EUROLEAGUE GAME 2

TAU CERAMICA ( SPAIN )OLYMPIAKOS ( HELLAS )

Image

Olympiakos and his bands of misfits from around the globe is taking a trip to the Basque region of Spain, to face up against one of the most talented and dominating teams in Europe the past 5 years, Tau Ceramica. Sporting NBA-caliber talent such as Luis Scola, Arvydas Macijauskas and Tiago Splitter, the Basques are one of the favorites to go all the way this season along with Maccabi Tel Aviv of Israel, CSSKA Moscow of Russia and Panathinaikos from Greece.

Despite the odds heavily favoring the home side, however it was the team that hails from the Greek port-city of Piraeus that took control of the game from the very start. With some good ball movement and excellent effort of containment on defense, the ‘Greeks’ went up early in the first quarter, 3-7 to begin with and 9-16 around the 6th minute. Anchoring the offense for the visitors were Desmond “Mafia” Jackson, who once more was cunning in getting open for the kickout pass and the inevitable uncontested jumper. Despite a poor effort by veteran Center Makis “D-Weaver” Hassakis, Luis Scola was contained to just 2 points by the end of the first 10 minutes of play. The score at the end of the first was 14 – 21.

Image
Sam Anurak took it upon himself to prove that last game’s poor showing was a mere fluke, and scored 9 points in the first quarter, including this thundering slam…

Tau was not willing to give up the fight so early in the game, however, and proceeded to score a 6-0 run to open the second quarter and make it an even contest again. Playmaking point guard Calderon was surprisingly trigger happy, but most off his reckless shots and drives went in, letting his steam back in it with a shout… Olympiakos was helped by the contributions of Will Sit and Patrick Kaas off the bench, on offense and defense respectively, and found themselves trailing by only one point about 4 minutes before the end of the half. And that is exactly when Desmond Jackson decided to go absolutely crazy from downtown and bury the poor Spaniards. Mafia closed out the half with 5 back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back three pointers, some after Hassakis’ kickouts, some fading away, and some in the very face of his marker. Scoring his team’s 15 final points, the in-the-zone Jackson helped Olympiakos take a 30 – 40 lead going into the halftime break.

Image
Rarely does a man score 5 straight 3 pointers in 3 and a half minutes time, but Mafia did it and carried Olympiakos on his back, giving his team a big halftime lead…

The Spaniards were dumbfounded by Mafia’s shellacking to close the first, and the halftime break did not seem to do them any good either, as they came back into the game veritably hypnotized and throwing bricks on offense for the first 5 minutes or so. The ‘Greeks’ did not miss the chance, and led by Andrew “The X” Watson's technically sound play around the basket on offense, and big man D-Weaver’s shotblocking presence on the other side of the court, stepped on the accelerator pedal and went on to increase the lead to the blowout vicinity. With Sam Anurak being the third option and Florian Ruf doing a masterful job on adjusting game tempo as well as pickpocketing the hell out Calderon, Olympiakos increased the deficit to an astounding 21 points, 47 – 68 to end the third quarter.

ImageImage

The X was brilliant on offense using a Hakeem-like variety of post moves, all the while pHLo was the consummate floor leader, leading in a huge third quarter lead…

It was pretty much over from a psychological standpoint at the beginning of the fourth, as the home side’s players seemed unmotivated and disinterested to force a late run… All the ‘Greeks’ had to do was maintain composure and move the ball on offense. That’s exactly what they did, with team captain D-Weaver showing his vast experience, virtually playing point-Center and calling the plays from the top of the key for the second-string squad his team had on the court. It all wound down quietly, and Olympiakos snatched their second straight road win, 72 – 91.

Image
37 years of age and 20 years of pro experience were enough for Hassakis to help ease his team to a victory over the disappointing home side…

Interview with Rising Star Desmond Jackson

Press: Desmond, how does it feel to have another big game?

Desmond: It feels great, I'm just glad the team got the win and I was happy to contribute when we needed the runs.

Press: The team is now 2-0, what's the key for a perfect start so far?

Desmond: Well, even though we are a new group of guys, we still feel like a family because we have been knowing each other for awhile now and we have no selfish players on the team.

Press: How do you explain your amazing shooting from the past two games. First game you shoot perfect from the field and the 2nd game, you shoot 6-11 from 3-point range?

Desmond: It's my speciality, I'm a 3-point specialist and my teammates give me the ball when I'm open and they know I can knock the shots down. My teammates basically open the shots up for me.

Press: When you closed out the half with five amazing back-to-back-toback-to-back-to-back 3-pointers, what happened in the locker room?

Desmond: The coach was just saying we need to keep doing what were doing. We can't let up on the team.

Press: Thanks for the time out for another interview Desmond and good luck next game.

Desmond: Thanks, anytime.

Ater the game ESPN Reporter Sara lawrance asked Patrick Kaas Why he thought Mafia Was so Crazy fro downtown.

Kaas answerd:
I think his secret weapon is to not brush his teeth and blow the smell in the face of the opponent before the shot  But to be honoust he's just good at 3's. and he's goes crazy more just watch what he does to the lockerroom when we lose a game

Q & A's With Anurak

Image

After the game, reporters caught up with Mr.Anurak.

Q. Sawatdee Khrap Khoon Anurak. Good game you had there. You really had a good game vs. Tau Ceramica.[/b]

A. Wat dee. Ye I had an alright game. I expected more from myself on offense. My defense was good tonight cause I let my oppostion only to 9 points. Enough about me right now, the story of today is about "DJAX".

Q. Ahh yes, Mr. Jackson had a great game for your team.[/b]

A. Yes he did. I couldn't believe those five back to back etc. three pointers. He was crazy tonight. As well as Flo's D. He had a game high 7 steals which was great. Don't forget about the Kiwi man Andrew Watson. He had a great game pitching in 17 points and our team captain with an all-round game.

Q. Yes great team effort today. Also i was hearing people calling you the Thai LeBron James. What do you gotta say about that ? With your high flying dunks and being a fan favorite.[/b]

A. It's an honour to be called Thai LeBron James but like how the media called Kobe Bryant the next MJ, he replied with, "I don't want to be the next Michael Jordan, I only want to be Kobe Bryant." Like him i'll say I only want to be Sam Anurak.

Q. I respect your answer Mr.Anurak and that about wraps it up.[/b]

A. ลาก่อน ( bye )

Fri Jul 22, 2005 9:18 am

My contribution will come soon!

Great game btw

Fri Jul 22, 2005 1:05 pm

ahh, I gotta be happy with the way I'm playing....I guess the calming influence of a vet like Makis is doing wonders for my game  who knows, the NBA dream might not be out of reach for Mr. Watson :P

nice win....the Greeks keep on rolling....huge win over such a talented team....

Fri Jul 22, 2005 3:57 pm

3 points, 1 block and 2 rebounds

I'm not supposed to be a good 3 point shooter, maybe a good 3 point fluker

Good Recap, GO!! MAFIA!!

Fri Jul 22, 2005 8:41 pm

After the game, Greek Press caught up with SG Will Sit…

Reporter: Good game tonight Will Sit. How do you feel you went in your debut?

Sit: 7 points is pretty good for the amount of time I had. Only played less than a half, I think I might get to start later this season. Right now, I’m not ready. Not because I couldn’t shoot, all my shots felt good, they just weren’t hitting.

Reporter: You like to compare yourself to Los Angeles’ Kobe Bryant. I can see that you say a lot of things like him.

Sit: That’s correct. I believe I have a game similar to him, actually, I’m as good as Kobe was at the same age. But all the words I say are from me, not Kobe.

Reporter: What do you think of the team so far?

Sit: It’s a good squad, great team mates. All the Asians talk Asian at training all the time, Coach Gezus tells them not to and I’m left out because I’m not Asian enough. Then there’s Watson and Mafia, those two blokes are good champs and then we have all the other randoms I haven’t caught up with. Mafia’s a great guy, good to see him play so well tonight.

Reporter: We heard you and Mr Weaver aren’t too friendly? Why is that?

Sit: Never liked him when I first laid eyes on him. He’s a bit of a bully, thinks he’s got what it takes to be the star! I don’t think I will pass to him much. Plus he got my number!

Reporter: (Nods at Weaver walking out of room) What is there not to like about him?

Sit: He’s arrogant and self righteous- doesn’t pass me the ball when I call for it.

Reporter: Some people have called you that, and you are often referred to as a ball hog.

Sit: (Face getting red) Look man, I know he’s a fellow countryman to you so I expect you to be aggressive. Just quit it before I snap. All of them are just haters like you, you have to respect my game, I work hard. I can do everything this team needs; Captain can go shove it up his backside if you ask me if I care.

Reporter: (In spite) You are truly arrogant Mr Sit, We in Greece can’t wait for you to be dropped.

Sit: It’s not happening mate. And watch me and Weaver go down to the wire. Call me arrogant and cocky if you wish, I will show everyone. I mean, I even have my own posse… see those guys with signs with my name on it?

Reporter: (Puzzled) Ah, they actually read ‘Sit is Sh*t.’ Will Sit, you are very very boastful and overconfident.

Sit: (Raises fist) Oh, I hate you mate. Get out of here before I count to 5. One, two, five!

(Sit rises up and grabs reporter by neck and punches him in stomach. He then throws reporter aside and rips camera form cameraman and throws it on floor, stomping on it before chasing cameraman and reporter out of room)
