TheBigEasy's 95/96 Tournament

Postby TheBigEasy on Wed Aug 11, 2004 10:35 pm

First of all, thanks to Andrew (and all who participated) for providing us with this Roster patch. As I dont want to quit my current Hornets Dynasty, I decided not to play a full dynasty with the 95/96 Rosters. Instead I will play a big tournament, so that I can play nearly all teams.

This is how it goes. First I have divided the Teams into two groups ... A-Teams and B-Teams. Those with a team rating of 80 and over are group A, the rest is group B. Note: I have reordered the rosters a bit, i.e. put Muggsy Bogues in the active roster and put Dominique Wilkins back to the Hawks.

Code: Select all
Group A                     Group B

Chicago Bulls         93    LA Clippers            79
Denver Nuggets        88    Cleveland Cavaliers    79
Sacramento Kings      84    Houston Rockets        78
Boston Celtics        83    Minnesota Timberwolves 77
Seattle SuperSonics   83    Portland Trailblazers  77
Washington Bullets    83    New Jersey Nets        77
LA Lakers             83    Dallas Mavericks       76
Orlando Magic         83    Indiana Pacers         76
Golden State Warriors 83    New York Knicks        76
Charlotte Hornets     82    Milwaukee Bucks        73
Phoenix Suns          82    Detroit Pistons        73
Miami Heat            81    Vancouver Grizzlies    71
San Antonio Spurs     81    Philadelphia 76ers     69
Atlanta Hawks         81    Toronto Raptors        69
Utah Jazz             80

Than I wrote every Team on a piece of paper and drew pairings, one from group A with one from group B. This are the first round pairings, the left teams are the home teams. Teams marked with an X are the Teams I will play (I have rolled a dice to determine which teams are hometeams and which teams I'll play):

Code: Select all
     Home Team                   Away Team
 1.  Dallas Mavericks            Washington Bullets X
 2.  Philadelphia 76ers          Charlotte Hornets X
 3.  Houston Rockets X           LA Lakers
 4.  Vancouver Grizzlies         Chicago Bulls X
 5.  Boston Celtics X            Detroit Pistons
 6.  LA Clippers X               Phoenix Suns
 7.  Cleveland Cavaliers         Orlando Magic X
 8.  Milwaukee Bucks X           Golden State Warriors
 9.  Denver Nuggets X            Toronto Raptors
10.  Minnesota Timberwolves X    Sacramento Kings
11.  Portland Trailblazers X     Miami Heat
12.  Seattle SuperSonics         New York Knicks   X
13.  Indiana Pacers X            San Antonio Spurs
14.  Utah Jazz X                 New Jersey Nets
15.                              Atlanta Hawks X
16.

Those 16 first round games will provide the 16 teams which will advance to the playoff brackets. I will play a 1-1-1-1 playoffseries. Again the dice will decide which team I play. There are 29 teams, so I dont have enough teams to get 16 pairings. But I have found a way around that. Every winner and loser will be ranked after a certain point system. HonorGlow has something similar going with his "Birdie value" thread. I took the system which is used by www.sportingnews.com for their fantasy leagues.

Code: Select all
  scored Points
+ Rebounds (x 1.5)
+ Assists (x 2)
+ Steals (x 2.5)
+ Blocks (x 2.5)

- missed FGA (x 0.5)
- missed FTA (x 1)
- Turnovers (x 1)

= Total TSNP

Triple Doubles count + 10 TSNP

So after every game I will calculate the TSNP for each winner and loser (already set up an excel sheet for that) and list them. The ranking of the winners will determine which playoff berth they will get (i.e. No. 1 gets first berth in the East). The top ranked loser after the first 14 games will be the opponent of Atlanta in Game 15, the No. 2 and 3 of the losers will have another chance to advance as they play in Game 16.

Than I have the 16 teams necessary to play the playoff series. I will play every game (thats why only 1-1-1-1), and the finals winner will be the winner of the tournament.

I will provide recaps and screenshots for every game, as well as updated rankings. The TSNP point system can also be applied to single players, and I will have a list of the top tournament performers.

So ... stay tuned for the first game, which will be the Washington Bullets @ Dallas Mavericks and I play the Bullets.

Washington Bullets @ Dallas Mavericks

The first game has been played and the outcome was the expected. I played the Bullets, leading them to an easy win over the young Dallas Mavericks. Even the J Triplets (Jamal Mashburn, Jason Kidd and Jim Jackson) couldnt do anything to prevent the Bullets from winning this one.

starting Lineups

Code: Select all
       Bullets           Mavericks

C   - Georghe Muresan   Lorenzo Williams
PF   - Chris Webber      Popeye Jones
SF   - Juwan Howard      Jamal Mashburn
SG   - Calbert Chaney    Jimmy Jackson
PG   - Mark Price        Jason Kidd

At the beginning it started with trading baskets. Neither team was able to jump out to a lead. I started early to give the ball to the 7'7'' giant Georghe Muresan.

Image

Muresan with a baseline reverse dunk over the Dallas big men. I used Chris Webber the same way. And although Dallas was able to block Muresan at one possession, they didnt have much to throw at my frontline. Mark Price found Muresan repeatedly under the basket for easy dunks and layups, so Muresan ended with a team high 14 pts after the first quarter, which ended 29-25 in the Bullets favour. But although Price was labeled with the 3pt icon, he missed all 4 attempts from downtown.

The second started slow and Dallas was able to get closer. With two 3 pt shots they tied it at 31. My 3 pt shooters (Legler and Price) still werent able to hit anything from beyond the arc. Muresan and Juwan Howard, who were on the bench at the beginning of the 2nd, came back in and Washington immediately went on a 10-1 scoring run. But Dallas bounced back, and while I still couldnt hit a 3 if my life depended on it, Dallas hit some of their own and closed the gap to 2. Now Washington tuned it up a notch, pressured more on D and the first 3 pointer by the Bullets made it 60-46 at halftime. Muresan had already 18 pts and the Bullets had pulled down 33 rebounds already.

In the third I tried to maintain that lead and even extend it, which worked at first. But later Dallas came back in it and decreased the lead. Late in the quarter they held me scoreless for nearly 2 minutes. With only 4 points by Washington over the last 4:30 Dallas was able to cut the lead to 78-84 at the end of the 3rd.

Mash scores on a fastbreak after a pass by Tony Dumas (No. 7).

In the fourth Dallas tried a comeback, but my defense stood their ground and they werent able to get close. I extended the lead back to 10 midway through the quarter, where Muresan got blocked a third time!

They now got a little desperate, trying to hit treys. At one time Muresan blocked Jason Kidds 3 pt attempt, Kidd got the ball back and tried again. He was several steps behind the 3pt line and this time Muresan came late. Jason Kidd made it :!:. I forgot to take a picture unfortunately.

Image

The J Triplets inbound the ball late in the game.

I held Dallas at bay in the end, as Georghe Muresan and Chris Webber proved to much for them to overcome. Washington won the game 115-101. Muresan got POG. A funny side note ... all 5 blocks of Juwan Howard were 3 pt attempts by Jamal Mashburn (he jacked up 22 in the game)!

Top Performers

Code: Select all
Washington Bullets

Georghe Muresan (POG)    -   32 pts    7 reb   4 blk   2 ass   = 52,0 TSNP
Chris Webber             -   23 pts   14 reb   2 blk   4 ass   = 48,5 TSNP
Mark Price               -   17 pts    5 reb          13 ass   = 44,5 TSNP
Juwan Howard             -   10 pts   13 reb   5 blk   2 ass   = 41,5 TSNP

Code: Select all
Dallas Mavericks

Jason Kidd         -   20 pts    4 reb   1 stl   6 ass   = 35,0 TSNP
Jim Jackson        -   25 pts    4 reb           2 ass   = 30,0 TSNP
Lorenzo Williams   -    8 pts   10 reb   3 blk   1 ass   = 28,5 TSNP
Popeye Jones       -    9 pts   15 reb   1 stl           = 28,0 TSNP
Jamal Mashburn     -   22 pts    7 reb           2 ass   = 23,5 TSNP

Now Washington is of course the first in the Winners list with 276.5 TSNP and Dallas is currently first in the Losers list with 189.5 TSNP. Dallas is also the Opponent of Atlanta in Game 15 at the moment, but that will change for sure.

Next ...

... will be the Charlotte Hornets playing in Philadelphia against the 76ers. I will play of course the Hornets. As Philly has a 69 rating this should be a easy win for my Hornets.

So stay tuned for more ...

Charlotte Hornets @ Philadelphia 76ers

As expected, this was a very easy win vs. the 69 rated Philadelphia 76ers. In one sentence: Philly didnt stand a chance! Not the slightest one. Muggsy Bogues, "Grandma" Larry Johnson and Glen Rice were just too much for the Sixers.

starting Lineups

Code: Select all
       Hornets               Sixers

C   - Matt Geiger           Shawn Bradley
PF   - Larry Johnson         Clarence Weatherspoon
SF   - Glen Rice             Robert Dumas
SG   - Kendall Gill          Jerry Stackhouse
PG   - Muggsy Bogues         Vernon Maxwell

As always the game started quite slow, the two teams getting a feel for each other. Philly didnt hit much in those first minutes, but Charlotte was only slightly better. Eventually the Hornets D and good execution on O got them a small lead. As the Hornets had no other PF besides Larry Johnson, the Sixers were able to get back in it. But the Hornets still hold them off in the first for a 26-20 lead.

At the beginning of the 2nd quarter the Sixers left Scott Burrell wide open, and he calmly sank a 3 pointer. The inbound pass ended up in the hands of Michael Adams who quickly converted his steal. Those two baskets opened a 11 pt lead for the Hornets.

Image

"Grandma" Larry Johnson slams it home early in the second quarter.

Philly couldnt do anything. The Hornets used that to go on a 12-0 run and extend the lead to 25 pts slightly past the half of the quarter. But than the Sixers started to hit some shots and the Hornets made some mistakes on Defense. The Sixers cut the lead to 19 for the 59-40 halftime score. Glen Rice had already 22 pts.

The Hornets came out running in the third and pushed the lead back in the midtwenties. With their second unit, mind you!

Image

Shawn Bradley with a baseline dunk over Robert Parish, who simply came too late.

But whenever the Sixers tried a comeback, I countered it and I maintained this lead for the rest of the quarter. At the end of the third the Hornets led 92-68.

In the fourth I decided to embarress the Sixers even more. I tightened up the D even more and tried to execute better on O. And it worked. Quickly I had the lead up to 31.

Image

Robert Parish with the Revenge to Shawn Bradleys earlier Dunk.

Than Larry Johnson got injured with about 4:30 left in the game. It wasnt a big blow, as I had a comfortable lead. At this point he had already collected 15 rebounds. While LJ sat the Hornets went on another big scoring run to blow the score even more open. With a 3pointer by Glen Rice I pushed the lead to 41 with just under 2 minutes to go. LJ got back in and grabbed another 3 boards.

In the latter half of the quarter I held the Sixers to only 5 points and managed to even hold them under 90 for the game, which I didnt thought I'd manage. In the end it was the blowout I predicted, with the Hornets winning 125-85. Glen Rice got POG.

Hornets

Glen Rice (POG)    -   38 pts    5 reb   2 blk    5 ass   = 51.5 TSNP
Larry Johnson      -   17 pts   18 reb            3 ass   = 44.0 TSNP
Matt Geiger        -   13 pts   11 reb   2 blk    1 ass   = 33.5 TSNP
Muggsy Bogues      -    9 pts    3 reb   1 stl   14 ass   = 31.5 TSNP

Code: Select all
76ers

Shawn Bradley           -   10 pts   12 reb   3 blk   1 ass   = 32.5 TSNP
Jerry Stackhouse        -   21 pts    8 reb   1 stl   2 ass   = 28.5 TSNP
Vernon Maxwell          -   13 pts    5 reb           6 ass   = 21.5 TSNP
Clarence Weatherspoon   -    2 pts   12 reb   1 stl   1 ass   = 18.0 TSNP

Rankings

While Glen Rice missed Georghe Muresans TSNP total by only half a point, the Hornets managed to bypass the Bullets in the Winners ranking by 1 TSNP. They lead now with 277.5 TSNP, Bullets are 2nd with 276.5 TSNP.

In the Losers column the Mavericks are still first with 189.5 TSNP. The Sixers achieved only 150.5 TSNP (one of the lowest TSNP totals I've ever achieved).

Next up ...

The defending Champion Houston Rockets (78) will face the Magic Johnson-led LA Lakers (83). I'll play the Rockets on their Homecourt, the Houston Summit. We'll see if Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde "the Glide" Drexler are enough to win over Magic Johnson, Vlade Divac, Nick the Quick, Eddie Jones and Elden Campbell.

Thanks Donte ...

LA Lakers @ Houston Rockets

The third game of the preliminary round of the tournament was the first blockbuster. The reigning champion Houston Rockets with Superstar Center Hakeem "the Dream" Olajuwon hosted the LA Lakers, led by Magic Johnson. I thought this would be a more or less easy win for the lower rated Rockets (78 to 83), but was proved wrong.

starting Lineups

Code: Select all
       Rockets            Lakers

C   - Hakeem Olajuwon    Vlade Divac
PF   - Chucky Brown       Elden Campbell
SF   - Robert Horry       Magic Johnson
SG   - Clyde Drexler      Eddie Jones
PG   - Kenny Smith        Nick van Exel

The game started a bit confusing for me, as I havent played for a couple of days ... it was quite hasty and unorganized. Than I found a rythym and the Rockets build a small lead. The Lakers countered and held it close.

Image

Clyde "the Glide" Drexler with a fastbreak dunk.

Than the Rockets pulled away again and held the lead at around 5 points for most of the quarter. Than LA started to hit 3s and managed to get the lead with about a minute left in the quarter. But I was able to get the lead back and at the end of the quarter it was 33-30 for the Rockets. Hakeem Olajuwon had already a near double-double with 10 pts and 9 boards so far.

The second quarter saw the Lakers pulling away and than the Rockets cutting the lead again. Until only a couple of minutes were left in the half we mostly traded baskets, no team able to get away. Than they caught me off guard and with some quick baskets extended the lead to 10 pts. At the end of the half I still trailed 64-56.

In the third quarter LA pushed even harder and the lead further out of reach. Behind the very strong offensive play of Elden Campbell they went on a 8-0 run and extended the lead to 18. It was more or less over for me. Nothing I tried worked very good and in the end I still was 15 pts down for the 84-99 third quarter score.

In the fourth the torture continued. They countered every comeback attempt from me and in the end won it 130-113. Eddie Jones got Player of the Game.

I underestimated the computer. I hadnt thought they would beat me that easily. Ok, they had the higher rated team, but I thought my skills were good enough to hold them off and send them to the Losers column. But instead they did this to me.

Top Performers

Code: Select all
Rockets

Hakeem Olajuwon      -   20 pts   16 reb   2 blk           6 ass   = 53.0 TSNP
Chucky Brown         -   12 pts   13 reb                   4 ass   = 33.5 TSNP
Sam Cassell          -   11 pts    5 reb           3 stl   3 ass   = 28.5 TSNP
Clyde Drexler        -   12 pts    4 reb   1 blk   1 stl   6 ass   = 28.0 TSNP
Elridge Recasner     -   10 pts    4 reb           1 stl   5 ass   = 26.0 TSNP

Code: Select all
Lakers

Eddie Jones      -   27 pts   4 reb   1 blk   4 stl   6 ass   = 50.0 TSNP
Elden Campbell   -   21 pts   9 reb   4 blk           1 ass   = 42.0 TSNP
Vlade Divac      -   10 pts   8 reb   1 blk           4 ass   = 32.5 TSNP
Nick van Exel    -   11 pts   4 reb                   8 ass   = 25.5 TSNP
Magic Johnson    -   17 pts   3 reb                   4 ass   = 21.5 TSNP

Rankings

Hakeem Olajuwons 53.0 TSNP got him the first place, 1 TSNP ahead of Georghe Muresan, while Eddie Jones 50.0 TSNP placed him 4th, right behind Glen Rice.

Even though LA had the highest point total so far with 130, they only scored 250.5 TSNP, which places them third behind Charlotte and Washington.

The Rockets scored 237.0 TSNP in their loss, which of course puts them on first place in the Losers column and for now they are the Opponents of Atlanta in Game 15.

Next up ...

The highest rating team and home of the best player in the World, Chicago (93) will face the Expansion Vancouver Grizzlies (71). I play the Bulls. And this should be a very easy win and the Grizz shouldn't expect to see the next round.

okay, two dubs again. that is 7 dubs so far. and for jordan, put high pressure, double him everytime he touches ball, and don't let him score. it's bad.and pippen, let him do whatever, and everyone else,  , and don't think you might not pull it off, i beat lakers with bobcats in an whatever exhibition game by only 3. highest player scored 46. i remember that game like it was yesterday. *that's cause it was yesterday, dumb ass*. oh yeah. so you might pull it off.
oh yeah btw, you're welcome, i guess i'm the only one reading this and while read your hornets dynasty
