By far the Xbox 360 game that made me drool the most at E3 was Take Two’s NBA 2K6. Though we only got to see it in a short demo film, the players, crowds, and environments are the most realistic we’ve ever seen in a sports game.
For a moment I seriously thought I was watching taped footage of a recent NBA game; only upon looking closer did I realize I was watching actual footage from the game. Gone are the days of unnatural character movements and not-quite-real-enough physics. From every Lebron James jumper and Shaquille O’Neal dunk you could tell this game is going to knock people’s socks off. Those of us lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the short video were all caught off guard, as if we didn’t think graphics like that were possible at this early stage of the system’s existence. At one point Shaq was jogging down court after a made bucket only to turn to ready up for defense, wipe the sweat from his brow, then find his man and D up. The players’ physical movements and actions were exactly akin to their real life counterparts. It simply looked too real to be a video game. Quite often you’d hear the words, “that really does look like Shaq, really.”
The crowds were also the best we’ve ever seen in a video game. I think crowds have often been overlooked in video games as far as creating a realistic environment. Similar to how a tree needs to sway in the wind to be considered realistic so to a crowd needs to be animated to create an immersive tone. While games in the past have shown crowd animation, they were mostly done as an afterthought, pasting a couple of characters wearing similar Polo shirts and copying them a thousand times to recreate a crowd. It never felt quite like an NBA crowd, until now. In both the Xbox and Xbox 360 versions of NBA 2K6 crowds are much more animated and individual. Watching the video gave me the sense that this will be the first time in video games that the player will get a true sense that they’re playing in front of a realistic NBA crowd. No word yet on if you can make the crowd in Detroit riot or not, but stay tuned.
Not to offend any Madden fan boys out there but NBA 2K6 was by far the best looking sports title on the 360. No other sports game, or any other game for that matter, could step up to the graphic quality and physical realism that NBA 2K6 showed us. It looks as though Take Two has put in it’s time to make sure this is one of the most gorgeous Xbox 360 experiences we’ll have in the console’s first generation of games.
