Kings bounce back behind Thomas' shooting
After losing 3 straight, the Kings looked much more confident as they settle in Sactown for the first of 5 at home. The young core of the Bobcats couldn't do enough to overcome
the team play of the Kings, who were led by Isaiah Thomas. Aside from eight players scoring 8+ points, Thomas had 23 points in only 13 shots, as well as 8 assists.

Cousins, Thornton find revenge
There was no elite performance from Tony Parker tonight. After leading his shorthanded Spurs to a 105-101 win over the Kings in San Antonio earlier this month, Parker couldn't rally his team far enough in Sacramento. Still without Tim Duncan, the Spurs couldn't match Demarcus Cousins in the paint tonight. The Kentucky bigman came away with 27 points, and Marcus Thornton added 20 of his own to lead the Kings to a 116-104 win.

Rookie wins PG duel
The cause of a game with very little passing was no mystery on Sunday in Sacramento. Isaiah Thomas and Jazz rookie Trey Burke seemed to do everything for their respective teams, a matchup which the rook won. Burke has surely not disappointed the Jazz since they traded Mo Williams to create more floor time for the Michigan product. He had 30 points against the Kings, as well as effective percentages from the line and from behind the arc. Along with 16-7 from Al Jefferson, the Jazz stole away from Sacramento with the narrow win.

Warriors shoot themselves out
With an ailing Andrew Bogut playing limited minutes, the Warriors' gameplan of a high-scoring affair had no reason to change as they headed to Sacramento. But unfortunately the Sleep Train rims were not kind to their shooters tonight. The Warriors 3pt percentage was a stunningly low 6%, inlcuding downtown performances of 0/4 from Stephen Curry, 0/4 from Harrison Barnes, and 1/5 from Brandon Rush. Conversely, the Kings worked their way into the paint. Demarcus Cousins had an effective night in the paint with 27 points, especially when Bogut was not on the floor.

Williams, Smith carry Hawks
With a deceptive final score, the Kings were unable to finish out their 5-game homestand on a positive note. Aside from a second quarter that saw them outscore Atlanta by 10, the Kings were dominated by the Hawks for the majority of the contest. Offseason re-signee Josh Smith did it all, approaching a triple-double as his Hawks came away with the 101-98 win. Lou Williams added 28 of his own for Atlanta.

Cousins shines in Portland
After a mediocre 3-2 homestand, the Kings travelled to Portland for a 1-game trip. The Blazers have played below expectations this season and are likely looking forward to the return of J.J. Hickson, who has yet to play this season as he finishes recovery from a Torn MCL suffered near the end of last season. Andray Blatche has helped fill in for the Blazers, yet probably neither of them could stop Demarcus Cousins tonight. After an inconsistent opening to the season, Cousins has found his confidence recently. Cousins had a monster 31-14 double-double on the road, as he led his Kings to the 116-112 victory.

Thomas outheats Suns
Returning to Sacramento for two more game at home, the Kings looked to take advantage of the struggling Suns who are losers of their last 5. Isaiah Thomas looked to lead his team to a big win from the opening tip. Thomas dropped a season-best 30 points on nearly 65% from the floor. After a strong performance in Portland, Demarcus Cousins followed it up with a 17 rebound effort. But perhaps the most exciting moment for the Kings faithful was the high-flying finish from 5'9" Pierre Jackson. While both Jackson and Thomas can dunk, this is the first time that Jackson has done so in the NBA.

Heat upgrade on the wing, acquire Miles

Miami Heat Trade: Norris Cole, James Jones
Chicago Bulls trade: C.J. Miles

After last season's trade for Andre Miller, the Miami Heat have found young point guard Norris Cole expendable. The Heat sent him to Chicago, along with James Jones, in exchange for swingman C.J. Miles. In a win-now mode, Andre Miller's veteran abilities will find a greater role now with Cole out of the picture. But another Miller will be hurt by this move. Mike Miller is shooting below 35% from the field so far this season, and playing less than 9 minutes per game. Miles is expected to provide the defense and perimeter shooting from the wing that the Heat are so fond of, likely taking Mike Miller's floor time.

The Bulls can bring Cole along slowly behind Derrick Rose and Luke Ridnour, and may look to him for production next season when Ray Allen will retire, when Rip Hamilton's contract expires, and disgruntled Jimmer Fredette has a team option that may be declined.

Cavaliers add more guard depth

Minnesota Timberwolves trade: J.J. Barea
Cleveland Cavaliers trade: Daniel Gibson, 2014 2nd Round Draft Selection

The Cavaliers seem to want more veteran insurance behind Kyrie Irving, which they find in J.J. Barea. Sending away little-used guard Daniel Gibson, Barea will join Nate Robinson and J.R. Smith in the Cavaliers backcourt rotation.

With Kirk Hinirch on board behind Ricky Rubio, Barea found little floor time this season in Minnsota. The Timberwolves get an expiring contract in Gibson and a 2nd round pick in the deal.

Grizzlies G Marco Belinelli out 2-4 weeks with Broken Hand.

Kings use 3s to hold off Raptors
After winning the first game against the Raptors, 109-101, up in Toronto, the Kings looked to complete the sweep by winning in Sacramento. But Demar Derozan wouldn't let his team go quietly. After a 22 point performance in their previous meeting, his 30 point outing kept his team within striking distance through the first half. Kings C Demarcus Cousins struggled in the second half with his shots (7/22 for the game), mainly due to the defense of rookie Rudy Gobert. With their interior option struggling, Sacramento turned to the perimeter shooting of Marcus Thornton to maintain their lead. Bringing a 7 point advantage into the 4th quarter, the Kings used 5 triples in the final quarter, including 3 from Thornton, to hold on for the 112-109 win.

The Raptors played without Kyle Lowry, who will miss at least a month with a broken arm. Recent acquisition Eric Bledsoe filled in with an effective all-around game for Toronto.

Team play leads Pacers
With a +11 advantage in assists at home, it's no surprise that the Pacers put on a good show, even without Paul George. After losing George last week to a Torn Meniscus, the former Pacer All-Star Danny Granger has stepped back into a larger role with his team. Getting quality shots off of D.J. Augustin's 10 dimes, Granger amassed 24 points to go with his 8 rebounds. Seven players scored 8 or more as the playoff favorite Pacers took the home victory over the Kings.

Aside from the loss, there were multiple bright spots for the Kings. Isaiah Thomas' well-rounded contributions neared a triple-double statline. Forward Ryan Anderson mustered his second-best scoring output with the Kings this season, with an effective 19 points. Demarcus Cousins and Bismack Biyombo combined for 14 offensive rebounds in the loss.

Kings lose more than a game
Heading to Minnesota to play a fellow mediocre team, the Kings were hoping to bounce back on their roadtrip after losing in Indiana. Taking an 8-point advantage into halftime, Sacramento was looking good to do just that. But momentum quickly shifted in the third quarter when Marcus Thornton went down. On an awkward landing after scoring a layup, Thornton crumpled on the baseline while the Timberwolves ran away with the game. Seemingly unprepared to deal with Thornton's loss offensively, the Kings mustered only 46 points in the second half and fell quietly 110-90.

The update on Thornton's injury is a Torn Left Hamstring, which will sideline him for at least a month.

Surprising duo rally Kings
Looking to avoid going 0-3 on their roadtrip, the Kings flew to Denver to face the Nuggets. After receiving the news of the extent of Thornton's injury, they gave rookie Ben McLemore his first taste of starter's minutes, and he didn't disappoint. The added pressure didn't seem to faze the athletic guard from Kansas. Will Barton also stepped up in the increased demand for Sacramento on the road. McLemore and Barton scored 16 a piece, an efficient 32 points on a combined 22 attempts. With the usual performances from Cousins and Thomas, the Kings didn't seem to miss Thornton at all as they claim the road win in Denver.

In a deal that came down to team needs, the Spurs and Warriors swap frontcourt players in a fair trade. After trading away Festuz Ezeli in the offseason, the Warriors get Blair who can play center behind Andrew Bogut. The Warriors also have rookie Jeff Withey to provide minutes at the 5.
The Spurs already have Duncan, Splitter, and rookies Cody Zeller and Lucas Nogueira in their frontcourt. All four of those players can play center, and Landry is a reliable low-post scorer who can play in any combination with them.

Crap, beat the Raptors once again! (N)

Thornton's injury is a bit of a downer. A key player being out for a month can spell disaster, but you've got so many players that can fill in for him it should be no problem. Getting more development time for McLemore is always a plus. I feel like this can accelerate his progression towards becoming a starter if he starts playing well consistently.

Great trade by the Spurs too, both Landry and Blair are pretty bad defenders but Landry can put the ball in the hoop at a pretty good rate.

December Summary

Horse racing in the East

Image

At the beginning of the season, it wouldn't have been difficult to guess who the top 4 would be in the East. As for the other 4 in the playoff picture, it's anybody's guess. The rankings in the east change nightly, with teams fluctuating multiple spots up or down. Barely two months in the season, every game has meaning for the teams jocking for position. The 5th place Wizards and 13th placed Hawks are seperated by 5.5 games, encompassing 9 teams who are one winning or losing streak away from either extreme. This logjam includes playoff teams who have slipped since last season, as well as rebuilding teams making strides. With playoff position up for grabs, who will step up for their teams?

Kings Month in Review

Image

Gaining Traction

Hovering around .500, and posting a 10-6 record at home in Sactown, the Kings have kept their fans' hopes for the playoffs alive, and currently sit 6th in the West. Much of the credit is due to Demarcus Cousins, who is almost averaging 20-10 this season, without any serious attitude issues or altercations. Having exceeded expectations out of the gate, now the Kings are burdened by new ones from people expecting this squad to get the franchise their first postseason appearance since 2006. The next necessary step in putting together a playoff run is winning against other playoff teams. Right now, the Kings are only 5-9 against +.500 teams this season.

But the recent injury to Marcus Thornton will put pressure on the depth of the Kings, especially on rookie Ben McLemore. The upcoming schedule in January may be a difficult test for Sacramento without Thornton. The remainder of the season will be a barometer of if this squad is close to being a consistent playoff contender, or is just an exciting team who will break up this offseason (both Cousins and Thomas are in their final contract years).

I'm really enjoying this association.

Your presentation is really good, one of the best I have seen. And I read a lot of association/dynasty stories. Keep up the good work and hopefully this will be going for much longer

Taylor shatters slump as Kings upset Nets
Hoping to split the season series with the East-leading Brooklyn Nets, the Kings settled in at home for the contest. With a minute restriction on Brook Lopez due to a Bruised Hip, the Nets looked to Deron Williams and Joe Johnson to carry them offensively. Yet Brooklyn's superstar backcourt shot a combined 6/22, and the typically high-scoring Nets mustered less than 100 points.

For the Kings, it was Jeff Taylor who took advantage of the Nets' struggles and led the Kings tonight. Taylor's performance also marked a possible end to a difficult shooting slump, as he dropped a season-best 23 points, inlcuding 5 makes from downtown. Demarcus Cousins added 16 points of his own as they downed the high-riding Nets in Sacramento.

Kings routed at home
After a well-played win against the superior Nets, the Kings failed to perform against an evenly-matched Utah team. While the Kings and Jazz are both fighting each other in the early playoff picture out West, there was no contest tonight. Outrebounded by 15 and accumulating 10 fewer assists, the Kings fell behind by as many as 36 at one point, and lost by 30 in the end. Jazz rookie Trey Burke continued his ROY-caliber season with 27 points and 8 assists.

Kings collapse in 3rd
This was a game that had its outcome determined in one quarter. As the Kings settled in at home to face the ever-dangerous Spurs, they found themselves in a close game at halftime. But whatever Greg Poppovich had to say to his team during the break must have worked. The Spurs' defense limited the Kings to a mere 9 points in the third quarter, and easily coasted to the 18 point win.

Butler, McLemore step up in Milwaukee
Still adjusting to life without Marcus Thornton, the Kings have been looking to rookie Ben McLemore and Jimmy Butler to step up their offense in his absence, and both did so tonight. Combined, they shot a blister 19/22 from the field, and put up their points effortlessly. They never seemed to be pressing or hoisting bad shots, and worked well within the Kings' offense. In addition to Butler's 25 and McLemore's 21, Demarcus Cousins added 27 of his own as the Kings left Milwaukee with the win.

Playing the second game of a 4-game trip, the Kings were not prepared for the Knicks' defensive efforts in the Garden. The Kings committed 23 turnovers to the Knicks' 8 en route to a 14-point loss. Kings outrun Celtics
Shooting below 40% tonight, the Celtics' struggles this season continue. They seem to be considering starting over, as they recently jettisoned the likes of Brandon Bass, Courtney Lee, and now Jason Terry. Unable to muster sufficient talent to put around Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, the Celts find themselves outmatched by most younger teams.
The Kings were the most recent to take advantage of the struggling Celtics, and used 26 fast break points to claim the road win in Boston. Jimmy Butler had another strong performance with 18 points, and Demarcus Cousins had a double-double.

Ben McLemore: 14 PTS - 2 REB - 2 BLK - 3/5 3PT FG

Avery Bradley: 14 PTS - 7/11 FG

Kevin Garnett: 10 PTS - 7 REB - 3/10 FG

NBA Transactions:
Celtics let the Jet fly
Boston Celtics trade: Jason Terry
Phoenix Suns trade: Luis Scola
The Celtics continue a gradual process of shedding their large contracted veterans by sending Jason Terry to Phoenix in exchange for Luis Scola. A young Phoenix squad adds a quality player with champion experience in Terry, while freeing their frontcourt for the likes of Marcin Gortat, Michael Beasley, and the Morris twins.

Scola adds another veteran in the Celtics frontcourt who can help the development of young bigs such as Jared Sullinger, Fab Melo, and Willie Cauley-Stein. Primary, this move seemed to be about shedding Terry's remaining 2 years and over $10M contract.

NBA Injury Updates:
Hawks F Mike Scott out 2-4 weeks with Severe Ankle Sprain.
Grizzlies F Tayshaun Prince out 6-8 weeks with Torn Hand Ligament.

NBA Notes:
Spurs win 11th straight, now 24-10 overall.
Rockets win 8th straight, now 24-12 overall.
Wizards lose 6th straight, now 19-16 overall.

Bulls edge Kings in Chicago
Heading to Chicago for a tough game with the Bulls, Sacramento hoped to continue their competent offensive play against the Bulls' tough defense. The Kings did muster 20 fast break points, but were unable to get enough easy opportunities to beat the Bulls. Renowned for their physical gameplan, the Bulls' frontcourt carried them tonight with their offensive rebounds and their hard work inside. Chicago got to the foul line a stunning 47 times in their grind-it-out win at home, led by Joakim Noah's 23 points and 12 FT attempts.
Bulls: 105
Kings: 103

Pierre Jackson: 12 PTS - 2 REB - 3 AST - 5/5 FT

Manimal's efforts fall short in Sacramento
Settling back into Sacramento after 4 straight on the road, the Kings probably felt lucky to be playing before their home fans. But they should also feel lucky about the outcome of their game against the Nuggets. Denver's Kenneth Faried, notorious for his game-changing energy, made his mark tonight. Faried mustered 19 rebounds for his Nuggets, including a career-best 9 offensive boards. But the offensive struggles of Javale McGee and recently returned Lance Stephenson (Sprained Toe) likely prevented a Denver victory. Despite a massive deficit in offensive rebounds and second chance points, the Kings managed to hold on for the relatively comfortable 104-95 win.
Kings: 104
Nuggets: 95

Sacramento Kings Top Performers
Demarcus Cousins: 28 PTS - 12 REB - 11/22 FG

Javale McGee: 8 PTS - 6 REB - 4/13 FG - 0/4 FT

Kings smother Bucks
Despite having multiple strong defenders on their roster, the Kings are still not considered an elite or even a strong defensive team. Still maintaining an offense-first mindset, Sacramento has shown flashes of strong defense, including their efforts tonight against the Bucks. The Bucks' poor team shooting percentanges (31% FG/ 21% 3PT/ 63% FT) were only able to accumulate 87 points for the game. Sacramento's defensive bigs of Biyombo and Ezeli combined for 7 of the team's 11 blocks in the contest.
Kings: 104
Bucks: 87

Sacramento Kings Top Performers
Isaiah Thomas: 19 PTS - 4 REB - 5 AST - 6/12 FG

Larry Sanders: 12 PTS - 8 REB - 4/12 FT

Kings outrebounded in disappointing loss
After three strong wins in their last four games, the Kings looked to keep building momentum as they headed to face the Warriors on the road. After a high-scoring first quarter that saw the Kings take a 37-30 lead, it was all downhill for Sacramento. They only mustered 70 points for the rest of the game as the Warriors' frontcourt dominated the glass. Golden State's +12 rebound advantage led them to the 9-point win at home.
Warriors: 116
Kings: 107

Isaiah Thomas: 21 PTS - 8 AST - 8/19 FG
Ben McLemore: 21 PTS - 5 REB - 9/17 FG
Ryan Anderson: 19 PTS - 6/11 FG - 5/5 FT

Familiar duo lead Kings
After carrying the majority of the load last season for the Kings, Demarcus Cousins and Isaiah Thomas have found themselves with more help from their teammates this year. Thomas' numbers especially have dipped, mostly due to being the only perimeter offensive option. But that doesn't mean they can't carry their team. Cousins' 26-13 and Thomas' 24-11 double-doubles led the Kings to an easy win over the Suns, as they both played 40 minutes in the contest.
Kings: 104
Suns: 91

Sacramento Kings Top Performers
Demarcus Cousins: 26 PTS - 13 REB - 9/14 FG

Michael Beasley: 12 PTS - 8 REB - 4/17 FG
Marcin Gortat: 10 PTS - 7 REB - 5/12 FG

Shorthanded Pelicans fall quietly
With the injury-prone Eric Gordon missing time with a Broken Foot, the Pelicans welcomed the Kings to the Big Easy. Filling in for Gordon was the former King Tyreke Evans, facing his former team for the first time since changing teams in the offseason. But Evans had little help from his new team tonight, as only one other player for New Orleans scored in double figures. After outstanding performances in their last game against Phoenix, Demarcus Cousins and Isaiah Thomas again carried the Kings in an easy victory.
Kings: 104
Pelicans: 91

Sacramento Kings Top Performers
Demarcus Cousins: 27 PTS - 11 REB - 6 AST - 13/20 FG
Isaiah Thomas: 25 PTS - 5 AST - 8/11 FG - 5/7 3PT FG

Butler shines as Kings claim 3rd straight
Despite obvious playoff expectations, the Mavericks have struggled so far this season and currently sit 11th in the tough Western Conference. Conversely, the Kings have surprised many, sitting inside the top 8 and having their fans' hope for an end to their 7-year playoff drought. With offseason signee Greg Oden expectedly struggling with nagging injuries, the Mavericks frontourt has been a patchwork that the Kings took advantage of tonight. Claiming a +11 rebounding advantage, the Kings also used a welcome 24-point outing from Jimmy Butler to get the win in Big-D. Butler also had 10 rebounds to claim his second double-double of the season.
Kings: 97
Mavericks: 88

Sacramento Kings Top Performers
Jimmy Butler: 24 PTS - 10 REB - 10/14 FG
Isaiah Thomas: 15 PTS - 5 REB - 7 AST - 7/14 FG
Demarcus Cousins: 14 PTS - 14 REB - 4/13 FG - 6/7 FT
Ryan Anderson: 11 PTS - 4 REB - 5/8 FG

Dallas Mavericks Top Performers
O.J. Mayo: 23 PTS - 6 REB - 10/21 FG
Brandan Wright: 14 PTS - 10 REB - 5/14 FG
Dirk Nowitzki: 12 PTS - 5 REB - 6/8 FG
Darren Collison: 12 PTS - 10 AST - 5/16 FG

CP3's triple-double leads Clips
Sitting in the top 4 in the Western Conference, the Clippers are unsurprisingly considered legitimate contenders after resigning Chris Paul. As the undisputed leader of the Clippers, Paul continued his dominant play in Sacramento. CP3 notched a triple-double and, along with 28 points from Blake Griffin, pushed L.A. to an easy 23-point win.
Clippers: 111
Kings: 88

Los Angeles Clippers Top Performers
Blake Griffin: 28 PTS - 7 REB - 13/26 FG - 40 MIN

Ben McLemore: 17 PTS - 5 AST - 7/8 FT
Pierre Jackson: 9 PTS - 2/8 FG - 1/5 3PT FG
Isaiah Thomas: 9 PTS - 3 REB - 2 AST - 3/12 FG

NBA Transactions:
Spurs continue to shape frontcourt
San Antonio Spurs trade: Tiago Splitter
Washington Wizards trade: Emeka Okafor
Barely two weeks after acquiring Carl Landry, the Spurs traded for veteran bigman Emeka Okafor. Some question the intelligence of giving up Tiago Splitter, but the Spurs are making moves to make another run at the Finals now before Duncan and Ginobli age much farther.

NBA Injury Updates:
Trailblazers F Lamarcus Aldridge out 4-6 weeks with Broken Jaw.
Pelicans G Eric Gordon out 2-4 weeks with Broken Foot.
Bobcats G Kemba Walker out 4-6 weeks with Strained Oblique.

NBA Notes:
76ers win 5th straight, now 26-20 overall.
Grizzlies lose 6th straight, now 18-30 overall.
Wizards lose 10th straight, now 19-26 overall.

Well, it seems I might bring this to an end here. I accidentally deleted some of the CF files I was still using here, including almost all of the rookie CF files (which I had to determine and assign manually with the roster editor). I'm too lazy to track them all down and reassign them. Also, my 2k14 just arrived and I am considering starting a new Kings association there (which I can stick to for multiple season like I initially planned).

Thanks for any comments and encouragement with my first attempt at a story, and look forward to beginning a long-term association soon if I have the time.

Ah, always a bummer when it's cut short mid way through a season. Definitely will be following a new Association story whenever you decide to start it up. I liked a lot of what you did over here.
