Player Presentation:
SAM “CB4” ANURAK
Undoubtedly the best basketball player ever to come out of the country of Thailand, the 21 year old Anurak has often been heralded as the Thai Jordan, due to his sheer dominance of all local competition and his impressive athletic skills. Sam was born and raised in Bangkong, and from the tender age of 5, began playing basketball in his makeshift basketball court at home… Few people even knew of the sport there, though, with not much of an organized team or league to sustain his immense talent, especially after Sam hit his early teens…
Sam’ second love was Thailand’s traditional contact sport, Muai Tai , a local version of what westerners refer to as ‘full contact kick boxing’ , with the exception that the usage of knees is allowed. Anurak was a teen champion and found himself competing in tourneys all around the world, ranking many victories and medals… But still, basketball was his first and true love, and in order to find the way for his dreams to come true, he moved to the States on an athletic scholarship at the age of 18, and signed a letter of acceptance to play for the perennially overachieving mid-major college of Gonzaga.
Standing at 6’ 5” and weighing in about 210 pounds, Sam was not exactly the prototypical size for his favorite position, Small Forward, but his explosiveness, quick first step, jumping ability and long arms made up for much of his size deficiencies. As a freshman during the 2002 season, Sam did not play much but had the chance to adapt to the American system and finally go up against some serious opposition, even if only in practice. In Anurak’s sophomore season, he found himself an important part of the team’s rotation, ending the year with satisfactory averages of 9.9 ppg , 5.1 rpg and 2.1 apg. Third year was the charm, though, as Sam was a bona fide star and starter for the team, playing alongside great talents Adam Morrison and Ronny Turiaf during his junior season in 2004. This impressive trio led the Zags to a fantastic 28-5 record, a place in the National Tournament and a subsequent Tourney run all the way to the final 8.
Anurak’s number’s that year were great. 16.1 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.1 bpg… His name was being heard throughout college basketball and beyond, especially after his best game in the states took place in the Sweet Sixteen Round of the Tournament, where he trashed the Kansas Jayhawks filling up his stat sheet with 32 points, 14 rebounds and 9 assists, including the improbable half court heave that gave his team the victory 89 – 87 and made it as CNN’s ‘play of the day’…
NBA scouts were raving, and Sam proceeded to declare for the 2004 draft… He hired a compatriot of his as an agent though, which, along with the fact that an early summer injury while competing in some K1 qualification tournaments in Japan did not allow him to participate in individual workouts, hurt his stock so bad that he wound up being undrafted… A pro offer did not take long to come, though. Greek Giants Olympiakos offered him a two year deal worth 300.000 $ per annum, and Sam readily accepted… Will the Euroleague be Sam’s stepping stone back to the United States and the NBA? Or will contact sports prove to be the better career option? Stay tuned, and find out…
