CPU dunk/layup blocking ability is going up to 6 instead of 5. I don't want to make dramatic changes because it's not exactly cool if I get destroyed and then I'll just want to change it back.

NUGGETS' HIGH-PERCENTAGE SHOOTING LEAVES NO CHANCE FOR RAPTORS

Denver 104
Toronto 94

You only need a glance at the team stats to see why the Denver Nuggets have been winning so many ball games this season. With a shooting percentage of .672 tonight against the Toronto Raptors, it is clear why Denver have been so dominant in the NBA this season. The Nuggets also managed to completely outrebound their opponents in Toronto. The Raptors had a good performance shooting-wise, with Jalen Rose, Morris Peterson and Rafer Alston all putting up decent figures and shooting accurately from outside. But again, it was Denver's inside play that decided the game. Jason Williams and Joe Johnson also contributed, both guards grabbing rebounds and Johnson hitting the only open shot he had all game in the fourth quarter to kill off the Raptors. Nuggets center Marcus Camby suffered an unfortunate injury towards the end of the game and there is no information yet on whether he will be able to travel to Houston to meet the Rockets tomorrow night.

"It's a blow because he's a very good player and our top rebounder", said power forward Nene, who could have also been injured after being fouled throughout the game. "But we just have to step up, myself and Francisco [Elson]. This kind of thing might also happen in the playoffs so we have to be ready to play an even bigger role."

Just so you won't forget how it looks when Martin dunks.

Williams makes a typical strong drive to the basket.

Anthony dunks under the maple leaf. Or something.

Mon Aug 08, 2005 10:55 pm

Even Francisco Elson had 3-4 shooting. This was definitely NOT the team that was going to stop the Nuggets inside. I'm still waiting for that team to show up.

Most teams seem to have, like, one good defender in the post. If he's up against Camby I go to Martin and if he's up against Martin I go to Camby. And when Nene comes in they have some weak bench player and Nene destroys him.

Well, Camby's injured. Not sure how long. Be careful what you wish for eh?

Nice and easy win against the Raptors, you took care of business. Good luck next game. (Y)

Can they do it?
by Mike Nugget, Denver Post Sports Writer

Denver Nuggets have been the most consistent team in the NBA this season. With the playoffs closing in, one question is being asked more than anything. Can they do it? Can the Nuggets bring home the NBA championship? In this article I will take a closer look at what kind of chances our Nuggets stand come playoff time.

Regular season basketball meets playoff basketball
Denver has the best record of all teams in the NBA. They currently stand at 18-5 so it's no secret to anyone that they have what it takes to win ball games. It still remains a secret, however, how they will perform come playoff time. In the playoffs, every team is bound to step up their game and Denver must be able to do the same. Even though the Nuggets beat the San Antonio Spurs early in the season, it remains to be seen whether the Spurs, a much more experienced playoff team, have something up their sleeve the Nuggets don't. This team has not gone far in the playoffs before, but now they're expected to be the best of the West.

Rivals

Denver have beat most of their rivals in the Western Conference. San Antonio, Phoenix and Portland stand third, fourth and fifth in the Conference. The only top team they haven't faced in their own Conference are the Sacramento Kings. The Nuggets will close the regular season with a game against Sacramento. It could well be these two teams that go head-to-head in the Conference Finals. The regular season game will give an idea of who has the advantage over these two.

Team effort
Denver don't have a Bryant or a McGrady in their team, or a Shaq or a Duncan. Kenyon Martin is quickly becoming one of the league's top players, but Denver's biggest strength is the fact that they are a team. They have five good players starting and a solid bench to back them up. But do they lack a player who has the quality of the ones just mentioned? It's hard to say, but it was only a couple of years ago when Detroit Pistons won the championship with a very similar team. If Denver get to the finals, that is the team they could be facing.

Injuries
There is always the risk of injury in basketball. There are players in the team that Denver could afford having injured, but an injury to Kenyon Martin could prove a killer blow for this team, not to forget Marcus Camby, who is the top rebounder and starting center. Even Nene, who has been very productive off the bench, is a vital player for the team, as is Carmelo Anthony, who despite averaging less points than last season is still the only player in the team who can do pretty much everything: passing, stealing, defending, rebounding and scoring.

Inside play
This is Denver's biggest strength. If they want to reach the finals, they must make use of this to the best of their abilities. Most teams have been able to hold one or even two of Denver's inside threats, but not all three: Camby, Martin and Nene. If a team manages to hold all three to average figures in the playoffs, it's most likely all over for Denver. This seems unlikely, but Denver do hold an ace up their sleeve in Carmelo Anthony as well as Joe Johnson, who has been limited to only few outside jumpers.

Martin
Kenyon must reach the same level in the playoffs he's been playing at during the regular season. The great players have proved themselves in the playoffs, and while it's all been going amazingly well for the slam-dunk champ, he still has to take his game up one step to become a truly great player.

Defence
Denver have been very good defensively this season, holding the opponent's star player to very average figures many times. As long as the players play the level of defence expected of them, it shouldn't be possible for a single player to score and destroy Denver by himself. As it is, there are no weak defenders in the Nuggets team, with maybe a couple of exceptions in Wesley Person and DerMarr Johnson. What matters also is how Denver's opponents choose to play defence. A couple of teams tried zone defence in order to shut down the Nuggets, and this might be an option if they want to limit Nuggets to outside shooting. In this case, it's up to Joe Johnson, Jason Williams and Wesley Person to make their share of the buckets.

Conclusion
At the moment it's hard for anyone to bet against the Nuggets, but there's still a lot of basketball to be played. But can they do it? Your guess is probably as good as mine.

Woah, this was supposed to be "in a nutshell". It turned out quite long anyways...

Tue Aug 09, 2005 12:37 am

Great win....I love how you did the "Denver Post"...good luck next game

Tue Aug 09, 2005 1:56 am

shocker loss to wizards. nice bounce-back vs memphis.

I wanted to keep going for a few seasons but if I win the championship I'm not sure what's left for me to do with this team.

good q...maybe you'll be offered to take the gm job with a sucky team, altho i dunno if that appeals to you

Tue Aug 09, 2005 2:15 am

Great job with the Denver Post, I really like that touch.

Tue Aug 09, 2005 2:31 am

Thanks for the feedback... I've been playing these games out of the way because I want to get to the playoffs... this way you don't remain so focused and it might explain my next result...

NUGGETS LOSE IN HOUSTON

Denver 85
Houston 100

The Denver Nuggets suffered only their sixth defeat of the season after going down against the Houston Rockets last night in Houston. Denver were unable to match the Rockets' hot shooting and started to fall behind in the second quarter. Center Yao Ming led the Rockets to victory with 20 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks, playing against Marcus Camby, who started the game despite having been injured just yesterday. The Nuggets' decision to play Camby proved questionable after the center had to leave the game in the third quarter due to the injury reoccurring. Denver had good figures from Kenyon Martin, Nene and Carmelo Anthony, while the Rockets got 20+ points from David Wesley and Scott Padgett in addition to Yao. Surprisingly, Rockets star Tracy McGrady was held to only eight points, but in the end it didn't matter with other players taking over. The Nuggets could get a rematch come playoff time, but before that there are still games to play, the next of them against the Charlotte Bobcats.

Starters:
Denver (18-5 before game)
C M. Camby
F K. Martin
F C. Anthony
G J. Johnson
G J. Williams

T-Mac lays it up for two of only his eight points.

Tough loss but you held T-mac to only 8 points  ....good luck next game

Tue Aug 09, 2005 3:05 am

Tough loss, Scott Padgett burned you with 3's. But you did a good job on T-Mac and K-Mart had a good game.

Tue Aug 09, 2005 3:40 am

tough loss...good luck next game

Tue Aug 09, 2005 4:42 am

Padgett's tough. 3-point shooting big man, pulls your PF away from the basket but can do it while scoring too. Tough break losing though. Still, come playoff time, you'll be ready to roll.

Wed Aug 10, 2005 2:10 am

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Padgett is definitely a tough player. I realized that and I was also surprised to see T-Mac do nothing.

As for losing I really couldn't care less at the moment. Sure it's nice to finish first in the conference, but in that case I might get... Minnesota in the first round. KG against K-Mart. That could be the toughest matchup my big man has had all season. I'll face them soon.

NUGGETS WIN WITH LITTLE EFFORT AGAINST BOBCATS

Charlotte 61
Denver 83

Denver's win against Charlotte was hardly a good basketball game to watch. The Nuggets cruised to victory with very little effort, making bad passes and unforced turnovers. They still managed to come away with a 21-point winning margin, which tells a lot about what a quality team they have, but also how little the Bobcats had to offer. It is a surprise to see the Charlotte team with a record as good as 8 wins and 12 losses. Denver started Nene at center, due to Marcus Camby's recent injury problems. Nene went up against Emeka Okafor much of the time, but put up 19 points, while Kenyon Martin had 24 and 11 rebounds. The rest of the team contributed well enough to get the points needed to win the game. It was hardly a good warm-up for the Nuggets, who still have four regular season games left against four teams with winning records.

"It wasn't really a good game by us", said Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony. "We seriously need to sharpen up before the playoffs and cut out all those simple mistakes we made tonight."

Starters:
Charlotte (8-11 before game)
C E. Okafor
F S. May
F G. Wallace
G K. Rush
G R. Felton

Denver (18-6 before game)
C Nene
F K. Martin

Wed Aug 10, 2005 2:11 am

Great win....even though its not that hard...good luck next game

Wed Aug 10, 2005 2:22 am

man, melo only took 6 shots. oh well...at least you won

Wed Aug 10, 2005 5:29 pm

Yep, Melo's been involved very rarely on the offence. I'm still having trouble getting the ball to him, but then again there's no need because I can score 15 with Nene without effort.

This is one of the things that annoy me the most. It's impossible to get a shooting percentage of under .500 with the post players. I don't even need Anthony. If I make the game more difficult with more blocks or something it will affect Melo's game too.

I have four games left, Magic next, then T-Wolves, Warriors and Kings.

Wed Aug 10, 2005 5:54 pm

Good luck with those four games!
