Prolouge

Daniel Baros is an extremely laid-back person. He has real estates in almost every parts of the globe and with the fortune he inherited from his father and the monthly income from his real estates, Michael could afford not to work, even at the tender age of 28. The downside to that was dealing with the boredom. Another typical day in the apartment, Mike lazed on the crouch, running out of ideas of how to pass time.

“Hello? Is it you, Daniel?” Daniel picked up his phone, immediately recognizing the voice on the other side,

“Hey, Steve, what’s up? Want to hang out? I’m dying out of boredom here.” Daniel asked. Steve was his best friend since god knows when and they played on the same basketball team in high school.

“Haha, I’m sorry, I don’t have countless properties to collect rent from. Some people got to work to earn their income. Anyway, I have a favor to ask from you. Do you have 10 million to spare?”

“Why do you need so much for?” Daniel asked, his friend’s request piquing his curiosity. Daniel knew that his friend don’t usually ask for money since he is the heir to a multi-national company, someone who is making more money that he will ever have in his entire life.

“Long story short, I want to take over a basketball franchise and the previous owner is making things difficult for the buyers, stating that the maximum shares an individual owner can hold are 33%. You know how much hassle it is to work when you don’t have the final say. I just need to consolidate my power. And I don’t have so much movable capital at this moment.”

“What do I get? You know sports franchises don’t really make much money.” Daniel asked.

“I knew you would ask me that question! How does the general manager of a NBA franchise sound to you? We can get Coach to come coach the team!” Mike responded.

“Hmm…It would be fun. Let me get back to you after I contact my fund managers. I will see what I can cough up. Hang on!
Which team are you buying?”

“Grizzlies, the Memphis grizzlies.” Mike said proudly.

Chapter 1
Three days later

“Hey coach!” Daniel yelled through the phone. His team of financial advisors had managed to dig out the sum that Mike had requested and Daniel is unofficially the new general manager of the Memphis Grizzlies. It had been a long time since Daniel had to work and he decided to start with hiring a new head coach. The man he had in mind was David Hitoroshi, his high school basketball coach. The man is already in his late fifties but always energetic and eager to pass on his experience and knowledge to everyone who undergoes his tutelage. Daniel was confident that he was the man to take over the role.

“I was wondering if you would like to come and coach an NBA franchise. Mike and I had just acquired the Grizzlies and thought that you would be the ideal person to take over.” Daniel exclaimed.

“Are you serious? The franchise is going to go to the gutters with the both of you in charge! I remember the time when you screw up the game-winning play!” David rattled away. “I have no time for an NBA franchise. The players there are too un-coachable.”

“The pay is flexible, as well as the working hours. You just have to turn up for the games.” Daniel pleaded, knowing that his coach isn’t someone who would change his mind that easily.

“Nah. I’m doing fine here coaching young boys. You would resist change if you were my age. But I hate to leave you hanging. I have a suggestion. Would you consider my daughter for the job?”

“You mean Wendy? Are you serious?” Daniel exclaimed, remembering the daughter of the coach. She was around the same age as Daniel but they hardly talked.

“You are out of touch. She is known as Dr. W nowadays. Haven’t you heard? She is one of the best sports doctors in the world. She specializes in healing those career-threatening injuries. Many of her clients call her Dr. Win because she helps them win championships. She will save you the money of hiring a physiologist.”

“Are you sure she is good?” Daniel asked skeptically.

“Of course, half my plays were thought of by her and she has worked with so many top players from different sports. She holds a master degree in psychology as well. She is well-equiped for the job.”

“Okay, I will take your word for it. If she isn’t good, she is out.” Daniel sighed. It wasn’t easy being the general manager when you need to call the shots. Daniel switched on the television, just in time to watch M.Miller make a game winning basket. This was the start of hell.

Weekly Updates

Wendy Hitoroshi makes history
Image
Dont you wish your coach was as hot as her?

The Memphis Grizzlies had earlier announced the hiring of a new Head Coach, Wendy Hitoroshi. The move caused quite a sensation throughout the entire nation as Wendy is a relative unknown to most basketball fans. This move by the Grizzlies signals the willingness to change things around, with new owner, Mike Highton and new general manager Daniel Barros. This will make Hitoroshi the first women head coach in the histroy of the NBA, also the highest ever head coach at 28 years old. Many critics have since jumped in to criticize the move by the new general Manager, Daniel. Daniel however had since jumped to the defense of his new signing.

"Many people just base their facts off rumors and their own prejudice. Wendy is a very accomplished sports doctor and she definitely has the mentality to move us into the next level. Not offense to Marc (Iveroni) but I believe Wendy will be the one suited for this task.

Kobe on the move

The Lakers talisman Kobe Bryant has announced his desire to be traded. He has expressed his frustrations of needing to carry his team and blames the front office in not doing enough to surround him with enough talent for him to win his fourth championship and put to sleep the notion that he can only win with Shaq. Interested parties are rumored to be the Memphis Grizzlies and the Lakers’ neighbor Clippers. Other players whom are rumored to be on the move are Allen Iverson and Larry Hughes

Allen Iverson vows to share

Allen Iverson in a recent interview had stated his desire to share the ball more with his teammates.
“I have entered a stage in my career where winning the championship ring is more important than any other thing. Im surrounded by good players like Melo and Smith. I will definitely try to take less shots and get the others involved.”

Chapter 2

Daniel gulped. Wendy had grown up to become a very attractive lady.
”Are you just going to stare at me the entire time?” She asked.

She was decked out from head to toe in black. Her eyes were oriental, benefiting from having a Japanese father and an American mother. She had the figure of a model; probably from all the yoga and cross-country running she used to do.

“Come on, they are going to have the meeting soon. Don’t look like such a fool!” Wendy nudged Daniel in the ribs.

“Ow! Okay, I got it!” Daniel hissed. He was not going to get bossed around by a female. The room was already seated with 7 people, one of whom was Mike, sitting in the centre. Daniel knew that the rest of the staff will also be here and shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He was unsure to how to make his presence felt later. Two people caught Daniel’s eyes. One was be-spectacled and had a beard while the other had well-built muscles, probably a coach. They were whispering and gesturing in his direction, sniggering occasionally. Daniel knew that the joke was on Wendy and him. Daniel had prepared himself mentally for this treatment. He himself was doubtful of Wendy but after an interview with her, he was sure that she had the credentials and the mentality to lead the Grizzlies to greater heights. Daniel turned his attention away from them. Seeing all the seats were filled up, Mike cleared his throat and stood up.

“Welcome to the meeting. Almost everyone here is new and I believe that this spells a new era for the Memphis Grizzlies. First of all, let us welcome the new General Manager, Daniel please." Daniel saw the be-spectacled man sneered and once again whispered something to his partner. Daniel ignored him.

“First of all, I like to thank mike for giving me the opportunity to lead the team. As such, I will do my best to build our team. Our team has immense potential and im sure with a few pieces and trades; we can trade for the future. With Rudy Gay as our foundation, I’m sure that we will have a championship contender team within 5 years.” Daniel’s words drew many whispers from the crowd. The bespectacled man cleared his throat and stood up.

“I’m sorry to interrupt but I have an excellent piece of news to share. A few days ago, I had the chance to meet up an agent of a player and he is interested in joining our team as long as we can pull off the trade. That player is none another than Kobe Bryant.” The bespectacled man grinned when he heard the entire boardroom break out in applause and cheers.

Daniel was about to retort when Wendy held him back. She shook her head. “Not here!” Daniel unwillingly sat back down. The rest of meeting went without incident, with majority of the content about the sales of jerseys and merchandise. After the meeting, Daniel confronted Mike about the bespectacled man.

“He is the assistant general manager, in charge of the advertising and sales. I’m not the only one with 33% control of the franchise. See that guy in black? He has 30% and that guys with the spectacles, he has 2% shares so I can’t sack him.” Mike sighed.

“But Kobe! HE would not be beneficial to us! He is aging already! Can’t you do anything?” Daniel shouted.

“No I can’t. I already told you that the board can veto any transfer and I might have the final say but they can override my decision. Kobe Bryant is a good proposition, if he pulls it off; I doubt anyone on the board will refuse. I suggest you try to hijack the trade. Lakers aren’t going to give Kobe up without getting in return. If you trade away the pieces for the trade, he can’t trade for Bryant.” Mike smiled “I’ve got to go. Bye”

“Easier said than done!” Daniel mumbled.

“Hi, my name is Joseph, Joseph Yane.” The bespectacled man reached out his hand. Daniel moved in front of him, staring straight into his eyes. “I’m the General Manager, I call the shots around here. You got it?”

“Unfortunately for you, I also have own backing and I doubt you will last long. If you need a woman to help carry the load that is” Joseph burst out in laughter and walked away. Daniel clenched his fist, he knew that he couldn’t hit him and that didn’t make him feel any better. The job as a General Manager was tougher than he thought it was.

Later in the afternoon, in the Memphis Headquarters

“Rick, can you believe it? That guy wants to bring Kobe Bryant in! I have no idea what he is thinking!” Daniel continue to rant, Ricky was one of his financial advisors and was an avid fan of basketball and requested to be transferred here.

“Well, Kobe is a great player and a great leader, and he is going to sell tickets, what’s wrong with him?” Ricky asked, flipping through a folder. Daniel had ordered him to source for potential trades which could rival Joseph’s.

“Well, firstly he cannot fit in and second, I don’t like anyone Joseph brings in!” Daniel fumed.

Scout Reports
A small extract from Memphis Scout, Finley's notes

Name :Hiro Takahashi
Primary Position :Point Guard
Secondary Position : Second Guard
Age : 19
Height : 6"7
NBA Comparison : Steve Nash

Strengths : This kid can run the pick-and-roll like no other rookies i have seen in my career. Potentially one of the best defenders in the game, definitely have the mentality to stick with his man. The person he is marking may leave the game feeling lonely. A pass-first point guard. Relatively fast and his size would pose quite a problem for opposing 1 guards. Good passing skills, he will find you an open spot. Athletic as point guards come.

Weakness : Only a moderate jump shot, reluctant to shoot, poor blocking and offensive rebounding. Moderate dribbling. Has shown in some workouts that he doesnt seemed to like to communicate, might be a problem. Needs to work on his dribbling skills.

Notes: Definitely a top 5 pick. He has all the potential to become a future top 5 point guard but he needs to work on his shot selection and score more often. He doesnt seem to like to talk much which might pose a problem for a point guard who needs to run the play.

Name : Corey Brewer
Primary Position : Small Forward
Secondary Position : Shooting Guard/Power Forward
Age : 21
Height : 6"8
NBA Comparison :Tayshaun Prince

Strength : Another good defensive player. Have the potential to be one of the best stoppers in the NBA. Good rebounding, stealing attributes. Athletic

Weakness : Needs to work on his shot and ball-handling skills. Needs to add more bulk onto his frame to be a more rounded player.

Notes : A top 10 draft pick in my opinion. A player which might need some time to adjust to the league but is a worthy investment for the future.

Chapter 2.1

Daniel stretched, holding a white file in the air triumphantly. This would be what he needs to turn the franchise around, a big trade to shake things up. Daniel had been working overtime to work this plan out. It was a tiring process but Daniel knew time was of the essence to beat Joseph before he traded for Kobe Bryant. The draft lottery had been decided and Daniel had high hopes on the draft being the cornerstone of his rebuilding.

"Lets hope this work, if not im screwed..." Daniel let out a sigh.

Draft Order

3) Atlanta Hawks
4) Memphis Grizzlies
5) Boston Celtics
6) Milwaukee Bucks
7) Minnesota Timberwolves
