Payton To Miami

Image

MIAMI — Now in the final days of what he called a "rather productive" off-season, Heat President Pat Riley sounded confident but not content Thursday.

"The important thing we did this summer is install the core of a team that is versatile, very talented, and can be together three to five years," he said.
But Riley still needs a backup point guard, and future Hall of Famer Gary Payton still is on the list for the job.

"I think that is the last priority, really," Riley said.

Riley said the Heat will re-sign 6-foot-6 swingman Shandon Anderson, 31, who can defend three positions, slash in half-court offense and score in transition.

Among the candidates to back up Jason Williams at the point are Jannero Pargo, most recently with the Chicago Bulls; Jay Williams, the former Bulls first-round pick who is trying to return from a motorcycle accident suffered two years ago; and Payton, 37, who played for Boston last season and is a favorite of center Shaquille O'Neal.

"There are a number of players we're speaking to," Riley said, "and Mr. Payton is one of them."

Riley said it is unlikely the Heat will pursue Washington guard Steve Blake, 25, because he is a restricted free agent and the Wizards are "way under the (luxury) tax," meaning they are expected to match any reasonable offer. Riley said the Heat has not talked about a sign-and-trade deal for him.

"While he's a very good player, he's still unproven," Riley said. "He has great upside; we like him."

Because O'Neal or guard Dwyane Wade will always be on the court and the Heat now has many other offensive options, the Heat would be satisfied with a backup point guard who is a reliable caretaker. Riley declined to say whether Miami would spend its entire $5 million mid-level exception on that spot.

The Heat has a little time to make a decision but not much. Training camp opens Oct. 4 and the first exhibition game will be Oct. 10 against San Antonio at AmericanAirlines Arena. The game will benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Miami seems well-stocked to make a title run, having retooled its roster with a five-team, 13-player trade. The Heat got defense in forward James Posey and offense in forward Antoine Walker and Jason Williams.

Riley said coach Stan Van Gundy would decide whether Posey or Walker starts at small forward.

"But Posey had a great year two years ago when he was healthy," Riley said.

The Heat was not able to sign former Dallas swingman Michael Finley, who chose San Antonio. Riley said acquiring Finley would have made it "a perfect summer."

Still, Riley, who is entering his 11th season with the Heat, said this is the "best offensive team we've had." He said it's mainly because of O'Neal, but also because of the talent surrounding him.

"Your offense is always going to be predicated on the fear level, how many players have to be double-teamed or contained," Riley said.

Noteworthy: Riley said the Heat has talked with the agents for forward-center Christian Laettner and swingman Steve Smith. It's unclear whether either has a realistic chance to return. Both are 36.
