Hangtime was an amazing game, but I've found that when most people think of NBA Jam/arcade basketball, they're thinking about Jam TE.

The Jam name is more iconic. All the same, I consider Hangtime to be the true continuation of the original series.

Oh it is. I often wonder how different arcade basketball gaming would be if Midway was able to keep the NBA Jam name. Maybe NBA Jam: Hangtime becomes even bigger, especially if they kept Tim Kitzrow as announcer.

We probably would've had a couple more great games under the Jam brand in the 90s and early 2000s. I think the technology had to get better, though; what EA Sports did with On Fire Edition was really impressive. The Real AI borrowed from Fight Night made games less repetitive, and more challenging without the need for rubberband AI.
That's kind of a problem with the older arcade basketball games. They get a bit repetitive, and the challenge isn't always fair, because they're designed to keep people putting money in the machine. It's like the continues...excuse me, Kontinues....in the old Mortal Kombat games. It makes sense for the actual arcade machine, not so much for the home ports.

You're quoting a post from 2014 there, when Ellis was indeed with the Mavericks.
