ESPNEWS-Interview with ShivaSquad-The Phoenix Suns made drastic changes during the 2003-2004 offseason, acquiring Steve Nash and Quentin Richardson. The trade got the Suns 42 wins in the following season, but no playoff berth. Soon after Kobe Bryant and Tony Parker came to Phoenix in the 2004-2005 offseason.

"Thanks for agreeing to meet with us today. The NBA fans are curious to know where you're going with the team."

"Thanks for having me. As far as the team goes, I think it's quite obvious where we are looking to go. The NBA finals."

"How did the changes occur? I mean before last season your team did horribly, winning less then 25 games. You head into the offseason coming off a much improved 42 win season. Things were going well; young stars such as Amare, Marion, and Joe Johnson were stepping up their game. Instead of working on what was there, you decide to change everything around. Why?"

"Well you bring up some interesting points. Fans and critics fail to understand the big picture. We didn't plan on any of this happening, it was more of a blessing in disguise."

"Blessing in disguise?"

"Yes. We never planned to let Joe Johnson go. He was a hardworker in practice and a strong contributor. He also had strong chemistry with Amare and Shawn. Everything turned around when Joe's agent was hurt personally by our offers. He claimed that he and his client were looking forward to playing for us, but because of our lack of respect they walked. Once we lost Joe, we had to improve our situation at SG. We knew Casey Jacobsen wouldn't get it done."

"So you got Kobe Bryant? Arguably the best SG, and the best player, in the NBA? How the HELL did you manage that?"

(Laughs)"We are just as surprised as you are. The difference in talent in that trade is enormous, but Kupcheck of the Lakers had other ideas. There were several reasons for letting Kobe go. In Rudy's words, Kobe had become "a cocky sonofabitch." This, alongside with the struggling Lakers season, brought the end to the Kobe-Lakers era. The Lakers organization had also been telling us that they wanted Nash badly for weeks, and so we took advantage of it. As much as it hurt us to let go of Steve, we're thrilled about the opportunities Kobe gives us."

"So let's move on. After getting Kobe, you traded for 22 year old PG Tony Parker. Of all the PG's in the league, what led you to Parker?"

"You basically just said it yourself. He's a very solid PG in the league, and is only 22 years old. He gives us the youth that Nash didn't have, and he also fills in nicely for what Nash could do. TP has shown us in training camp that he has incredible speed, great passing, and he's very dependable on the basketball court."

"These trades seem great to the naked eye, but what about the effect that it has on the bench? If we were to compare the Phoenix Suns with another roster today, we would see the best starting lineup, but quite possibly the weakest bench."

"As an organization we understand that our bench is the weakest part of our game right now. We aren't going to set it aside, and we will seek for ways to improve it. On the other hand we expect to see significant minutes out of our starters, so the bench wont't have too much of an impact. All we care about is winning #1 in the Western Conference, and going on to win the championship. A weak bench won't stop us from doing that."

"Final question:
Team chemistry-Do you ever think about whose going to lead the team? Last year it was clear that Amare Stoudamire and Shawn Marion were the leaders. With Kobe coming in, the two stars might feel threatened of losing their star roles. To win a championship, team chemistry is very important. The 2003-2004 Detroit Pistons were a great example of that, as well as the New England Patriots in the NFL. Do you worry that having too many stars will decrease your chance of being the champs?"

"Somewhat. It's hard to give you an answer, because I really don't know. We're in one of those situations where it's either going to turn out great, or it might be a disaster. We also understand that eventually someone will have to step up and take the team on their shoulders. For now we're not worrying about that. We're just worrying about our schedule, and winning our games. I can tell you right now that the attitude in the locker room before our first game was great. The performance of our players (3 players over 20) was proof of that. I have no doubt in my mind that we can keep it up."

"ShivaSquad, thanks a lot for coming out and answering our questions. We hope to hear from you again soon, and good luck during the regular season."

"Thanks a lot, it was my pleasure. I'll see you again at the All Star Break, at which time we'll be atop the Western Conference."
