Chapter 1: A New Conductor
I let out a steady sigh of relief as I reclined back on my lazy-boy chair and peered around my new office. The pleasant smell of lemon pledge filled my nostrils - the place was immaculately clean. The freshly painted navy blue and dark green walls were covered in team memorabilia, including a signed Pistol Pete Maravich jersey. As I put my feet up on the cherry wood desk (which is retrospect, was probably frowned upon), even though I was nearly 700 miles away, I couldn't help but remember how cramped my dorm room was...
Growing up in Long Beach, California, I only ever loved one thing: playing basketball. Like most kids my age, I grew up idolizing the likes of MJ, Shaq, and The Admiral. My favourite player, however, was Cali’s own Jason Kidd. I remember growing up being appalled by his hairstyle, but mesmerized by his pass-first mentality, grit and knowledge of the game. I did everything I could to model my game around the great, Jason Kidd.
In the summer before highschool, all we ever talked about was making varsity. We spoke of the numbers we would wear, the roles we would take on, and of course, how all the girls would love us. Instead of telling an elaborate story about how I led my highschool team to three straight National championships, I’ll spare myself the ridicule: in my four years at Jefferson High, I never made varsity. As a matter of fact, I never even made JV. That was that. Quite simply put, the skinny kid from Long Beach, California, was not cut out for basketball.
With my dreams of playing in the NBA long forgotten, I accepted an offer to the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California – maybe I couldn’t play for the Trojans, but no one could stop me from cheering for them!
After a semester and a half at USC, I had earned a co-op internship as a front office executive of the Bakersfield Jam of the NBADL. Although it sounds exciting, I was more or less an errand boy. Through sheer hard work and determination, however…
A loud knock at the door awoke me from my day dream.
“Come in” I hollered, curious to know who my unexpected visitor was.
“So you’re the new assistant GM, eh kid?”
“Yes, I am” I responded, trying not to sound pretentious.
“Nice to meet you. I hate to rush things, but it’s time to meet the team. Grab your coat, kid, it’s a cold one!”

I'm guessing Jazz or Hawks, since there was a mention to the Pistol Pete jersey
