Pistons basketball player dies during game

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- NBA center Elden Campbell of the Detroit Pistons died of heat stroke early Wednesday, the team said.

The 7-foot-0, 279-pound Campbell, 38, died at a park near his house, playing some street basketball with his friends.

"Elden was a blue-collar type of player who led by example with his tenacity on the court. I will always remember him sitting in the corner of the locker room after the game, spent, because he always had given it all he had. Because of that, the players respected him immensely. I will miss his friendship," Pistons player Chauncey Billups said.

His death came as dangerously hot weather continued to pose a problem for the central United States. Temperatures were expected to reach as high as 100 degrees in Detroit yesterday.

"I am deeply saddened by the news of Elden's passing. He had a profound impact on the landscape of professional basketball as a player. He also was a great teammate as well as a great friend. All the members of the Pistons family mourn his passing, and my heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Campbell family," Ben Wallace added.

In the 2004-05 season, Campbell played 40 games with New Jersey and Detroit, averaging 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds.

He averaged 10.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists in a 15-year career, with the Los Angeles Lakers, Charlotte Hornets, New Orleans Hornets, Seattle SuperSonics, New Jersey Nets and the Detroit Pistons.

"I'm very sorry to hear that Elden passed away. I've always had nothing but the utmost respect for him. My sympathies and condolences go out to his family. He will be greatly missed," Rip Hamilton said.

Rasheed Wallace said: "Elden was a loyal friend, an unselfish teammate and a quality human being. His strength and dedication lay at the core of our team. He was like a brother to me."

OMG, They Killed Elden Campbell, You Bastards!!

Thu Oct 06, 2005 9:18 pm

Wow, puzzling yet interesting twist. I liked Elden Campbell, Why??? :(

Thu Oct 06, 2005 11:08 pm

I got no problem with the twist  nothing wrong with going with a random idea that pops up....sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't....

as for the people who say thierry's a sick SOB, he just killed the guy off, it happens now and then....he'd be a sick SOB if Elden was captured and gagged and Zed had his way with him then The Gimp ate his fingers off....now that's sick....

nice work thierry (Y)

Thu Oct 06, 2005 11:15 pm

It's a little disrespectful, you could've just made up some story about how he got a very lucrative offer from a Euro team or something. But it's original and creative anyway...
Imagine what happened if Elden Campbell read this, you'd make the news...

Thu Oct 06, 2005 11:20 pm

LOL I was just reading the article on Elden Campbell, and I thought he got released.... then I saw the word "died" in the sentence. Hehe, very creative dude, I've never seen that. Great Job so far, your an Arsenal Fan right? Or just a Henry Fan? Anyway Nice work

Thu Oct 06, 2005 11:34 pm

Killing Elden, I thought it was serious for a second! Im sure he will be sorely missed. I shouldve done that with Joe Smith, except made it more tragic...! That would be a good way to get rid of him outta my dynasty once and for all :P
