2000-2001 Season preview

Last season Lakers beat the Pacers in the finals with Shaq and Kobe capturing their first championship. It could be one for many for the dynamic duo. One night away of the season tipoff, let's look at some of the teams in the league:

Boston Celtics:
The Celtics have a good starting lineup with Paul Pierce, Antoine Walker and Jerome Moiso. The duo of Pierce and Walker have to bring it early since the teams bench can't provide much firepower, althought they have some good role players in Tony Battie, Adrian Griffin and Walter McCarty.

Charlotte Hornets:
Will Baron Davis erupt this season? That might be the question that defines Charlotte's success this season since the roster isn't among the best in the league. Jamal Magloire is going to bring some production inside, while Jamal Mashburn and Damon Wesley will bring outside shooting.

Chicago Bulls:
As one of the most interesting teams entering this season, Chicago has the potential to surprise anyone. Althought their bench is weak, they have a strong all-around starting lineup of Brad Miller, Elton Brand, Ron Artest, Jamal Crawford and Bryce Drew.

Dallas Mavericks:
Dallas is pretty solid in every aspect but the faith of the team lies on the shoulders of Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley and Steve Nash.

Indiana Pacers:
If Jermaine O'Neal comes out like he should, the Pacers could be in for a monster season. The team begins the season with high hopes for O'Neal, Reggie Miller and Jalen Rose.

Los Angeles Clippers:
It finally seems like the Lakers are going to get some competition from their hometown rival. The Clippers are going to be a fun team to watch with Lamar Odom, Corey Maggette, Darius Miles, Earl Boykins, Quentin Richardson and Jeff McInnis.

Los Angeles Lakers:
A repeat is more than possible for LAL. The duo of Kobe and Shaq should and will continue their domination from the start of the season. LA also sports a strong supporting cast, for example Horace Grant, Devean George, Robert Horry and Isaiah Rider.

Miami Heat:
Is this the year Miami will take over? If Alonzo Mourning keeps dominating the post, it could be a long playoff run. The team is expecting a strong season for rising swingman Ricky Davis and starters Eddie Jones and Tim Hardaway. They also have some great role players in Bruce Bowen, Eddie House and Anthony Mason.

Milwaukee:
The Bucks have a frightening backcourt of Ray Allen, Sam Cassel, Michael Redd and Rafer Alston. Glenn Robinson and Tim Thomas should provide inside scoring.

New York:
New York looks to it's three biggest stars; Latrell Sprewell, Allan Houston and Marcus Camby to lead them to the finals again like 1999. Help should come in their strong bench: Larry Johnson, Kurt Thomas, Glen Rice.

Orlando:
Orlando's success depends on the duo of Grant Hill-Tracy McGrady.

Philadelphia:
Allen Iverson has now a supporting cast of Theo Ratliff, Nazr Mohammed, Eric Snow, Aaron McKie, Jumaine Jones and Speedy Claxton. It could be a great season in Philly if things start clicking.

Portland:
Portland has one of the most solid rosters of the league. Rasheed Wallace leads the pack with Arvydas Sabonis, Scottie Pippen, Steve Smith, Damon Stoudamire, Dale Davis, Shawn Kemp and Bonzi Wells.

Sacramento:
Offence is the name of the game here but don't think they will let you easy on the other end... Sacramento's starting lineup at the moment: Vlade Divac, Chris Webber, Predrag Stojakovic, Doug Christie, Jason Williams.

San Antonio:
Champs in 1999, the Spurs are looking to reclaim their spot at the top of the league, lead by the Twin Towers, David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Youngsters like Malik Rose and Anthony Daniels are bringing some needed support from the bench.

Seattle:
Gary Payton's team is looking forward to a good season with Vin Baker, Rashard Lewis, Desmond Mason, Ruben Patterson and Brent Barry.

Utah Jazz:
Is the duo of Karl Malone and John Stockton finally getting too old? We will see that soon. In the meantime newcomer DeShawn Stevenson looks to rock the rims in Utah.

Vancouver:
Vancouver could be a surpriser with Stromile Swift, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Michael Dickerson and Mike Bibby.

Knicks beat Raptors in a scoring frenzy
New York's inside game too much to handle

Player Of The Game - Marcus Camby

Starting Lineups
Toronto Raptors - New York Knicks

C: Michael Olowokandi - Marcus Camby
PF: Antonio Davis - Kurt Thomas
SF: Vince Carter - Latrell Sprewell
SG: Morris Peterson - Allan Houston
PG: Mark Jackson - charlie Ward

Both teams wanted to start the season with a win. It was clear from the start that this game would be a high scoring one.

1st Quarter:
New York's inside game surprises the Raptors but the game is played close after the first 5 minutes.

2nd Quarter
Marcus Camby dominates on both ends and Toronto does a bad job protecting the ball, althought they get good production all around the court and manage to the tie the game at the half, 49-49.

3rd Quarter
Toronto keeps turning the ball over and Marcus Camby continues his strong play. Vince Carter starts to hit big shots and the score is kept close.

4rd Quarter
The last quarter New York catches fire offensively and there's nothing Toronto can do but hang on. Knicks win the game in the last quarter while Toronto's offense can't answer.

Game Analysis:
Toronto got outplayed in every category except blocks. New york did a great job rebounding.

Player breakdown:
Michael Olowokandi was a defensive powerhouse with 20 rebounds and 10 blocks. Carter poured in 36 points and the bench producted well.
New York did better and in addition to Camby, Allan Houston and Kurt Thomas scored double digits.

Top Performers:
Toronto: Vince Carter - 36pts, 6rebs, 6blks, 2asts
New york: Kurt Thomas - 24pts, 17rebs, 6stls, 2asts

Player Of The Game - Antoine Walker

Starting Lineups
Boston - Toronto

C: Tony Battie - Michael Olowokandi
PF: Jerome Moiso - Antonio Davis
SF: Antoine Walker - Vince Carter
SG: Paul Pierce - Morris Peterson
PG: Kenny Anderson - Mark Jackson

This would be Toronto's first home game of the season. After a loss to New York, Boston seemed like an easier opponent. Both teams expected much from their main scorers, Vince Carter and Paul Pierce.

1st Half:
Antoine Walker began strong with the game's first four points, steal, block and rebound. Both teams had problem with each other's defensive pressure and that resulted in many steals. Boston crashed the offensive boards and got easy second chance points. Paul Pierce struggled while Vince Carter took advantage of Walker's early fouls and got his share of first half points. Boston was killing Toronto with it's rebounding in both ends and eventually it took the lead in the 2nd quarter. At the end of the half Antonio Davis and Morris Peterson hit some big shots to put Toronto ahead again.

2nd Half:
Paul Pierce remained cold while Antoine Walker poured in 11 points in the 3rd quarter. Carter also continued his solid point production. In the last quarter Toronto lead by 10 points but Boston rallied all the way back fueled by intensive rebounding on both ends. The visiting team took the lead with a minute left and Toronto couldn't score after that.

Game Analysis
The game was pretty sloppy, both teams had too much turnovers. Toronto got whooped on the glass, it seemed like Davis and Olowokandi couldn't contain Boston's forwards. Toronto did contest most shots and that resulted in huge amount of blocked shots.

Player Breakdown
Carter scored 32 and Peterson added 20 but no-one else stood up for the Raptors that seemed to lack offensive post presence in this game. Boston however got stellar performances from Walker, Battie and Moiso. Paul Pierce scored 19 but remained pretty quiet through first three quarters.

Top Performers:
Toronto: Vince Carter - 32pts, 7rebs, 9blks, 3asts, 2stls
Boston: Antoine Walker - 22pts, 9rebs, 3asts, 2blks, 2stls

Game Leaders:
Points: Vince Carter (TOR) - 32
Rebounds: Tony Battie (BOS) - 18
Assists: Michael Olowokandi (TOR) - 8 !!!

Top-Left: Tony Battie slams it.
Top-Right: VC goes high up for the jam.
Bottom-Left: Jerome Moiso had a great game with lots of results downlow.
Bottom-Right: VC slams it on Moiso.

Picture of the day: This time Vince Carter ended on the wrong end of the poster.

Next Game
Toronto will meet the Lakers at home. The first real test of the season is going to be a tough one, it will need a complete team effort to hold the duo of Kobe and Shaq.

Probable starters for Los Angeles Lakers:
C - Shaquille O'Neal
PF-Horace Grant
SF-Devean George
SG-Kobe Bryant
PG-Derek Fisher

Mon May 22, 2006 1:11 am

I don't think you have a trouble scoring at the post. Judging from Kandiman's assists from the past two games, I guess you tend to play an inside-outside game where you pass the rock to Kandiman and then kick out to the open man if the defense reacts. You're just too much of a wuss to take it strong to the hole. :P
Quit settling for those kickouts and make Kandi score.

Mon May 22, 2006 6:06 pm

Haha you were right, I like to give the ball to the big men and let them dictate the pace. I get a lot of easy jumpers that way. Davis is good enough to convert those situations into baskets as well downlow but Olowokandi misses everything  even hookshots, althought last game was 3-5 for him, not bad. I guess most of them was easy dunks. I could use another scoring center/power forward though. Any suggestions?

Mon May 22, 2006 7:41 pm

great dynasty keep it up. but my bad for bothering you for those patches for 2001 i got 06 now.

Mon May 22, 2006 8:22 pm

Well actually I couldn't find the patches I had, seems like all the patches I have are installed in my game. I wonder if that's all we got left of NBA Live 2001 patches

Mon May 22, 2006 8:40 pm

haah yea but i mean i could go back to live 2001 if you find the patches  because it is hard playing live on a shitty graphics card

Mon May 22, 2006 8:44 pm

Hehe, well there isn't much stuff, only jersey and cyberface patches, not like any sweat patches or street mods. I have some patches installed in my game but NO WAY am I going to extract and upload any of the fsh and viv files.

I'll probably try to beat the Lakers later tonight.

Mon May 22, 2006 9:57 pm

Bad luck with the two losses. Huge game from Camby, though his field goal attempts is unbelievable. A little bit of progress has been made in that area of NBA Live, at least. ;) Good luck in the next one, as I recall Shaq is quite a beast in NBA Live 2001.

Raptors first win of the season
O'Neal steals the show but couldn't win it

LA Lakers - Toronto : 103-110
(26-29, 29-28, 23-24, 25-29)
[ Los Angeles Boxscore ][ Toronto Boxscore ]
Player Of The Game - Shaquille O'Neal

Starting Lineups
LA Lakers - Toronto Raptors

C: Shaquille O'Neal - Michael Olowokandi
PF: Horace Grant - Antonio Davis
SF: Rick Fox - Vince Carter
SG: Kobe Bryant - Morris Peterson
PG: Derek Fisher - Mark Jackson

This game was supposed to be one of the hardest game of the season for Toronto. At first it seemed like Toronto's loosing streak would continue.

1st Half:
Toronto started the game with a 8-0 run by running and executing fast breaks. The home team also got great execution from it's forwards that caused some early foul trouble for Lakers' frontcourt. It didn't take long for Shaq and Kobe to bring LA back into the game after a sloppy start. The whole visiting team stepped up by crashing the boards and intercepting lazy passes.
Lakers seemed unstoppable on the offensive glass, especially O'Neal who played phenomenally throughout the game. On the other end Lakers tried to double the post players but Toronto kicked it outside and dropped consecutive three pointers to stay on top. At the end of the half Vince Carter had 15 points, O'Neal 19 and Bryant 11.

2nd Half
Shaquille O'Neal was straight unstoppable. Lakers continued to pound the pressure under the basket and Toronto had to rotate it's bench players due to lots of fouls called. Meanwhile Carter and Bryant were catching fire from the field. Shaquille O'Neal continued to embarrass Olowokandi on both ends with dunks and monsterous swats. Toronto managed to keep a three point lead at the end of the 3rd quarter thanks to a balanced team effort.
There was no-one that could stop Shaq tonight. Lakers played terrific defense but Toronto turned to Antonio Davis and Vince Carter to put the game away regardless of Bryant's last minute heroics.

Game Analysis:
While Lakers clearly owned the glass and inside game, Toronto showed some great signs of improvement with the ability to find the open man inside and outside the arc. It was a close game through all the four quarters. This was without a doubt Raptors' best game of the season so far. Don't get fooled by the score, there was simply nothing to do to contain Shaq. Toronto turned the ball over way too much.

Player breakdown:
Lakers were all Shaq and Kobe tonight, but it was the bench scoring that might have cost the win since their third best scorer was Derek Fisher with 10 points. The Raptors however got 33 from Carter, 20 from Morris Peterson, 15 from Antonio Davis and 13 from Kevin Willis.

Top Performers:
Toronto: Vince Carter - 33pts, 8rebs, 4blks, 4asts, 4stls
Los Angeles: Kobe Bryant - 28pts, 4rebs

Game Leaders:
Points: Shaquille O'Neal (LAL) - 39
Rebounds: Shaquille O'Neal (LAL) - 25

Kings and Webber bring Raptors down to earth
Toronto's offence nowhere to be seen

Player Of The Game - Chris Webber

Starting Lineups
Sacramento Kings - Toronto Raptors

C: Vlade Divac - Michael Olowokandi
PF: Chris Webber - Antonio Davis
SF: Peja Stojakovic - Vince Carter
SG: Doug Christie - Morris Peterson
PG: Jason Williams - Mark Jackson

After a huge win against the Lakers, Toronto faced the second game against a serious title contender. This game was not going to be easy in anyway.

1st Half:
Both teams looked to score points in the paint and plenty of fouls were called straight from the beginning. Sacramento crashed the offensive boards and put pressure on Vince Carter on the other end with Christie and Williams, as a result Toronto turned the ball over numerous times. Morris Peterson closed the first quarter with a buzzer beating 3 pointer with Toronto on top.
Chris Webber looked to dominate and he did. Toronto kept making stupid mistakes and seemed to lost their intrest at the offensive end. Stille they managed to stay in the game and trailed by four at halftime.

2nd Half
Webber and the Kings started the third with a 8-0 run and Toronto's allaround game just collapsed. Carter tried to keep his team in the game but Sacramento's lead was around 12 points the whole 3rd quarter.
The last quarter was an encore for the Kings; it started with a big tip slam by Webber. Toronto couldn't find a way to score or defend the Kings and deserved to lose.

Game Analysis:
The Raptors played well the first half but the second half was a mass murder. Sacramento ruled in every aspect and put the game away early. Toronto's offence especially was nowhere to be seen.

Player breakdown:
Chris Webber dominated with 42 points. Divac and Christie also reached double digits. Toronto however was solely on the shoulders of young Vince Carter's 38 points and that wasn't enough to hold on.

Top Performers:
Toronto: Vince Carter - 38pts, 9rebs, 1blk, 1ast, 1stl
Sacramento: Doug Christie - 14pts, 7rebs, 6stls, 2asts, 1blk

Game Leaders:

M. Peterson
J. McInnis
G. Joseph

Toronto has come up with four possible trades and is currently doing research on which trade would benefit it's team the most. Here are the possible transactions:

With Philadelphia:
Toronto gets:
Nazr Mohammed - C/PF - 77 overall
Theo Ratliff - C - 82 overall
Speedy Claxton - PG - 72 overall
Philadelphia gets:
Michael Olowokandi - C - 78 overall
Corliss Williamson - SF/PF - 75 overall
Mark Jackson - PG - 79 overall
This trade would give Toronto more size and post presence but make it weaker at point guard that would force to raise Jeff McInnis to the starting lineups.

With Seattle:
Toronto gets:
Rashard Lewis - SF - 81 overall
Shammond Williams - PG - 68 overall
Seattle Gets:
Mark Jackson - PG - 79 overall
Garth Joseph - C - 72 overall
Toronto would loose it's starting PG and a future star center but get a good scorer in Rashard Lewis and another mediocre PG in Williams.

Another trade with Seattle:
Toronto gets:
Rashard Lewis - SF - 81 overall
Shammond Williams - PG - 68 overall
Brent Barry - SF/SG - 74 overall
Ruben Wolkowyski - PG(?) - 62 overall
Seattle gets:
Mark Jackson - PG - 79 overall
Corliss Williamson - SF - 75 overall
Alvin Williams - PG/SG - 69 overall
Michael Stewart - PF - 70 overall
Toronto would get better shooters with Lewis and Barry, but loose two point guards and versatile Williamson.

With Vancouver:
Toronto gets:
Stromile Swift - PF - 78 overall
Mike Bibby - PG - 79 overall
Damon Jones - PG/SG - 73 overall
Othella Harrington - PF - 74 overall
Brent Price - PG - 66 overall
Vancover gets:
Mark Jackson - PG - 79 overall
Corliss Williamson - SF/PF - 75 overall
Alvin Williams - PG/SG - 69 overall
Kevin Willis - C - 78 overall
Dell Curry - SG/SF - 73 overall
Toronto would get two young future stars in athletic Stro Swift and quick Mike Bibby. Damon Jones would also bring some clutch shooting and Harrington some offensive scoring downlow. Toronto would loose mainly a center and a small forward.

What do you think? I will complete one of these trades today or tomorrow. Which trade would benefit my team the most? Right now I feel I'm lacking post players and shooters.

Fri May 26, 2006 6:08 am

defintiley go with vancouver because you get a lot of good potential and you cant pass up on stro and mike bibby

Fri May 26, 2006 6:15 am

I like the Vancouver trade the best (by far) out of those options, but that's alot of players involved

Fri May 26, 2006 7:04 am

yo with Vancouver

bibby : great playmaker and 3 point shooter and scorer

swift : its a great dunker and shot blocker

jones :3 point shooter

harrington: a strong PF

Price : .. with bibby and jones .. you must trade him

Fri May 26, 2006 9:48 am

I like the Philly trade or the Vancouver trade.

You're not gonna trade VC to New Jersey anytime soon are you? Especially for a couple picks?

Fri May 26, 2006 3:27 pm

Well I focus on making Toronto a contender one day  so no. I plan on keeping VC for a long time. Oh yea and luckily you can't use trade picks in Live 2001. I could get close by getting Lucious Harris and Kevin Ollie.

I like the Vancouver pick as well, but I'm very tempted with getting Rashard Lewis as well :P

Fri May 26, 2006 7:14 pm

The Seattle trades look interesting, because you could get an All-Star in return... But Rashard Lewis' game is maybe too much like Vince Carter's?

At last, in terms of realism, I think that the Lewis one is more probable: you could always imagine that he was no longer wanted in Seattle and given for "free" a la Vince Carter. The Vancouver trade is less realistic, because it's pretty hard to imagine a team giving up two future prospects for two veterans that are about to retire

Fri May 26, 2006 7:24 pm

I quite like both of the Seattle trades but the Vancouver one does stand out.

Fri May 26, 2006 8:08 pm

alexboom wrote:The Vancouver trade is less realistic, because it's pretty hard to imagine a team giving up two future prospects for two veterans that are about to retire

Even better for me. I'd really much like to have a scorer like Lewis but you can't get everybody. I'm still thinking, it's either Seattle or Vancover one.

I really should have started the dynasty with the Lakers or Blazers. In 2001 Portland has many 78 overall players that can be traded.
