq out of the game after just 6 minutes in foul trouble. The last to minutes where stacked with relentless and determined plays as both team tried to find a break but it was a sharp Memphis team that had a 5 point lead with 30 seconds to go in the quarter. Although with some brilliance Howard scored a 3 point play and jammed down to tie it up after one at 23-23.
2nd Quarter The second quarter started of well as Howard continued he’s recent great form although suddenly there was shocking news as once again Pistons game source Josh Howard had to leave the game with what looked like an leg injury after he was hacked by Swift on his way to the basket. Although just 3 plays after Memphis got there just deserts as Stoudemire there key player got injured and also left the court. This brought to a sudden change of events as the pistons lost there key to goal and the grizzlies jumped ahead 34-29. Although the pistons really didn’t want to let this one go as they drove to the basket with no fear and with 4:22 to play took a 35-34 lead. Then Memphis got two pieces of good news as they regained the lead and Damon Stoudemire re-entered the game with nothing but a little scab to contemplate. Although this brought on a vicious Pistons run as the bruised and battered there way to a 43-36 lead. Although in the last two minutes it was Memphis getting the better hand to draw Shaq’s 3rd foul and trail by just four 45-41
Players at the half
Game Note: [The first half was all big men and the small had very little impact]
Detroit
Dirk Nowitzki 14 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist
Memphis
P. Gasol 11 points, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block
3rd Quarter In the second half Howard was cleared to play and he seemed a even better player then he’s mere 1st half shadow. The pistons came out with a completely different game plan and strategy as it was certain they had adjusted to the slow defence and then dictated there offence in which was played at a hectic pace with few turnovers and lots of score. This was resulting in constant Detroit baskets and they took the lead out to 9 points, but with great play and a quick change of play the Grizzlies went on a 6-0 run to trail 51-54. Detroit then tried to do all in there power to wear down Gasol as they dumped it inside and contested every rebound and it was paying off as he struggled to run the court at a strong consistent pace and ultimately there where losing there great 1st half defence. But somehow Memphis never let Detroit break away as they kept in dangerous and unfamiliar pistons territory to stay around 3 to 7 points in tact. But some Shaq Brilliance saw the lead back out to 10 as he powered to home on consecutive plays, But the Olowokandi (the candy man) dropped some big baskets including a three point play to get them once again within 4. Then both teams found a few baskets and Memphis found themselves trailing by just 4 points (74-70) in what was the Pistons biggest challenge so far bar the Suns Loss.
4th Quarter The last quarter tone was set by Memphis as they blocked the pistons twice and got a 24 second violation. Although this tone was short lived as Detroit ran the break with no fear and took an 82-73 lead. Both teams then began to trade buckeyes in a showdown of great offences but the pistons kept a 86-79 break on the Grizzlies. Shaquille O’Neal re-entered and he was playing his best pistons game ever as he showed Gasol the true meaning of a power dunk, with that in context Gasol wasn’t intimidated or put in fear and he showed Shaq the true meaning of skill and strength combined as he opened up he’s dominate repute and scored a powerful three point play. This inspired the Grizzlies as the sucked the crowd right out the game and ties it up at 88-88. But the pistons where consistent in feeding that point loving post and Dirk approved of this as he scored two tough baskets to get them up 92-88. Then another twist of events as the Grizzlies lost there second PG due to injury in a injury plagued game although the 1st one wasn’t serious the second one definitely was and Jackson was helped if with what looked a serious injury. This took the sting from Memphis and put the sting in a loud Detroit crowd who helped them take a 98-90 lead. But the pistons where determined to show they still had a hunger as they went up big. Although the Grizzlies had one last crack at the win and with 34 second trailed by just 4 with possession. Then they where able to muster a ball inside to Pau for the lay-up, this then led to a steal to set up a tough lay-up for a half injured Stoudemire who sent it into OT with scores tied at 101-101.
Overtime The overtime period began according to plan for Detroit as they made four gallant defensive stops and got out to a early 109-101 lead after 1 minute of time had been played. The hunger was burning in Detroit and the crowd where making them know that this game had to be won. But Memphis weren’t going to go down without a fight and they began to close in on the margin as they got within 5 after 3 minutes of play. This was then quickly cut to 4 after Shaquille O’Neal put won back followed by a Mike Miller 3. The Grizzlies then began to impose a serious threat on the pistons when they drew within two minutes with under a minute to play. The Grizzlies then forced a turnover and had 19 second to produce a triple overtime or get the win but it was Stromile Swift falling narrowly short to leave them trailing by two points when it was all said and done. The final score ended up with the pistons up 115-113.

surprise of the game
The surprise of the game wasn’t an individual one although it was a team one for the Grizzlies as they put constant pressure on Detroit and where the first team to challenge Detroit with a full strength side which includes 4 previous All Stars and one which will definitely be there about in years to come.
