Lottery Balls Fall, Knicks to Pick 8th in Draft

SECAUCUS, NJ, May 24, 2005-- In a NBA Draft characterized by widespread uncertainty, the Knicks had a 70 per cent chance to end up with the eighth pick -- and that is exactly where they will make their first selection on June 28th.

No, the lottery ping-pong balls did not fall New York’s way – but, in a draft such as this one, that may not necessarily be such a bad thing. There are no LeBron-s, Yao-s, or Dwyane Wade ’s in this draft. And, without that surefire superstar type player, the 8th pick may be as good as the third -- and the 30th and 54th selections, which the Knicks also own, could turn out to be extremely valuable as well. “This is the type of draft that’s particularly difficult for management in terms of selections,” ESPN commentator, and onetime Knick, Greg Anthony said. “It’s very hard to pick the lottery guys this year.” But if you know what you’re doing you can really score big in this type of a draft, especially with a trio of selections. You may be able to find eventual impact players relatively late -- and Knick fans will recall that President, Basketball Operations Isiah Thomas plucked the prodigiously gifted Trevor Ariza on the 43rd pick last year.

“This is a very big deal for me, representing the Knicks organization in something this great,” said Starks. “It’s a great feeling. Getting the first pick would have been tremendous fun – like Giacomo winning the Kentucky Derby. This time it didn’t work though. I think we might be looking at big men who can clog up the middle, rebound, and play defense. We definitely have a need there. Another need might be a backup for Stephon (Marbury). He plays with such intensity, he has to get a rest once on a while. And we could use some pure outside shooters as well.”

Interestingly, when all is said and done this type of a wide-open draft tends to end up as a “draft for need”, “get the best player available” draft for most teams.

Big men who may be available on the 8th pick include 7-3 Lithuanian Martynas Andriuskevicius, 6-10 Fran Vasquez of Spain, Brazilian rejection machine Tiago Splitter, and Pitt toughie Chris Taft. UConn’s Charlie Villanueva is extremely talented. Arizona’s 6-11 Channing Frye is an underrated athlete with lots of game whose value appeared to have risen of late. Georgia Tech 7-footer Luke Schenscher -- an interesting sleeper with an enormous upside who worked out for the Knicks -- may be available on the one the team’s lower selections.

New York Selects Center From Arizona No. 8 Overall & Forward From Florida No. 30
[b]Knicks Draft Channing Frye and David Lee

NEW YORK, June 28, 2005 – New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations Isiah Thomas announced today that center Channing Frye from Arizona has been drafted No. 8 overall and David Lee has been drafted No. 30 overall in the 2005 NBA Draft.

Frye, 6-11, 248-pounds, averaged 13.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.94 blocks in 133 career games at Arizona. The 22-year-old White Plains, NY-native earned First Team All-Pac-10 honors his junior and senior seasons and finished his collegiate career as the second all-time leading shot-blocker and third all-time leading rebounder in school history.

Lee, 6-9, 249-pounds, averaged 11.3 points and 6.8 rebounds in 127 career games at Florida. The 22-year-old St. Louis, MO-native earned All-SEC Second Team honors during his senior year.

New York Trades Kurt Thomas & Draft Right To Dijon Thompson to Phoenix
Knicks Acquire Richardson and Draft Rights to Robinson

NEW YORK, June 28, 2005 – New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations Isiah Thomas announced today that guard/forward Quentin Richardson, the draft rights to Nate Robinson, the 21st pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, and cash considerations have been acquired from Phoenix in exchange for forward Kurt Thomas and the draft rights to Dijon Thompson, the 54th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft.

Richardson, 6-6, 230-pounds, averaged 14.9 points and 6.1 rebounds in 79 regular season games for the Suns last season, and in addition, averaged 11.9 points in his first 15 career NBA Playoff games. Considered one of the premier three-point shooters in the League, the 25-year-old Chicago-native led the NBA in attempts with 631 and tied for the league-lead in makes with 226. In just his second appearance at the Three-Point Shootout during NBA All-Star Weekend, the five-year NBA veteran captured the title in Denver this past February. In addition, Richardson has been ranked in the top five in rebounds amongst guards in the NBA over the past two seasons.

Robinson, 5-9, 180-pounds, was drafted by the Suns after his junior year as the 21st overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft and averaged 14.4 points and 3.3 assists in 89 games for the University of Washington. The Seattle, WA-native earned First Team All-Pac-10 honors his sophomore and junior seasons.

“Welcoming Quentin and Nate to the Knicks family are more steps in the right direction for this franchise,” Isiah Thomas said. “Not only does this trade make our team younger and more athletic, but it adds a strong defensive presence to our perimeter. We think both will be perfect compliments to our existing backcourt.”

Thomas, 6-9, 235-pounds, completed seven seasons in New York and finished his Knicks career as the franchise’s ninth all-time leading rebounder with 4,183. The 33-year-old Dallas-native averaged 11.5 points and a career-high 10.4 rebounds in 80 games (all starts) and was just one of 11 players to average a double-double during the 2004-05 season.

“I am sorry to see Kurt Thomas leave New York because we all know what he has meant to this franchise,” Thomas said. “He was one of our toughest frontline players this past season, but this trade is just one step in a large plan to improve this team.”

Knicks Name Larry Brown as Head Coach

NEW YORK, July 28, 2005 -- New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations Isiah Thomas announced today that Hall-of-Famer Larry Brown has been named the franchise’s 22nd head coach in the team’s 59-year history. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

He has made every team he has ever coached a winner, with a legendary approach to teaching and motivating his players. His value to us as a franchise at this time is immeasurable.”

Free Agent Center Comes To New York
Knicks Sign Jerome James

NEW YORK, August 2, 2005 -- New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations Isiah Thomas announced today that center Jerome James has been signed as a free agent. As per club policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

James, 7-1, 280-pounds, averaged 4.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.39 blocks in 80 regular season starts for the SuperSonics last season, and in addition, averaged 12.5 points and 6.8 rebounds in 11 NBA Playoff starts. The Tampa, FL-native recorded double-figures in eight of his 11 playoff appearances, and averaged an impressive 17.2 points and 9.4 rebounds versus Sacramento in Seattle's first-round 4-1 victory.

"The Dog" Em-Barks On Another Career
Jerome Williams Announces Retirement

NEW YORK, August 17, 2005 -- Less than 48 hours after the Knicks used the NBA’s amnesty provision on veteran forward Jerome Williams, the popular “Junk Yard Dog” announced he was calling it a playing career to pursue other interests. Williams, whose intensity and effort made him a fan favorite throughout the league, played in 587 games over nine seasons, averaging 6.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

“My days as the ‘JYD’ on the court as an NBA player are over, but I am looking forward to continuing all my offcourt work and keeping a promise to the kids of New York,” Williams said. Williams met with Isiah Thomas Wednesday morning at the team offices in New York and the two discussed options for the veteran forward to keep him involved with the team. In addition to doing some scouting work and learning the business side of basketball, Williams will pick up where he left off with MSG Network in the spring, working on a broadcasting career.

Williams added that he would not have retired had the amnesty clause not been used, and that he is healthy enough to have received a few offers from teams, which he instructed his agent, Lon Babby, to respectfully decline.

Seems like for New Yorkers, the bark of the JYD may be even louder and more effective in retirement than it was during his nine NBA seasons

Thomas, Sweetney & Draft Picks Traded To Chicago
Knicks Acquire Curry and Davis From Bulls

NEW YORK, October 4, 2005 – New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations Isiah Thomas announced today that Eddy Curry and Antonio Davis have been acquired from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Tim Thomas, Michael Sweetney, Jermaine Jackson, a conditional first-round draft choice in the 2006 NBA Draft, two future second-round draft selections and the opportunity to exchange a future draft choice. According to NBA rules, the trade is contingent on all players passing their physicals.

Curry, 6-11, 285-pounds, was acquired via sign-and-trade with the Bulls. During the 2004-05 season, the four-year NBA veteran averaged 16.1 points and 5.4 rebounds, and shot 53.8-percent from the floor (393-730) in 63 games for Chicago. The 22-year-old Harvey, IL-native recorded 18 20-plus point games and six point-rebound double-doubles.

Davis, 6-9, 245-pounds, averaged 7.0 points and 5.9 rebounds in 72 games for Chicago last season. The 12-year NBA veteran also averaged 9.5 points and 6.8 rebounds in six NBA Playoff games.

Allan Houston Retires

N.Y. (AP) - [size=9]New York Knicks guard Allan Houston retired Monday, unable to recover from knee injuries that kept him out much of the last two seasons. A two-time All-Star and member of the 2000 Olympic team, Houston was one of the NBA's best outside shooters before he was slowed by chronic knee soreness. He was limited to only 70 games over the last two seasons.

"I did everything I possibly could to get back and finish my career the way I would have liked to," Houston said at the Knicks' practice facility. "My injuries just wouldn't let me do it."

The 34-year-old Houston appeared in only 20 games last season and averaged 11.9 points, his worst season since he was a rookie. He did not play in either of the team's two exhibition games.

Houston's retirement leaves Larry Brown without his top outside shooter as he begins his first season as Knicks coach. New York could use Jamal Crawford or offseason acquisition Quentin Richardson at the shooting guard spot opposite Stephon Marbury.
I thought that we would have the best backcourt in the NBA," team president Isiah Thomas said. "We never got a chance to do that."

Houston averaged 17.3 points during his 12 NBA seasons, including a career-high 22.5 in 2002-03, his last full season. He shot 40.2 percent from 3-point range.

Training Camp

Larry Brown return to New York was one of the biggest moves this offseason. Today the coach went back to work this time with his new team, the New York Knicks. With a young team and many new faces playing together for the first time, Coach Brown has his work cut out for him. When asked what he wished to accomplish in training camp the coach said he wanted to improve every single player and the team. "Our goal is to push them to where we get better as a team and as individuals. We want to be ready to play at a high level when the season starts.

Knicks huddle up to end another day of training camp.

Brown also said he was going to use the first week to see all the players and what they can bring to the team and also get them back in playing shape. Then he would go on with the teaching of his system. He said he would implement his system by how he felt the players were taking it in and applying it in practice. It will definitely be exciting seeing as the team goes through its first training camp under the Hall of Fame Coach.

Marbury/Crawford

In the first week of training the matchup to look for was between Marbury and Crawford as they were matched up as throughout the week. Said Marbury:"Jamal is extremely competetive and we were really pushing eachother other out there. It felt good to have a great first week of practice."

Curry/James

Newly acquired bigs Eddy Curry and Jerome James were the center of attention for most of training camp. Eddy Curry dominated most of the matchups but Jerome James showed nice things to the coaching staff. They will be counted on as the inside prescence.

Richardson

Another new face is Quentin Richardson. He showed the touch that made him the 3 Point champion last year and mixed it up by going inside. Richardson is excited to be part of this team despite leaving a great situation in Phoenix. "Im happy to be here and im lookin foward to what we can do as a team and with coach Brown we will definitely be much improved."

Taylor/Hardaway/Rose

Veterans Maurice Taylor and Malik Rose, who were acquired mid season last year, also went at it as they tried to compete. They are most likely going to compete for back up minutes inside. And Penny Hardaway show some flashes as he tries regain some of his form and show the coaches that he can still contribute.

Rookies

With all the buzz over Larry Brown and the new offseason acquisitionas the three rookies, Channing Frye, David Lee, and Nate Robinson, went somewhat under the radar. Brown who is known for not being too fond of rooks and rarely playing them did say that he liked their workethic and the energy they played without throughout camp.

Despite not getting much attention during training camp Rookie Nate Robinson deals with the nuisances of being a rookie as he carries the veterans bags back to the locker room.

The Knicks opened up the season at home with a loss to the Orlando Magic after falling short of an amazing comeback. They ended losing 110-108.
The Knicks started the season slow trailing by as many as 30 points in the first half. They couldnt get anything going in the first quarter as the Magic took a 10-0 lead early and finished the 1st up 32-15, despite Steve Francis sitting down with two ealry fouls. In the second it was more of the same as they continued to score at will, while the Knicks couldnt buy a basket. After two it was 66-36. With his team down by what appeared an imsermountable margin, Larry Brown decide to play his rookies. Nate Robinson, Channing Frye, and David Lee did not dissapoint. Putting on a full court press the youngster infused the team with energy and some much needed offense. The Knicks managed to cut the lead and by the ened of the 3rd it was 87-78.
In the fourth it was the veterans turn Stephon Marbury and Jamal Crawford took advantage of the Magics back-court foul trouble and scored at will. With six minutes left a Crawford jumpshot cut the deficit to four, 102-98. Then the defense tighten. Marbury finally broke loose for a layup closing the gap to two 108-106 with 1:05 remaining. Two Francis freethrows put it back up to 110-106. And Antonio Davis answered with two of his own. It was 110-108 and Marbury with the ball in his hands with the clock ticking down drove inside and despite the contact was not awarded the freethrows so the Knicks left the floor crushed. Said Marbury of the noncall:"I drove in and i felt i got bump pretty good and i was expecting the whistle. We fought hard to get back in the game and to lose on a non call is definitely frustrating."
The Magic were led by Stevenson who scored 17 and Dooling stepped in with 16.
Marbury and Crawford led the way with 23 and 24 respectively. Q-Rich and Frye each added 12.

The Knicks visited the Defending Champs in San Antonio for their second game. Tony Parker took advantage of the porous defense and the Spurs cruised to a 121-89 win.
The Knicks defense was non esistant but they managed to stay in it early. But a 14-0 run led by the dynamic backcourt of Parker and Ginobili put the Knicks in a hole they would never get out of. Parker finished with an outrageous 30 points and 19 assists.
Despite Marbury’s 24 and 7 assist the Knicks were unable to generate much offense and turned the ball over too many times.

Larry Brown was still looking for his first win as he Knicks traveled to Orlando. The Magic were 3-0 coming into the game and with their second blowout win in 3 days versus the Knicks stayed undefeated with a 127-106 victory.
New York continues to struggle early on in the season as they have been down by atleast 30 points in each of their first three games.
Jamal Crawford led all scorers with 26. Crawford who got his first start shot 12-22 from the field and was the only bright spot in what was another ugly loss.

The struggling Knicks finally got Larry Brown his first win as they held on for a 110-107 win at home versus the Milwaukee Bucks.
Jamal Crawford led the Knicks for the second night. He scored 29 points and played big late in the game as it was a tight one throughout. After having trouble keeping up early in the game with the dynamic backcourt of TJ Ford and Michael Redd, Larry Brown made a bold move by using a three guard lineup of Robinson, Marbury, and Crawford. The move worked as the three jumpstarted the Knicks offense and perimeter defense.

Knicks hosted the 3-1 Kingss and looked for their second win of the season against a Sacramento team that missed an injured Mike Bibby.
Despite missing their starting point man the Kings managed to keep the game closed and with Peja heating up late managed to steal a road win.
With time running out and a three point deficit the Knicks were unable to take a good shot to send the game into OT because they had ran out of time outs. Resulting in a 107-104 loss in which they led for most of the game.

Coming off a heartbreaking loss at home the Knicks traveled to Milwaukee to face the Bucks for the second time. The Knicks lone victory came against the Bucks a few days earlier but with the home crowd behind them the Bucks were poised for revenge.
Led by TJ Ford and Michael Redd who combined for 50 points in another blowout win. The Knicks suffered their 5th loss and continue with their inconsistencies on both offense and defense. In the end it was the ugliest loss of what has been a disastrous opening to the season. The Knicks were held to 12 points in the first and finished with 70, losing 107-70.
