Image

Beno Udrih and Nazr Mohammed make their long awaited return to the SBC Center as they play against the Finley-less Spurs.

Starting Line-Ups

Image

Key Match-Up

Corey Maggette vs. Manu Ginobili

Which one of these quick and good scorers will win the game tonight?

1st Quarter

Both teams started the game evenly until Tim Duncan started to dominate the key and gave his team a nice 7 point lead. The Hornets started to play bit more better and got themselves within one point but some strong Spurs defence stopped them from taking the lead. The Hornets began to have lapses on the defensive end but the managed to stay within 8 points of the lead. Nick Van Exel hit 2 free throws near the end of the quarter as the Spurs finished ahead 29-23. The Hornets were yet to record an assist.

2nd Quarter

The Hornets finally recorded their first assist by Joey Graham who whipped the ball out to Jason Hart on the perimeter and he hit the open 3 and a second assist to Al Harrington which brought the Hornets within 1 point of the Spurs so the Spurs called for a timeout. Both Maggette and Mohammed were put back on the court and both of them received their 3rd personals. The Hornets continued to play well on both ends of the floor but just couldn't take the lead off the Spurs. The Spurs were on a 3 on 1 fast break with Chris Paul being the defender and the 3 Spurs players were passing it like a weave and Chris Paul managed to deflect the ball out of bounds to prevent a Ginobili dunk, great defence. The Spurs got out to a 7 point lead but Al Harrington helped his team get back within 3 points. Beno Udrih missed a buzzer-beating 3 as the Spurs finished the quarter ahead 59-54.

Key Players at the Half

Al Harrington and Tim Duncan

3rd Quarter

The Spurs shot out to a 9 point lead and the Hornets could only come in as close as 5 points and a bad coaching decision made Corey Maggette receive his 5th personal foul with 5 minutes left in the 3rd. After the foul, the Spurs shot out to a 10 point lead and looked in control of the game but Al Harrington and Chris Paul lead a strong run to get back within 3 points of the lead. The comeback was short lived as the Spurs put themselves back out to a 10 point advantage. The Spurs finished the quarter ahead 95-83.

4th Quarter

The Spurs started the quarter by extending their lead to 19 points and the Hornets were desperate so they brought back on Maggette to see if he could do something. Maggette only managed to decrease the deficit to 11 points before he was fouled out. Some nice Macijauskas shooting and other good baskets brought the Hornets back within 6 points of the Spurs with less than 3 minutes left in the game. 4 more straight points got the Hornets back within 2 points of the Spurs with less than 1:50 to go. Tim Duncan hit a shot and then the Hornets called for a timeout and then the Spurs stole the ball of the Hornets and then Duncan got fouled and only made 1 free throw then the Hornets got the ball down the court and Macijauskas missed the shot but Al Harrington rebounded the ball and layed it in to bring the deficit to 3 points with 1:09 left in the game. Bruce Bowen hit a basket and the Hornets missed and then Parker went to the free throw line and scored so the Hornets called a timeout. Macijauskas hit the 3 to get within 4 points of the lead with 26 seconds left in the game. The Hornets ended up running out of time as the Spurs won this game 121-117.

1st Quarter

The Mavericks came out determined to get the Hornets into foul trouble and the Hornets did as they picked up 4 fouls in the first 80 seconds of the match but the Mavericks failed to capitalize on the opportunity to take a nice lead as Chris Paul kept his team in the game. Corey Maggette was put onto the court and he provided some nice scoring but the Mavericks had the small advantage as both teams failed to play strong defence allowing easy hoops. The Hornets kept attacking the Maverick's lead and eventually got the lead for the first time with a Chris Paul 3 pointer. Both teams started to play sloppy but it was the Mavericks who were scoring and then went out to a 3 point lead but a buzzer beating dunk from Bass reduced the Mavericks lead to 27-26 at quarter time.

2nd Quarter

The Hornets came out and took the lead but the Mavericks played well to get it back almost instantly. Dirk Nowitzki was put on to the court and then it became a shootout between Corey Maggette and Dirk Nowitzki. Key Players at the Half

The Hornets were on fire as they couldn't miss but their sloppy defence prevented them from going further ahead. The Hornets stayed strong as they finished the quarter ahead 88-84, this game is leading to an exciting finish.

4th Quarter

Both teams came out this quarter with one thing on their mind, to win. The Mavericks managed to get their score even with the Hornets score as the momentum was starting to become theirs. Stackhouse and Diop helped their team get out to a 4 point lead but Maggette scored a nice fadeaway to get the Hornets within 2 points and the Mavericks called timeout with 3 minutes left in the game. Some bad decisions on both ends of the floor for the Hornets caused the Mavericks to go out to a 6 point lead with 1:44 left in the game. Arvydas Macijauskas hit 2 3 pointers in a row to bring the deficit to 2 points with 14.6 seconds left in the game. There wasn't enough time for a Hornets comeback as the Mavericks took this 110-106.

Recap of December by Jugs

Whew, what a great December it was. The Hornets went from one of the worst teams in the NBA to a team that could pretty much make the play-offs. GM Igor Skrnjug made some great trade moves which made the team stronger and certainly a play-off contender, even though there are still 54 games left in the season, the Hornets have definitely turned their season around quite significantly. The only problem for the Hornets is that they are last in the strongest division of the league with a 0.500 record. The top 4 of their division are in the top 6 of the Wester Conference. The Hornets are currently ninth in the Western Conference, behind the Trailblazers who have a 15-15 record.

MVP Candidates

Here are the MVP Candidates, the surprise candidate is Andrei "AK47" Kirilenko, he's managed to prevent injuries and average nice block, steals and rebound numbers, even though his team last in the league.

Corey Maggette: Equal 10th in Free Throws Made (124), Equal 15th in Free Throws attempted (147)

Latrell Sprewell: 3rd in 3 Point Per Centage (0.522%)
Arvydas Macijauskas: Equal 1st in Free Throw Per Centage (1.000%)

Hornets fans everywhere are happy what Igor Skrnjug has done with a team who's hometown was tarnished by Hurricane Katrina. Look for this team to continue being a threat to win games and make the play-offs.

Merry Christmas, Jugs.
