Orlando MAgic Dynasty.. Fantasy Draft...

Postby spunk23 on Wed Mar 17, 2004 1:39 pm

I got a call form the league office.. they told me that after the recent blowout in the Collective Bargaining Agreement Negotiations.. all contracts were nullified and that the NBA is at a standstill!!!!

It was really hard keeping it together but anyway the owner of the Orlando Magic called the league and told them that they need a gm who can bring back Orlando Magic to it's glory days with shaq and penny... and after all this contracts reset.. they now' don't have the burden of grant hill's contract.. and they can rebuild again!!

bad news is.... at the draft.. we are picking number 29!! o man!! so i quickly ask myself can i do it??? only time would tell....

i pooled up all my colleagues and asl the same question.. they told me to go for it,, and that they are here with me... yeah orlando may be 29th.. but it's a good city that attracts players.. and with more management it won't be hard to land a superstar....

so the countless days begin as the draft started... and tried to have my mini wishlist....... here are that comes to my mind...

Lebron James ==> he is the phenom but i don't think he will get drafted before falling to my laps.... with too many good players in the league.... this will be my snag if it became my way... i would surround hin with veterans and make a defensive minded team with lj at the anchor....

or...

Pau Gasol ==> will i get him? he has a rather high stock.. but chances are if he would slip to me.... with him i can run fast paced basketball by adding another quick point guard in the second round...

or...

maybe not the two if i could get a steal at the draft? maybe i could land VC.. he has injury problems.. but i would bet for him to hold it for me....

well in going to the war room now..... help me god.....

THE WAR ROOM

So i entered the room filled with all of my top trainers, scouts and coaching staff... I can't help it... they looked too sad because of that damned number 29.... I told them to cheer up.... we could make it... we would still get the top 29 player right?? that's not too shabby.. would you rahter have deshawn stevenson be your top player... and beside we are not here to pick up stars.. we are here to make a team.. wth the right structure we can do it....

but suddenly mitch kupchak... peeked in our room and shouted tmac is going to LA!!! well I hope he stinks there... no way should he have picked tmac over kobe.... but no way im dealing with them.. seriously i might get deshawn stevenson...

one of the staff approached me.. "sir.. the draft has started........"

I turned to my coach.........
"So Johnny waht do we have?"
"We have lots of players to choose from... K.Martin could be good pick but i doubt if he would be able to thrive without a good pg... R. Lewis is also a good player to pick. but he is a better second option than a leader..."

"Sir why don't we take Stojakovic?" an assistant said...
"Not much facet in his game plus we also need a franchise player the one that can bring fans to the arena" I said...

"We have big guys here that are capable... Amare and Ilgauskas.. blus don't forget Big Ben...."

Yeah too much many to choose from.. and everyone want a big man in this league today i can have actually 4 to choose from... Martin, Ben Wallace, Z, and Amare......

ORLANDO you have 2 minutes...

"I wanna take Lebron" I said...
"But you know what happened to T-Mac and company.. we tried that before it did not work... we need a big man as a cornerstone.." Johnny said... "plus in our situation... if we passed on a big man now.. we might not get another capable man..."

"Still I want Lebron!!" I insisted... those big guys may be important but they cannot carry a team.....

so even with the glare from johnny (It's been only the first pick and he's getting to my nerves!!) I took the call....

"We pick Lebron James"......

"tsk tsk.." I heard from Johnny...

"Trust me in okay?"......

I immediately got out the war room to light up... as a reporter tapped me in the shoulder....

"Sir any comments about the first round?"
"Well the order of the first 10 picks is questionable..... even more for the next 10... some guys don't deserve to be in there...... that's almost a good thing I thought Yao woul fall to us..." I said.

"Does that mean you would take Yao over Lebron?"
I grinned "No comment, all I know is that if it's not Yao i won't bother for another big man to lead the team.."

"How about T-Mac getting first pick.....?"
"Well he has to prove a lot considering that he would have the stronger talent around him against kobe... Still ill say again.. I'll take kobe over T-Mac... I may be wrong but we'll see what happens this season... and look it looks like teams prefer guards to lead the team than big men.. the game has changed.... even shaq who expects to be pick first.. cried.. i know he would do good in Detroit. Bad thing is Duncan is in the Atlantic now..... bad for us"

"Who would be your next pick?"
"Coach says big man... I say point guard....." depends how the 2nd round goes...."

Then I got back to the War Room as slowly the second round starts....

Thanks now i will make it as clean as possible....

The War Room - 2nd Round

"Okay what do we have here?"
"It's getting bleaker by the moment sir", one assistant said. "All of the players on the top of our list are crossed out and it's only the 14th pick... Interesting, after that circus in the first round all the teams are firming up"
"Well still early to judge what the competition looks like, but i think we will be getting a point guard now, right dingclancy?" Johnny said.

I was thinking at that time... who do we get... yeah we definitely need a point man who can run fastbreaks and feed it to finishers like my guy Lebron. I also want someone who is good on the clutch and can inspire the team to win. I guess we will have to pass on the big man. Im sure we can get something decent the next turn anyway. I just want a killer point guard.

Orlando your turn....

I looked into my own list (I have one on my pocket, don't trust the staff of Davies much). "Hey, we have a good one here!" I wrote the name on a post-it then passed it to my personal assistant. "John Gabriel, make the call."

Orlando Magic picks... Mike Bibby!!!

Johnny looked at me.. a grin... "Nice call", he said...

Bibby has always been an MVP player for me since that clutch performance in Sacramento. He is a mature enough player who makes the right decisions and can distribute the ball to the right guy at the right time. By drafting him I would expect that my team shares the damn ball and move without the damn ball. For me he is a premier point guard and he should not have slipped this far.... Hell if Lebron can't get out of his shell, he might even lead the team in scoring. Not too shabby...

Johnny whispered "Two good picks, no big man yet".

I have something in mind.... "Hey Davies why don't you go to the Sacramento war room and have lunch with Rick or whatever. See if we can get a trade for their biggie.... just preliminary... tell him i can give anyone... " (Just get out if this room) I thought...

With hesistation he said "Okay"

Now that's done i gotta get back to the drawing board. I'm pretty sure there is still many young centers out there who can deliver... I just want a more fluid team like the Dallas once were... I don't want the opponent's defense collapasing on anyone.......

I hear guys on the Scouting committee smirking and i asked.... "what's interesting?"

"Sir if you haven't noticed, Allen Iverson was drafted by Utah"
"Yeah hehehehe.... AI may consider being a Mormon or else..." anyway back to the draft board....

War Room == Rounds 3 and 4

dudududum......

Im now thinking of adding a young forward to the team who is fundamentally sound and can clean up the boards. This is harder than I imagine. I better pull of some good trades before the season starts or else the owner wpuld kick me out.. if he cares enough..... I decided to build the team around Lebron, proven player or not... i know I have to get my vet sometime.... I just hope that the biggies fall into place.....

"Sir our turn once again" said Gabriel.
Hmmmm.. that was fast...I gave him another post it... "okay make the call..."

The Orlando Magic picks Troy Murphy....

The coaching staff looked at each other...They seem to be looking for their immediate boss... that was a surprise... yeah they think that our chances are bleak.... but not that much to get Murphy...

Well Troy Murphy is the most solid PF left.. not to mention I want someone who I believe can break out too with Lebron James. He has very good fundamentals, knows the game and just cleans the boards for a white guy. He is also an excellent team player. Besides, i don't wanna carry luggage o shit with the players that the staff wants... Griffin? give me a break...

Well we still got a veteran to look for and I know exactly who I want. He may be so underated now but my competitors will pay for that... good to start? maybe.. but he will defienitely be a closer....

As the fourth round got set, this time slowly as it became more crucial with the chemistry and all..... There was a call on the phone...

"Hei ding you picked Lebron over Amare e?" Isaiah Thomas said
Man this guy is too cocky... I admit he will have the better team.. Imagine Finley at swing, then he got Amare.

"You know I won't pick somebody just to get that player away from you..." (Why would I? Im picking 29)

"So what are your plans" I asked
"The east will be stronger I think given that we have most of our teams on the middle of the draft board. Still have to check though, but I would tell you this would be the toughest division this year and only two teams in the atlantic would go over .500, you know who they are" Isaiah chuckled. "We would just have to fit the X's and O's amd everything will fall for us"

"Man, just get back to your work and we will see what happens on the season opener" (I hope we beat you....)

"Sir it's our turn"
"Okay make the call!!"

The Orlando Magic picks Reggie Miller!!
"OOOhh reggie? too old i suppose?" Isaiah bellowed once again
"The guy's clutch okay? you know him.. you coached him remember? He still has 2 years left in his legs and he is still the deadliest of shooters. Great complement to Lebron"
"It's your team man!! Just be careful with all the hype and stuff! thank you for picking LBJ over Amare" and the phone clicked...

that was an insult... i'll show him on October 30....

Man... the fifth round.. this day could be long...
oh wait.. there is a player here that is on my list since the third round and still not picked on the fifth!! I hope a miracle happens and no one picks him!!

Orlando Magic!! your turn...

"I will make the call myself"....
"We pick our center, Erick Dampier"

"Orlando Magic picks Erick Dampier!"

Applaud boomed through the war room. Obviously he will be giving the much needed toughness to our team. Plus he is already a valuable veteran talent and he already played alongside Troy Murphy. This is our poor man's Ben Wallace. We know we would not have a problem in teh rebounding department with him. What a pick.......

Well the day is over. I'd better check on what Davis has with Rick... maybe he has something interesting after all.

The bench draft would be wrapped tomorrow!.. I can't wait....

We'll see what the press has to say tomorrow on my selections..

Orlando Magic Unveils Starting Five
Erick Dampier to be the man in the middle

The fans of the Magic have found new hope as General Manager Dingclancy has revealed the five starters with the Blue uniform. This franchise hopes that these starters would turn around this city again as a basketball town since Shaquille O'neal bolted out of the team.
(02-03 averages)
A look at the starting five:

Mike Bibby (15.9 ppg 5.2 apg 3.2 rpg 1.1 spg)
He is expected to break as a top 5 guard in the league since he is about to enter his prime. He could also really deliver on crunch time and could actually come out as the team captain since he has the ability to hold things together for the team.

Reggie Miller (12.6 ppg 2.4 apg 2.5 rpg)

Reggie would provide the needed veteran leadership for the last two years of his career. He is also expected to contribute more with his genius and would show the how the league works to our rookie phenom, Lebron James. Also, it would be foolish to discount his long range shooting just because he is 38.

Lebron James
One line: Rookie of the year.. then 10 time All star... but he would be clearly better than that...

Troy Murphy (11.7 ppg 10.2 rpg)
He should be breaking out anytime soon. This would be a good chance for him to thrive in this league or break his career. Troy could be compared to Dirk Nowitzki with his ball handling and outside shooting and he would be a perfect fit for this running team.

Erick Dampier (8.2 ppg 6.6rpg 1.8 bpg)
He is clearly the tough guy in the middle for the Magic. His job is to be a rebounding machine and look for quick footbacks. Erick is also expected to post double-double averages taht will help the team in their campaign for the playoffs.

Overall this team hopes to provide balance on the franchise. The rlando Magic is not expected to lean on one player wholly but to share the ball and excercise teamwork on and off the court. This team, although it lays a foundation for Lebron, should also step up when called for. Let's see if they can make a run for the playoffs.

Wrappin UP!!

I came in the room early morning when I saw that Johnny Davis was already there. He is an early bird e?

"Johnny how's your talk with Rick?"
Johnny: "It's okay, he would see how the draft would go first before he talks to anybody. But we have discussed some scenarios and he told me we will be getting the first crack of whatever they have."
"Okay.... I need to talk to you. I know we have discussed about how the team would work. Obviously we won't get any flexibility in our situation right now, but I think we should be getting young guys who have big potential and easy to teach too. I don't want crybabies here. We will have them working hard, setting this season as a building year then hopefully they break out the second year. I think you know who they are." I looked at him seriously.
Johnny: "Yeah, thinking Utah Jazz with Lebron at its anchor?" He paused to think "Hmmm... yea we have the right guys out there. Sir, I agree. It's high time that we add maturity and toughness to the organization"
"Nice! I think we are in the same wavelength already on who to get for our bench players." I took my little paper out from my pocket and gave it to him. "These are some of the players on my list. I have to go talk to the boss. You can lead on from here."
Johnny: "Okay" He looked at the paper "These are the players that I have in mind! hehehe"
"I gotta get out of here. Roll them Johnny!" as I left the room.

----------------------------------------------------------

Devos: "So, so far what's our financial situation?"
"Easy sir! The only player that will cost us much is Mike Bibby which will take up 9 million for 6 years, and you know that he's worth it anyway. The other four starters will only take up about 15 million of the cap space then with the bench Johnny would be getting, we project we would be around 10 million below the cap. Not bad, since we really don't need to bring in superstars next year, except if Sheed is available. But things can change sir."
Devos: "So you're confident with the team that we are getting?"
"Yes, the draft is not finished but we would be running like Sacramento in no time. Plus. we have the big fish in Lebron to bring in fans back to the Arena. And I think we could do well whatever happens next year. If we lose, we could say that the players are still young and that what you get when you pick 29th. If we are winning, we could be the darling of the NBA. We have nothing to lose here and much to gain. But, sir I have to be honest that our division would be tough. We can be running from the 3rd spot in the division to the bottom of the barrel."
Devos: "How about the coaching situation?"
"We'll let him test the waters first, give him a grace peiod or something I prefer Rudy Tomjanovich for the team actually but it's just fair that we give him a chance. I just don't see him bringing that toughness to those guys especially defensively. But everything can change in a week"
Devos: He looked at his clock. "About time for my golf, thanks for coming in, nice call on Lebron by the way, that could be our fourth superstar up ther with Shaq, Penny, and T-Mac"
Ooh Golf! man does he really care? Works for me I don't have someone lurking at my back. "Bye, sir"

As i got out of the room, there was a TV there with ESPN on. Oh the recap of the draft! Let's see what Johnny got.

"The Orlando Magic picks for the 12th round: Mike Pietrus"

============================================

Wow Johnny delivered for me this time! This could be the best young team in the league and we finally got our balance here!!
Let's see..

Chris Andersen
High flyer, one of the quicker PF, has strong fundamentals much like Troy but more raw. But we can work him out, no prob. CHECK!

Carlos Arroyo
Yeah he showed the league his basketball IQ, much like Bibby who knows how to make the right decisions and deadly on the perimeter plus he is like Parker when he penetrates the defense. Just need to show him how the system would work for him coming off the bench. But I like this guy. CHECK!

Maciej Lampe
Tooe early I guess, but he should deliver since he is actually expected to be a lottery pick. He can play 3 postions much like Dirk. Wow! with him we have three of the better young fundamental big men on the league. Nice rotation for us. CHECK!

Deshawn Stevenson
Yeah he could break out anytime soon. Always liked the guy since traded to us for Giricek. Hard worker and the talent is there. He would be a good player of fthe bench for Reggie.. He also knows the Sloan system too so he knows how to work. CHECK!

Gordon Giricek
Yeah he's back! He is our perimeter threat! and he will probably start anyway if Reggie's play goes down. one of the reliable shooters and he would be a great backup for us. He has shown us he is a capable scorer and understands the game very well... CHECK

Mark Madsen
Heheheh...could be the heart and soul of the team! Mr. Hustle!!! nice to have him here!!

Mike Pietrus
This guy would be in the doghouse until he's ready and eventually can get a starting spot.... he can be a deadly threat especially with LBJ.

Overall... wow this could be the most exciting year for me!! can't wait for it to start...!!! All of these are on my list.... what a sucker the coach is.. hehehehe!

As I came back to the War Room I hear the loudest cheers ever. This team is our future and I can't wait future to start!

Yeah there's many left.. but i figured.. if i need a guy who would just stand up and hit open shots... why not him? plus his contract can be off the books since he would likely retire next season.. Im thinking sheed or martin..

SG Reggie Miller
PG Mike Bibby

PF/C Chris Andersen

ESPN HOTSEAT

Anthony: With us tonight is the man to bring the Magic in it's past glory, Mr. Dingclancy. This past few days must have been a busy one for you as it was for everyone involved in the NBA draft...

Me: You're right! It's been crazy in that room. Our staff has been working for 48 hours straight trying to figure out things that make sense. We are here to build the best team ever in the young history of the Orlando Magic, and I think the fans here deserve another shot at the finals.

Anthony: Many people have asked your selection of Reggie Miller in the fourth round. They feel that the hall of famer does not deserve to be drafted that high.

Me: Well I will tell you now that his selection was one of the easiest that we made in the draft. His value as a veteran leader and clutch player will be most important to us. In the end I see him bringing us deep into the playoffs, when we get there This man would bring some toughness to the young guns here plus I'm interested in what he can bring to our organization after he retires.

Anthony: But there are surely other players in that niche that could fill him up.

Me: No one close. Of course most of my colleagues would have picked a young talent to backup the King but that's why I picked him is because I think Lebron can rise to the occassion given the proper outlook in this league, and I am very sure Reggie will bring him that. Plus he is always the guy who Lebron can pass in the wing for the easy three. Nothing has changed much in his jumpshot

Anthony: Now you say you are here to assemble a "tough" team and go for experienced players. Your selections sure ain't any of that.

Anthony: Well, Johnny and I have said from Day 1 that toughness would come if we have the right BALANCE in our team. Picking unproven players doesn't mean that they are not tough! These guys we picked are very hardworking players with very solid fundamental knowledge of the game and zero big heads. Plus look at our leaders, Bibby, The King, and LBJ. I say that toughness comes from within and if my team work their butts everyday you'll see the toughest team since Jerry Sloan's Utah Jazz

Anthony: You're saying that you feel that Miami is the team to beat in the tough Atlantic division.. With New Jersey and New York close behind.

Me: If you look at their roster the only questionable pick is George Lynch at small forward. But overall, This is a no brianer considering Dirk AND Brad at the frontcourt with M.Redd and J.Williams at the backcourt. These four knows how to play fast break baketball at it's finest, and with Brad Miller plus the bench with Nene, Eric Williams and Brendan Haywood this could be a scary team because of theri legitimate post presence coupled with a running game. With New Jersey you can never discount a team with Tim Duncan, then we see that they have added a versatile player with J Mash plus a penetrating point guard better than Parker with Gilbert Arenas! This team is like San Antonio moving to the east coast. But their bench will make them pay. Jason Caffey? Luo Alston? Bob Sura? It does not fit with the first five that they have. New York is the definition of "talent" and "athleticism" with Finley, Amare, Magloire, Butler.. Plus a deep bench. They can be a playoff team if they work things out, but with all the talent they got it's just like filling the holes even if it does not fit.

Anthony: Is the starting five fixed as a rock?

Me: In my opinion that would be the case. The only question is where we really wanna play Lebron, two or three? Lots of stuff going on in there plus Gordon Giricek can start to replace Reggie if we need the spark on the bench. The training camp has not started so there is no sure assessment on that particular matter

Anthony: Thank you for your time, Mr. Dingclancy.

Me: Okay

Anthony: This has been the ESPN hot seat with the General Manager of the Orlando Magic, Mr. Dingclancy. Good night all.

good job with the budweiser hot seat. i use to make interviews like that in my nba live leagues online with my team. i also used stuart scott as the man interviewing me. i really hope you do start giricek over miller, because for some reason i just dont like the fact you picked reggie over many other sg's in the draft. other than that, i love the dynasty. keep it up :D

sorry to disrupt you hear buddy, but personally i don't like Fantasy draft, you can get a really good team in the draft...i tried it a couple of times and got a roster thats 12 guys deep. Also, when you go to play the game you have no idea of your opponents, i don't like that

I agree with that. I hate it when you have to play a game and all of the teams are scrambeled. The only way you know who is on the opposing team is to go to Reorder Rosters and look.

Hey Spunk, you got a pretty good dynasty going. Good to see something different.
Looks like a winning team, except for one guy in the starting lineup; Troy Murphy. Just asking, but was there anyone better or was he the only power foward rated the highest at the time?? Otherwise, I like the reports, and the hotseat. Get a few more games under your belt and she'll be sailing smooth!

The NBA schedule has been announced abn Isaiah's boys will be first up on the list. Whew this would be interesting... First game of LeBron on Madison Square Garden.. I slowly walked into the practice facility where most of the players have arrived and had already started their shootaround....

Swak!!! Nice shot by Erick their... he should start being a low post presence for us immediately and I told him he has to develop that. I also noticed the three other big men joking around at the bleachers; Chris,Troy, and Maciej. Hmmmmm.... this trio would be interesting because if developed properly they could be the most fluid frontcourt in the Atlantic... they can bring the ball up... solid basics, plus they have sweet jumpers. There would be some competition between Mike and Carlos Im pretty sure. I've always bellowed that Carlos can be top 5 point in five years or so... good to have him to backup mike bibby although I guess this can be bibby's team heheheh. Lebron over at the other half of the court doing some one on one plays with reggie... Now this is where reggie is valuable, being able to be a mentor for LeBron plus still the clutch man. The other players are there setting up drills and so far I really like what I see in Gordon and Deshawn Stevenson. I better tell Johnny that we have to try Deshawn at point guard too. The hustle player Mark MAdsen is always at Hard drills... that pleases me.... Plus the French gu Pietrus watching Lebron shoot.. hey man he better shoot himself.. oh well...

"So johnny what are the guys doing??" I asked
"The are just on a break. Their trainig is tougher than I would regularly give them"
"Okay hehehe so any initial assessment?"
"I think we should be putting Gordon Giricek at 2 and have Reggie come off the bench. Well I agree with you about being the clutch presence and how he can still change the game at his age but... He's too old! he's not gonna be able to bang bodies all the time plus I notice after 7 minutes of scrimmages he tires down that Gordon can outrun him at both ends at that point. This is not good especially because we will have to match up on our opponents, not the other way around."
"LeBron is down pat at 3 and I have seen him run the lanes and he is unstoppable!! He is also a very good cutter.. moves well without the ball he just have to work on his jumpshots more consistently but I predict he would bring it. He can score 27ppg for us no problem!!!" He smiled "What worries me is how we play the bench.. we can really be deep if we want us to be.. I guess we have to develop a 10 man rotation....We have to get everybody lots of playing time so that everybody will be given a chance" "but it still remains if they can deliver because we have lots of minutes where we there would be no starters on the floor....."

"How about Deshawn can he play point?"
"Yeah he could, because Im considering putting Carlos Arroyo at 2 spot .....he is a great playmeker plus he is deceptively quick!!!"
"decepetively quick eh? now that's a term"
"It's true!!! look how fat he can look.. he is a litle big for a pg.. but still as quick as any pg out there... we have really no problem at pg spot if you ask me..."
"Ok play your cards carefully Johnny I guess im not gonna make any moves first.. let's see how this would all work out"
"Okay ding, i got your back"
"NO INJURIES GUYS!! FIRST ONE WHO GETS INJURED WILL BE FINED!!!" I lied hehehe...

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The Training camp is done and my boys are ready... All the pep talk is done..... now I say let's go on to New York and bring on the knicks!!!!
