Thanks for your support. It might just go down to game 7. Sacramento is now one win away from reaching the conference semis leading the series 3-2. When I played Portland they were a decent team.

Mon Aug 15, 2005 5:53 pm

Good luck. Gonna be a tight one.

Mon Aug 15, 2005 10:35 pm

Good luck....i told you its going to game 7....can't wait for the recap

sounds like this would've been a cakewalk with martin not hurt. i say nugs in six...you get the next two, man...

yeah, i don't think there's any way to get boxscores for playoff games. ea definitely screwed up on that.

Hard to say really. I played Memphis during regular season and the game went to OT with easier settings. In game one I had Kenyon and he got Gasol into foul trouble, that's why I won and the same almost happened in game four.

NUGGETS MAKE GREAT FOURTH QUARTER EFFORT TO WIN

Memphis 68
Denver 82
Denver leads series 3-2

Denver Nuggets took a step towards the conference semi-finals last night by beating the Memphis Grizzlies in a game played at the Pepsi Center in Denver. After a heartbreaking loss in game four, the Nuggets didn't have the momentum going for them and were always a couple of points behind in the game, until the fourth quarter, that is. It was perhaps to make up for their dismal final minutes in game four that the Nuggets came out determined to win the game. They played the ball to two of the top players in the game, Nene and Carmelo Anthony, and the pair finished the game off to make it a comfortable win in the end. It wasn't an easy game, with especially Pau Gasol shooting well during the first half. However, the Grizzlies got little contribution from other players, with Bonzi Wells being the only bench player to score points. Once Gasol was shut down in the fourth with an effective double team, the Grizzlies were lost against the determined Nuggets team. Anthony and Nene shone most for Denver, with Anthony scoring 33 and adding seven rebounds, while Nene had a very solid 16 and 14 to make it one of his best performances of the season.

"It's great to see how much determination this team has", said forward Kenyon Martin, who is still suffering from an injury. "I hope I will still get to play this season, and I definitely believe that I will have the chance to do so." Martin is recovering slowly and will not play in the series.

KINGS, SUNS MAKE IT TO CONFERENCE SEMIS

Two more teams have advanced to the semi-finals of the Western Conference. Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns will face each other after Sacramento beat Portland four games to two and Phoenix beat Golden State by the same numbers.

In the East, Detroit and Washington both moved on to the conference semis with 4-1 wins in their series against Orlando and New York respectively. Second-place Philadelphia are currently losing by two games to three against the Boston Celtics team of Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker.

SPOTLIGHT IS NOW ON ANTHONY
by Mike Nugget, Denver Post Sports Writer

Denver Nuggets fans were devastated after hearing the news after game one of their first-round playoff series against Memphis: Kenyon Martin's injury would keep the All-Star out for the series. Having been the Nuggets' main scoring threat all season long, the Nuggets would now need the points from another player. For Carmelo Anthony, this was his opportunity to step up.

"I knew then and there that this was another chance to prove myself", he says. "People had been making comments about my scoring and how I wasn't doing enough of it during regular season."

"We play as a team and we have many scoring threats in the team", he continues. "But during regular season Kenyon was unstoppable, so it was his scoring that lead us. I don't need 20 points to be satisfied. We had a good season and that's what matters."

Image

Anthony is definitely a team player who can contribute in other ways than just scoring. He is without doubt the most versatile player on the team, adding his rebounds, assists, steals and defence. He is also the most dangerous open court player for the Nuggets. However, behind all this there's a confident basketball player who is loving his time as the team's go-to guy once again.

"We all want Kenyon back as quickly as possible, but it's the challenges that motivate me and this is just another challenge. The team needs me more than ever and for the moment I'm enjoying it. Then again if we want to far in the playoffs we really, really need Kenyon back. Nene did a good job in game five but you can't underestimate Kenyon's value to us. But if we want to keep playing we must win the next game to advance."

Anthony likes to score by making his typical strong drives to the basket. He scores almost all of his points off aggressive drives and he's not scared of contact on the play, which gets him his share of free throws. Anthony's athletic ability allows him to make the most difficult of adjusted shot attempts. Which part of his game does he still have to improve?

"I'm best at going hard to the basket", he says. "I need to keep doing that but I will also work on my shooting during the summer. You can't rely on just one thing in the NBA."

Image

So far in the playoffs Anthony has very much done that, however. In game five against Memphis he was nothing short of unstoppable, throwing the ball down from all angles and directions. Earlier in the season he featured in the slam-dunk contest, but the award went to fellow Nugget Kenyon Martin.

"I taught him some of that stuff", laughs Anthony. "No, honestly I think we both helped each other to prepare but Kenyon pulled everything off better. I had quite a disappointing contest but I'm glad the award went to a Denver player at the Denver All-Star game. I hope I'll be participating next year."

DENVER ADVANCE WITH MIRACULOUS WIN

Denver 87
Memphis 86
Denver win series 4-2

Denver Nuggets advanced to the conference semi-finals with a dramatic win over Memphis Grizzlies. It didn't look good for Denver with Carmelo Anthony hurting himself in the first quarter and Nene picking up an injury in the third. Anthony returned to the game, but this time it turned out to be Joe Johnson who decided the game for the Nuggets. They were losing by four with less than 10 seconds on the clock when Johnson gave Denver a glimmer of hope by draining an outside shot. More was to come, when Andre Miller missed the second of his two foul shots with six seconds left. Eduardo Najera, who had played a bad game, picked up the rebound and threw it up court to Jason Williams. Williams gave it to Johnson, who hit an amazing shot from well outside the arc with Mike Miller in his face. It was right at the buzzer, and after the referees' review it became clear Nuggets had advanced to the next round.

"This is definitely the best moment of my career", said the extatic Johnson. "It was a tough shot. I must admit I still don't believe it went in."

"We look for him [Johnson] when we have a tough shot to make", said Marcus Camby. "He is our best outside shooter and a great offensive option to have on your team."

The Nuggets' win did not come without a price. They will probably be well short of power forwards for the conference semi-finals against Los Angeles Lakers because of Nene's injury. Star player Kenyon Martin is also still some way from recovery.

Nuggets lose another power forward
by Mike Nugget, Denver Post Sports Writer

Denver's Brazilian power forward Nene will be out of action for approximately 13 days after his finger injury in game six of the Western Conference quarter-finals against Memphis. The injury leaves the Nuggets well short of quality power forwards, with star Kenyon Martin still recovering from a bone spur. The Nuggets will face the LA Lakers next and they will probably be forced to play Eduardo Najera, who has not impressed so far in the playoffs.

The good news for the Nuggets is that small forward Carmelo Anthony is fit and ready to play.

Indiana, Boston advance

Indiana Pacers and Boston Celtics are the final teams to advance to the next round of playoffs. Indiana beat Miami by four wins to two, whereas Boston knocked out second-place Philadelphia with the same figures.

HonorGlow, NICE! Expect the stats to change a bit in the future with tougher settings. I think Anthony will perform better, as he has done.
