Despite Arenas's 37, Pacers Blow Out Bullets In Opener
Pacers 121, Bullets 106 | Team Stats
October 28, 2010 - Gilbert Arenas had 37 off the bench, Josh Howard and Darko Milicic looked solid and the team shot 50% from the field. Not the easiest fifteen point loss to swallow. In the season opener and unveiling of the new Bullets court and jerseys, Washington was embarrassed as usual. Danny Granger outdid Arenas with 38, while #1 overall pick John Wall had a debut to remember with 20 points and 17 dimes. The team played awful defense, undermining its 106 points.
The game was all Pacers from the start. Indiana opened up the game with a 14-2 run. Arenas was promptly subbed in for Larry Hughes to stop the bleeding. With Dahntay Jones and Brandon Rush out, TJ Ford was starting at the 2, but neither he nor Ramon Sessions capitalized on the small SG mismatch. Indiana held off a mini-run sparked by Arenas to take a 30-23 lead going into the second. Gilbert and Josh started to get hot, while Darko crashed the boards. Unfortunately, the continued complacency on the defensive end prove costly, and Washington entered halftime down 12. Arenas had 15, while Danny Granger had 20.
Gil caught fire in the third. He scored 13 of his eventual 37, and the Bullets pulled to within 3 with 4 minutes left in the quarter. Granger hit a pair of threes to stop the bleeding, and John Wall drew two fouls against Arenas, ending the quarter on a sour note. The Bullets endured their first scoring drought early in the final period, as Indiana opened the period with an 13-4 run. Washington would not come within single digits again. Despite efforts by Gilbert, Darko and Josh, Indiana held our team off for a 121-106 triumph. I didn't join the chorus of boos because my mouth was full from the chalupa I got (gotta love having a high-paced team for chalupa threshold purposes).
All in all, the loss was disheartening. The Pacers were clearly picked as an easy win to kick off the new Bullets era, but we were still blown out. Granger took a dump on our "defense", while John Wall had quite the debut to remember. We have the defending champs tomorrow night, and despite Vince Carter being out until the all-star break (at the earliest), there is no way in hell we're winning. I wish I was a Blazers fan.[ Image ] [ Image ]
Sure, John Wall had a good game, but you know what? So did Darko. John Wall = Darko.

Gil posterized Danny Granger. Granger responded by dropping 38 points on us. Worth it.

October 29, 2010 - The Washington Bullets were suffered a demoralizing blowout in their opener at the hands of the Indiana Pacers, and were expected to be blown out by the defending champs. The Bullets didn't seem to get the memo. Washington overcame an early 8 point deficit to keep up with the Magic and make a game of it. Thanks to big nights by Gilbert Arenas (30 points), and Ramon Sessions (8-11 FG), the Bullets led by 1 entering the fourth. However, the Magic locked down on the defensive end, and would prove to be too much. Orlando took a 7 point lead early in the fourth, and held on to win it 111-107.

I edit some of them down (Ronald Stuckey improving from 72 to 79 was the worst), but its pretty annoying. When guys like DeRozan improve its ok, but its stupid when guys like Jose Calderon become superstars over summer.

November 1, 2010 - In the 2007-08 season, the Los Angeles Clippers lost star player Elton Brand for the season, but still managed to open the season with a 4-0 record. Unfortunately for them, they were who we thought they were as they would win just 19 more to finish a bleak 23-59 year. This offseason, our team lost its two best players in Steve Nash and Amar'e Stoudemire. With a win over the Bullets tonight, we have improved to a 4-0 record against all odds.
It didn't look like it would be from the start. The Bullets opened on fire with a 14-3 run, and finished the first quarter 30-21. We got back on track, as Leandro Barbosa (our man - league scoring leader with 32.7 PPG coming into the game) found his shot. Rookie Ed Davis showed why the Suns acquired him with some excellent hustle off the bench, and shut down the slumping Andray Blatche. Gilbert Arenas was the only guy generating offense for Washington as we opened up a two point halftime lead.
The game was very close in the third, with the two teams trading leads. Their guards Arenas and Ramon Sessions were unstoppable, but the rest of the team was neutralized. Meanwhile, Barbosa and Davis continued to shoulder the load for us. We clung to a measly one point lead going into the fourth. Then, Jordan Farmar saved the day. Farmar hit a pair of dagger threes, forced the ball out of Arenas and Sessions' hands and helped us to a double digit lead midway through the period. Darko Milicic had a double-double, but the rest of Washington's supporting cast just didn't come to play. We hold on to win 99-89.
As great as it is to start a season 4-0, it brings up some concerns. The face that it took a fluke night from Farmar and a tremendous game from Ed Davis to edge out a probable 50 loss team shows that this team could lack the mettle down the stretch. While I know this team can't contend, I think this team is a lot better than those '08 Clippers. Our Saturday game in Cleveland will be a major test of the legitimacy of both our team and Barbosa's MVP candidacy.[ Image ] [ Image ]
Ramon Sessions and Darko Milicic had decent outings, but when they are two of your top 3 players, you're going to suck.

November 3, 2010 - Neither team shot particularly well, but in the end, the Utah Jazz got the last laugh as they defeated the winless Washington Bullets. The first half was closely contested, but behind their big 3 of Deron, Boozer and rookie Evan Turner, they took a small third quarter lead and never looked back. Gilbert Arenas led his team in scoring with 20 for the fourth straight time, and Ramon Sessions filled the stat sheet, but it was not enough.

November 4, 2010 - Its early, but the Kings might actually be a threat this season. Led by 2010 rookie of the year Tyreke Evans, the Kings destroyed the Washington Bullets, who fall to 0-5. Gilbert Arenas once again led all scorers with 22, while JaVale McGee and Andray Blatche had their best games of the season for Washington, but as usual, the rest of the team was ineffective. The Kings improve to 3-1, tied with the Lakers for #2 in the Pacific Division.

Undefeated Heat Burn Winless Bullets

American Airlines Arena, Miami, FL
Team Stats
This game went exactly as planned. The winless Washington Bullets traveled to Miami to face the Heat, one of four undefeated teams in the league (the others being Phoenix, Portland and Orlando). The Heat blew out the Bullets, leading by as many as 25 in the second half, before settling for a modest 101-90 win. The Heat shot 72% from the field in the first three quarters.
Gilbert Arenas (the team's scoring leader yet again) and Ramon Sessions continued to be the terrible Bullets' only bright spots, putting in solid games. Unfortunately for them, the rest of the team's play was lackadaisical and their defense was worse. Dwyane Wade, Amar'e Stoudemire and even Jermaine "the drain" O'Neal lit them up. The Heat look like legit title contenders, while the Bullets look like legit lottery contenders.
Don't let the final score fool you, the Heat dominated. They held a 87-64 edge going into the fourth, before the team's bench scored a gentleman's 14 points in the fourth, enough for the win and free food for the crowd. This is going to be a long season series for Washington.[ Image ] [ Image ]
White rookie big men Ray Lliach and Donatas Motiejunas were on display in tonight's fourth quarter.
