Marcus Hill was nervous. A close friend had set him up with an exclusive meeting with NBA commissioner David Stern. He had no idea how, but he wasn't about to think twice about it. His focus was set on convincing Stern that he had a great idea. After waiting for what felt like hours, Stern finally walked into the room.
"Thank you so much for agreeing to meet with me Mr. Stern, it's a real honor" Marcus said, as he got out of his chair to shake Sterns hand, his voice shaky. "No problem, my associate tells me you have an interesting idea, and while I'm not usually open to hearing left field suggestions, I thought I would at least see what you have to say. Mr. James is a very reputable man." Marcus smiled, "Well I just want you to know that I am very grateful for you meeting me." Stern crossed his arms on the table looking as if he were open to hearing any suggestion, "No problem. So what have you got for me?"
Marcus took a deep breath. "Sir, I love the NBA. I wouldn't change it one bit, but I think I have an idea that can shake things up a bit and generate a little more interest in the league." "Oh?" Stern said, sounding very uninterested. "And what is that?" Marcus paused. "Okay, here it is. Create a team out of nowhere, completely from scratch. Put them in a city that has never had a sports team. Bring in all new players, a team of nobodies. Then build up anticipation around them," Marcus was getting excited, "If we find the right guys I think this could be very inspirational and beneficial for the NBA.
Stern took a deep breath before replying lazily, "Mr. Hill, I don't see how this can shake things up at all. Your basically saying start a new team and there will be an amazing story and following behind it, and I have no idea what would make you think that. Look at the Thunder. Look at the Bobcats. Does that seem amazing to you!? What about this is beneficial to the league?" Feeling like he needed to defend his idea, Marcus replied "This isn't the same. This is something that has never been done before. Nobody would expect this. Look, the NBA thrives from inspiration. Little kids, teenagers, they look up to their favorite NBA players. Weather they play basketball or not, their favorite players are an inspiration to them. That's why these players have an image. The younger fans buy jerseys and all types of merchandise. The adults follow their favorite teams closely, hoping every year that they make a run for the championship. That excites people. Even though on the surface it doesn't seem as deep, the NBA is a very inspirational organization for everyone that likes it." Stern seemed a bit more interested, which Marcus was surprised to see and capitalized on it.
"I believe we can create a team that can generate that interest like no oth team before. All NBA fans have a favorite team, but by creating an all new team that is new to everyone, we have a chance to make them curious and interested. If we pick the right guys and create the right organization, we can have a devotion to this team like no other." Marcus got up and walked to the window, staring out of it for a few seconds before continuing. "Mr. Stern..," Marcus said, turning around, "I am very dedicated to making this work. All my life I have loved the NBA. Not a particular team or player, but just the game of basketball in general. The competition, the competitiveness, the emotion. Everything just intrigues me. I believe I can make a lot of NBA fans, a lot of basketball fans in general, feel this way about my team. Not everyone who likes basketball is a fan of the NBA. I think I can change that.
After a few seconds of silence, Stern got up and walked towards the door. He paused, still looking at the door, "I'll probably call you soon so when this fails I have an excuse of not thinking it over properly."
