illini wrote:I gotta disagree with you Andrew. Clerks II is hilarious, i cant realy deny it, but its far from the caliber of the first clerks. Its so hollywoodized and completely invalidates the enitre first movie. Of all his characters, these were his best but he forgot who they were while making ths movie. Although i love the LOTR bit and of course the interspecies erotica scenes

But Kevin Smith is never going to make another movie quite like the original Clerks because he's always going to get a bigger budget, bigger names and more publicity. I'd have to disagree that Clerks 2 didn't do justice to the characters as well, in particular there was a lot of Jay and Randal stuff in there. The characters however, like Smith, are older now and so their perspectives have changed somewhat. As Smith himself said, they are now representing the mindset of thirty somethings rather than twenty somethings.

As I said, Smith can't really do another Clerks like the original because he's not an unknown filmmaker putting together a movie with the grittiness and budget of the first Clerks anymore. Clerks 2, like all Smith movies, remains highly focused on the dialogue and doesn't resort to excessive visual gags, obtrusive "artistic" camera angles or pans and special effects; now that would truly be going Hollywood. Even if Smith did try to replicate the original Clerks, it would no doubt come off as simply rehashing old material which wouldn't be any more entertaining.

But the problem with having them still be Clerks 10 years later i have is at the end of the first one it was supposedly a life altering day. Apparently it wasnt. There was some great character development of Randle in Clerks II, but Dante was still the same whiny little bitch...last until towards the ending. I think i just love the original too much; it was impossible to recreate and make a sequel anywhere near the same caliber and i wish he had tried to sequel one of his movies i loved less. Jay was still the same idiot as always, just not AS sex-crazed. *shrugs* like i said, still love the movie, find it to be one of the funniest i've seen in a long time. Hell i even like the new character of Elias...but i just dont think a sequel that entirely cancels out your first movie is acceptable. I know he explains it, but that doesnt make it make any sense when watching the first one.

He tryed to be artistic with the camera angles in certain scenes; like when he was doing circles around Dante/Randle outside that time...and about the visual gags? you dont call the entire mooby's an excessive visual gag? It was at the same time a McDonalds port as a rip on all his old movies. I just think he should've done something new rather than try to use his old characters in a idfferent way.

Randal pretty much summed up Dante's problem though. The events of the original Clerks should have (and seemingly did) open up his eyes by its conclusion, with him resolving to make changes in his life and yet he never followed through, finding himself in the same situation ten years later. We'll probably have to agree to disagree here but I don't think the sequel cancels out the original in any way. At worst it's an epilogue to the original movie and series in general.

There were artistic camera angles but they were hardly excessive. The strength of Smith's movies is always in the dialogue, with some of the most entertaining scenes involving nothing except a couple of characters having a conversation and the ensuing back and forth between them. You're right, there are visual gags and he's always used them but he's never relied heavily on them and the same goes for Clerks 2. They're present, they're obvious, but they're not obtrusive.

At the end of the day though I enjoyed Clerks 2 just as much as any other Smith film which is why I have to put it on a par with the others, though critically speaking I believe it stands strong as well.

Which movie should I take a girl to watch?

Thu Mar 01, 2007 8:39 pm

I haven't seen all of them as yet, but I've read about most of them. So here's my take.

Ghost Rider - If she's in to superhero movies, I suppose you could take her to that. From what I've read though, it's a stupid movie.

The Good Shepherd - Very good movie I've been told, a serious movie, not really a date movie I'd think.

A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints - A DVD calibre movie, the child actors are superb. The adult actors (Downey Jr, Dawson, Robers) don't have much of a role, it's more about the few kids and their story. It's a good movie, atleast I liked it...but it's not a date movie.

How To Eat Fried Worms - From the name of it alone if I asked a girl to go watch that she'd give me the "wtf are you on" look.

The Illusionist - Now here's a good date movie. It has pretty much everything, drama, suspense, the love quotient and superb acting. This would be recommended if she isn't an overly girly girly girl. If she appreciates fine cinema, this is the one.

Man of the Year - I've read good things about it, but it comes off as a DVD movie to me. Not theatre worthy. If I'm wrong about the movie, feel free to correct me. If she's a fan of Williams, perhaps this could be a good choice? Still doesn't win out on Illusionist though.

Miss Potter - British cinema, isn't it? I don't like Renee Zelweggar (sp?) so yeah, I wouldn't suggest this one. Heard it's done good business though.

Music and Lyrics - The previews of this film just started in the theatres, the two girls that were with us during the previews seemed to be quite excited about it. It's one of those quircky, lovey dovey kind of movies. A total chick flick, if the girl you're planning to take is a girly girly type girl and prefers candyfloss romance opposed to fine cinema, this wins over Illusionist. (Sadly, women are that silly.)

Norbit - Are you on crack? Seriously?

Notes on a Scandal - Old women's movie. My mom and sis very much enjoyed it, when I inquired about if I would, they both agreed that I wouldn't. As they put it, it was a good movie for them. I don't really like Cate Blanchett either. Not a date movie once again.

Pan's Labyrinth - Good reviews on this one, I'll get it on DVD. It's in Spanish and it's fantasy, unless you want to be reading subtitles, I wouldn't suggest this one.

The Queen - Mirren acted really well, but it wasn't a wowie type movie. Quite slow in my opinion. Not a date movie either.

Rocky Balboa - If she's a fan of the Rocky series, she'll like it. I've noticed Rocky fans have liked this movie whereas casual movie go'ers somehow expected more. As a Rocky fan, I felt it was a good way to end the series, a realistic way to end the series.

Wild Hogs - Guy movie, not a date flick.

Winners would be The Illusionist in first spot & Music & Lyrics a close second. Atleast you won't be bored in Illusionist, the both of you will enjoy it. In Music & Lyrics, chances are that she'll enjoy it more than you. Then again, you're ghey, so you might enjoy it aswell. :P

Just playing Jugs, you know I love you. Enjoy the movies! Let me know which one it became eventually.

Thu Mar 01, 2007 8:45 pm

I would recommend The Illusionist as well (Y)

Norbit or Music and Lyrics.

About Man of the Year:

The downfall of this movie was it was advertised as something it wasnt. They made it out to be this lighthearted comedy about a comediean becoming president when it was really trying to be a political thriller about espionage and conspiracies in the voting booths. While there are some hilarious scenes and some excellent one liners, there always will be in a Robin Williams movie. As for it being a date movie? Nah too serious. You need to tread that fine line between funny/serious for a date movie. Is there a reason it has to be a semi current flick jugs? DVDs work just as well for dates as paying for a movie does

Are you stupid, or do you want her to hate him forever? Possible the worst movie ever, and I'm not using hyperbole, the movie is toxic.

Fri Mar 02, 2007 9:34 am

I actually head it was pretty funny. I mean, I wouldnt watch it but from what I've read people enjoyed it I would think.

Sun Mar 04, 2007 7:00 am

I watched Clerks, and Clerks 2. The first one was better in my opinion. Kevin Smith is a genius. Anyone who can make a day working at a convenient store funny is amazing.

Sun Mar 04, 2007 11:26 am

:?
I thought it was funny..
Each to their own bro.

Sun Mar 04, 2007 7:51 pm

just finished Jet Li's Fearless and I gotta say it was a pretty damn good movie. The fight scenes were good as expected, but the story was a pretty good one too.
SPOILER Shitty ending, but that's how the dude supposedly died. dang i would've liked to see him survive and go back and bang the shit out of that blind chick lol
It kinda got me thinking during and after the movie, like how The Last Samurai (one of my favorite movies of all time) did. Very interesting as far as philosophy goes and how to live your life and carry yourself. I like those kind of movies. I would recommend it to everyone here, especially if you're Asian or Chinese or of Chinese descent.

has anyone here seen Hannabal Rising?
silence of the lambs was on the other night at i enjoyed it, so i might go and see how it all started and watch rising, any comments?

Sun Mar 04, 2007 11:33 pm

I haven't seen it yet, I'm going to buy the book on Tuesday though.

I'm going to take Hannibal Rising as a book/movie on it's own. Nothing to do with the Lectar Trilogy. Meaning I'll keep an open mind, I liked the order of the books. (Have the Omnibus.) Anyways, it's much better to read/watch it in the correct order. Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs & then Hannibal. The books were so much more superiour to the movies, but yeah, I suppose that's what you get when you try to put sheer brilliance on celluloid.

A Hannibal movie without Hopkins though, mmm... :(

Mon Mar 05, 2007 10:20 am

Watched Jesus Camp.

Evangelists are some of the most brainwashed fucked up religious people I've ever seen. Good movie, but really disturbing how they're able to get kids to cry, speak in tongues, and have seizures in the name of Jesus.

Yeah, that blows. I thought Red Dragon was the final installation of the series.

300 looks like a cool movie. I liked how they alluded to that story in The Last Samurai before their last battle.

I've heard from like a dozen people that this movie is pure shit. Have heard mixed reviews of Carey's performance, but its been unanimous that the plot, and supporting cast were all horrible.
