Heat still in the right track

Heat Boxscore | Mavs Boxscore

DALLAS, Feb. 1 (Ticker) -- Dwyane Wade had 25 points, 5 rebounds, nine assists and one steal to lead the Miami Heat to a 119-114 win over the Dallas Mavericks.

Shaquille O'Neal added 23 and 15 rebounds.

"We didn't do a good job on both Dwyane and Shaquille, one-on-one, and that's a decision that beat us," Mavs coach Avery Johnson said.

The Heat missed eight straight shots during the last quarter.

"I'm sure they're frustrated because they lost," Wade said.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 18 points. He still hit a jumper and two free throws during a rally.

Udonis Haslem had 20 points and six rebounds.

The Mavs also play seven of their next eight on the road.

"This is a huge week for us," Nowitzki said.

Miami dominated the first half, but was outscored by nine while O'Neal was on the bench and the game was close into the third quarter. Dallas began to break away, then the Heat opened the fourth with a 9-0 run to tie it.

Heat needs OT to defeat Cavs

Cavaliers Boxscore | Heat Boxscore

MIAMI, Feb. 3 (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal had a season-high 43 points and added 16 rebounds to lead the Miami Heat over the Cleveland Cavaliers, in overtime, 143-136.

O'Neal was unstoppable, shooting 20-of-28 field goals.

"In the overtime, we didn't play the level of basketball we wanted to play," Cavs superstar LeBron James said. "Down the stretch, we just didn't make enough shots." James scored 34 for the Cavs, and 8 rebounds.

"Shaq was great, especially in the overtime," Dwyane Wade (22 points, 5 assists) said.

Eric Snow posted 22 points and added 13 assists, when center Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 19 and 17 rebounds.

Andre Iguodala eclipsed, with 24 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, Cavs' forward Sasha Pavlovic, who had 9 and was fouled out.

Cleveland will start a season-long five-game homestand, Saturday against Orlando. In the next three weeks they will play only 1 road game.

Courtside with Jason Jackson - Feb. 7, 2005

Jason Jackson is the host of NEXTEL Heat Tonight seen a half-hour prior to most Miami HEAT telecasts seen on Sun Sports. Try to stay alive in 2005
While the Bulls, the Heat’s last opponent, came into AmericanAirlines Arena as the NBA’s hottest team over the last month, the Warriors hold the moniker at the other end of the winning spectrum over the last 30 days.

Golden State started the New Year with a 8-9 record.

Image

How bad are things? First year head coach Mike Montgomery recently said it will take a perfect performance in every aspect of the game for his team to get a win right now.

A man without a home
Since he was 15 years old Mickael Pietrus (Michael PEE-trus) has been in search of home.

He is from the island of Guadaloupe in the French West Endies, but was off to France at 15 to play pro ball. And now he’s living out a dream in America playing in the NBA.

Pietrus, the player once called Euro-Jordan for his boarderline obsession with his Royal Airness, is one of 7 children raised by his grandmother after his mother’s death when he was 9.

Image

While soccer is Guadaloupe’s passion, there was a basketball court right down the street from his new home.

He said he grew up wanting to be just like Jordan, and that the images of MJ drove him to work on his game daily. While his offense has some developing to do before becoming Jordan-like, PEE-trus is known as a tireless defender.

To Dunk or Not To Dunk
Two-time Slam Dunk Champ Jason Richardson says he still hasn’t decided if he’s going to participate in the slam dunk contest during the NBA All-Star Weekend in just under two weeks.

Richardson said he has not been invited by the league, but said he “probably wouldn’t” participate noting that “It depends on who’s in it.”

There have been published reports that Richardson is among a short list of candidates the league is considering for the dunk contest, along with Heat rookie Dorell Wright, Dwyane Wade, Tayshaun Prince, Josh Howard, Tracy McGrady, LeBron James and Ray Allen. Only four will be invited.

Image

Defending champion Fred Jones of Indiana is not expected to defend this title because of a knee injury.

Richardson still has an outside shot at making the All-Star game as a reserve for the Western Conference All Stars. The reserves will be announced next week.

Heartbraking 4th breaks Miami

Warriors Boxscore | Heat Boxscore

MIAMI, Feb. 7 (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal scored 23 points and 17 rebounds for the Miami Heat but Jason Richardson posted 32 for the Golden State Warriors; Warriors won 105-104 in the last seconds of the game with a Derek Fisher's free throw.

Fisher, playing 30 minutes off the bench, scored 14.

"I think this was the worst game of my NBA career", Dwyane Wade said, who scored only 6 points.

"It was unbelieveable when I saw Dwyane's stats in the boxscore", Stan Van Gundy said. "I thought he had 14, 15 points. Not 6... unfortunately the greatest of players will have the worst of nights," added.

Eddie Jones had 18 points and center Alonzo Mourning added 16 and 8 rebounds.

Courtside with Jason Jackson - Feb. 9, 2005

NBA’s best two guard
Earlier this season, Stephon Marbury claimed he was the NBA’s best point guard, he has since noted that the proclamation was more about personal confidence than inflated ego.

Now he will be able to size himself up at another position.

Knicks head coach Herb Williams hopes flipping Marbury to the shooting guard position at times and Jamal Crawford to his natural point guard spot might be the experiment that leads to more success for the Knicks.

Image

While Marbury can score from anywhere on the floor, Crawford has struggled at times on the wings or in the corner when he has to force a shot. Williams feels the Knicks are better served when Crawford has the ball in his hands and creates for his teammates.

But make no mistake about it; Marbury is still the Knicks primary point guard.

Herb, Don't Hurt Them
With big coaching names swirling around his job every day, Herb Williams has seemingly put his head down to focus on basketball.

He doesn’t concern himself with speculation, but he is concerned about the losing and the team’s effort.

Image

Last week he ran the team through some tough practices and some the player’s faces revealed a lack of enjoyment.

Williams’ response: "They're not supposed to look happy after practice. You're not supposed to be happy after losses, either. If you care about what you do, if you take pride in it, you're not going to be happy after you lose."

So Long Lenny
Lenny Wilkens is apparently not taking the Knicks assistant GM job that Isiah Thomas offered him when the former coach resigned on Jan. 22.

Wilkens will be the new in-studio analyst for Sonics games on Fox Sports Net in Seattle, where he now lives.

Image

Of course the Hall of Fame player and coach was a player and a coach for the Sonics winning the NBA title in Seattle in 1979.

Timing is everything
Tonight’s game comes after the Knicks' 10-day road trip and the win in Utah that caused a 5 a.m. landing for New York yesterday.

The Knicks see it as horrible timing.

Image

Nazr Mohammed, involved in trade talks, said, "It's kind of disappointing, you have such a long road trip and on the travel day, you prepare for your next team and it's Miami. We're disappointed about that. But it's the NBA. We need to stop the bleeding so we can't worry about the schedule."

Eddie with 29

Warriors Boxscore | Heat Boxscore

NEW YORK, Feb. 9 (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones was being dared to drive to his left, so that's exactly what he did -- with flair.

Jones dribbled the ball between his legs four times before darting around Jamal Crawford and making a thunderous dunk, easily the prettiest play of the game, in the Miami Heat's 125-122 victory over the New York Knicks on Wednesday night.

"I think I scored on that play."

Indeed he did, giving the Heat a 88-84 lead in the third quarter, that the Knicks never recovered from.

Jones finished with 29 points, five assists and four rebounds. Dwyane Wade added 17 points and Andre Iguodala had 18 points and 10 rebounds as Miami recovered from a heart-breaking loss against Golden State.

Crawford led a last-quarter comeback and scored 32 points for the Knicks.

New York had a bad possession in the final seconds and never led in the fourth.

Crawford said: "There's no explanation for it. You have to do it."

Miami made only 4-of-14 3-pointers (.286) but made 44-of-88 field goals (.500).

"Our practice helped us a lot," Stan Van Gundy said about the efficiency in the shots.

Miami improved the Eastern Conference's best record to 40-11.

"We're a little bit ahead of schedule," O'Neal said. "I don't know if we're going to be a prime contender or not."

"I'm definitely disappointed with our record, but I'm not disappointed with our effort or with the fight in our guys." Herb Williams said. "There was a competitive spirit that I was very pleasantly surprised to see."

Winning Really Isn’t Everything
Former Heat star Steve Smith was at the center of trade talks between the Bobcats and the Nets recently, and team GM and head coach Bernie Bickerstaff came to the 14 year vet to see what he wanted.

Smith wanted to stay put. Sure, there’s no fun in losing, but he enjoys mentoring young players and he’s close to his family in Atlanta.

Image

While Smith hasn’t totally ruled out a move before the trade deadline on the 24th, he says the Nets situation didn’t feel right and he has to go with his gut.

He was flattered that a team would still be interested in his services, but the truth is the man can still play. He fill-in at all but the center spot for the Bobcats and is shooting over 44% from the beyond the 3 point line. Rumors said that Miami wants their former draft pick back in home.

Big Jason
Charlotte guard Jason Kapono started this season with illness, injury and frustration. Not the best set of issues to bring to an expansion team, but the last month have given him hope.

Over the last 10 games of the stretch, Kapono averaged 17.0 points and 6.0 rebounds.

Image

Kapono appreciates the confidence in his skills saying this about his head coach: "I'm not a suck-up, but he's stuck by me through a lot. He told me I was his best 3-point shooter when the ball wasn't always going in. He believed."

Another 'Meka Fan
Coach Stan Van Gundy is one of Emeka Okafor's many NBA admirers.

Van Gundy (who would be East All Star head coach), revealed that he voted for Okafor to make the All-Star team. NBA officials said Okafor didn't make the team, but it's obvious that he will play for the rookie team in the Got Milk? Rookie Challenge.

Image

Coach Van Gundy said he expected Okafor to be a defender and a rebounder, but did not expect the offensive skills that he’s seen - adding that he thinks the rookie out of the University of Connecticut will be a force for many years to come.

Teamwork Leads Miami to Win

Heat Boxscore | Heat Boxscore

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Feb. 12 (Ticker) -- Dwyane Wade had 22 points, six rebounds and five assists to lead the Miami Heat to a 110-104 over the Charlotte Bobcats.

Wade shot 7-of-13 in powering the Heat to their fifth win in 6 games.

"We should all be so lucky to have a weapon like Wade," Bobcats coach Bernie Bickerstaff said.

Shaquille O'Neal added 19 points and seventeen rebounds for the Heat, who return home to face the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday in a possible NBA Finals preview.

Jason Kapono led the Bobcats in scoring, with 21 points (shooting 4-of-5 outside shots). Karl Malone, signed after Charlotte's opening night, helped with 18 and five rebounds.

Emeka Okafor, at 6-10, started at center and scored only 7 points; he guarded O'Neal most of the night.

"He makes me look like I don't belong out there," Okafor admitted.

Miami was winning 74-63 after 3 quarters but in the middle of the fourth, Charlotte tied it at 80 (with a 17-6 run). Then the Heat stepped up and putted the score at 96-84. With O'Neal and Damon Jones in foul problems (both with 5), the Bobcats tied it again, at 100. But later Okafor was fouled out and O'Neal scored 8 of the Heat's last 10 points.

"A lot of teams come out with a lot of energy and play above their heads. (The Bobcats) did that in the first half," O'Neal said. "I never panic."

Jason Hart had 15 points and five assists off the bench.

The Heat topped 100 points in six straight games.

The two teams combined to make 45-of-60 free throws (.750).

4th Quarter Sprint Defeat Spurs

Spurs Boxscore | Heat Boxscore

MIAMI, Feb. 13 (Ticker) -- Dwyane Wade had 17 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, helping Miami beat San Antonio 118-108 -- the first time the Heat downed the Spurs since Feb. 1, 2002.

"It's a big win," said Wade, who added three assists and six rebounds. "We beat a great team that's playing well right now."

The game between conference leaders -- San Antonio's 40-12 record leads the NBA, and Miami's 42-11 mark has it seven games ahead of Cleveland (2nd) in the East -- was classic: back and forth, they went until the Heat stepped up in the final minutes.

"That is the best I have felt about our team in a long time," Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said. "Not just because we got a win against a great team, but the way we got it."

Tony Parker, who led San Antonio with 26 points, put the Spurs ahead 100-96 with 4:08 remaining on a layup. Alonzo Mourning (13 points) caught a long outlet from Wade, spun and found Eddie Jones for a 3-pointer (6-of-9 for Eddie) to put Miami up for good (111-106)with 2:15 left.

"Eddie's a great player and he was very aggressive tonight," said Spurs guard Bruce Bowen, who had 14 points. "He had some huge baskets down the stretch for his team."

Shaquille O'Neal, Udonis Haslem and Andre Iguodala all had 17 points each.

Tim Duncan had 19 of his 32 points after halftime for the Spurs, who got 7 rebounds from Bowen. The Spurs shot only 22.2 percent (4-for-18) from 3-point range and just 43.3 percent (42-for-97) from the field.

"They made a lot of big shots. We didn't," Manu Ginobili, who played off the bench, said. "That's why they won the game."

"We made too many mistakes down the stretch and didn't play smart the last three or four minutes," Parker added.

Heat Acquires Kareem Rush

Sun Jun 05, 2005 7:01 am

Heat Acquires Kareem Rush

MIAMI, Feb. 24 -- The Miami HEAT announced today that they have acquired guard Kareem Rush from the Charlotte Bobcats in exchange for forward/center Christian Laettner.

A 6'6'', 215-pound guard, Rush was originally drafted by the Toronto Raptors with the 20th pick in the 2002 NBA Draft, and got traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in draft night. He played for the Lakers for 3 ½ seasons before being traded to the Charlotte Bobcats, where he spent this ½ season. Rush averaged 3.4 points, 1.0 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 11.7 minutes in his 3 ½ seasons with the Lakers. This season, with the Bobcats, Kareem is averaging 7.2 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 48 games.

"We are very excited to welcome Kareem to Miami," said HEAT President Pat Riley. "In addition to him being a great shooter and his ability to play multiple positions, he also brings great character to our team. This move also enables us to gain more salary cap flexibility."

Image

Laettner signed with the HEAT as a free agent in September 15, 2004. He averaged 5.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 20.5 minutes per game in 48 games with Washington in the 2003-04 season. Over his career, he's averaging 12.8 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 29.7 minutes (868 career games).

"We’d also like to thank Christian for his contributions this season," Riley said. "He was a tireless worker with great character who gave 100 percent on and off the court. We wish him well in the future."

The Clippers Were On Fire
The Los Angeles Clippers are nearing the end of a tiring 9-game/20-day road trip tonight.

While they’ve only won one game thus far, the Clippers were on fire after game 4 of the trip – literally!

Image

After losing to the Celtics last Wednesday, the Clippers were grounded before taking off to face the Wizards thanks to a fire in their airplane’s kitchen area. An accident in the galley caused the jet to fill with smoke.

The plane was cleared over an hour later and the team arrived at their Washington, DC hotel at 4am. And as head coach Mike Dunleavy would later say, “That was the good news,", as the Clippers lost their game against the Wizards the next day.

Kittles Just Sits
The Clippers biggest off season acquisition has not been able to shake the injury bug. Be it a bad knee, bad back or a pulled groin but Kerry Kittles has played the Clippers' 51 games this season – his first with the LAC.

The latest and most prominent ailment is the back issue, which has caused him pain for two months now, but he's playing.

Image

The team and Kittles are currently focused on exploring alternative routes as nothing has seemed to sooth the pain to date.

Mr. Livingston I Presume
While the Clippers won on Monday in Toronto, they didn't play with their rookie point man Shaun Livingston.

Livingston has played only 28 games of his rookie season due to a dislocated right kneecap.

Image

Coach Dunleavy said he needs Livingston right now, but he didn’t force anything.

Livingston and Dunleavy will be the happiest guys with the return.

Nice trade, I always trade for Rush, he's a great player to have on the team.

Besides, I enjoy looking at your sig & avatar.

Hehe, nah, keep up the good work man, cut down on the ////'s and that's pretty much the only gripe I had while viewing your dynasty, good stuff. (Y)

Dang, I haven't posted in here for a while. That's a good trade you made for Rush. (Y) (Y)

You're still the reason why I didn't do a heat dynasty this year. Keep this SOB going.

Shaq's Heat Burns Clips

Clippers Boxscore | Heat Boxscore

MIAMI, Feb. 16 (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal had 22 points and 14 rebounds while Eddie Jones had 15, to help the Miami Heat beat the Los Angeles Clippers 98-87.

"I've been focused," O'Neal said. "I just want to keep it going," Jones added.

"When you are worried about Shaq and defending the post, he's going to be open," said the Clippers' Elton Brand -who only had 12 points- about Jones, who made 4-of-5 outside shots.

Corey Maggette had 26 points. Chris Kaman only had 2 points, but led the team in rebounds, with 13. Both Kaman and Chris Wilcox (9 points) got fouled-out.

"I was pretty happy with that one," said Heat coach Stan Van Gundy, who will likely coach the East All-Stars in Sunday All-Star Game.

Image
Udonis Haslem got injured and didn't return

Miami made 36-of-90 FGs (.400) and were winning 70-45 after 3 quarters. Alonzo Mourning had 12 points and 8 rebounds.

"He played fabulous tonight," O'Neal said. "He shot the ball well and if he continues shooting like that, we're going to be fabulous."

Miami led 49-29 at halftime, thanks to a 28-7 in the 4th quarter.

Clippers' guard Marko Jaric opened the second quarter with a three-point play, but the Heat scored the next 15 points, and the Clippers never got closer than ten points.

"The difference in the game was Shaquille," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Chris (Kaman) did a good job in the rebounds but not with O'Neal."
