Overview

HOLY COW!!!!
In a balsy move, even for John Paxson, the Bulls organization announces the trade of J.R. Smith, Luol Deng, and P.J. Brown to the Indiana Pacers for Eddie Gill and Jermaine O'Neal.

Paxson expressed some misgivings about leaving Tyrus Thomas without any backup in the front court and Luol Deng was viewed as expendable because of Thomas' versatility. In an interview with Paxson, he stated:

"I was always after O'Neal. Due to him being under contract in Indiana, I couldn't sign for him. I had to make an offer that the Pacers organization couldn't refuse. They had been discussing Deng in trade talks throughout the offseason and we weren't willing to give him up until now. Deng had publically stated that Indiana would be great place to thrive for him. Once they agreed to take him along with Smith and Brown for O'Neal and Gill, it was a done deal here. I pulled the trigger and we're excited for him to be here."

When O'Neal heard of the trade, he had this to say:

"I'm not too happy to leave Indiana as I've been here for so long. I've made great friends here and I couldn't think any higher of my teammates and coaches. But, once I heard that I would be getting to play with Ben Wallace, Kirk Hinrich, and Ben Gordon, I was ecstatic to come to Chicago. John Paxson put together a great team there and I'm thrilled to be able to contribute. Those boys are poised and ready for a championship run and I hope that I can put them over the top."

Luol Deng was unwilling to comment but his agent did have this to say:

"Luol Deng is excited to be able to play in Indiana. Deng has a stellar two years in Chicago and he is ready to aid in the development of this team."

When Peja Stojakovic left Indiana for New Orleans, it left a hole at the swingman position. Luol Deng was fortunate enough to be able to assume that position for the Pacers. J.R. Smith is an up-and-coming two guard and should be able to learn from, if not take over for Stephen Jackson. P.J. Brown will temporarily fill the hole that Jermaine O'Neal left.

This trade also puts pressure on Andres Nocioni. He is a capable player and should be able to handle the starting 3 role well. However, with Thomas showing that he can contribute in limited minutes or for the long haul.
