Game #26: Orlando Magic (6-19) @ Milwaukee Bucks (15-10)

MIL 105, ORL 94

Ex-Bucks Can’t Beat Former Team- Milwaukee Wins Last Home Game of Regular Season

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN- The struggling Orlando Magic visited the Milwaukee Bucks last night at the Bradley Center, and it marked the return of 4 ex-Bucks to Milwaukee, all of whom were in the starting lineup: Joe Smith, Eddie Jones, Michael Redd, and Dan Gadzuric.
 Only Smith and Redd were able to feel that they got some revenge from the team that dealt them; both players played great. Smith notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and held Dwight Howard to another bad shooting night (5-for-13), and Redd torched the nets for a game-high 35 points  .
 But the Bucks got the last laugh, as they rolled to an 11-point, 105-94 victory. Their superstar, Dwyane Wade, flirted with a triple-double as he collected 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 12 assists in the game  . Also, 2 former members of the Magic, Dwight Howard and Grant Hill, both played well: Howard had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Hill had a great shooting night (11-for-15, 73.3%) en route to his 23-point, 4-rebound effort.
 Unlike Milwaukee’s previous game (a loss to Detroit) when Wade, Hill, and Howard were the only players to score in double-figures, last night against the Magic 2 others stepped up: point guard Nate Robinson had 14 points, and reserve sharpshooter Kareem Rush had 10 points despite missing all 4 of his three-point attempts.
 A big turning point in the game came at the end of the third quarter. The Bucks and Magic were fighting for the lead when suddenly Milwaukee got hot from downtown. Nate Robinson buried 2 consecutive threes, and then Grant Hill beat the third-quarter buzzer with another 3 to put the Bucks up 76-69 heading into the fourth quarter.
 Their 2-point advantage had been pushed to 7, a deficit from which the Magic could never recover. Orlando fell behind by 9 early on in the 4th, then slowly cut it to 4, but saw the Bucks lead grow once again to 8 and then 11 by the end of the game. Solid defense had much to do with the end result. The Bucks forced 7 turnovers in the fourth, and the Magic finished with less assists (16) than turnovers (17) in the ballgame. “It’s hard to win like that,” Magic coach Johnny Davis said.
 The Magic have found winning in general to be hard this year. Their record fell to 6-20, while the Bucks are now 16-10.

GAME NOTES
This was the final regular-season home game for the Bucks. They finished with a 10-5 mark at the Bradley Center on the year, a very good record. Their final three games of the season will all be on the road, starting at Sacramento against the struggling Sacramento Kings.

Game #27: Milwaukee Bucks (16-10) @ Sacramento Kings (5-19)

MIL 110, SAC 102

Balanced Attack Defeats Kings- Sacramento Drops 12th Straight Game

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA- Earlier this season, the Sacramento Kings possessed a record of 5-7. But, after last night’s defeat at the hands of the surging Milwaukee Bucks, the Kings fell to 5-20. That’s 12 straight losses!
 Bucks coach Terry Porter commented after the game about the mentality of playing a team on a big losing streak: “It seems logical to want to play a team that’s on a big losing streak, because you figure their confidence is non-existent, maybe their team is in disarray, guys aren’t getting along, etc. But I’ve always felt that I’d rather play a team that’s on a winning streak because they’re going to be more loose, less focused probably, just overall more easygoing. But play a team that’s on a big losing streak, watch out, because most likely they’re going to be playing with a desperation, an anger, and also they’re playing for job security- to not get traded or fired.
 So the Bucks came into Arco Arena prepared to play a tough game of basketball, and that’s exactly how it was. The Kings fought hard all night long. They dominated the boards with a 47-34 advantage; their center Brad Miller had 20 rebounds alone, including 11 on the offensive glass.
 The teams were tied at the end of the first half at 50-50, and then the Bucks made an attempt to take over the game in the third quarter. They pulled out to a 10-point lead with the score 78-68, but the Kings didn’t even think of giving in. They responded with a 10-0 run to end the quarter, and once again it was a tie game, 78-78, going into the fourth quarter.
 In the final period, it came down to execution, and that’s how the Bucks were able to prevail. They shot 50% in the quarter, only turned the ball over 2 times, and made all 11 of their free throws to make sure the Kings weren’t going to overtake them. So slowly but surely, Milwaukee increased their lead, and finally Beno Udrih’s 3 pointer with less than a minute left gave them an 8-point advantage, 110-102. That was the backbreaker, and the final score, leaving the Kings to ponder about their mistakes for the 12th consecutive game, and wish for the season to end. The Bucks, on the other hand, are rolling towards the postseason, having won 6 of their last 8 ballgames. They improved their record to 17-10.

GAME NOTES
Bucks’ starting center Vlade Divac had his best game in a long while against his former team, the Kings. He scored 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.

A big problem for the Kings in this game was their lack of bench production. They received just 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists from their reserves in the entire game. The Bucks’ bench wasn’t much better: 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 assist. Milwaukee depended heavily on a big game from Dwight Howard (30 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 6 blocks :D ) and Grant Hill (25 points, 6 rebounds) to get the “W”.

Game #28: Milwaukee Bucks (17-10) @ Denver Nuggets (15-12)

MIL 99, DEN 93

Little Man Plays Big in W- Nate Robinson Saves Bucks from Defeat in Tough Game

DENVER, COLORADO- The Milwaukee Bucks have already clinched a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference- now they’re playing for positioning and home court advantage. With that in mind they contested the Denver Nuggets at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado last night. It took a complete team effort and a stellar individual effort from all 5 feet and 9 inches of Nate Robinson, but in the end the Bucks were able to pull out the victory.
 The Nuggets took control of the game early, leading by as many as 9 points in the first quarter. Their leader Carmelo Anthony got off to a great start with 9 points by making 4 of his 7 field goal attempts, and things were looking up for Nuggets’ fans as their team led 27-19 after 1 quarter of basketball.
 In the second, the Nuggets continued to light up the Bucks and extended their lead to double-digits. The Bucks went on a small run to cut the score to 43-40, but Denver pushed it back to 48-40 again. They played with great focus and energy, and were intent on not letting their lead slip away.
 When Bucks coach Terry Porter inserted Nate Robinson into the game in the second quarter, he immediately noticed that the diminutive PG was playing extremely well. Robinson scored 10 points while making all 4 of his field goal attempts, and dished out 5 assists in the quarter for good measure. Since starting point guard Beno Udrih had struggled in the first quarter, Porter made the key decision to use Robinson for the entire second half, a move that would turn out to be crucial to the game’s outcome.
 That’s because the Nuggets stormed out of the gates to open the 3rd quarter, and quickly took a pushed their lead to double-digits once again. They were on fire from the field, and if not for the spectacular play of Robinson, the Bucks might have folded then and there. But Robinson was inspiring: he constantly attacked the Nuggets defense, even on one play trying to dunk on the Nuggets’ Kenyon Martin. Nate went in so strong that he knocked Martin down, but he missed the dunk and had to settle for a foul and hitting some free throws. :D
 Denver led by as much as 12, when the score was 68-56, but the Bucks went on an 11-0 run to come within 1 at 68-67. The run was capped by a Grant Hill 3-pointer from the baseline, and was finally ended by a Carmelo Anthony jumper. But the message had been sent by Robinson & the Bucks: they weren’t backing down, or going away. In fact, they took the lead by the end of the quarter, holding a 75-72 advantage heading into the final period.
 In the fourth, the tables were turned when the Bucks’ 8 point lead at 88-80 was erased by an 11-0 Nuggets run, giving Denver a 91-88 lead with about 4 minutes to go. But Robinson continued to tack on to his ever-growing assists total, and also added a driving layup to bring his total to 19 points. Dwyane Wade helped out with a 4-for-4 quarter, and the Bucks made the critical plays down the stretch to win the ballgame.

GAME NOTES
Robinson finished with 19 points, 14 assists, and 4 steals, and was named the Player of the Game, but Wade’s efforts were not to be overlooked: 23 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, 10-13 shooting (77%).

The next Bucks game will be their last of the regular season: a big-time matchup versus the Philadelphia 76ers, who currently hold the #3 spot in the East with a 19-8 record. The Bucks, at 18-10, are sitting at #4, so they might end up facing these Sixers in the first round…

Game #29: Milwaukee Bucks (18-10) @ Philadelphia 76ers (19-8)

MIL 110, PHI 104 (O.T.)

Bucks Win Overtime Thriller- Potentially Critical Game Goes Down to the Wire

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA- The Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers played a very important game last night that could affect the seeding and first round matchups of the upcoming playoffs. The Bucks came in with an 18-10 record, good for the #4 spot in the East, and the 76ers at 19-8 held the #3 seed. If the Bucks could win and improve their record to 19-10, then they would have a chance at stealing the #3 seed if Phili lost their last game and also finished with a 19-10 record. That’s because in the event of tied records in the playoff seedings, the first tiebreaker between 2 teams gives the team that won the season series over the other the higher seed. So since this was the first and only game the Bucks were facing the 76ers, they HAD to win the game to have a shot at the #3 seed.
Phili knew this too, and played like it right off the bat. They were extremely aggressive, aided by the thunderous cheering of their loyal fans. Center Samuel Dalembert started his assault on the boards, grabbing 7 in the quarter alone  , and Andre Iguodala (10 points on 5-for-5 shooting) and Hidayet Turkoglu (8 points) lead the offensive charge. With these efforts, the Sixers quickly built up an early 9 point lead at 22-13. Dwyane Wade’s 9 points were the only the Bucks had for Phili, as they found themselves trailing 26-19 after the first period. Milwaukee coach Terry Porter was worried, as well he should have been: his Bucks had shot just 31.8% in the quarter, had been manhandled on the boards 18-to-9, and Dwight Howard was 0-for-7 shooting  .
But things turned around for the Bucks in the second, thanks to the team finding a hot hand in reserve PF Robert Traylor. Traylor bulled his way to 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting  , and added 3 assists and 2 rebounds too. Outside threat Kareem Rush also stepped up for the Bucks, scoring 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting, including draining 2 threes, grabbing 4 boards, and dishing out a pair of assists. These two carried the Bucks to completely erase the 76ers’ lead, and rally so far as to put Milwaukee ahead by 10, 44-34. The lead didn’t last, though, as Philadelphia immediately answered with a 7-0 run to come within 3 at 44-41. Then, after a Traylor basket, Phili went on a 5-0 run, and with a Turkoglu 3-pointer tied the game back up at 46-46. Bucks coach Terry Porter had seen enough, and he called a timeout and inserted all of his starters back into the ballgame. Thanks to them the Bucks held a 50-48 lead at halftime.
The score stayed close in the third quarter, as both teams stuggled to establish the offensive and defensive consistency needed to take control of the game. Dalembert was once again crashing the boards hard, too hard for Coach Porter’s liking, so he put Dwight Howard in at center, a move that would turn out to be critical in the game. Wade was clicking with a 4-for-5 quarter, and the Bucks still held the lead heading into the fourth quarter, 72-71.
For the majority of the fourth period, Porter went with a strong lineup of Howard at center, Traylor at the 4, Grant Hill at the 3, Wade at the 2, and Nate Robinson playing the point. With it, the Bucks took an 80-75 lead, and kept a small advantage for most of the period. At the 1:40 mark they lead 90-87, but then the Sixers scored 5 unanswered points to go up 92-90. It was another three-pointer by Turkoglu that gave them the lead, and caused the fans to go wild in their seats. But Dwyane Wade answered with a quick score to tie it at 92. Allen Iverson followed with a basket to put Phili up again, and after both teams missed on consecutive possessions, Wade penetrated into the lane and scored on a reverse layup in heavy traffic. That nifty basket tied the ballgame once again at 94-94, now with 29.7 seconds left. The 76ers burned some time off the clock, then turned to Iverson. AI burned Robinson to the hole, got off a short shot…MISS! Dalembert got yet another offensive rebound, and put it back up…MISS! The ball got knocked back out, and the Sixers found Iverson WIDE open for a 17-footer at the buzzer…MISS! Bucks coach Terry Porter let out a huge sigh of relief, and went about preparing his team for overtime.
Porter told his players in the huddle after the 4th quarter, “We’ve got this game, we’ve got his game guys, come on! Somebody needs to crash the boards here, we’re getting walloped on the glass, and also someone’s got to step up and score for us now. We’ve come too far now to give up- let’s win this game…
That’s exactly what the Milwaukee Bucks did. Dwight Howard simply went to work on Samuel Dalembert- dunking on him on the first possession of OT, then scoring again on the next, and soaring high to snatch rebounds that Dalembert would have eaten up earlier in the game. In the overtime period, Howard had 8 points and 4 rebounds, while the entire 76ers team managed 10 points and 2 rebounds. Add the unceasing efforts of Dwyane Wade, who was 4-for-5 in OT, and the Bucks ran up a 110-104 lead. Only Howard and Wade scored for Milwaukee, but as has been the case for most of the season, that’s nothing new for the Bucks. The All-Star combo lead the team to their fourth straight win, and the Bucks finished this very good season with a 19-10 record. :D Now they’ll have to wait and see how the 76ers fare in their final game to determine what playoff seeding they’ll get.

GAME NOTES
Samuel Dalembert had 24 rebounds in the game, including 12 offensive boards!

Dwight Howard (19 points, 15 rebounds, 5 blocks) and Dwyane Wade (35 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists) are a combination that are going to have to be reconciled with by any team that faces the Milwaukee Bucks in the playoffs.

Oh man you beat Philly. Nice win. Webber with only 12 points and shot horrible from the field. Good job by Wade though and nice highlight. Good to see you back.

Thanks everyone. But before the playoffs, first I'll wrap up the season, and grant COOLmac's request for a 3-point shootout using the top 8 3FG% guys from the year. And no, the scribbled playoff bracket has officially been retired...

BUCKS FINAL REGULAR-SEASON REPORT
-for players averaging at least 5 minutes per game

Bowen, Ryan (3.4 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 0.6 apg, 0.7 bpg, 0.3 spg, 40.8% FGs, 23.1% 3FGs, 68.8% FTs)
In a season in which 7 of the original 12 members of the opening-day Bucks lineup were traded, Bowen has lasted the entire season. Why? Off the bench, he’s been a great defender, he’s very versatile in that he can play and guard the 3 or 4, and he’s an underrated shooter who can drain jumpers when open. The Bucks have been very pleased with this season from Ryan Bowen, and hope he can continue his steady play in the playoffs.

Divac, Vlade (4.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 0.9 apg, 0.7 bpg, 0.6 spg, 39.0% FGs, 0% 3FGs, 91.4% FTs)
Vlade has shown his age this season for the Bucks, being painfully obviously past his prime. He’s played well in stretches, and had a few games in which he was a major contributor, but his 39% field goal percentage is Gadzuric-like. Vlade’s probably going to retire after the season, and he hopes to finally get that elusive championship ring that he’s sought for years.

Ely, Melvin (3.8 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 0.2 apg, 1.0 bpg, 0.2 spg, 49.4% FGs, 0% 3FGs, 63.2% FTs)
Melvin came over with Kareem Rush in a late-season trade from the Charlotte Bobcats for Trajan Langdon, and has been a very pleasant surprise. He averaged 4.6 ppg for the Bucks, but had a pair of 14-point games and some good rebounding efforts to help win some games. His solid shooting percentage is something the coaches all appreciate.

Hill, Grant (14.7 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 5.6 apg, 0.3 bpg, 1.0 spg, 49.2% FGs, 45.5% 3FGs, 81.7% FTs)
Hill was obtained from the Orlando Magic about 2/3 through the season for Eddie Jones and Dan Gadzuric, and has not disappointed. In 9 games for the Bucks, he’s averaged 21.3 points per game, including a 37-point, 9 rebound effort against the Wizards in Game #24. His steady veteran presence and great talent will be needed for the Bucks to go far in the playoffs. The Bucks’ coaching staff isn’t worried about Mr. Hill, though.

Howard, Dwight (19.4 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 2.5 apg, 2.9 bpg, 1.3 spg, 49.1% FGs, 0% 3FGs, 89.3% FTs)
Howard has grown by leaps and bounds from his rookie season. He was named an Eastern Conference All-Star starter, and garnered MVP honors. He improved on his scoring average by 5 points per game, and also raised his field goal percentage about 5%. Dwight is still looking for some more consistency in his game, but offsets it with some monster breakout games. For example: 30 points in Game 2 versus the Warriors, a 23-point, 13-rebound, 4-block, 3-steal, 3-assist effort in a big win over the Spurs in Game 9, and a 19-point, 15-rebound, 5-block effort in the Bucks’ final game of the season, a dramatic win over the 76ers. Coach Porter and his staff are hoping for some more big games from Dwight in playoff time.

Robinson, Nate (8.9 ppg, 1.0 rpg, 5.0 spg, 0.2 bpg, 1.7 spg, 44.5% FGs, 30.2% 3FGs, 93.8% FTs,)
Nate has thrilled fans all season long with his full-throttle play, amazing slam dunks, and jitterbug quickness. Only a rookie, his averages of almost 9 points per game and 5 assists per game, as well as 1.7 steals, are superb. He started 13 games during the year, but should come off the bench in the playoffs. His offensive spark and defensive energy will be a great asset to the team and a major headache for opponents.

Rush, Kareem (6.2 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 1.3 apg, 0.4 bpg, 0.3 spg, 45.1% FGs, 25% 3FGs, 66.7% FTs)
Rush played in 12 games for the Bucks after coming over from the Charlotte Bobcats with Melvin Ely in a trade for Trajan Langdon. He proved to be a veritable three-point threat, 4 times hitting at least 2 threes in a game, and once nailing 4 from downtown. He surprised the coaching staff by showing himself to be a good all-around scorer, as well. Four times he scored in double-figures off the bench, and twice he had at least 20 points. All in all, he averaged 9.2 points per game off the bench. Coach Porter hopes to see Kareem lighting it up from downtown in the playoffs; it gives the Bucks’ offense an entire new dimension that makes them unstoppable.

Traylor, Robert (4.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.1 apg, 0.6 bpg, 0.3 spg, 42.8% FGs, 0% 3FGs, 65.2% FTs)
Robert arrived in Milwaukee via a midseason deal with the Cavaliers that sent Trenton Hassell and Reece Gaines to Cleveland. This was another trade that has panned out well for the Bucks- the “Tractor” has made a big impact in his 16 games here. Four times he’s scored in double figures, and 7 times he grabbed at least 5 rebounds. When the Tractor is rolling, there aren’t many defenders that can handle him in the low post. He could turn out to be a big positive for the Bucks in the postseason.

Udrih, Beno (7.2 ppg, 0.7 rpg, 5.2 apg, 0.2 bpg, 1.3 spg, 38.5% FGs, 35.3% 3FGs, 84.2% FTs)
Beno had an up-and-down year. His shooting percentage has been low all season long, although he’s been a pretty good 3-point shooter. Beno has been a good passer, getting a few double-digit assists games, and even had a 16-assist game and a 13-assist game. At this stage in his career, he’s still searching for consistency and refining his skills. He’s got good potential, though, and it’s no accident that he’s started the majority of games at point guard this season- he’s a good, solid PG.

Wade, Dwyane (23.1 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 5.4 apg, 1.4 bpg, 1.7 spg, 53.9% FGs, 27.8% 3FGs, 88.3% FTs)
The trade earlier in the season that brought Dwyane Wade in from the Miami Heat in exchange for Jason Terry, Desmond Mason, and Antonio McDyess was a risky one, but it’s panned out magnificently. In 22 games with the Bucks, Wade averaged 24.8 points per game, 5.9 rebounds per game, and 5.3 assists per game. He had some absolutely mammoth scoring games, including a 56-point explosion versus the Houston Rockets in Game 10. He had a 26-point quarter in that game- that’s the kind of scorer this guy can be at times. As a Buck, Wade dropped at least 30 points 5 times, and at least 20 points 15 times. “Flash” is going to be the go-to guy in the playoffs, and the burden of leading, and at times carrying, the team will fall squarely on his shoulders. Fortunately for all the Bucks fans out there, Mr. Wade is more than able.

Oh my goodness! I'm surprised at how well your team does in Rebounding. Your stats are very realistic. This is why this Franchise is probably the best in NLSC. Keep up the good work and best of luck in the Play-Offs.

It might just have to do with Live 2000. For some reason, I've always gotten realistic stats with this game, playing on 10 minute quarters. But thank you for the compliment, Sensation. Your 76ers dynasty is great too (Y)
