SPOTLIGHT IS NOW ON ANTHONY
by Mike Nugget, Denver Post Sports Writer
Denver Nuggets fans were devastated after hearing the news after game one of their first-round playoff series against Memphis: Kenyon Martin's injury would keep the All-Star out for the series. Having been the Nuggets' main scoring threat all season long, the Nuggets would now need the points from another player. For Carmelo Anthony, this was his opportunity to step up.
"I knew then and there that this was another chance to prove myself", he says. "People had been making comments about my scoring and how I wasn't doing enough of it during regular season."
"We play as a team and we have many scoring threats in the team", he continues. "But during regular season Kenyon was unstoppable, so it was his scoring that lead us. I don't need 20 points to be satisfied. We had a good season and that's what matters."
Anthony is definitely a team player who can contribute in other ways than just scoring. He is without doubt the most versatile player on the team, adding his rebounds, assists, steals and defence. He is also the most dangerous open court player for the Nuggets. However, behind all this there's a confident basketball player who is loving his time as the team's go-to guy once again.
"We all want Kenyon back as quickly as possible, but it's the challenges that motivate me and this is just another challenge. The team needs me more than ever and for the moment I'm enjoying it. Then again if we want to far in the playoffs we really, really need Kenyon back. Nene did a good job in game five but you can't underestimate Kenyon's value to us. But if we want to keep playing we must win the next game to advance."
Anthony likes to score by making his typical strong drives to the basket. He scores almost all of his points off aggressive drives and he's not scared of contact on the play, which gets him his share of free throws. Anthony's athletic ability allows him to make the most difficult of adjusted shot attempts. Which part of his game does he still have to improve?
"I'm best at going hard to the basket", he says. "I need to keep doing that but I will also work on my shooting during the summer. You can't rely on just one thing in the NBA."
So far in the playoffs Anthony has very much done that, however. In game five against Memphis he was nothing short of unstoppable, throwing the ball down from all angles and directions. Earlier in the season he featured in the slam-dunk contest, but the award went to fellow Nugget Kenyon Martin.
"I taught him some of that stuff", laughs Anthony. "No, honestly I think we both helped each other to prepare but Kenyon pulled everything off better. I had quite a disappointing contest but I'm glad the award went to a Denver player at the Denver All-Star game. I hope I'll be participating next year."
