I think any way you look at it the loss should make for more interesting playoffs.

Playoff preview: Bulls vs Magic![]()
Chad Ford
ESPN Insider
2004-05 history:
The Bulls swept the season series 3-0, although the last two games were played without injured Steve Francis.
Key injuries:
Magic - none. Francis is back from a bone spur in his ankle and ready to go.
Bulls - Dwyane Wade (broken wrist) is definitely out for Game 1 and possibly Games 2 and 3. But he is nearly recovered and may be back for the later part of this series.
Matchups:
Center
Orlando's Kelvin Cato is a rebounder and good for a shot block or two. The Bulls' Amare Stoudemire is more athletic, a decidedly better scorer and better in pretty much every aspect.
Advantage: BULLS
Power forward
Orlando's Dwight Howard is strong for his age and a good leaper. Physically, he matches up well with the Bulls' Dirk Nowitzki, giving up only an inch in height and about the same weight. But Howard's game is raw while Nowitzki is a polished veteran who can shoot from outside as well as play physical in the paint. In addition, if the two get fouled, only one player's free throws are money (Nowitzki shoots 91% from the line; Howard 67%).
Advantage: BULLS
Small forward
Grant Hill has made a remarkable comeback for Orlando from all his surgeries, making the All-Star team this season. However, he clearly has lost the quickness he once had. The Bulls' LeBron James is, of course, the superior scorer, but James has also vastly improved his passing since his trade to the Bulls, making him even better than Hill in assists. James is now an all-around athlete who can also block shots and steal the ball.
Advantage: BULLS
Shooting guard
Doug Christie is a gamer for the Magic. He'll make shots, pass the ball to open teammates and play some defense. Bulls head coach Scott Skiles plans to use a big man like Malik Allen at the shooting guard position to frustrate Christie with bigger wingspans, instead of using true shooting guard Lucious Harris. Christie should be quicker than whoever defends him but could have trouble getting a shot off against a taller forward.
Advantage: ORLANDO
Point guard
Orlando's Steve Francis is a shoot-first point guard so he's more like a shooting guard. He makes the offense go, and with Howard and Hill as options, he can light an offensive fire with his supporting cast. The Bulls' Colicky Boy has trouble defending quick guards. Rookie jitters possible?
Advantage: Even
Bench
Orlando has Jameer Nelson backing up Francis, Hedo Turkoglu, Pat Garrity and young DeShawn Stevenson. The Bulls have Bo Outlaw and a bunch of players no one else would want. The Bulls can survive a bad bench if the starters play more minutes, but then fatigue can affect the starters' performance.
Advantage: ORLANDO
Coaching
Johnny Davis has been criticized in Orlando for not adjusting well to opposing defenses, and that the Magic offense should be better. Scott Skiles, perhaps benefitting from star players, has had no worries on the Bulls offense except for the finale against Indiana. Although Skiles has never coached a team past the first round of the playoffs, it's hard to imagine this team in the playoffs not following Skiles' preaching of low turnovers, frequent passing and team defense.
Advantage: BULLS
Intangibles
It's fairly rare that a #8 seed beats a #1 seed. Don't see any reason that should change here either.
Advantage: BULLS
Predicted winner: Bulls in five.

Game 170
81
---------------------
Chicago hadn't seen playoff basketball in the past six years.
But seven years after a certain guy named Michael led the Bulls to their sixth title, the Bulls return to the postseason started off on the right foot as the Bulls beat Orlando 81-70 to take Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs.
Orlando tried to replicate Indiana's formula for success when the Pacers steamrolled the Bulls in the regular season finale.
"We wanted to only let one guy get his points and really shut down everyone else," said Magic forward Grant Hill. "And we did that."
Indeed, just like the Pacers game, Amare Stoudemire led the Bulls with 26 points but got little help from anyone else. And the Bulls' 81 points was close to the 76-point output the Bulls managed in their loss to Indiana.
Unlike Indiana, though, Orlando forgot to score. Steve Francis did his part, scoring a game-high 38 points that accounted for more than half of Orlando's points. But no one else stepped up to help.
"They did a good job containing us," said LeBron James, who had only 14 points. "But since we weren't scoring, we really focused on our defense. And that was the difference in the game."
The Bulls only led by 4 after the first quarter and at halftime, and only led by 5 after three quarters. But Orlando just couldn't get any closer.
"This was not an easy game by any stretch," said Colicky Boy, who had only 10 points but was one steal short of a quadruple-double. "But to win a playoff game is huge. The city was starved for basketball success."
While the Magic were at full-strength, the Bulls were without Dwyane Wade, still out with a broken wrist.
"We had to grind this out," said Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 14 points. "Maybe with Dwyane it gets easier, but then again, maybe not. He's not here anyway. And everything gets cranked up a notch or two in the playoffs. No one should be expecting any cakewalks."
