Can they do it?
by Mike Nugget, Denver Post Sports Writer
Denver Nuggets have been the most consistent team in the NBA this season. With the playoffs closing in, one question is being asked more than anything. Can they do it? Can the Nuggets bring home the NBA championship? In this article I will take a closer look at what kind of chances our Nuggets stand come playoff time.
Regular season basketball meets playoff basketball
Denver has the best record of all teams in the NBA. They currently stand at 18-5 so it's no secret to anyone that they have what it takes to win ball games. It still remains a secret, however, how they will perform come playoff time. In the playoffs, every team is bound to step up their game and Denver must be able to do the same. Even though the Nuggets beat the San Antonio Spurs early in the season, it remains to be seen whether the Spurs, a much more experienced playoff team, have something up their sleeve the Nuggets don't. This team has not gone far in the playoffs before, but now they're expected to be the best of the West.
Rivals
Denver have beat most of their rivals in the Western Conference. San Antonio, Phoenix and Portland stand third, fourth and fifth in the Conference. The only top team they haven't faced in their own Conference are the Sacramento Kings. The Nuggets will close the regular season with a game against Sacramento. It could well be these two teams that go head-to-head in the Conference Finals. The regular season game will give an idea of who has the advantage over these two.
Team effort
Denver don't have a Bryant or a McGrady in their team, or a Shaq or a Duncan. Kenyon Martin is quickly becoming one of the league's top players, but Denver's biggest strength is the fact that they are a team. They have five good players starting and a solid bench to back them up. But do they lack a player who has the quality of the ones just mentioned? It's hard to say, but it was only a couple of years ago when Detroit Pistons won the championship with a very similar team. If Denver get to the finals, that is the team they could be facing.
Injuries
There is always the risk of injury in basketball. There are players in the team that Denver could afford having injured, but an injury to Kenyon Martin could prove a killer blow for this team, not to forget Marcus Camby, who is the top rebounder and starting center. Even Nene, who has been very productive off the bench, is a vital player for the team, as is Carmelo Anthony, who despite averaging less points than last season is still the only player in the team who can do pretty much everything: passing, stealing, defending, rebounding and scoring.
Inside play
This is Denver's biggest strength. If they want to reach the finals, they must make use of this to the best of their abilities. Most teams have been able to hold one or even two of Denver's inside threats, but not all three: Camby, Martin and Nene. If a team manages to hold all three to average figures in the playoffs, it's most likely all over for Denver. This seems unlikely, but Denver do hold an ace up their sleeve in Carmelo Anthony as well as Joe Johnson, who has been limited to only few outside jumpers.
Martin
Kenyon must reach the same level in the playoffs he's been playing at during the regular season. The great players have proved themselves in the playoffs, and while it's all been going amazingly well for the slam-dunk champ, he still has to take his game up one step to become a truly great player.
Defence
Denver have been very good defensively this season, holding the opponent's star player to very average figures many times. As long as the players play the level of defence expected of them, it shouldn't be possible for a single player to score and destroy Denver by himself. As it is, there are no weak defenders in the Nuggets team, with maybe a couple of exceptions in Wesley Person and DerMarr Johnson. What matters also is how Denver's opponents choose to play defence. A couple of teams tried zone defence in order to shut down the Nuggets, and this might be an option if they want to limit Nuggets to outside shooting. In this case, it's up to Joe Johnson, Jason Williams and Wesley Person to make their share of the buckets.
Conclusion
At the moment it's hard for anyone to bet against the Nuggets, but there's still a lot of basketball to be played. But can they do it? Your guess is probably as good as mine.

Woah, this was supposed to be "in a nutshell". It turned out quite long anyways...
