NBA LOCKOUT ENDS

After months of negotiations, David Stern fronted the press in New York today to announce the end of the NBA lockout.
"The 2011-2012 season will be starting next month," Stern said in a live broadcast amid cheers. David Stern defended his conduct during talks as well as his position as the NBA's commissioner. The lockout fiasco had many calling for his head to be put on the chopping board. Stern acknowledged the calls for his resignation but distanced himself from any possibility of that happening, "I know that some people were upset but I tried my best to get the best solution for everyone. I am happy now because everyone is happy. I am happy for the fans because we will have a season. Right now, it's time to get back to work."
President of the Player's Union Derek Fisher and Executive Director Billy Hunter voiced their satisfaction in coming to an outcome after talks threatened to cancel the entire NBA season. "I thought my career was going to be over," the Lakers' Fisher joked, "Thanks for saving the end of my career." Hunter was a bit more serious, "After all the development this team has gone through and to be at this stage of profitability, I am glad that we came to an amicable compromise where the owners and the League recognizes how important the players are. It would have been a huge blow to all parties if the entire season was cut."
The details of the agreements made to stop the lockout have not been released but the league has promised to report them soon.
In the meantime, however, Stern noted that there was a lot of work to do. "We only have 4 weeks to get a season up and running," he announced, "We have training camps, preseason and also a condensed regular season to plan. We will need to check arena availabilities and everything. It will be a mammoth task but I am certain that the 2011-12 NBA season will be a huge success."
Stern confirmed that the regular season would be a 58 game season. The playoff structure would remain the same with best-of-7 game series for every round.
