Sat Oct 01, 2005 10:55 pm

Losing to the bobcats..... Tisk tisk. Another 31 TO performance as well. Kareem Rush torched you as well. Maybe it's a sign that you should get him back?

Sun Oct 02, 2005 12:57 am

WHAT, another loss, that's a shame...

if i were playing this bad, i would try a line-up of Brown, Odom, George, Jones and Bryant... nice and tall... but that's not up to me. But you really should at least put Bryant at the Point because McKie can't handle the point much.... and your turnoving is nott good

hopefully the season will start well

October Recap/Season Preview

30 Oct, Los Angeles

The LA Lakers are in for a very long NBA season this year. The team finished a disappointing 0-6 during the preseason with losses to Seattle, Houston, Charlotte, Sacramento and Toronto. With Phil Jackson back, Kwame Brown on board and Lamar Odom learning from Scottie Pippen, fans were hoping for an eight seeding in the playoffs. The Lakers October showing guarantees nothing except for a lottery position.

Kobe Bryant was once again the most impressive player on the court for LA as he showed the NBA how hard he has been working out, racking up averages of 36 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 5.2 apg, 3.7 spg in 6 starts. He has also shot way too well on 50.3 % from the field and 56% from beyond the arc. Phil Jackson noted, “Kobe’s not going to be expected to carry this team but the way he’s been playing shows he has the ability to be able to do so.”

Lamar Odom who has been training one on one with Scottie Pippen, the player who made famous the point forward position, averaged 18.3 ppg, 5 rpg, 4.2 apg and 1.3 spg. Odom who has been having trouble adjusting to his new job did fairly well, with his averages dropping slightly after an injury plagued sixth match. His best game was his first against the Sacramento Kings where he scored 24 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists and committing just 2 turnovers.

Aaron Mckie who was signed as the Lakers’ starter at PG struggled at first but has since made amends with his decent play over the last three games. Against Seattle, he scored 14 points and against the Bobcats he dished out 8 dimes. The 6’5” guard form Temple, has been reunited with Philly native Bryant and averaged 6.3 ppg, 3.2 apg, 2.2 spg in just 30 mpg.

Kwame Brown who was acquired in the Caron Butler trade has proved his worth as a former number one draft pick. The 6’11” PF averaged 13.7 ppg, 11.3 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.3 spg, 2.2 bpg on 51% from the field and has split time at both center and power forward for the Lakers. “Kwame has fit in well with the team. I think Lamar, Kobe and he will be a good trio to look out for,” Brian Shaw said of the three.

LA just didn’t have any chances to win a game thanks to poor defensive play. Even though Bryant is dominating on offence, he and his teammates still turn the ball over too much. The depth at center and point guard is too slim and the Lakers are finding it difficult to control the boards.

If LA want to win this season, they must rely on Bryant and Odom. Bryant is ready for a second chance at leading this team while Odom will improve once the season begins. Expect Bryant to rack up 32, 5, 5 and add 2 spg for good measure. And thanks to Pippen, look for Odom to up his rebounding numbers and average 20, 10 and 5 for the year. Apart form those two, the rest of the Lakers are suspect.

Kwame Brown will want to prove that he isn’t a draft bust and whether he passes or fails in this will surely affect the Lakers’ season. At first, it seemed like a hard task but after this preseason, Brown seems to be for real and should average a double double at least. Aaron Mckie on the other end is also doubtful. In his first season as a full time PG, Mckie’s performance will be critical to LA’s success. When he has got the minutes, Mckie does play well. He is needed to clog up the passing lanes, play solid defense and is crucial on the fast break. The veteran’s play has been erratic and hopefully, it will improve. Chris Mihm needs to put up solid numbers and give the Lakers their second big man and interior presence. The 7’0” C has shown that he can play well and just needs to fix his nerves problem when playing away.

The Lakers’ bench is still to be decided. Slava Medvedenko has surely kept his place on the pine thanks to his 18 point and 7 rebound performance against Charlotte. Sasha Vujacic has given LA a solid option to play PG when Mckie needs a break. The 6’7” guard has the explosiveness and handles to be able to fit into Jax’s system. Luke Walton should be back too after taking a rest this preseason thanks to an injury sustained I training camp.

Von Wafer and Andrew Bynum are sure to be spending time in the NBDL this season as assistant coach Michael Cooper said of the duo, “They just aren’t ready for the NBA yet.” Brian Cook has also kept his place on the team showing the Lakers that they have a forward who can shoot.

The team is rounded up by small forwards Devean Geroge and Jumaine Jones. Although, the two of them played well in the last 6 games, expect one of them to be shipped for a PG. “There’s not enough space for two,” Will Sit said in a press conference.

In order for LA to win, they need to follow Jax’s triangle offence carefully and try hard on the defensive end of the court. Stray shots on the glass need to be picked up quickly and the ball handling needs to be tightened up.

The season outlook is grim although Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom are money right now. Laker fans are in for another tough one.

What can I say? I envy your article-writing. That article pretty much summed up what was going on in the pre-season, and it's got some pretty good details that make it interesting.

Yeah if your gonna deal one of the small fowards, make it Devean, it would be nice to see him get more time on another team.

Sun Oct 02, 2005 1:43 pm

The Lakers did not do well in the pre-season games but I hope you can start winning when the actual regular season games starts. That is a very good October recap and I like it. Goodluck on your first regular season game.

Sun Oct 02, 2005 3:14 pm

trade Devean :P

Sun Oct 02, 2005 3:21 pm

Sun Oct 02, 2005 7:01 pm

that's one way for the Lakers to win a game

good to see Laron Profit starring for you (Y)

Sun Oct 02, 2005 10:17 pm

Good recap!

In my opinion you could need some cluch shooters besides Kobe. And I hope you manage to win the season opener. That could be a great new beginning, putting the losses behind you.

30 Oct, Los Angeles – Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom put on a show for fans in the Lakers’ final open scrimmage where tickets were sold to raise money for AIDS and breast cancer. “Those are the two charities the Lakers will support this season,” GM Sit stated during pre-game festivities.

The Lakers practiced for fans before breaking into a three point shootout and dunk contest. Jumaine Jones won the impromptu dunk contest with the fans cheering loudest after his thunderous double pump, 360 jam. Devean George was a surprise winner in the three point shootout as he beat out Sasha Vujcic and Kobe Bryant.

The six minute quarters helped the game go quickly but it wasn’t missing any of the suspense or intensity usually displayed in an official NBA game. The spectators got their money’s worth as the two practice sides lead the game to a furious finish.

Bryant led his white team with 23 points and 4 assists. Chris Mihm played an outstanding match finishing with a double double of 10 and 11, including a huge block on Jumaine Jones late in the game. Slava Medvedenko continued his campaign for a starting spot with 13 points and 9 rebounds while Aaron Mckie dished out 6 dimes.

Lamar Odom led the black team with 14, 3 and 4 in 19 minutes, shortened only by injury. Jumaine Jones and Devean George both scored in double figures with 12 and 11 respectively while Kwame Brown added 8 and 9.

“Both teams played well today and it only makes it harder for us to select the final team and the starting lineup,” Michael Cooper said. Phil Jackson added, “We are really not sure who to pick out of Slava, Kwame and Chris to take the 5 and 4 spots.”

Punk rock band ‘Greenday’ performed live at halftime to a roaring STAPLES crowd who didn’t stop making noise since they entered the arena. Magic Johnson was given a standing ovation from the people in attendance after making a speech about AIDS to the crowd.

The match started with a 12-2 run by Odom’s team thanks to Jumaine Jones and Devean George. Suddenly, Bryant led his team back into the contest scoring 6 straight points late in the first period. After the break, the two teams kept playing at an even pace but Bryant’s white team making more mistakes with the rock allowing the black team to take a 4 point lead into the halftime break.

After intermission, the black team were down to business as Odom dominated on offence with 8 third quarter points and even made 3 of his 4 assists in that period. As Brian Cook noticed, “Lamar was the reason for every bucket we got in the third quarter.”

Bryant and his team missed 8 consecutive shots late in the third quarter but came out of the break to come back into the game by scoring two unanswered baskets in the beginning two minutes of the final quarter. The black team was held scoreless for half of the final 6 minutes of the game and their fortunes only got worse when Odom sustained an arm injury; sideling him for the final 4 minutes of the match.

The black team led for a little while sitting on 48-46 before Bryant gave his team its first lead in the game thanks to a trey at 2:25. Devean George’s mid range jumper put the black side ahead 50-49 with 1:53 remaining. Little did the two sides know that it would be the last time the black team scored; as they fumbled many attempts to get towards a win. Walton’s assist to Chris Mihm at the 1:10 mark put the white team up 50-51. Jumaine Jones missed a jumper and Medvedenko picked up a board before Mihm hit a hook shot with 44.2 left on the clock to make the score 50-53. George missed a desperate three point attempt before Medvendeko secured the rebound and gave the ball to Bryant who ran the clock down before going up for a shot. Bryant was fouled and made 2 free throws with 11.7 seconds left. Bryant then sealed the game with one of two free throws with just 3.7 seconds left in the game.

“It was a great pleasure to play for the fans tonight,” team captain Bryant said, “I enjoyed every minute of it. I hope we get this type of atmosphere every home game this season!”

Notes

F Lamar Odom’s injury concerns are heightening as team doctors are looking at X-rays of his arm… Phil Jackson coached the black team while Brian Shaw and Kurt Rambis took over the White side… The open scrimmage raised funds for AIDS and breast cancer awareness programs… SG Kobe Bryant did not take part in the impromptu slam dunk contest…

Yeah. Too bad for the injury, but I'll guess he'll shake it off for the Season opener.
