EUROLEAGUE GAME 1:

OLIMPIJA LJUBLJANA (SLOVENIA)OLYMPIAKOS (GREECE)

Image

The first game of the Euroleague 04-05 season saw the Greek club Olympiakos traveling north to the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana( VanK, did I spell that right? ) to face one of the perennial Euroleague contestants, the local team of Olimpija. Olympiakos’ guards Will Sit and Khalid “sac-1” Sleiman had a collision in the pre-game practice and were unavailable for coach Gezus to use in this game.

The first quarter started off rather slowly, with both teams measuring up each other’s strengths and weaknesses… 37 year old captain Makis “Dweaver” Hassakis started off very poorly, with 3 missed shots and 4 turnovesr in the first 5 minutes, but thanks to Desmond “sBHzMafia” Jackson’s perimeter shooting the Greeks went up 2-6 early in the game.

Image
Mafia hit his jumpers early in the game, but had more up his sleeve for later…

The second period featured more of Jackson’s infallible shooting, with much of his open looks being provided by passing big man Dweaver’s vision for good kickouts. Hassakis had 3 assists on offense and 2 blocks on defense by mid-quarter, while some amazing dunks by guard sensation out of Philippines Pedrajas, silenced the crowd on more than one occasion. One baseline reverse jam in particular was astonishing…

Image
This dunk by Pedrajas caused the fans to lose their breath for a couple of minutes…

Led by the all around play of Hassakis and Andrew Watson’s swagger on the boards, Olympiakos held a consistent lead into the half, with th eonly problem on defense being the surging M. Mance, Olimpija’s Power Forward, who gave Watson and Skrnjug no end of trouble finishing the half with 20 points. The score at the break was 35-41 for the Greeks.

Image
Watson was a monster on the boards, grabbing 8 in th efirst half, but had no end of trouble trying to contain his man Mance on defense…

The second half began with the Slovenian rallying and succeeding in recapturing the lead, led by sharpshooting guard Osbold. Watson was hitting the glass and D-Jax was making his open jumpers, but with no inside scoring whatsoever, the Greeks so their opponents going and remaining ahead for about 5 straight minutes. Things would remain unchanged for the duration of the third quarter, with the Slovenians up by 5, 61-56, and not only that, but both The X and Mafia had 4 fouls and had to be benched. (Keep in mind, the foul-out limit in Europe is 5 fouls. And the quarters are 10 minutes long, hence the relatively low score. Finally, there is no defensive 3 seconds violation. )

Image
Watson’s 8 point scoring streak in the 3rd quarter was disrupted by his 4th foul commited…

The fourth and final period of the game started with Olympiakos bening behind and lacking the defensive presence of Jackson and Watson. However, coach Gezus took the risk and started both of them despite the danger of fouling out. The 4th period was extremely fast paced, with both teams running the break and scoring basket-for-basket. Jackson was still flawless shooting from the perimeter, finishing the game with 5/5 2 pointers and 2/2 treys. But the real difference maker was big man Dweaver’s emergence in the end to score 15 points in the fourth, and lead his team on offense up until the final buzzer. With some help from up until that point disappeared Sam “CB4” Anurak, Hassakis [size=24]led Olympiakos to victory with a score of 84-88, but much of the credit should go to Florian Ruf’s composure from the FT line in the end, hitting 4/4 in the final minute. [/size]

Image
Sam Anurak had 4 points in the crucial late 4th quarter stretch, making up for his earlier lackluster display…

PLAYER OF THE GAME: MAKIS “DWeaver” HASSAKIS 23pts – 6rebs – 5ast – 2blk – 7 Tos – 10/14 FGs

hehe, thanks. Being Chines, you must know that to be flawlessly spelling in a Latin based language is rather difficult if your mother tongue is as different as Chinese or Greek...

i see you are sporting the short shorts.

Yup, had to show off those sculpted quadriceps...

Thanks. Yup, I kicked teh ball out to you and you never once failed me. Ofcourse, all of your jumpers were wide open, but 7/7 is still an accomplishment. I'll revert you back to the PG role once Sit's face recovers its natural color...

Following the game Coach Sean "save me gezus" Sinclair had this to say about his teams victory:

"They put up an intense fight tonight in the season opener, I lost some key players at the start of the game due to horseplay that went bad, I was pretty dissapointed. We did prevail however with some strong boards by Watson who also went 50% from the field. Jackson was perfect tonight going 7 for 7 in field goals and then pefect 2 for 2 from downtown, he was really feeling it tonight. I had to give the gameball tonight to the big man in the middle Hassakis. The man is constantly scrutinized by the media for his old age claiming that he can't deliver, but he did tonight in the opener with 23pts and 10 boards not to mention the leadership he brings to the team night in and night out...."

When asked if he felt there was anywhere he felt the team could improve on Coach Sinclair had this to say:

"To be quite honest, I was fairly dissapointed tonight with Anurak's performance, I mean playing 28 minutes with only 5 points, yea it hurts to see him out there when others might be able to contribute more. But its only the first game of the season, and I dont think he should let it get to him. Its a learning process not only for him, but also for the team and myself. Eventually everyone on the team is going to have a bad game, it just happened that his bad game was this one, luckily we had other players that could back him up and deliver..."

Coach Sinclair did not make any further comments as to what he was doing leaving the bench early in the third quarter running into the stands to chase down the hot dog vendor other than the following:

"when I gots to eat, I gots to eat..."

Sinclair and Olympiakos are now a perfect 1-0 as they prepare for their next game.

After the Game YoG! had a quick talk with the interviewer from ESPN Who had came to europe to see how many of the Old NBA players were doing in there first game. here a lil' bit from the interview they held after the game.

Q: Are you happy with the first win of the season?

A: For sure Who would'nt be happy about it?

Q: You only played 9 minutes and scored 3 points grabbed a rebound and dissed out an assist. were you happy about your first appearance in the Euroleague?

A: Well I have to say no about this one. I was happy coach Gezus gave me some playing time and I think I contributed in the win but I was unhappy he only let me play for 9 minutes. I guess I impressed him with my statics this game and maybe I can play a little bit more next game.

Q: Complaining allready? It was only the first game.

A: I know and I appreciate that the coach gave me 9 minutes but I felt like I could do some more damage to the opponent and that I could help my guys by dishing out some more assists. But this only motivates me more Next game I will play even better to prove him I am A wothy player.

Q: Who was the best today?

A: Hmmmm.. I quess it was our center Hassakis. He showed all the Press what he can do. Most of the papers said he was to old witch pissed the team up but he showed them something with that 360 he did.. Bigs up for him I hope I can do something like that in my older days.

Q:Thanks for the interview Patrick

A:Your welcome

I don't know. Looks all good to me.

Q & A's with Sam Anurak.

After the game all Asian reporters rush to the Thai Phenom Sam Anurak after his first game in Europe.

Image

Q: Sawatdee kap Sam Anurak, Are you happy on how you did today ?

A: Well in my opinion I can do way better than today's game. I am glad about the win and how my other teammates did but I am not pleased on how I did. Everyone back home has been waiting to see this day to see me play but it wasn't the best game. Maybe it was just the first game and I am trying to adapt to the atmosphere. I would also have to agree with my coach Gezus. I wouldn't blame him for his comments on how I displayed. Hopefully i can do better the next game.

Q: Don't worry. Everyone has games like this and hey it looks like you also been learning alot of English ?

A: Ye, the teammates are helping me with this and am learning a bit of what's it called ... "slang" from Desmond (laughs).

Q: Besides you who do you think had the best game ?

Everyone on this team played terrific. With Drew' having a double-double ( 14 points and 11 rebounds), Desmond with his perfect shooting night (100% 7-7), and the bench having a good game. But the person that's stands out is Makis “Dweaver” Hassakis. Despite the 7 turnovers he boucned back and ended with 23 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 blocks. He really help this team out tonight.

Q: Thank you Mr. Anurak. Sawatdee.

A: No problem. Sawatdee.

Tue Jul 19, 2005 7:45 am

yeah, nice recap, nice input from the others (Y)

here's mine...

after the reporters interviewed M. Hassakis, D. Jackson and A. Watson they found some time for F. Ruf

Reporter:
Congratulations on your first win with your new team.

Ruf:
yeah, we played great team basketball today! Playing with guys like Desmond [Jackson] and Makis [Hassakis] is so easy. It's never been easier for me to create some open shots or getting the ball in the low post. We had a great game !

Reporter:
beside good performances of Hassakis and Jackson, u had a little spotlight of your own, hitting 4 key free throws, which made the final difference.

Ruf:
you shouldn't pay that much attention on it, they were only free throws.

Reporter:
but you showed that you got solid nerves when you hit all of them.

Ruf:
it's just training... you'd better don't know what happens if the guards hit less than 80% in training, that's an aspect where the coach [Sean Sinclair] shows no mercy...

Reporter:
How's life in Greece ?

Ruf:
Way better than expected! The weather is great, there are some good places to go, when we got free time. And the team found together rapidly, last summer. There should be nothing to worry about the future.

Reporter:
OK, Flo. Thanks for the interview.

Ruf:
No prob!

Lookin forward to more of this

Lookin forward to more of this

We're on a roll... it'll keep flowing, it's just that I have to figure out some minor issues such as Sit's pink condition and sac-1's face.

BTW, the player stories are not done, they'll keep coming throughout the season. 8-)

Tue Jul 19, 2005 9:11 am

Maybe sit's cyberface has been deleted in the SGSM folder. Sometimes files get deleted. Also Sac-1 has just a created face in the game so that shouldn't be a problem. If u need help just holla.

Also when is the next game :o

Tue Jul 19, 2005 9:49 am

hopefully soon...
and i send the stuff... btw what #s are taken?
1st: 3
2nd:4
3rd:11
4th:7
5th:1

Tue Jul 19, 2005 11:45 am

Congrats on a great win Desmond, how do you feel about the first win?

I feel great, I think the team really came together and for this to be a new roster, we played very well together.

How were you able to have such a perfect night shooting 7-7 from the field for 16 points?

Well my teammates got me involved alot throughout the game and most of my shots were wide open. The defense didn't pay attention to the black guy, so I made them pay.

How do you feel about so many people from a different race on the team and you being the only full African American on the team?

Well its fun to me because I'm going to be learning alot of new languages  You can always learn something new around these group of guys and I just hope we continue growing a good friendship.

Do you think you can get a shoe deal with Jordan along with Anurak who was also wearing Jordans in the first game?

It's possible, it would really be nice if we could get a shoe deal. It'll be like a teammate thing. *IDEA* *IDEA*

Thanks for taking the time out for the interview Desmond

No probelm, anytime
