Team History

The Los Angeles Clippers first came into existence as the Buffalo Braves in 1970. The Braves were one of three expansion franchises to join the NBA that year (the Portland Trail Blazers and the Cleveland Cavaliers were the other two), as the league dueled with the upstart American Basketball Association for prominence. After struggling through their first few campaigns, the Braves soon found playoff success under the coaching of the legendary Dr. Jack Ramsay and high scoring Bob McAdoo. Unfortunately, drastic changes in the organization's ownership during the 1976-77 season threw the team into a tailspin, resulting in back-to-back losing seasons.

Following a proposal by then-NBA attorney David Stern, the Braves were allowed to leave Buffalo after the 1977-78 season for San Diego. The deal was a complicated one, as Buffalo Braves owner John Y. Brown traded places with Boston Celtics owner Irv Levin. Levin, a California businessman, was unhappy in Boston and relished the opportunity to own a team in his home state. Levin immediately renamed the club the Clippers due to San Diego's bustling harbor and seaside locale.

Under Levin, the Clippers posted respectable records, but could not seem to reach the playoffs due to a loaded Western Conference. In the Clippers' first San Diego season, their 43 victories were impressive, but just shy of playoff caliber. That year, six Western Conference playoff teams tallied at least 45 victories.

After missing the playoffs for the third straight year, Clippers ownership again changed hands as Beverly Hills attorney and real estate mogul Donald T. Sterling purchased the team in June of 1981. Despite the play of new additions Tom Chambers and Terry Cummings, the Clippers continued to struggle in San Diego over the next few seasons. Injuries plagued the team and box office numbers plummeted. Finally, with attendance averaging fewer than 4,500 fans per game for the third consecutive season, Sterling moved the team north to Los Angeles in 1984.

On November 1, 1984, the Los Angeles Clippers debuted at the Los Angeles Sports Arena with a 107-105 win over the New York Knicks. The arena became the team's home for the next fifteen seasons, during which the franchise snapped a playoff draught, hired NBA legend Elgin Baylor as Vice President of Basketball Operations, and landed 2 #1 overall draft picks in a 10 year span.

The 1998-99 campaign marked the Clippers' final season at the L.A. Sports Arena as the team again changed addresses. In 1999-00, the franchise moved just up the street into the new state-of-the-art STAPLES Center in downtown Los Angeles. The transition to STAPLES Center resulted in record-breaking attendance marks for the Clippers and the franchise extended their lease for an additional 10 years before the start of the 2004-05 season.

Front Office

Vice President of Basketball Operations:

Image
Elgin Baylor

In April 1986, the Los Angeles Clippers hired Baylor to serve as the team's vice president of basketball operations, a position he continues to hold. After a disastrous 12-70 season in 1986-87, Baylor slowly molded his squad into a playoff contender. Los Angeles improved slightly in each of the next five seasons, peaking at 45-37 in 1991-92 and earning a playoff berth for the first time since the franchise was known as the Buffalo Braves in 1975-76. The Clippers reached the postseason again in 1993 but have continued to experience down years with hopes of greater expectations.

Head Coach:

Image
Mike Dunleavy Sr.

Mike Dunleavy enters his second season as Head Coach of the Clippers, guiding the team to a 28-54 record. Dunleavy, who owns a .490 (426-444) overall career winning percentage as well as six playoff appearances, also has a trip to the NBA Finals and an NBA Coach of the Year award on his resume. His 426 career coaching victories currently rank him sixth among active coaches on the all-time NBA list.

Assistant Coach:

Image
Jim Eyen

A 13-year veteran NBA assistant coach, Jim Eyen enters his second season on the Clippers' bench under Dunleavy. With 25 years of coaching experience under his belt, Eyen served as a scout in 2002-03 for the New York Knicks. He originally began his career with the Clippers in 1988, serving as an assistant coach under then head coach Don Casey. The following season, he moved to the Lakers, assisting Pat Riley and was retained when Mike Dunleavy was named Lakers' head coach in 1990. After three seasons with the Lakers, Eyen followed Dunleavy to Milwaukee, where he remained through 1996. In 1997, Eyen again joined Dunleavy, only this time in Portland, where he worked as an assistant through the 2000-01 season. When Dunleavy was named head coach of the Clippers prior to the 2003-04 season, he again asked Eyen to join him as the team’s lead assistant.

Assistant Coach:

Image
Kim Hughes

Beginning his second campaign on the Clippers' bench is Kim Hughes, who came to Los Angeles after serving the previous five seasons with the Denver Nuggets. Hughes began with the Nuggets in 1998 as Director of Scouting and was subsequently named Director of Player Personnel. He moved to the bench as an assistant coach prior to the start of the 1998-99 campaign. Hughes also spent seven seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, as head scout during the 1997-98 season and as a regional scout during the previous six campaigns.

Assistant Coach:

Image
Rory White

Former Clipper player and CBA head coaching veteran Rory White enters his second season with Los Angeles as the third assistant on Dunleavy's bench. White, who was the head coach of the Idaho Stampede (CBA) during the 2002-03 season, had a five-year NBA playing career during which he averaged 7.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 16.7 minutes per game. White's NBA playing career included three and one-half seasons with the Clippers (1984-87), after being drafted by the Phoenix Suns (fourth round of the 1982 NBA Draft) and playing a partial season with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Assistant Coach:

Image
Neil Olshey

Neil Olshey enters his second season with the club and his first in his current role as an assistant coach. Olshey joined the Clippers as Director of Player Development prior to the start of the 2003-04 season. Olshey’s responsibilities include working closely with the players on an individual basis in order to assist them in developing a more extensive offensive skills package, offensive scouting and game plan preparation.

Assistant Coach:

Image
Neal Meyer

Rounding out the Clippers' coaching staff is Neal Meyer, who also enters his second season on Mike Dunleavy’s bench after serving as an advance scout for the Portland Trail Blazers during the 2001-02 season. Meyer was with Portland for five seasons, working in positions ranging from Assistant Coach to video coordinator. Prior to joining the Blazers, Meyer worked in a similar capacity with the Denver Nuggets, where he also served as camp director of the Nuggets youth camps held during the offseason. Meyer got his NBA start when he held the position of assistant video coordinator for the San Antonio Spurs in 1994.

Team Info:

Offensive Strategy:

Inside Triangle Offense (Triple Post Offense) -

The triangle offense's basic ideas were initially established by Hall of Fame coach Sam Barry at USC, and his system was later refined by former Kansas State University head basketball coach and current Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Tex Winter, who played for Barry in the late 1940s.

The triangle offense differs from other offensive philosophies in basketball in that the offensive players are much more spread out than normal. There are many options designed within the offense for the purpose of getting the ball to the low post. Quick passes and cuts toward the corner baseline by the guards are featured prominently in the offense as well. Also, players are instructed to move to certain spots on the floor and know where the rest of their teammates are on the floor at all times. Often the defense dictates which cuts and/or passes will be made by the offense by the way they choose to defend the triangle.

Critics of the triangle offense say that it is too difficult and time-consuming to learn. However the Chicago Bulls, led by head coach Phil Jackson with help from assistant coach Winter, won six NBA titles in the 1990s playing in the triangle, and the Lakers have won three championships since Jackson and Winter became Lakers coaches and taught them the offense. NBA greats such as Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Shaquille O'Neal had never won NBA championships before their teams adopted the triangle system.

I'm more interested in your players than the coaching staff to be honest.
Anyway since you're on PS2, I'm wondering what you're going to come up with to make up for the lack of pics (no offense, just curious).

My only real question though: bring the Clippers back to what?

Fantasy Draft Results

Using the draft randomizer I set it up so that I would pick in the middle of the pack, not wanting to wait all day to land on pick 15 I fianally settled on the 13th pick.

Round 1:

Image
Jason Richardson
Position: SG/SF
Height: 6-6
Weight: 225 lbs
College: Michigan State

Has good vision on the court , Has a tenacity for rebounding, unbelievable vertical. Has developed a nice mid-range, and is becoming very good at hitting the three pointer. A major workhorse, always critical of his game always trying to improve it. Loves to play in the transition. Very exciting to watch because when the ball is in his hands, something exciting usually happens. Really loves to play in the big games.

Round 2:

Image
Corey Maggette
Position: SF/SG
Height: 6-6
Weight: 228 lbs
College: Duke

On the break, he simply seems to possess a gear that other players simply din't have. While not a great ballhandler, his quickness makes his crossover a devastating weapon. In addition to being quick, he is also strong, with his sculpted physique being put to good use in going after boards. His quickness allows him to grab a lot of boards and tip in rebounds for dunks.

Round 3:

Image
Emeka Okafor
Position: PF/C
Height: 6-10
Weight: 252 lbs
College: Conneticutt

A tremendous rebounder and shot blocker. Emeka is an extremely intelligent and hardworking player with a great future ahead of him. Okafor possesses unbelievable shot blocking instincts, making him a true difference maker on the defensive end. He is excellent at timing his jumps and moving his feet to alter shots. His intelligence and athletic ability has also made him a proficient rebounder and outlet passer. Offensively he shows good touch and a nice assortment of post moves. His jump shot is really developing and in time will become a nice weapon. In addition, he has good footwork and is very coachable.

Round 4:

Image
Jason Hart
Position: PG
Height: 6-3
Weight: 185 lbs
College: Syracuse

Tenacious defender. Has good size for the position. Has point skills: handle, passing, and quickness.

Round 5:

Image
Lorenzen Wright
Position: C
Height: 6-11
Weight: 240 lbs
College: Memphis

A little bit undersized for the center position. Not likely to pass the ball once he recieves it in the paint. Good mobility, good rebounding skills, and skilled on the offensive end. Nice hook shoot and a very effective baseline jumper. He's a double-digit scorer when given enough playing time. Must improve conditioning.

Round 6:

Image
Kyle Korver
Position: SF
Height: 6-7
Weight: 210 lbs
College: Creighton

Intelligent player who shows great court awareness, plays under control and every move on the floor is thought out. Although a great shooter he is a very capable passer. He does a nice job of recognizing open teammates on the fast break, and his solid court vision makes him a consistent threat to pass to cutters under the basket. When working off screens he needs little time to get his shot off thanks to his quick release. Mechanics on his jumper enable him to shoot over most defenders as his height and high arc make him difficult to block. A consistent threat behind the 3-point line and has the ability to make any shot off the floor if his feet are set or if he is running of screens. Decent rebounder for a player at his position. Excellent free throw shooter. Moves very well without the ball in hands when he is running off screens. Despite his scoring prowess, Korver is a very unselfish player and has tremendous work ethic and hunger to become a better player. Confident player who doesn't shy away from the ball when the game is on the line.

Round 7:

Image
Mickael Pietrus
Position: SG/SF
Height: 6-6
Weight: 215 lbs
College: France

Athletically he is an explosive leaper capable of creating some impressive dunks. Defensively he shows above average lateral quickness and long arms to disrupt passing lanes. Owns a nice hesitation move to gain separation from his defender on drives, wonderful finisher in transition where he makes full use of his athletic ability in the open court. Plays defense with passion and intensity.

Round 8:

Image
Brevin Knight
Position: PG
Height: 5-10
Weight: 170 lbs
College: Stanford

Plays under control and makes good decisions. Great quickness, and an excellent defender on the ball. Hard to see him missing that 18-foot shot and is not a threat from beyond the arc.

Round 9:

Image
Luke Walton
Position: PF/SF
Height: 6-8
Weight: 235 lbs
College: Arizona

Walton has the potential to be the best passers in the NBA outside the point guard position. Makes his reads quicker than most of the league's starting playmakers. That skill, combined with improved shooting and ideal size at the small forward position, will give Walton a 10- to 12-year career.

Round 10:

Image
DeSangana Diop
Position: C
Height: 7-0
Weight: 300 lbs
High School: Oak Hill Academy HS

DeSagana Diop is a very athletic big man. he's 300 pounds and runs the floor like a small forward. He's very fast. Coming from Senegal, Africa, he's only been playing competitive basketball for a few years so he figures to get a lot better. Right now his best asset is his defense. He can hold opposing centers virtually scoreless with his smothering style of defense. He is a very good shot blocker, and can also help out and block other opposing players shots.

Round 11:

Image
Eric Snow
Position: PG/SG
Height: 6-3
Weight: 205 lbs
College: Michigan State

Although he lacks natural scoring ability, he has improved. He's a clutch player capable of playing top-notch defense and has a solid understanding of how to run an offense.

Round 12:

Image
Kwame Brown
Position: PF/C
Height: 6-11
Weight: 243 lbs
High School: Glynn Academy HS

Like Garnett, KB has freakish athleticism. Already bulkier than Garnett and could turn into more of a Webber type post player. Very graceful running the floor. Tremendous leaping aility. Passes and handles extraordinarily well for a 6-11 player. May still be growing. Touch on shots is excellent, and should only improve. Post game is solid. Very good shot blocker.

The Clippers were once a decent to good team and have made the playoffs a few times. Hopefully I can get them back to that level and hopefully further. Your right though the Clippers have pretty much stunk it up their whole existance.

Pregame

Seattle Supersonics (0-0) vs. Los Angeles Clippers (0-0)

Los Angeles (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers look to avoid a season opening loss when they host the Seattle Supersonics tonight at the Staples Center.

After finishing last season on a sour note loosing 14 out of their last 15 games and missing the playoffs once again the Clippers want to get out to a fast start on the season to avoid any lingering effects of last seasons poor performance.

The one bright spot from last season, Corey Maggette who scored 20.7 ppg was retained and will return with a new cast of stars. Joining Maggette will be Jason Ricardson and rookie star to be Emeka Okafor.

Jason Richardson who last season scored 18.7 ppg to lead the Warriors is on the cuspt of becoming an NBA superstar, and has become a household name after winning the slam dunk contest both in 2002 and 2003 joining only Michael Jordan (1997 and 1998) as the only two players to win back-to-back slam dunk contests.

While Emeka Okafor is only a rookie all he did his senior season was lead the UConn Huskies to a NCAA National Championship. He was a National Player of the Year candidate and started all 67 games in his two seasons, averaging 11.8 points, 10.1 rebounds and 4.4 blocked shots per game. Has 28 career double-doubles... Holds the UConn career record for blocked shots with 294 (4.38/game) and holds the top two single season marks for blocks with 156 (in 2002-03) and 138 (in 2001-02)... His 4.38 career blocked shot average is No. 7 in NCAA history and the best overall average in BIG EAST history.

With the newly aquired talent head coach Mike Dunleavy has decided to implement the inside triangle offense to highlight the skills of Richardson, Maggette and Okafor. Not only does he hope this will lead to increased production out of his stars, but that the new offense will lead the Clippers to the playoffs as teams running the triangle offense have won 9 of the last 14 NBA Championships.

It will not be easy to start off hot as the Sonics come in sporting a superstar cast of their own. Steve Nash joins the Sonics after leading the Mavericks last season in assists with 8.8 per game He will be joined in the backcourt with Larry Hughes who averaged 22.0 ppg last season.

Look for this game to get off to a frenzied pace and come down to the wire.

Starting Lineips:

Supersonics:

Eddie Curry - C
Troy Murphy - PF
Glenn Robinson - SF
Larry Hughes - SG
Steve Nash - PG

Clippers:

Lorenzen Wright - C
Emeka Okafor - PF
Corey Meggette - SF
Jason Richardson - SG
Jason Hart - PG

Recap:

Clippers Cruise in Season Opener

Image
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 3 (Ticker) -- Jason Richardson proves to be the star.

Newly aquired SG Jason Richardson walked away with player of the game honors by scoring 25 points as the Los Angeles Clippers halted a streak of seven losses in season openers with a 103-90 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.

Richardson was 11/21 from the feild and added 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals for Los Angeles. He was the star of the first half scoring 17 points while Corey Meggette was held scoreless facing tremendous defensive pressure from Glenn Robinson.

Up by 3 at the half coach Mike Dunleavy finally got Meggette on track scoring all of his 11 points in the second half by going to the line 3 times going 5 for 6 and hitting 3 of 5 from the field after starting off 0 for 6, which allowed the Clippers to extend their lead in each of the final two quarters.

Seattle was lead by Steve Nash who scored 31 points and dished 4 assists. Larry Houges and Glenn Robinson added 13 and 18 points respectively as the Sonics mounted a failed comeback by socring 26 points in the fourth quarter.

Emeka Okafor scored 8 in the final quarter and 17 in the game to thwart the Sonics comeback effort. Okafor added 8 rebounds and 4 blocks in his outstanding NBA debut.

After the game the threesome of Richardson, Meggette, and Okafor said they are having fun playing together and look forward to the season ahead.

Pietrus will probably stay right around 15 mpg as he's got J-Rich in front of him. Walton may be hard to get him more as at PF he's got Okafor and Kwame in front of him, and at SF he's got Meggette and Korver. Right now Walton is my back up incase either my backup SF or PF go down. He'll move up once he gets to training in.

If I were use I wouln't use Diop at all, using Brown at backup C and Walton at backup PF. Korver is suited more to a SG role off teh bench, while Pietrus' athletiscism makes him better for the backup SF role. The only one that is burned and should get dumped to the IR is Diop, IMHO.

Pretty good suggestion. The only reason why I like Diop is he's 7-0 300 lbs and plays pretty good defense.

But now that I am thinking about it Lorenzen Wright is basically an older version of Kwame. I may try moving Kwame to C and making Walton the backup PF. Then use Diop against the bigger C's in the league ie Shaq.

Pregame:

Los Angeles Clippers (1-0) vs. Portland Trailblazers (1-0)

PORTLAND (Ticker) -- Jason Richardson looks to continue to provide a spark for the Los Angeles Clippers when they face the Portland Trailblazers tonight for the first time this year.

Aquired during the off-season Jason Richardson collected 25 points and 4 rebounds Wednesday as the Clippers posted their first season opening victory in the last seven years, a 103-90 win over the Seattle Supersonics.

Waiting for the Clippers is Elton Brand who exploded with 33 points and 7 rebounds in the Trailblazers first game of the season. Brand will look to continue his stellar play as he led the Clippers the last three years in rebounds with 11 per game. Brand left the Clippers in a bitter disput with management over the direction of the team.

Due to the rift Brand became expendable when the Clippers selected Emeka Okafor in last years rookie draft. Okafor had 17 points and 8 rebounds in Wednesdays game and will look to flurish against one of the leagues top power forwards.

All the ratings were made using actual statistical data from nba.com and 82games.com. When all that was factored in Kwame Brown was rated 47 ovr. Kwame up to this point has been a major disapointment, considering all the hype surrounding him coming into the league.

One thing that was done was all the jump ratings were halfed to help with blocks which really hurt the overall rating of some of the big men since that seems to be weighed heavly in their rating.

Recap:

Clippers hold on late

Image
PORTLAND, Nov. 5 (Ticker) -- Emeka Okafor proves it was a good move letting Brand go.

In Okafor's second game he won Player of the Game honors, held Elton Brand to 18 points who in his previous game scored 33, grabbed 13 rebounds, and 6 blocked shots while recording his first double-double of his young career as the Clippers defeated the Trailblazers 104-99 Friday night.

The Clippers played inspired defense throughout the game but despite limiting the Trailblazers to 90 points through 46 minutes found themselves only leading by 1. When Lorenzen Wright and Jason Richardson combined to go 6 of 8 from the free throw line to put the game away in the final minutes.

Corey Meggette chipped in 17 points and 3 boards while Jason Hart had 12 points and 6 assists.

Quentin Richardson scored 24 and Richard Hamilton chipped in 25 for the Trailblazers but recieved very little help. Devin Harris was 4 of 15 from the field and Vlade Divac was limited to 6 points.

Jason Richardson once again led the Clippers for the second night in a row with 33 going 14 of 21 from the field and adding 3 rebounds.

The 2-0 start marks the first time in over 15 years the Clippers have been undefeated after 2 games.
