ESPNEWS-Offseason Acquisitions-"Breathe in through your nose, out through your mouth." That's what you're told to do when in need of calming down, and that's what basketball fans need to do. Calm down. Easier said then done, because it's hard to stay calm after such a hectic offseason, which saw Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, and Tony Parker changing addresses. Many other role players such as Damon Stoudamire and Brendan Haywood also found new homes. The biggest surprise by far in this offseason was the Phoenix Suns, and the role they played. To start the offseason, Phoenix had a 1% chance (no exaggeration) to get a top 10 pick in the NBA Rookie Draft. That's why everyone was surprised when Phoenix won the 3rd overall pick in the draft in the lottery. That was just the beginning, however. After getting lucky with the draft lottery, it was time to re-sign palyers. Steven Hunter and Udonis Haslem were both signed for minimum 1 year contracts. Brandon Hunter and Tierre Brown were dropped, which left 1 player left. Joe Johnson was asking for a 6 year contract worth 48 million. GM ShivaSquad wanted to have enough money to be under the cap to sign free agents, and signing JJ to such a large offer would prevent that. After a week of negotiation, Johnson's agent decided that his client was insulted at my offers, and is leaving the negotiation table. A last ditch effort of 10 mil for 1 year wouldn't budge JJ and his agent, so he was officially gone. This abrupt change in personnel is what brought attention to Kobe Bryant. Without a solid SG in the starting lineup, the Suns decided to go after a leader in that category. What better leader then Kobe? The Suns owner ShivaSquad contacted the Lakers and found that they were in desperate need of a PG. After several days of discussion, Steve Nash and Casey Jacobsen were traded in exchange for Kobe Bryant. Leaving the Suns with no PG, ShivaSquad began to search for a PG that could lead this already talented team. Tony Parker of the Spurs was a perfect fit, and soon thereafter a deal was completed which involved Quentin Richardson leaving for San Antonio, and Parker came to Phoenix. After a long and busy offseason, Phoenix has a fantastic four of Tony Parker, Kobe Bryant, Shawn Marion, and Amare Stoudamire.

Deciding who will lead the team each night will be another challenge, but for now the Suns organization and ShivaSquad is just happy to have added Kobe Bryant and Tony Parker to the roster. "We're done with the Mr. Nice Guy act. We didn't even make the playoffs last year, a disappointing feat after acquiring Nash and Q-Rich. This year we're serious, this year we want to win it all. That's why we're very pleased to bring in a player of Kobe's caliber. He's been there before, and we're ready to follow him on a quest for the championship."

Phoenix Suns GM ShivaSquad agreed to meet and answer some questions about where his organization is heading tomorrow at 3 PM Eastern. Be sure to check it out.

Suns 87 @ Nets 75

Mon Jan 24, 2005 4:53 pm

ESPNEWS-Nets Lose Home Opener-East Rutherford, NJ-Kobe Bryant and the new look Phoenix Suns sported their alternate orange J's, and the fans were ready to see Vince Carter in action. The opener was a disappointment to say the least, as Amare and the Suns came out firing on all cylinders.

Kobe and Co. feasted on the weaknesses of the New Jersey Nets. Amare owned the inside early, going up against rookie James Johanssen, who was quickly overpowered by Stoudamire. This mismatch led to 12 1st quarter points for Amare, who finished with 24 points and 23 rebounds. Surprisingly Kobe didn't come out shooting, and only scored 3 points in the 1st quarter. He did end up with 21 points however, 11 of which came from the charity stripe. Amare's strong play in the 1st gave Phoenix a 10 point lead (25-15), at the end of the 1st quarter.

The second quarter was more of the same, except this time Tony Parker led the break and set up beatiful passes to Bryant and Stoudamire; one of which was a flashy 1 handed alley-oop to Amare. At halftime the score was 49-34 in favor of Phoenix.

In the 3rd quarter New Jersey began to attempt to play defense, and shut down the Suns on the offensive end. On the other side of the court, Phoenix kept up the strong D on VC and RJ. The result was a very low scoring quarter, which saw the Nets outscore the Suns 14-11.

Coming into the 4th quarter Kobe knew he had to prove a point that hes got game, because he only had 10 points going into the final period. Up by 12 points (60-48) going into the 4th, Kobe called for the ball on every possession and got his shots off. Kobe ended up scoring 11 of his 21 in the final 8 minutes.

Overall it was a good first game for a team that hasn't had enough time to play with each other. Each member of the fantastic four scored in double digits, three players over 20. Shawn Marion, who played the role of the silent assassin, scored 21 points. Kobe dropped 21, and Parker notched 10 points and 5 assists. Amare Stoudamire won POG honors with a monster performance of 24 points and 23 rebounds. Phoenix goes 1-0.

ESPNEWS-Interview with ShivaSquad-The Phoenix Suns made drastic changes during the 2003-2004 offseason, acquiring Steve Nash and Quentin Richardson. The trade got the Suns 42 wins in the following season, but no playoff berth. Soon after Kobe Bryant and Tony Parker came to Phoenix in the 2004-2005 offseason. Hairy Face Man=Interviewer. Smiley Face Man=ShivaSquad

Image"Thanks for agreeing to meet with us today. The NBA fans are curious to know where you're going with the team."
Image"Thanks for having me. As far as the team goes, I think it's quite obvious where we are looking to go. The NBA finals."
Image"How did the changes occur? I mean before last season your team did horribly, winning less then 25 games. You head into the offseason coming off a much improved 42 win season. Things were going well; young stars such as Amare, Marion, and Joe Johnson were stepping up their game. Instead of working on what was there, you decide to change everything around. Why?"
Image"Well you bring up some interesting points. Fans and critics fail to understand the big picture. We didn't plan on any of this happening, it was more of a blessing in disguise."
Image"Blessing in disguise?"
Image"Yes. We never planned to let Joe Johnson go. He was a hardworker in practice and a strong contributor. He also had strong chemistry with Amare and Shawn. Everything turned around when Joe's agent was hurt personally by our offers. He claimed that he and his client were looking forward to playing for us, but because of our lack of respect they walked. Once we lost Joe, we had to improve our situation at SG. We knew Casey Jacobsen wouldn't get it done."
Image"So you got Kobe Bryant? Arguably the best SG, and the best player, in the NBA? How the HELL did you manage that?"
Image(Laughs)"We are just as surprised as you are. The difference in talent in that trade is enormous, but Kupcheck of the Lakers had other ideas. There were several reasons for letting Kobe go. In Rudy's words, Kobe had become "a cocky sonofabitch." This, alongside with the struggling Lakers season, brought the end to the Kobe-Lakers era. The Lakers organization had also been telling us that they wanted Nash badly for weeks, and so we took advantage of it. As much as it hurt us to let go of Steve, we're thrilled about the opportunities Kobe gives us."
Image"So let's move on. After getting Kobe, you traded for 22 year old PG Tony Parker. Of all the PG's in the league, what led you to Parker?"
Image"You basically just said it yourself. He's a very solid PG in the league, and is only 22 years old. He gives us the youth that Nash didn't have, and he also fills in nicely for what Nash could do. TP has shown us in training camp that he has incredible speed, great passing, and he's very dependable on the basketball court."
Image"These trades seem great to the naked eye, but what about the effect that it has on the bench? If we were to compare the Phoenix Suns with another roster today, we would see the best starting lineup, but quite possibly the weakest bench."
Image"As an organization we understand that our bench is the weakest part of our game right now. We aren't going to set it aside, and we will seek for ways to improve it. On the other hand we expect to see significant minutes out of our starters, so the bench wont't have too much of an impact. All we care about is winning #1 in the Western Conference, and going on to win the championship. A weak bench won't stop us from doing that."
Image"Final question: Team chemistry-Do you ever think about whose going to lead the team? Last year it was clear that Amare Stoudamire and Shawn Marion were the leaders. With Kobe coming in, the two stars might feel threatened of losing their star roles. To win a championship, team chemistry is very important. The 2003-2004 Detroit Pistons were a great example of that, as well as the New England Patriots in the NFL. Do you worry that having too many stars will decrease your chance of being the champs?"
Image"Somewhat. It's hard to give you an answer, because I really don't know. We're in one of those situations where it's either going to turn out great, or it might be a disaster. We also understand that eventually someone will have to step up and take the team on their shoulders. For now we're not worrying about that. We're just worrying about our schedule, and winning our games. I can tell you right now that the attitude in the locker room before our first game was great. The performance of our players (3 players over 20) was proof of that. I have no doubt in my mind that we can keep it up."
Image"ShivaSquad, thanks a lot for coming out and answering our questions. We hope to hear from you again soon, and good luck during the regular season."
Image"Thanks a lot, it was my pleasure. I'll see you again at the All Star Break, at which time we'll be atop the Western Conference."

Suns Suffer Defeat.

96-102 OT
ESPNEWS-Spurs defeat Suns in OT-Whenever two of the best in the west match up, it's gotta be a great one. This game surely didn't disappoint. When Tony Parker was introduced during the starting lineups, the fans gave him a standing ovation. There were two turning points of the game. First there was Tim Duncan, who scored 29 points and chipped in 11 rebounds. Secondly, Kobe Bryant recorded his 5th foul in the 2nd quarter, and only returned to the game with 1 minute left in the 3rd. He didn't make it till the 4th. In 12 minutes of action Bryant recorded 13 points.

The first quarter was close, as Shawn Marion came out with the hot hand. He scored 12 of his 40 points in the 1st quarter. Duncan scored 10 points in the 1st quarter.

The second quarter saw the Spurs take more of a lead due to sloppy play on the Suns side of the court. Parker seemed nervous and turned the ball over 4 times in the 2nd quarter. This led to many Spurs fastbreaks which let Manu do his thing. The score at the half was 48-41.

In the 3rd quarter Kobe didn't play at all because of foul trouble. Amare wasn't having any success at all this game, because Duncan was completely shutting him down in the post (5 blocks). The 3rd quarter ended with the Spurs managing a healthy 10 point lead, 66-56.

With Kobe completely fouled out in the 4th quarter, and Amare being manhandled in the paint by TD, Shawn Marion knew he had to step it up. Parker led the fast break and sent a couple beautiful passes to Marion on the run, which he finished nicely. Poppavich and the Spurs had to call a timeout with 3 minutes left in the quarter, the game tied 90-90. Both teams clamped down on defense and didn't let any scores, and all of a sudden theres 30 seconds left, tie game, Phoenix has the ball. Timeout Phoenix. Planning to waste the clock and take the final shot, Damon Jones gets the ball and tries to pass it to Parker. The foolish pass gets intercepted by Brent Barry and the Spurs bring it down for the final shot. At the buzzer Barry misses the 3, and we go into OT.

The overtime period was give-or-take until 40 seconds left with the Spurs up by 3. Brent Barry was at the line, able to ice the game if he hit both, or even 1 FT. Amazingly he missed the 1st free throw. Then comes the second, and it clanks off the rim. Out of nowhere Duncan jumps up and tips it back in. 5 point lead San Antonio, and the Suns couldn't bring it closer after that. Great Game.

ESPNEWS-Lakers @ Phoenix-Phoenix, Arizona, What better homecoming could the fans ask for? Kobe Bryant and the Phoenix Suns will play their first home game of the season later this week against Steve Nash and the LosAngeles Lakers. The matchup will be very emotional for both teams, who will see their old teammates playing on opposite ends.

"I'm trying to play it down. We had a great run last year and I don't want to spoil that by making this game more than it is. However, I am looking forward to seeing my old teammates, and playing in my old home court. Other then that, it's just a game," said Steve Nash. Kobe Bryant felt differently. "I can't wait for this, this is the type of game I've been waiting for. I wanna go into this game and prove the Lakers organization what I can do, I'm gonna prove myself. Mark my words: After this game they'll wish they never let me go. NEVER LET KOBE GO!!!"

After hearing those comments ShivaSquad and other members of the coaching staff held a meeting with Bryant. "We just wanted to remind him who he's playing for. He may be a star, but we have homegrown stars Shawn Marion and Amare Stoudamire as well. We reminded Kobe that this team is not a one man show like it was in LA. This team is, exactly that, a team." Kobe didn't say much to the media after the incident, except for a few words taken from Coach Carter. "Hey man, I understand perfectly. If one man succeeds, we all succeed. If one man fails, we all fail. It's a team."

That being said, let's check out the key matchups.

Image vs. Image
Tony Parker vs. Steve Nash. Both players have outstanding speed, court vision, and passing abilities. The only attribute Nash has that Parker doesn't, is the pointblank shooting from behind the arc. TP is known to light it up when he's on fire, but he can be a streaky shooter. Look for Nash to win this matchup, because he'll have to win it to give the Lakers any shot for the W.

Image vs. Image
Shawn Marion vs. Lamar Odom. Two of the most versatile players in the NBA. Both Lamar and Shawn have played PF in their careers, so they know how to get it done downlow. Other then that, Marion has the edge in outside shooting and on the defensive end. Both great rebounders. Look for Marion to shut down Lamar all game on the defensive end, allowing him to win this matchup.

The other matchups aren't looking good for LosAngeles. Watch out for Kobe Bryant, who will go up against ex-Sun Casey Jacobsen. The combination of Kobe's ego and Casey's lack of defense will prove to be lethal. Another matchup is Amare Stoudamire vs. Brian Grant. Amare has the speed on aging Grant, but Grant might be able to hold his own using his veterans defensive awareness. The last matchup that won't turn too many heads is Steven Hunter vs. Chris Mihm. Both up and coming defensive C's that will clean the boards all night.

100-105 Final
ESPNEWS-Kobe's Revenge-October 31, 2005. Kobe Bryant got his trick-or-treat on tonight, feasting on Steve Nash and the LA Lakers. Just one night after a heartbreaker to the Spurs, Phoenix came out and dominated from the start.

1st half-Lamar Odom couldn't get it going, so Steve Nash took the burden on his shoulders. He nailed 2 3's in the half, and finished with 17 points at the break. For the Suns, Kobe didn't come out firing. Instead he did everything else, grabbing 3 boards and dishing out 4 assists. Shawn Marion had the hot hand after a 40 point performance vs. the Spurs, and scored 8 in the 1st quarter. In the end the team play of the Suns outlasted Nash's surge, and Phoenix went ahead 55-49.

2nd half-Kobe began to call for the ball and drove to the hoop, getting fouled by Chris Mihm and Brian Grant. Kobe iced it at the free throw line, and then went on to involve his teammates some more. For the Lakers Odom and Nash got it going, as Odom became the go-to-guy in the clutch. The Lakers played very aggressive in the 3rd quarter and because of it the refs gave them the benefit of the doubt on the calls. Heading to the 4th the score was tied at 78 apiece. In the 4th Phoenix got to see what Kobe Bryant was all about, and tore it apart with 14 points. His clutch performance proved too much for his ex-team, and Phoenix holds on for their 2nd victory of the season. 2-1.

Stats:
Image Kobe Bryant-26 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists.
Image Shawn Marion-22 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals.
Image Steve Nash-33 points, 2 rebounds, 9 assists.

It's a short game recap, because I played this game 4 days ago. Sorry for the late update, my midterms were postponed because of inclement weather (huge snowstorm in the east). Check back for some more updates that I'm going to put up.

ESPNEWS: Two 5-3 Teams Battle it Out-November 14, The Phoenix Suns and the Minnesota Timberwolves are both having successful seasons at 5-3. Kevin Garnett is back contesting for another MVP trophy, averaging 22, 13, and 4. The two teams played 4 days ago on November 10th, and Latrell Sprewell led the charge to a 92-87 T-Wolves victory. Last game Kobe couldn't stop Latrell, so Phoenix might opt to put Shawn Marion on him.

Phoenix won 3 straight until losing two in a row to the Lakers and Timberwolves, respectively. After a victory vs. Boston 3 days ago, Phoenix will try to make it two straight on the road.

Key Matchups:

Image vs. ImageKevin Garnett vs. Amare Stoudamire.
Kevin Garnett will win this matchup no doubt, but by how much is the key. If Amare can hold his own on the offensive end, and try to prevent KG from taking this game over, then the rest of the Suns team will have a chance to contribute. Look for Amare to score below 20 points in this one, with KG dominating him on the defensive end.

Image vs. ImageLatrell Sprewell vs. Kobe Bryant.
Try not to laugh. You'd think that Kobe would dominate our old man Latrell, but that's not the case. At least that wasn't the case on Nov. 10th, when Sprewell won POG with 26 points, leading Minny to a win over the Suns. Sprewell outshot and outclassed Bryant in that game, and Kobe couldn't stop him on the defensive end. If Sprewell can be as productive as before, Minnesota will be tough to stop. With that said, I don't see Kobe letting his guard down this time. Kobe wins the matchup.

Damon Jones is Clutch!

ESPNEWS-A Stroke of Luck for PhoenixNovember 14, Damon Jones' halfcourt attempt fell through the net as the buzzer went off. After a crazy game, Jones capped off his 18 point performance with the biggest shot of his career. "I can't believe it. I just threw it up and grimaced. Never in a million years did I think it had a chance of going in." But it did, and Phoenix improves to 6-3 because of it. Damon Jones not only made the winning shot, but shot a perfect 7-7 from the field, 4 of which were 3's.

1st half-The 1st half saw a lot of defense by the Timberwolves, and a lot of offense by Latrell Sprewell. Spree came out on fire once again, scoring 15 in the half. The other focal point of Minnesota was KG, who wasn't very involved in the 1st half. Although he didn't dominate offensively, Garnett successfully held Amare to only 1 FG. At the half it was a close, low scoring game, 42-39 in favor of Minnesota.

2nd half-The 2nd half was intense, as both teams tried to gain a firm hold on the lead. The 3rd quarter was back and forth, with 4 lead changes and 3 ties. Shawn Marion and the Suns were shooting a low 40% in the quarter, and even worse was that Amare couldn't grab a board. Heading into the 4th quarter Amare only had 3 rebounds, 9 below his season average. The 4th quarter was very high scoring. Sprewell led the charge for the Wolves, and Marion led the charge for Phoenix. With under a minute to go, the fans got something to talk about for days. Let's go to the play-by-play.

The play-by-play"30 seconds to go, Phoenix has possession, down 2. It doesn't get much better then this folks! Tony Parker catches the inbounds pass, and sets up the offense. He runs down the shot clock to 10, and begins to drive. Parker drives to the right, dishes out to the left corner. Marion catches and shoots, avoiding the block. It goes up, IT'S GOOD! MARION HITS THE 3!!! 10 seconds left on the clock, Cassell runs up court, passes to Sprewell. Sprewell drives, gets by Kobe, goes up for the layup, and it trickles in! Wow, what a shot by Latrell Sprewell, Marv. He was able to avoid the block, got hit by Amare Stoudamire, and was able to mantain composure and hit the layup. Sorry to say, but I think Sprewell just ruined any chance for a Phoenix victory. 2.7 ticks left on the clock, and Phoenix has no timeouts. They will have to bring it up the court and hit a shot to win this one, and without a timeout its nearly impossible. Marion throws it up to Damon Jones who tosses a halfcourt prayer... AND IT GOES IN!!!!!!! DAMON JONES HIT THE GAME WINNING 3!!!! AND THE SUNS WIN!!!! THE SUNS WIN!!!!"

The Phoenix bench came erupting onto the court, swarming Damon Jones. The Minnesota crowd was stunned, they couldn't believe what they had just seen. Damon Jones emerged as un unlikely hero, hitting all 4 of his 3s in the game, and all 7 of his shots. After an instant classic, Phoenix moves on to 6-3; Minnesota falls to 5-4. GM ShivaSquad had a few words after the game. "I think we proved ourselves as a team today. We have guys who bring their A game on any given day, and we play as a team. We had 5 guys in double figures. I mean, just look at Amare. He had 3 rebounds going into the final quarter. Do you know how many rebounds he had in the 4th? 11. 11 rebounds in 1 quarter. That's called playing with your heart, never giving up. You can't lose when play like that, and that's how our entire team played tonight."

Stats:
Phoenix:
ImageDamon Jones piled in 18 points off the bench, including the halfcourt game winning 3. He also shot a perfect 7-7 from the field.
ImageAmare Stoudamire only registered 5 points and 3 rebounds at half. He finished with 22 points and 14 rebounds. What can I say.
Minnesota:
ImageSprewell led all scorers with 31 points. Surprisingly, he proved critics wrong and showed that he can outplay Kobe two games in a row.
ImageKevin Garnett isn't proud of his sub-par performance, but he still finished with 16 points and 12 boards.

Image
Kobe was overshadowed on the stats sheet, but he brought energy to the game.

Hello Haywood

Image_____________________________________________________________________Image

The Phoenix Suns announced today that they have a deal on the table involving Brendan Haywood. Suns' general manager ShivaSquad confirmed the rumors, and said that the deal was just awaiting league approval. "We have definitely made a deal with [Chicago], and it should be approved by tonight. Pending the physical, Brendan will be with us in practice tomorrow afternoon." After 4 seasons with the Washington Wizards, Haywood was signed in the offseason by Chicago. Playing behind Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler, it was only a matter of time before Haywood would bid his goodbyes. And no better home then Phoenix. At 6-3 the Suns have a legitimate shot at the playoffs, and Brendan will see an increase in playing time. As a result Steven Hunter will come off the bench. Haywood is exactly what this team needed; a strong, aggressive player, who will rebound, block shots, and provide a strong defensive presence. "I'm thrilled about the trade. I won't miss Chicago at all, I really didn't feel at home there. I've already received a phone call from Kobe, telling me that I better not [bleep] up. He told me that we have a great thing going, so he doesn't want any noobs coming up and messing around. I can tell it's going to be great." As of now we know that Phoenix only traded away a 2nd round draft pick and a scrub, but we'll add the specifics of the deal ASAP.
