Lakers (19-11 before game) vs. Knicks (12-16 before game)
LAKERS GET BALANCED BUT LACK OF EFFORT GIVES THEM LOSS

Kobe Bryant became human again, scoring 23 points, down from his average of 40.0, and tried to get his teammates involved after his frustration against Detroit. However, they couldn't get the usual out of some players like Chris Mihm, who scored 6, and Robert Horry, who scored 2, and Lamar Odom, who scored only 8. As a result, the New York Knicks got better performances from their players to give LA a 96-89 loss.

Missed free throws also contributed to LA's loss, as the team hit only 10-of-18. Every Lakers player scored.

"It was a good effort, but we need to see more from the others," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "However, we really need to work on our defense."

LA was down mostly the entire game, due to their lack of defensive intensity. They allowed Nate Robison to go up for 3 dunks and also allowed Stephon Marbury to drive at will.

This loss snaps the Lakers' 6-game winning streak

I just love the alternate uniform! I just have to have a Live Card with your next Team MVP wearing one of these!

In the last two years I've noticed that Kwame Brown seems to be a Team MVP...and it's so sad that he can't producte this in Real-Life play...shame shame...

I know you're far away from the 45th game and the next submission for pstats... ...I'm just glad that 'our' Lakers are being represented on the Dynasty Thread. Keep up the great work!

...NOT THIS TIME
Allen scores 44 as Sonics outlast Lakers

The Lakers fought back against the Sonics, tied the game at 91-91, and found themselves down by three points with 11.0 seconds left. Phil Jackson called for time, and set up a play for Robert Horry. Coming out of the timeout, Kobe Bryant drove baseline and kicked it out to Horry, who was wide open at the top of the key. But Horry, who has been struggling the past few games, couldn't hit the tying shot as the Seattle Sonics hand the Lakers a 99-94 defeat.

Kobe Bryant had 35 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for LA, which trailed 82-65 going in to the final quarter. Jarvis Hayes had 13 points off the bench and Lamar Odom had 11 while Chris Mihm and Chucky Atkins each scored 10. Kwame Brown was held to only 9 points but pulled down 12 rebounds.

The Laker defense had no answer for Ray Allen, who scored 44 points, 27 of them coming in the first half. Rashard Lewis had 27 points and 7 rebounds.

The Sonics pounded the Lakers in the middle quarters, outscoring them 62-47. LA simply couldn't find a way to get their offense structured and their defense was weak. They are now on a 2-game losing skid and will head back home to face the Indiana Pacers.

NOTES: Phil Jackson has been upset at the team whenever Kobe Bryant passes the ball. "They never execute properly." ... The Lakers wore their alternate black uniforms for the 2nd straight game. They are 0-2 when wearing them. The team has announced they will only wear their black uniforms when they are playing on the road against Pacific Division opponents.

KOBE AGAIN GETS LITTLE HELP
Kobe scores 28, grabs 4, dishes out 7

Kobe Bryant once again had no help. Chris Mihm was the only other player in double figures with 12 points. Then, no one else scored 10. Kwame Brown had 9 points and 8 rebounds at halftime, then had 0 points and 2 rebounds the rest of the way.

The Los Angeles Lakers fell behind early and never threatened after that as they lose big time at home, 102-83.

Bryant led the Lakers with 25 points, but shot only 10-of-25 from the field, and shooting 4-of-12 from three point range. Mihm's double double of 12 points and 10 rebounds were the only significant number put up. Brown's 9 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks are impressive, but the way they were accomplished wasn't. Lamar Odom's ineffectiveness is also growing, as he scored only 7 points, the 4th straight game where he hasn't reached his season average of 14 points.

The Pacers, on the other hand, had a very balanced effort, with Jermaine O'Neal leading the way with 24 points and 14 rebounds. However, Jonathan Bender gave him help with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Stephen Jackson scored 16 points, Fred Jones scored 16 and Jamaal Tinsley scored 18 points.

The Lakers started the game down 12-4. It then grew to 20-8 but the Lakers were able to cut it down to 26-19. AFter that, it was smooth sailing for Indiana the whole way.

NOTES: This is the 1st time in 2 games that the Los Angeles Lakers didn't wear their new alternate black uniforms...Ron Artest had only 4 points due to foul trouble...Everyone played for the Lakers, but Von Wafer is the only player who didn't score for the team...Lamar Odom has been given until the end of the week to improve. If not, GM Mitch Kupchack will look to others...This is the 3rd straight opponent the Lakers have lost to with a record under .500.

BEHIND THE SCENES
THE LAMAR ODOM ISSUE
By: Isaiah Pavia-Cruz

At the site of the Lakers practice at the Rose Garden in Portland in preparation for their game against the Trailblazers, Phil Jackson set up a play wherein the ball would be passed into Kobe Bryant in the post, then, if the double team comes, Odom would cut on the weak side for Bryant to give the ball to him for the easy two. As the play was being set up with Lakers guard Chucky Atkins as the supposed initiator, Odom was the one bringing down the ball.

As Phil Jackson stopped the play, he asked Odom why he was bringing the ball down. Apparently, Odom couldn’t recall Jackson saying that Atkins was to be the one bringing down the ball. The two had a heated discussion, until Jackson repeated the instructions. Then, Odom’s cut was late as the double team had already collapsed on Bryant. This made Jackson really frustrated as he just told the team to work on their conditioning.

Image
WILL ODOM CONTINUE TO NOT FACE PHIL JACKSON?

“He didn’t listen at all,” Jackson said. “I clarified matters with him, and he said he completely understood. However he didn't show any sign of understanding.”

Odom has been out of the Lakers’ offensive flow the last few games. Over the last 5 games, he has had averages of 8.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, committing 3.8 fouls, shooting 38.8% from the field, 15.4% from the arc and 44.4% from the line.

Image
ODOM HAS SETTLED FOR TOUGH SHOTS

In recent games, he has been settling for jump shots, and he seems too lazy, for lack of a better word, to drive ro the hoop. Whenever Kobe’s on the bench and the offense has to run through Odom, he has been deferring to his other teammates, and instead of setting up the offense, he makes a quick pass and stands around behind the three point line.

Image
HE HASN'T MADE USE OF HIS DRIVING SKILL

Earlier today, when the issue of player movement to create better floor spacing was discussed, Odom could be seen not looking around and not paying attention. Phil Jackson has said that Odom’s time as a starter could be numbered.

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak has also realized what Odom has been doing recently and he is starting to look to other teams before the trade deadline.

The Jeff McInnis issue has died down, and the last thing the Lakers need is another feud.

The Lakers play the Blazers next, and we will see how the story continues.

LAKERS PRE-GAME NOTES

Odom has recently been on a slump with his game and has been disgruntled at the way Phil Jackson has been coaching this team and setting up plays for him on the offense. However, whenever a play is set for Odom, he doesn't deliver. He would drive a bit, then settle for the jump shot which most of the time is contested.

"He is not doing a good job," Odom blatantly said. "I'm being left out of the offense."

Phil Jackson hasn't said anything about Odom's comment. He just wants to see Odom shoot a bit more, and make a bit more shots in their game against Portland, the last of the month of January.

Realizing Odom's attitude might disrupt the team, Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak has reported that he has contacted the Milwaukee Bucks' General Manager Larry Harris about a possible deal that would send Lamar Odom there.

"I feel that this move would do more good than keeping him here," Kupchak said. "With Odom's comments and attitude on the court, it seems like he wants out. That's why te front office is starting to take action."

TURNOVERS, TELFAIR, CONTRIBUTE TO LAKERS BLOWOUT
Telfair scores 30; Bryant and Odom combine for 32

Sebastian Telfair scored 30 points, Martell Webser scored 17 and Zach Randolph scored 17 and pulled down 13 to give the Los Angeles Lakers a humbling 99-82 defeat at the Rose Garden. Juan Dixon scored 10 points, including 2 layups in the final moments to seal the game for Portland.

Kobe Bryant scored 20 points on a horrendous 6-of-24 shooting, pulled down 4 rebounds and dished out 7 assists in the loss. Kwame Brown had 18 points, 19 rebounds and 4 blocks, shooting 9-of-13 from the field. Lamar Odom, a player who has been dissapointing Lakers management as well as Lakers coach Phil Jackson, had a sub-par game, scoring 12 points while shooting 5-of-12 from the field. He also had 7 rebounds.

The Lakers started out great, racing to a 10-2 lead. However, the Trailblazer defense started to close out Kobe Bryant, so he had to give the ball up and makes his teammates work. Odom consistently kept turning the ball over along with Bryant, and that resulted to the Lakers trailing by 1 at the end of the 1st.

Bryant started the 2nd quarter on the bench, but as the reserves played, there was no offensive production. Jarvis Hayes struggled, as did Von Wafer and Luke Walton. Portland blew the game open in the 2nd quarter and the Lakers only got as close as 8. But Juan Dixon's 2 layups spelled doom for the purple and gold.

The Lakers are now at 19-15, losing 4 straight games. All those 4 games were against teams with a record under .500. They now drop from 5th in the West to 8th, just above the Los Angeles Clippers (17-17).

NOTES: Trade talks are now escalating between the Bucks and the Lakers...The Lakers are now 0-3 when wearing the black alternate uniform. They only wear it on the road against Western Conference opponents.

LAMAR ODOM TRADED TO BUCKS

It was announced by both Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak and Bucks GM Larry Harris that Lamar Odom has been traded for Milwaukee Bucks guard Michael Redd.

Odom, who has been dissappointing as of late, leaves the Lakers averagine 14.1 points while Redd leaves Milwaukee as their leading scorer aveaging 21.0.

"It feels great to be here," Redd said during the press conference at the Lakers practice. "It feels wonderful to be part of this wonderful franchise, being able to help them reach the playoffs once again."

Image
REDD CAN TAKE SOME OF THE SCORING LOAD AWAY FROM KOBE BRYANT

"We feel he is going to be able to take away some of the shots that Kobe takes," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "He can help with the scoring load."

Odom has been struggling with the Lakers, then started blaming Phil Jackson for his lack of scoring opportunities. It has been noticed that Odom, has been not active during games and seems lazy to move around in the offense.

ODOM LEAVES THE LAKERS AFTER HAVING DISPUTES WITH PHIL JACKSON

Michael Redd, can shoot the ball very well, and can instantly be the leader of the offense.

Redd's Lakers debut will be tomorrow night when the Lakers host the Denver Nuggets.
