Two Heads are better than one
Avery Johnson came back to the Mavericks organization as a player in late September, but in an unprecedented move transitioned into the team’s number one assistance coach. Then again, when has Don Nelson ever followed precedent?
Johnson soon became the loudest voice at practice and now leads the team as the acting head coach as Nelson, also the Mavs GM, heals from a recent shoulder operation. The team is 25-17 this season, since Johnson took over the reigns. Not a bad start for team receiving a new message of defense and discipline rather than the offensive innovations they’ve grown familiar with from Nelson.
Owner
Mark Cuban and Nelson agree that Johnson will be the next head coach of the Mavericks after next season. Cuban said, “I've talked a lot to A.J. as things have progressed and tried to let him know the whole organization is confident in him and to do it his way. It's turned out well."
Jason Terry so very ... good
What a strange season it has been for Mavericks point guard
Jason Terry. In August, he was brought in from Atlanta via trade to fill the void left by
Steve Nash’s dash back to Phoenix, but soon enough Terry found himself on the bench behind rookie point guard
Devin Harris, and even deeper down the depth chart when the Mavs brought in
Darrell Armstrong.
Former point guard and current Mavs acting head coach
Avery Johnson says it was good old fashioned hard work. According to Johnson, Terry started watching more film, practicing harder, and asking questions – all the things you do to become the best player you can be at your position.
It seems to be working.
A Real Players Coach
After a terrible loss (80-104) to the Nuggets last week,
Avery Johnson didn’t run his team through a grueling practice, he took them to lunch.
The next day in preparation for a road game against the Clippers, Johnson loaded the team on the bus and took them all out for a steak lunch, but there was a catch.
The appetizer wasn’t a nice spinach dip in a lovely brown bread bowl, no, it was a film session.
The plan was golden as the Mavs went out and beat the Clippers by 26 the next night.
Maybe the best way to a player’s focus is through his stomach.
Put Marquis on the Marquee
It has been a long time, but it's beginning to look like the Mavericks might see the
Marquis Daniels on the floor before long.
Daniels hasn't been full strength because of a lingering left ankle problem that's never healed since he sprained it last summer.
Daniels went through part of practice Friday and had no setbacks Saturday, plus he practiced on Sunday as well.
He attributes the improvement to a new medicated patch he's wearing.
Coach Johnson said Daniels could play more minutes if he goes through a full practice or two with no mishaps.
