SPURS HAND LAKERS WORST LOSS OF THE SEASON

They were getting limited minutes during the preseason, despite showing good stuff during scrimmages. Yet during the regular season, they were traded. At first they were bitter about it, then they seemed as if the trade was better for them.

It is the first time since Robert Horry was traded for Brian Cook and Jumaine Jones that the Los Angeles Lakers are involved with the San Antonio Spurs. Robert Horry said he wasn't out for any sort of revenge against his former team the Spurs. However, this wasn't the case for Jones and Cook.

Jones and Cook provided significant numbers to help the Spurs cripple the Lakers, 103-77 at the SBC Center. Jones had 8 points and 8 rebounds while Cook had 4 points and 8 rebounds.

Manu Ginobili led the Spurs in scoring with 25 points (2-of-6 from downtown), Michael Finley had 20, Tony Parker had 14 points and 7 assists while Tim Duncan had 10 points and 7 rebounds.

"No it wasn't a struggle," Duncan said of the game he played.

The Lakers were again led by Kwame Brown, who had 24 points and 15 rebounds. However the Lakers as a team shot 30-of-88 and turned the ball over 17 times as compared to only 6 for the Spurs.

Horry scored 13 points.

LA will get 1 week off before facing Dallas. Rookie Von Wafer is expected to suit up for that game as he is almost fully recovered from his injury.

Brown, Wafer's career nights counter Nowitzki's 40

Kwame Brown's skill and passion showed up this season, Von Wafer returned to the Lakers' lineup, and through their inspired play, in return, a win was earned by LA.

Brown had 31 points and 20 rebounds, both career highs, and Wafer returned played his 1st game since returning from injury and put up 24 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks to lead the Lakers to a 120-112 overtime victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

LA was down 75-70 entering the 4th quarter, but the cameback and finished the game using their new favorite weapons-the alley-oop, which is why the assist total is always high, as well as the 3-man standard fast break.

LAKERS END ROAD TRIP ON SHORT NOTE

At haltime, while the Lakers were in the locker room and down by 11, coach Phil Jackson dared them to shoot, since its what they've been wanting to do. And shoot they did. The Lakers came back in the second half, but fell short, literally, as the Milwaukee Bucks escaped for a 94-92 victory.

Lamar Odom's wide open jump shot fell short in the end, and Kwame Brown's tip in was waved off.

LA shot 11-of-31 from downtown, setting the record this season for most made and attempted.

Kwame Brown scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, leading 6 Lakers, the only Lakers who scored, in double figures.

The Lakers finally head home after this game to face the Chicago Bulls.

NOTES
Rookie center Andrew Bynum was fouled after going up for a dunk in the 2nd quarter. He will miss 2 weeks of playing time, team doctors said. Slava Medvedenko is most likely to be Chris Mihm's backup. Guard Tony Bobbit was activated from the injured list following the game.

TNT: WE KNOW DRAMA, THE LAKERS SURELY SHOWED IT IN HORRY'S HEROICS IN LA's 2ND HOME GAME
Lakers comeback in 4th to force OT

After an 8-game road trip, the LA Lakers were happy to be back at the Staples Center. And after the game, fans were glad to see them, especially Robert Horry. Horry forced overtime with a 3-pointer and won the game with a free throw with 0.9 seconds left for a 135-143 win in the Lakers' 2nd home game of the season.

The Lakers were urged by coach Phil Jackson to shoot with confidence. They shot 2 more 3-pointer than they did in their game against the Bucks, and made 3 more than that game, shooting 14-of-33. They are averaging 30 three pointers attempted, making around 12. They are attempting 10 more shots than they did before the Bucks game, making 10 more.

"I guess we needed to shoot more," Lamar Odom joked.

LA was coming off a 94-92 setback in Milwaukee that broke their hearts. Seeing the LA fans again brought confidence in the players, and it clearly showed on the court. Brown gave LA fans their first live glimpse of what he's been doing during the road trip with 32 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks while Lamar Odom finally showed up with 28 points and 13 assists. Three more Lakers scored in double figures, including Horry.

Kirch Hinrich scored 28 of his 32 points after halftime to lead the Bulls. Their entire starting 5 scored in double figures.

The Lakers were down 109-106 before Brown fed Horry the ball and hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 8.2 seconds remaining. In overtime, as the game was tied, Horry stole an inbounds pass and went all the way in, only to be fouled. He then split his free throws with 0.9 seconds left. Mike Sweetney's half-court shot did not count.

LA goes on the road to face the Chicago Bulls again before coming back home.

DIFFERENT LOCATION, SAME RESULT

This was Chicago-LA Part 2. Now usually sequels are not as exciting as the original. But this is an exception.

Kirch Hinrich's 3-pointer forced overtime but in the extra session, Von Wafer hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to help the LA Lakers beat the Chicago Bulls again, 134-126. Robert Horry's free throws sealed the game.

Horry led the way with 24 points, shooting 8-of-13 from the field, while Devean George had 23 points, and Chris Mihm had 22. Von Wafer had 19 points.

The Lakers sweep the season series against Chicago.

TNT: INSIDE THE NBA
Kenny Smith and Stuart Scott discuss the Aaron McKie trade, as well as the Lakers' rotation and depth chart.

Image

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak wrote:We have talked to a lot of other teams, talking about our request for a point guard, and, after seriously discussing with the New Jersey Nets, they have given this reply:

Image

Stuart Scott: Well, they finally got a point guard. What does Jeff McInnis bring to this Lakers team?

Kenny Smith: He brings athleticism to the Lakers. He's a solid point guard, averaging 7 points per game, he's fast, can take you off the dribble. He was scored 10 points against the Lakers.

Image

Stuart Scott: Good point, Kenny. What I want to know is, will he fit in the triangle offense?

Kenny Smith: I think he will. But the Lakers are also running that standard 3-man fast break, where McInnis will really fit into. The thing is, though, with the McKie trade, and Kobe Bryant about to come back, how is their rotation planned out? They have to fix their rotation.

Stuart Scott: Yeah Von Wafer played a lot of point guard with McKie still in the lineup but now that the Lakers have a true point guard in McInnis, it's either Wafer will play behind McInnis or play reduced minutes behind Kobe Bryant.

Kenny Smith: Well, Wafer is really a shooting guard, but played a lot of point guard. But the Lakers do have a backup point guard in Sasha Vujacic.

Stuart Scott: They still have that logjam at small forward. Lamar Odom, Devean George, Laron Profit and Luke Walton are all small forwards on this team. I've gotten word that the Lakers have been in talks of trading Luke Walton for a big man, who they don't have.

Kenny Smith: This analysis is going nowhere, Stuart, we'll position-wise, i can give you the Lakers' depth chart:

C-Chris Mihm
-Andrew Bynum
-Slava Medvedenko
PF-Kwame Brown
-Robert Horry
SF-Lamar Odom
-Devean George
-Luke Walton
-Laron Profit
SG-Kobe Bryant
-Von Wafer
-Tony Bobbit
PG-Jeff McInnis
-Sasha Vujacic

They do not want Von Wafer getting reduced minutes behind Kobe, since he proved excellent 3-point shooting and energy.

Stuart Scott: Well, this discussion will go on as the season progresses and when the Lakers get back to full strength.

Kenny: Okay tonight from Staples Center the Lakers, at 6-6, coming off 2 wins against the Bulls play longtime nemisis the Portland Trailblazers, who are at 5-9 and coming off 2 blowout losses against the Pistons and Kings respectively.

Stuart Scott: Tonight, 7:30 PT on TNT. Enjoy the game!

"HORRY FOR THE WIN, YES!"

Lakers go over .500 for the 1st time this season

Robert Horry received the inbounds pass with 1.8 seconds left and let fly a game-winning 3-pointer for a thirlling 114-111 win over the Portland Trailblazers.

Horry finished with 18 points, as 5 Lakers scored in double figures.

Jeff McInnis made his Lakers debut, only to get injured. With a back-to-back at Miami and at Orlando, the Lakers will be hard-pressed to win. However, LA expects to be at full strength at week's end.

Next up for LA is the Miami Heat, which was supposed to be Shaq-Kobe III. But since both are out due to injury, that'll have to be delayed for another month.

INJURY NOTES:
Jeff McInnis will be out 5 days, coming back during the weekend. Kobe Bryant will be returning to the roster during the weekend. Andrew Bynum is expected to return soon.
