Game Preview ::: November 1, 2005

[ PHOENIX (Ticker) ] -- Two of the top offensive clubs from last season open their regular season when the Dallas Mavericks visit the Phoenix Suns in a rematch of a 2005 Western Conference semifinal series.

The Suns matched a franchise record with 62 wins last season, much of it on the strength of a high-powered attack that averaged 110.4 points. They were able to keep alive that style in the playoffs when they took out the Mavericks in six games.

Former Maverick Steve Nash shined in his first year in Phoenix, winning the league's MVP award and averaging 30.3 points in the series against Dallas.

Nash may have some added pressure when the season starts as the new-look Suns going to be without All-Star forward and leading scorer Amare Stoudemire until at least February following left knee surgery.

Also gone are guards Joe Johnson and Quentin Richardson, who combined for 32.0 points last season but were traded to Atlanta and New York, respectively. The only remaining starter other than Nash on a squad that heavily relied on its first five last season is Shawn Marion, a 19.4-point scorer and the league's third-ranked rebounder in 2004-05.

Despite falling short against Phoenix, Dallas has matched a franchise mark with five straight postseason appearances and should be in the mix again in the loaded Southwest Division, where the Mavericks finished second last season with a 58-24 record.

Leading the way was superstar forward Dirk Nowitzki, who established career highs with averages of 26.1 points, 3.1 assists, 1.5 blocks and a 39.9 shooting percent on 3-pointers.

Dallas was 16-2 in the regular season down the stretch last season after Avery Johnson took over for Don Nelson as coach. Johnson inherited a team that ranked third in the league in scoring (102.5), but preached a defensive mindset that began to take shape until the Suns changed things in the playoffs.

The Mavericks had won eight of 12 meetings in the regular season with the Suns until dropping two of three in last season's series.

After a one-year hiatus from the Lakers, Jackson returned to the squad he led to three NBA titles and marked it with a 90-89 win at Denver in his regular season opener Wednesday.

Kobe Bryant had 36 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists, when Lamar Odom helped with 21 points.

In his Lakers debut, Smush Parker only had 6 points.

"Smush will be starting all season long and he just needs time to fit," Jackson said about Parker.

On Suns' side, they defeated Dallas, 86-72, with 18 and 16 points from Raja Bell and Shawn Marion, respectively.

[ LOS ANGELES, Nov. 3 (Ticker) ] -- That's what we call a teamwork win.

8 Suns players scored in double-figures as Phoenix defeated the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center, 132-106.

All 5 starters scored at least 11 points (Steve Nash had 26), and the Suns led the game from the beginning, with a 38-24 first quarter and a 72-48 first half.

Suns bench, led by Eddie House's 15 points, shot 18-of-32 from the field (.562%), for a total of 46 points.

"Our new guys are stepping in and learning the new system really well; the Lakers were coming off a lucky win in Denver last night, and they were on the second night of a back to back, and we wanted to take advantage of that. It was a big win," Mike D'Antoni said.

Lakers' Kwame Brown and Kobe Bryant both were fouled-out in the first minute of the last quarter, and all hopes of win were aniquilated.

Brown had 12 points and 6 rebounds, when Bryant "only" had 19 and 5 assists.

After scoring 6 points against Denver, Smush Parker scored 24 (8-of-14 from the field, 2-of-3 3-pointers, 6-of-8 free throws) and 6 assists.

"I told you so. He just needed time to fit," Phil Jackson said.

* With 2:13 remaining, Lakers didn't have time to win
* House showing his moves
* Parker is averaging 15 points in 2 games
* Lamar Odom stepped up in the last quarter, posting 15 of his 23 points
* Chris Mihm had a 16-13 double-double
* Devean George added 6 points for LA
* One of Brian Cook's 6 rebounds
* Nash showing his playmaker abilities
* Odom shot 2-of-6 3s
* Brian Grant added 14 points for the Suns

You will see that the pics are bigger (they were 386x290 before, they are 400x300 now; yeah, it's not much difference, but well).

He was fouled out with almost 11:30 remaining in the last quarter, he could get over 30 if he got less faults :P

lol my fault; couldn't remember the font I was using in the last games, I copied the Suns one from the last game and I did the Lakers before posting the recap, that's why they have different fonts.

Suns Assign Thompson to Thunderbirds

Suns Assign Thompson
to Albuquerque Thunderbirds

The Phoenix Suns designated rookie small forward Dijon Thompson to the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the NBA Development League on Friday. The Thunderbirds were assigned as the Suns' D-League affiliate for the 2005-06 season.

Thompson is the third NBA player to be assigned to a D-League affiliate, as the Minnesota Timberwolves also designated center Dwayne Jones and guard Bracey Wright to the Florida Flame.

“This is a great opportunity for Dijon, as well as a great opportunity for us,” Albuquerque Head Coach Michael Cooper said. "Dijon has an opportunity to develop his skills even more, making him an even better player when he returns to Phoenix."

Thompson was selected with the 54th overall selection in the second round of the 2005 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks, but his draft rights were traded to the Suns along with forward/center Kurt Thomas in exchange for guard/forward Quentin Richardson and the draft rights to guard Nate Robinson (21st pick) on June 28, 2005. He averaged 7.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and shot .372 (16-43 FG) from the floor in six games at the 2005 Reebok Vegas Summer League.

"Apparently, the Suns and Timberwolves believe these players will develop at a more rapid rate by playing in the D-League.” NBA D-League President Phil Evans said. “We look forward to more NBA teams utilizing the opportunity."

Thompson averaged 12.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 117 career games (72 starts) at UCLA. He averaged 14.0 points or more in his final three seasons with the Bruins, and led the team in scoring in his final two seasons.

A First Team All-Pac 10 selection as a senior, Thompson earned the Coach John Wooden Award as UCLA’s Most Valuable Player for the 2004-05 season after sharing the honor with new Thunderbirds teammate T.J. Cummings in 2003-04.
