Today I met all my new players. Billy Knight showed me my office, and I just received a copy of the 12 guys on the main roster.
I had a full week of practice before the trading period, and as I coach run and gun basketball, the guys ran for almost a full week. They also shot a lot, because I don't think this is a great shooting team, and in the half-court, we're gonna shoot a lot.
Things I had to do in the trade period were to get a shooter and a shot-blocking big man. The big man was almost easy to get. I wanted to get a shot blocker? What about a four time defensive player of the year?
I called Houston, and after a few days of talking, I sent Tony Delk and D. Smith (A shooting guard I never heard of before…) for veterans Charlie Ward and Deke Mutombo.
I also talked to the Suns. I got rid of two guys I didn't like in my rotation, and got in return two guys that would start. I shipped Al Harrington (who is too slow to be a running 3, but can't guard 4), Josh Childress (which I really like, but who doesn't shot well enough to be a 2 alongside Smith) and Kevin Willis for Joe Johnson and Walter McCarty.
After those two trades, the line-up looked like that:
Our first game was at home against Deke's former fellows, the Bulls. The game plan was to run them real hard so Chandler and Curry couldn't protect the middle, and to get McCarty a lot of open shots.
In the first quarter, Lue had 8 points (an incredible lay-up on which he twisted to avoid getting blocked by Chandler, and 2 treys, including the quarter's last bucket), and Mutombo had 5 boards. The only problem is I realized Mutombo had as much Stamina as my grandma. I'm gonna have to get him a better back up, cause Drobjnak sucks deeply on D (while on the other side he makes pretty good passes). Also, I will have to sign another back up swingman. Diaw is darm good, but he can't play at both the 2 and 3 at the same time.
In the second quarter, I realized I liked Gugliotta. Never much cared about him before, but he's a pretty strong guy, can play some D. He's gonna have to work on timing his rebounding tho.
At halftime, the score was 42-38 for them, which ain't that bad, but there were two things that impressed me: Lue's 18 points and Deke's 9 blocks. In a singlehalf. And in 12 and 11 minutes respectively… that's 54 points and 29 rebounds on a 36 minutes basis! Lue was incredible… he was scoring lay up
after lay up
after lay up
Man… if that guy could dunk…
In the third, Lue scored 6 more and dished out 3 assists (for a total of 4), Deke got 4 other boards, and we got outscored. Luol Deng and Nocioni were automatic from down town, and they always found way to be wide open, causing us to lose by 10 at the beginning of the crucial quarter.
At the end, we lost by 19 points (95-76). Our shots simply not falling, we couldn't get anything going on offense, causing to frustration and stupid errors on D.
Lue again scored lay up
after lay up (he's right behind those bulls…)
after lay up (NO FOUL?)
Key Stats:
Lue: 31 pts on 13-22 shooting (including 3-9 from beyond the arc)
Drobnjak: 3 dimes in 11 minutes
Deke: 14 boards
O. Harrington: 6 points (on perfect 3-of-3 shooting) and 5 boards in 8 minutes
