Cheap but effective players

Postby Wuschel on Sat Jul 30, 2005 12:44 am

While playing Live 05 I came across a couple of players that are quite affordable, but still effective if you play the games yourself and don't sim your dynasty.
My favorites are:
Tyron Lue; Quick point guard, threat from the outside and opens up my outside shooters with his crazy drives to the hoop. Plus, he's not that bad on defense in spite of his size. He's the player I'm best with in clutch situations.
Mamadou N'diaye: 7footer who can dominate the boards and gives my team a great shotblocking presence, while off course pretty useless on offense except for the occasional dunk or tip in.
Kyle Korver: I'm using him as my backup SF, he hits most of his perimeter shots and since he's young theres always room for improvement. Unfortunately he's a torrero on defense...
Jerome Moiso: Blocks, rebounds and dunks good enough to make most of my teams. Lawrence Funderburke offers equal qualitites for less money

Shawn Bradley/Dikembe Mutombo: Ok, I know this sounds funny, but once Shawns contract runs out you can get a powerful force on defense for little money. Same with Mount Mutombo.
And last but not least: Wesley Person: IMO he's one of the best role players in Live 05.

Well, I'm looking forward to your suggestions!

Thanks. This is my first post here, but I read a couple of threads and thought I could come up with something better than another one of those "how do I get Lebron and Dwyane Wade to sign with my team without trading any of my go-to-guys"-threads. But feel free to offer your own suggestions, since I always got a couple of roster spots to fill.

You know Live's gameplay is whack when people like N'Diaye and Bradley are dominating on defense...

I'll add Eric Piatkowski to the list. He can't do much except shoot, but more than once he's knocked down a bunch of threes to get me back into the game. I actually won a game after a very exciting comeback led by Pike, who hit about 7 threes in the fourth quarter alone. That was a pretty rare performance, but he's usually effective in limited minutes as a shooter off the bench.

I love Kapono and casey jacobsen, i use kapono as a SF, whenever the CPU gets out to a 10 point lead and my starters are tired, i dump Jacobsen and Kapono on the court and between them they can knock down 4 3's out of 5 shots if you know how to get them open!

Add Eddie House to the list too, hes great on the steals and a solid shooter, great backup PG

Steve Smith and Dan Dickau are both good but I like Janero Pargo myself. He isnt the best player but he is good and cheap.....just a thought tho...

Yeah thats true. I had Pargo on my team as well and he can shoot the lights out and defend his opponent. However I traded him because he was a little inconsistend (and because I REALLY wanted to get Rashard Lewis :wink: )

Speaking of PG's, another guy who comes to my mind is Charlie Ward. He's a decent shooter and passer and made a couple of my teams.

Then there's always Mikki Moore, a player who can be signed for the minimum, but who is tall and a good rebounder, dunker and shotblocker, especially usefull if your starting PF is more offense-minded like, say, Dirk or Radmanovic.

pargo is definitely a good player used him a lot. traded john salmons to get pargo he is awesome started a lot of games at PG (cuz AI wuz injured) did really well one game hit a fadeaway 3 to tie it with 'bout .9 on the clock.

As for other dirt cheap players i like steven hunter. backup C, hes a great shotblocker.

Ak-47 must be the greatest cheap-but-effective player. :lol:

Mount Mutombo always retires at the end of the 1st season,maybe we dont have the opportunity to offer him a new contract,hehe.

Recommend some cheap-but-effective role players as follows:
S.Diop(Cavaliers):
Hes strong enough,offers the team post-depth as well as block.What's more,hes still young & potential,given some training on shooting,he will have a more promising future. His contract seems a bit big,but considering its running out the next year,it's still wise of you to get him if you want to supply your team with power and shotblocks.You may offer him a long-term contract without breaking the bank.Comparing to his overall rating,his defense is not that bad.
(Ovl:45; Blk:80; O.Reb:68; D.Reb:75; Strgth:96; Ins.Scr:59; Age:23; Salary:2.7M; Yrs Remain:1)

L.Barbosa(Suns):
A speedy PG with accurate outside shooting and effective defense.Another PG with bright future and moreover he has great potential to get better at the age.The Suns obviously have not offered him fair market value. :o
(Ovl:61; FG:70; 3PT:80; Stl:80; Speed:93; Quick:88; Age:22; Salary:870k; Yrs Remain:3)

B.Haywood(Wizards):
He can do all necessary as a center,his salary doesnt match his well-allround play.
Though he will be a free agent the 2nd year,he wont ask for an extravagant contract I believe.
(Ovl:63; Blk:85; O.Reb:80; D.Reb:80; Strgth:84; Hardy:72; Ins.Scr:81; Age:25; Salary:1.74M; Yrs Remain:1)

Walter McCarty
Jason Kapono

they hit 3s like water

underrated defenders that get the job done

both of them are rated overall in the 50s

Diop, definitely. He's a good blocker, and teams tend to double him because of his strength/size, so it's easy to get an open shot. He's still young too, so good cornerstone for the bench.

DeShawn Stevenson can dunk very well, he can slam it down. Just think of him as steve francis only he cant play defense so well. He is very easy to get 20 pts with. Also, Eddie Robinson, or E-Rob. He 6'9'' but plays sg/sf. He can dunk extremely well and has a fast symbol, so he can really cut into the lane and dunk over people. He is a free agent as well so if you have the cap space sign him.

Yes, DeShawn has quite some potential... Has any of you guys ever developed Mickael Pietrus? He is a very explosive dunker, can shoot the three and after a couple of years he should also be able to dribble good enough to drive to the basket. In one dynasty he became my second go-to-guy alongside T-Mac and even went to the Allstar game ;)

Well,about Jerome James: He can dunk, rebound, block and is quick enough to run the break, and those things are all I usually expect of my center.

I wanna add two more cheap but effective players: Udonis Haslem and Steven Hunter.
Haslem is very cheap in the game and he is a monster rebounder! Same as Hunter, he can rebound, block and dunk
