Name: Rafer Dalton
Age: 22
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 175lbs
College: Siena
Position: Point Guard
Coming out of high school he was not really highly recruited. Teams saw no potential and thought his basketballing skills had hit the 'glass ceiling' and he simply wouldn't get any better. He paid visits to only three schools, Siena appealed to him because it gave Rafer the opportunity to be the leader of this struggling team from the get-go. He made the most of his first season at the school, setting a new Siena record for points scored in a season by a freshman. Things only went up from there. In his sophmore season Rafer came flying out of the blocks with an awe inspiring 35 point, 14 assist effort against Manhattan. It set new school records, and in the space of 24 hours Rafer Dalton was on the draft radar. He continued the season in the same form, dominating his conference and leading the team to their best finish in years. Mock drafts all over the country had him as a projected lottery pick, NBA scouts from all over were excited by the possibilities of this young star who had once been told he'd reached the limit of his ability. Three days before the deadline though, Dalton shocked the basketballing community by annoucning that he would not be declaring for the upcoming NBA Draft. Money had never been an issue for Rafer, having been raised by rich parents and never really wanting for anything. If he could continue his meteoric improvement any further, rumours were that he would be a lock for the #1 pick in the 2004 NBA Draft in front of the likes of Emeka Okafor and Dwight Howard. With this knowledge resting heavily on his shoulders, some of Rafer's friends from back home suggested a night out to celebrate...
The police arrived immediately, followed by an ambulance. Ignoring the fact that he didn't have a license, Rafer's friends were too drunk to drive home and gave him the keys expecting it to all be fine from there on. Driving home, a man having car difficulties ran out onto the road to try and wave down the teenagers in the black convertable. Being the middle of the night, Rafer panicked and swerved past the man spiralling the car out of control and into a tree. Rafer's friend in the back seat was not wearing a seat belt, and crashed through the windsheild dieing instantly. The man in the passenger seat suffered paralysis from the legs down due to the front of the car crushing his legs. Rafer was thrown awkwardly into the steering wheel, getting his arm caught in between and snapping it in three places. His head bashed against the dashboard and he suffered heavy concussion. News swept the NBA quickly, scouts quickly lost interest when they learnt the extent of Rafer Dalton's horrific injuries. Considering his biggest strength was his shooting touch, it was felt that the injuries to his arm meant he would never fully regain his touch again. Rehabilitation went better than expected and Rafer made it back to the team to play the last eight games of the season. It was a minor disaster, to say the least. His first game against Pepperdine, Rafer demanded to start claiming that he was ready for the obvious physical challenge. In just over thirty minutes, Rafer shot 1/13 and had seven turnovers. Relegated to the bench for the next few games, he fared no better. Towards the end of the season some form was regained and he looked somewhat respectable, although still nothing but a shadow of his former self.
After some intensive training in the off-season Rafer Dalton was once again ready to tackle the task of getting himself back on the NBA Draft radar. Unfortunately for him though, his comeback to the role of starting point guard was not as successful as he would have hoped. His stats were increased from the previous season, but that was mainly due to a boost in minutes played. His shooting stroke was virtually non existant, still struggling to find a style that works with his injured arm. The one thing Rafer did have working for him though was his intelligence. Figuring out that his sharp shooting days were all but over, Rafer learnt the value of being aggressive and attacking the ring, gaining most of his points from driving lay-ups and foul shots. Needless to say, being the best player on a bad team in a weak conference really doesn't do anything for a players draft value, and he struggled against any form of quality opposition. The 2004-2005 NBA Draft came and went, watching all of the young upstart PG's being picked over him hurt, but deep down Rafer saw it coming a mile away. Three weeks after the draft, Rafer was in his home town of Aurora when he received a phone call from the virtually destructed Atlanta Hawks. They invited him to training camp with the view to sign a permanant contract, and without even thinking Rafer jumped on the first plane to Georgia. He knew he was joining a bad team, he knew that this was most likely the only chance he would get in the NBA but Rafer Dalton has never been one to throw away second chances. As far as he was concerned, being signed as an undrafted rookie by an NBA team was just as valuable as being the #1 overall pick.
