This game is like one of those deals with the devil.

The Bulls got a small immediate benefit at the expense of more substantial long-term loss during their tight 98-94 squeaker over Detroit at the United Center.

The game was tight from start to finish. After the first quarter, the game was tied at 29, despite Pistons guard Chauncey Billups suffering a leg injury with 4:33 left in the first. At halftime, the Bulls clung to a 54-52 lead. Billups returned for the second half. And that's when the interesting things happened.

With 6:50 left in the third quarter and the Bulls down 59-54, Dwyane Wade suffered an elbow injury. The Bulls continued to scrap valiantly, pulling to within a point at 69-68 with 1:34 remaining in the third. That's when LeBron James also got injured.

"We've never been down two starters at the same time," said Colicky Boy. "We were definitely nervous at that point. But there was this eerie calm on our team...as if to say we weren't going to back down."

Indeed, the Bulls (74-3) got a Dirk Nowitzki basket to grab a 70-69 lead at the end of three quarters. The bench surprisingly kept the game from slipping away and with 6:04 to play in the game, James and Wade re-entered the game.

"There was no way I was going to sit and watch from the bench when I felt like I could contribute," said James, who finished with only 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. "I begged Coach to let me in, and he finally did."

"You'd have to chain me up and tie me down to keep me from playing against the world champs," agreed Wade. "I knew there was a risk of making the injury worse but we really wanted to beat the Pistons."

The game see-sawed back and forth to the very end. Wade was brilliant, powering the Bulls with 17 points in those six fourth-quarter minutes. Wade's effort kept the Pistons from ever being able to tie the game. But at the same time, the Bulls never could extend their lead beyond four points. And the Bulls paid for the big victory.

Wade was diagnosed after the game with a broken bone in his wrist and will be out for three weeks, which would include part of the first round of the playoffs. James suffered a strained calf muscle and is day-to-day.

"I'll take the heat for that," said Bulls head coach Scott Skiles. "Wade really wanted to win tonight, and obviously so did I. We made a calculated risk. It's actually possible that playing didn't make the injury worse and that Dwyane would've been out for three weeks even if he stayed on the bench the rest of the game. We'll never know."

Rasheed Wallace led Detroit (56-21) with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Wade led all scorers with 21 points.

"This game was everything everyone expected," said Bulls center Amare Stoudemire, who had 20 points and 7 rebounds. "It was a war."

"We had our chances," said Pistons center Ben Wallace, who had 16 points, 9 boards and 4 blocks. "We couldn't take advantage of LeBron and Dwyane being gone."

A reporter asked if the Bulls' starters should play less to stay injury-free heading into the playoffs.

"No," said Nowitzki, who had 14 points. "You could save everyone and then get hurt on the first play of the playoffs. But I'll leave that for Coach to decide."

"Their bench isn't that bad," said Billups, who had 17 points but only one rebound and two assists. "They made a lot of nice passes for scores."

Wade's injury made Colicky Boy shake his head.

"We just go through a stretch without Amare," he said. "Now we have to go through a stretch without Dwyane and with a limited LeBron. It'd be nice to just go one whole week with a full lineup."

Colicky Boy slams home two over Gilbert Arenas

WASHINGTON - Washington was neither wizard-like nor bullet-like Wednesday night in their Bullets throwback jerseys.

Even with injured Dwyane Wade in street clothes and with a gimpy LeBron James, the Bulls had no problem dispatching Washington 89-68 at the MCI Center.

The Bulls (75-3) got a game-high 29 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists from Amare Stoudemire; 21 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists from James, and a triple-double from Colicky Boy (18 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals, and 7 assists) in a game that the Bulls led by 24 points most of the game. No comeback by Washington in this game.

Larry Hughes led the Wizards (38-39) with 14 points. Gilbert Arenas was held to 12 points.

"We're competing for a playoff spot," said Hughes, who committed 7 turnovers. "We'll have to put this game behind us quickly."

"We missed a lot of easy shots," said Bulls head coach Scott Skiles. "We need to shoot better."

"We survived without Amare," said Nowitzki, who only had 8 points. "Now we have to roll up our sleeves without Dwyane."

James had an uncharacteristic six turnovers but refused to blame the injury for contributing to the turnovers. "Just gotta take better care of the ball," James said. "Sometimes you have nights like that."

lol... well, when you play 82 games and face the same teams several times, seeing some diff'rent jerseys makes the games less monotonous

Final Four games of the regular season:

* Orlando (35-43; fighting for a playoff spot)
* Atlanta (20-58; jockeying for more lottery balls)
* New York (30-50; who knows what they're doing)
* Indiana (50-31; one of the top playoff seeds)

Then I'll do a regular season recap...and then the playoffs, baby!!!

Thu Aug 11, 2005 5:25 pm

Headlines, I mean, when you win all the time. I mean "Bulls eat Grizzlies (or Nuggets)", Bulls need no Magic, Bulls not caught by Nets...

Maybe it's not that hard with a franchise name like Bulls.

ahh....Melanie....I think we all could use someone like her by our sides  the ESPN site is awesome 8-)

well, sometimes something happens in the game so i'd use that for a headline instead of the routine "bulls cut down nets" or whatever. but sometimes nothing unusual happens so i have to use a boring headline. not easy...

kobelive2005 wrote:ok, if your always winning with a blow-out, why dont you try my sliders, i'm not braggin about it, i just wanted to help.... try it.... here it is:

well, i tried your sliders with only two modifications (FTs, cuz i suck at it big-time; and on-ball defense assist, which i personally like higher for when my guy blows past me). although i lost by three, i liked the results EXCEPT for three things:

- dunk vs layup frequency is waaaaaay too low. i have some big-time dunkers and even though they have a clear path to the hoop, they'll lay it up instead. that's just not realistic (N) .
- lay up percentage is waaaaaaay too low. maybe it's just my players, but i've got some of the best finishers in the league on my team and at one point, they must have blown 15 layups in a row. it kept the score close, which is fun, but it's just not realistic either when lebron, dwyane and amare can't finish 15 layups in a row (it's actually more than 15...i stopped counting after that). missing a few is understandable but this was ridiculous
- interception ability for the cpu is waaaay too high. andrew's slider for cpu interception ability is dead-on.... total steals come out to between 7-10, which is what the real-life nba average is. but this slider resulted in 20 total steals, which is supernatural :D

i'll try these sliders with the above three sliders swapped out for andrew's versions and we'll see if that's more realistic. thanks

Stoudemire has something emphatic to say

This time, the Bulls were missing their point guard too.

In the Bulls last game against potential first-round playoff opponent Orlando, the Magic were without point guard Steve Francis while the Bulls were at full-strength.

With Dwyane Wade out with a broken foot and with Francis still out, both teams were missing their starting point guard. But the result was still the same as the Bulls beat Orlando 94-84 at the United Center.

Amare Stoudemire scored a game-high 29 points with 5 rebounds to lead the Bulls (76-3). Colicky Boy had 21 points, a game-high 8 rebounds and a game-high 9 assists. Dirk Nowitzki added 18 but LeBron James was held to 15.

"[The lack of scoring] doesn't bother me," James said. "The team is winning and I'm contributing. If I was concerned about my numbers, you should tell me to go find the real LeBron because the real LeBron isn't selfish."

Dwight Howard, Grant Hill and Jameer Nelson each scored 14 points for the Magic (35-44).

"Our playoff chances took a hit tonight," said Howard, who also grabbed 5 boards. "We're going to have to step it up over the next three games if we want to get in."

The lackluster game did have one notable moment: Colicky Boy nailed a half-court shot at the halftime buzzer.

"That's a five-point shot, right?" Colicky Boy joked. "No? Man, I was robbed!"

ATLANTA - Goliath took on two meanings at Philips Arena.

First, it referred to the Bulls' monstrous 76-3 record in their first season under GM Melanie's architecture.

Second, it referred to Amare Stoudemire's stature as he pounded home 43 points to help lead the Bulls to an easy 106-82 pasting of Atlanta.

"The guys just keep feeding me, so I had to do something with it," said Stoudemire.

LeBron James and Colicky Boy each scored 18 for the Bulls (77-3), with James adding 4 rebounds and 8 assists while Colicky Boy added a game-high 11 rebounds and a game-high 9 assists.

"They have a good young team," said Dirk Nowitzki, who had 10 points and 5 rebounds. "Plus with their lottery pick this year, they have a chance to be pretty good in a few years."

Al Harrington led the Hawks (26-59) with 16 points.

"We hope to someday be as good as they are," said Atlanta's Josh Smith, who had 14 points.

"They're tough," said Atlanta guard Josh Childress. "We used our slingshot but we missed. But at least we used it."
