The playoffs can be more unpredictable than the regular season
-----------------

The 2005 NBA Playoffs are here and if you thought the regular season had surprises, "you ain't seen nothin' yet", as some like to say.

Intensity is higher. Emotions are testier. Nerves are frayed a little bit more. The ball bounces funnier.

This leads to some interesting and unpredictable games, which in turn can lead to some unpredictable series.

Of course, people like to predict anyway. When will Paris Hilton get married? Will Rafael Palmeiro make it to the Hall of Fame? Will I ever go bald? You know, important predictions.

Since predictions are our business (that's our claim and we're sticking to it), I thought I'd throw a few more out there. I rounded up SAC-1 (the GM for the Sacramento Kings), cwebbiverson (the GM for the Philadelphia 76ers), and Colicky Boy (the rookie for the Chicago Bulls) and we asked them to do their best Carnac act and foretell the future of the first round of the 2005 NBA Playoffs. And no, I did not ask them to predict if I will go bald.

Here's what they had to say. May the best swami win.

Stoudemire muscles his way for two

It was a tale of two halves.

The first half for the Bulls was reminiscent of their blowout loss against Indiana in the season finale and their lethargic win against the Magic in Game 1 of this opening round of the playoffs.

But the Bulls kicked it up a notch in the second half to steamroll the Magic 96-70 at the United Center. The Bulls now lead the series 2-0 as they travel to Orlando for the next two games.

"We got into a good flow in the second half," said Bulls head coach Scott Skiles. "We got good spacing, made our shots and got out on the break a couple times."

It didn't look so promising early on. Magic rookie forward Dwight Howard suffered an arm injury with 3:29 to go in the first quarter but the Bulls only led 21-15 after one. Howard returned to action with 7:06 to play in the second quarter and the Bulls still clung to their 6-point lead going into halftime.

Did Skiles say anything to the team in the locker room during halftime?

"Nothing that can be repeated here," laughed LeBron James, who had 19 points and a game-high 7 rebounds. "It actually wasn't a lot of yelling. More emphasizing what we were doing wrong."

Whatever was said must have worked.

The Bulls raced to a 17-point lead by the end of three before ending the game with the final 26-point margin. Amare Stoudemire, who finished with 28 points, had 16 points in the fourth quarter. Colicky Boy added 17 points while Dirk Nowitzki had 10 points.

"We wanted the home fans to enjoy the game," said Stoudemire. "We weren't playing so well early and they deserved to see better basketball."

Howard led Orlando with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Steve Francis, who scored 38 in Game 1, was held to 10 points tonight. Grant Hill also had 10 points for the Magic.

"They scored more in this game than in Game 1, but we scored the same as in Game 1," lamented Francis of his team's 70 points. "We have to score more, man. We'll only beat high school teams with 70 points."

After the game, the Bulls received word that tests on guard Dwyane Wade's wrist showed he would be cleared to play for Game 3 but not be at full-strength.

"We'll limit his minutes," said Skiles. "With a 2-0 lead, we can afford to do that."

You killed them....great job....i think you are going to sweep them even though i thought they would win atleast one game

Thu Aug 18, 2005 6:23 am

yeah, orlando's not putting up much resistance...so far...

Back to reality. No way Orlando will be back. You better start looking at who's up next.

Dallas has surprisingly lost both home games to Memphis. Could Tyson Chandler, Michael Finley & Co go home early? Meanwhile, Houston stole home-court advantage with a Game 2 victory at Denver.

Kirk Hinrich and Luol Deng are faring better than Ben Gordon and Andres Nocioni as Cleveland shocked the Heat by sweeping both games in Miami. In another surprise, Indiana put a 20-point whooping on the defending champion Pistons at Detroit.

Unfortunately, it is looking that way. I was hoping for more of a fight.

I've been away for a while, you're doing a nice job in the Play-Offs, Keep it up.

Fri Aug 19, 2005 3:09 am

keep it up, with the Bulls. For me in the playoffs Andres Nocioni has stepped up
not Ben Gordon.

Yes KIngs lead series 2-0...i was hoping Timberwolves would put up more of a challenge

Player awards:

Bulls guard Colicky Boy won the Rookie of the Year award and the league MVP award, becoming the first player since Wes Unseld in 1968-69 to win both in the same season.

"I'm not sure what to say," Colicky Boy said. "It's definitely not because of talent. A lot of it is just hard work and focus."

Colicky Boy also picked up the Defensive Player of the Year award for averaging 9.3 rebounds a game and a record-setting 8.5 steals per game.

"That was a complete shock," said Colicky Boy. "I didn't feel like I played great defense."

In another surprise, fellow Bulls guard Dwyane Wade won the Most Improved Player award, beating out candidates like Bobby Simmons and Chris Webber. Wade averaged 23.2 ppg (16.2 last year), .585 FG% (.465 last year) and 9.3 apg (4.5 last year).

Image

"All those stats went up when I joined the Bulls," said Wade. "If I was still in Miami, I'd only have marginal improvement from last year. You could see that even in the first half of the year when I was still with the Heat. But this system and these teammates make it easy for me to step up my game."

Indiana's Stephen Jackson won the Sixth Man award with 10.2 ppg.

ORLANDO - With a change of scenery, the Magic hoped some home cooking would help their fortunes.

The Magic played admirably but ultimately fell 95-84 at TD Waterhouse Center, giving the Bulls a commanding 3-0 lead in the series. Game 4 will be played Sunday.

Amare Stoudemire carried the Bulls with a game-high 33 points. Colicky Boy only had 14, LeBron James only 10 and Dirk Nowitzki only 6. Dwyane Wade, still bothered by a sore wrist, returned to action for the first time in three weeks and scored 11. The Bulls bench contributed 21 points.

"Our bench got some action and they played well," said Bulls head coach Scott Skiles. "I think everyone on our team scored."

The Bulls only led by 3 after one, and only by 4 at the half. But the Bulls pushed the lead to 11 after three and that's how the lead finished.

"We expected Amare to dominate," said James. "The Magic don't have an answer for him."

Doug Christie led the Magic with 19 points. Grant Hill added 18 but only 1 rebound and 1 assist. Steve Francis was held for a second consecutive game at 10 points after pouring in 38 in Game 1.

"We're doing a better job defending Francis," said Nowitzki. "We're putting a hand in his face a lot more."

But even the Magic sense the end of the line is near.

"Down 3-0 to the #1 seed," said Magic rookie forward Dwight Howard, who scored 12 with 7 boards. "means it's pretty much over."

Tough overtime loss for San Antonio on the road, but they still lead the series. Memphis takes a surprising 3-0 lead on favored Dallas. Minnesota wins a squeaker to finally beat Sacramento. And Denver wins at Houston to regain home-court advantage.

Eastern Conference:

Sorry, forgot to take the Bulls screenshot, but you already know that outcome anyway.

Defending champ Detroit ekes out a win at Indiana to go up 2-1. The road team has won all the games so far in the Cleveland-Miami series, with Shaq and Ben Gordon finally leading Miami past Cleveland. And the Sixers look to close out Gilbert Arenas and the Washington Wizards after seizing a 3-0 lead.

true, but even with an all-star team, it's tough with your sliders....they're the neutralizer!

Sat Aug 20, 2005 6:07 am

btw, since colicky boy is retiring after the season, i'm thinking of trading dirk in the offseason for kobe. should i?...or should i keep dirk since he's the rare big man who can shoot free throws?

Sat Aug 20, 2005 6:48 am

Keep Dirk and why is colicky boy retiring after just one season?

Sat Aug 20, 2005 12:11 pm
