Alright, so my graphics are still screwed up, but graphics were never my forte anyway. I guess you can expect an occasional picture here or there but nothing too special. So if you're one of those people who fret at the lack of pictures and don't intend on reading anything, I suggest that hitting the "back" button is the most suitable thing for you to do.

Blazers Personnel Have Five New Faces

With Blazers owner Steve Patterson giving John Nash the boot and officially taking over the General Manager duties, Patterson's first moves came at no suprise to anyone when he hired an entirely new coaching, scouting and training staff to kick off hopefully the first of many changes to the come for the distraught Portland TrailBlazers basketball franchise. Today Patterson has announced that he has signed assistant coaches Enrique Dickey, Daniel Saez, assistant head coach Nuno Oliveria, European scout Francisco Lima and new head trainer Ignacio Perez.

"I've been in contact with these people for a very long time and I know Daniel, Eric, Nuno, Francisco and Ignacio all very well," said Steve Patterson at the official press conference. "This new staff that I'm bringing in embodies the new image that the Portland TrailBlazers organization is striving for, which is one that involves hard work, dedication, strong leaders and professionals that are involved in the community."

By far, the most significant piece out of these five acquisitions is Francisco Lima, who is generally regarded as one of the top scouts in Europe and should prove to be a valuable asset to the Blazers, especially since teams in this current day and age have thrived off of tapping into the European talent overseas. "I loved my job in Europe, but I believe that coming here to America will benefit me much more," says the 62 year old. "They say that if you want to be involved with the most highest level of basketball, then you must join the NBA. I'm thankful that Mr. Patterson has expressed interest in allowing me this opportunity."

With the youth movement in full swing and a rebuilding process that might consider shipping away marquee players Zach Randolph and Darius Miles, the Portland Trailblazers must rely on two young swingmen to insure their success. Both Martell Webster and Brandon Roy are two home-town favourites that hail from Seattle, Washington, but both players are entering training camp with different motivations and ambitions.

Coming into the NBA as the sixth overall pick of the 2006 draft, Brandon Roy seems to fit the exact criteria that Portland desperately needs: A crafty scorer that can help the team in multiple facets of the game while also lending a well-voiced presence in the locker room and providing a respectful, laid-back personality to a team that has well-documented chemistry issues and a tarnished reputation that will take some time to repair.

Martell Webster was also drafted sixth, but in the draft a year before. Despite a somewhat sluggish rookie campaign, many Blazer fans still have hope for the 19 year old who came out of high school; many have claimed that Webster had problems adjusting to the daily hardships of being a professional athlete like many other young players do. People feel that if Webster is able to gain more confidence on the court, positive results will follow for the Portland basketball franchise.

However, there are doubters for both players. With basketball analysts claiming Roy to be the most NBA-ready player in a draft with not as much star power in previous drafts, many look to Roy with overbearing hype as the new leader of the team without even logging a minute on to an official NBA court. Even more pressure is added to contribute right away when star players Zach Randolph and Darius Miles seem to have worn out their welcomes in Portland and might be headed to a different team.

Webster has also been criticized for his poor rookie season play and being outplayed by more experienced and NBA-ready players such as Danny Granger or Channing Frye who were drafted below Webster. Another heavily criticized part of Webster's game was his shooting, which according to many scouts was Webster's strength, was almost non-existant during his first NBA season as he shot a streaky 39% from the field. Many pessimists also feel that if Webster's shooting touch does not improve, than his average athleticism is unable to compsensate for his ineffective shooting, making him a waste of a pick since he was drafted so high.

One must wonder what this can do to a man's confidence, but Roy simply realizes that he must let his game do the talking. "I don't know if I'm going to play well or play badly this season, that's up to me find out," says Roy. He later adds in his typical swagger-filled but not overconfident manner, "Many people say that I can't do this or that, but when it comes down to it I'm going to give it my all and I'm going to do my best to become an active leader on the team." Webster also thinks the time to prove that he is worth the investment of a lottery pick and step up his leadership role is now.

"Last year was a learning experience," said Webster. "I worked very hard and I learned a lot last year by picking up a lot of things that I didn't know about in high school. Now I'm hoping to become more vocal and try to work on my game even more to take it to another level."

"Heck, I'm glad my rookie season's over with," Webster later adds with a smirk on his face as he points to Brandon Roy, who is carrying the team's luggage. "Being a rookie and coming out of high school last year, the team really looked to me as the little kid on the team. Now that I'm a sophomore, I get to order the new guys around that are older than me."


Brandon Roy is hoping to adjust to the rigors of the NBA while Webster needs to show that there is more to his game.

Roy will definitely see some time at PG, but I'm thinking more of a a SF/SG role. I hate plaing Dixon at the 2 and even though he has no point guard skills I want to make him more of a distributor.

Miles for sure is getting the boot out of here but I'm not too sure about Randolph. I hate undersized and unathletic PFs but if I can play well enough with him to like him in the game I might keep him.

PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 28 (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers showed great promise in their younger players during their opening game of the regular season, but it was ironically their youth and inexperience that might have been what led to their late over-time collapse against the defending Western Conference Champion Dallas Mavericks.

Maverick leading scorer and all-star Dirk Nowitzki was injured 3 minutes into the game and would not return, but Dallas' depth at the foward and centre postions helped compensate for Nowitzki's absence. Austin Croshere scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in his first game as a Maverick and Erick Dampier helped clog the middle, contributing 12 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals.

For all four quarters, the Blazers had managed to keep the score close against Dallas. Newly acquired centre Jamaal Magloire kept the Blazers close for the first half; scoring 16 of his 18 points in the first and second quarters while also grabbing 10 rebounds. Martell Webster followed closely behind with a 17 point performance and led the Blazers for most of the second half as he scored 11 points in the final two periods.

Portland Rookie Brandon Roy struggled against Josh Howard's defence, scoring 11 points on 3 of 15 shooting and commiting 5 turnovers, but impressed fans with his all around play by grabbing 8 rebounds, dishing out 4 assists and recording 2 steals and a block. Roy also hit two key free-throws to give the Blazers a 94-91 lead with 11 seconds remaining.

Roy's clutch efforts were in vain, however. Jason Terry, who paced Dallas' offence with 21 points, scored on a long jumper with 5.8 seconds left. Martell Webster, one of the Blazers best free-throw shooters, missed one of his free-throws to increase the lead to only 95-93. Terry easily tied the game afterwards with a floater in lane. Dallas then took over in over-time, going on a 10-0 run created by a pair of three pointers by Anthony Johnson and Jerry Stackhouse which was followed up by two layups by Stackhouse and Terry in the final one and a half minutes of the extra session.

"I should have been able to hit that one free-throw," said a disappointed Webster. I feel that this loss is probably for me to blame, but the fact that we only hit three shots (out of 14) in over-time really hurt our chances to win it." Webster's teammate, LaMarcus Aldridge, had a more optmistic view on the loss.

"We definitely lost a lot of momentum heading into over-time," said rookie LaMarcus Aldridge, who made his NBA debut with a 4 point, 8 rebound performance. "They just showed to us why they managed to get into the finals last year. We're still a young team, but we hung tough with one of the best teams in the league."

Raptors fan fest is basically when you get to watch the Raptors practice for free. They took it out a year or so ago, but they've decided to put it back in.

It was pretty boring even though I did get front row seats.
