Why players miss dunks

Thu Jun 09, 2005 5:14 am

i do alley-oops a LOT in the game...maybe 15 times a game, and it's an easy basket about 12 times or so. i play the bulls and hinrich is an excellent PG, with curry and chandler usually doing the finishing. i think the key is to be slightly off-center to the right of the 3pt line. get as close to the 3pt line as possible. if the guy in the post is not trying to box out but is instead just standing there (whether he's waving or not), hit the alley-oop button and it's an easy 2 pts. i can even get non-typical finishers like othella harrington and luol deng to complete alley-oops on a regular basis (i play on all-star).

but anyway, my question is regarding the 3 or so misses. when they miss, it's not b/c of a pass into the wing or the lob goes out of bounds. what happens is that the finisher will grab the lob and -- CLANG -- miss the dunk. i'm thinking this is more a function of the finishing player's attributes (INSIDESC rating, maybe?) rather than the execution of the play itself b/c Tyson Chandler, for example, misses dunks more often than Eddy Curry, who almost never misses a dunk.

and then on fast breaks or just going strong to the hoop, players miss dunks too. in one recent game, my team must've had over 10 missed dunks. that's at least an extra 20 points that i should've got but didn't

any thoughts on why players miss dunks? is it a slider thing? is it a players.dbf attribute? or what???

In your game, have you turned on CPU assistance? If you have, your players will miss easy shots for the CPU players to be able to catch up.

If it is on, try turning it off.

Thu Jun 09, 2005 5:52 am

no, cpu assistance is off.

Thu Jun 09, 2005 6:06 am

I always thought CPU assistance was to help you make shots.

everytime i go to do an alley oop, he throws it to some guy between 15 feet and the 3 point line and he swoops in and cant catch it, even if there is a guy right under the basket, so i never use it. But then again i play on superstar level.

Thu Jun 09, 2005 6:22 am

are there a lot of missed dunks on superstar?

Thu Jun 09, 2005 9:23 am

Hes prolly playing in Starter or Rookie mode ;p

I miss 12 out of 15 ally oops in superstar mode, even when the guys calling for the ball, open on the break, passing from inside the 3 pt line!

I have yet to complete a successfull alley-oop with Wade as a finisher. He just can't get them in,despise his high dunk rating. The passer is usually D Jones who has fairly high passing skills. (N)

Dunno which "he" you're talking about, but I already said that I play in All-Star mode.

And just for kicks, I played Superstar for the first time last night (just for a few minutes, since I got home late from seeing the digital version of Revenge of the Sith last night :D ) to see if there's a big difference in whether I can still do alley-oops. And in 2 of the 3 possessions I played, I did alley-oops (the third time, the post player was trying to box out so I know an alley-oop wouldn't work). The first alley-oop: Tyson Chandler grabbed the lob but missed the dunk. But the second time, Chandler finished it.

So on Superstar, I already got it down 1 out of 2 times (and it should've been 2-for-2 if he didn't freakin' miss the dunk). So I've got the alley-oop down to a science, even on Superstar mode...just can't figure out why players miss dunks!

I suppose it's quite realistic though, have you ever seen a game in which they make more than 4-5 alley oops? So I guess that's their way of keeping it real.

Try putting Wade as a '4' (power forward). I've got Wade finishing alley-oops like mad.

 People already say he's undersized as a 2 ,but what's it gonna be like as a 4? CA-RAZY!

I wouldn't want to sacrifice Haslem, just so Wade can slam down alley-oops 24/7 but thanks for the advice. :D

I know, I know... :D ...i'm just saying that it (Wade finishing an alley-oop) can be done in the game...not that you should play Wade as your starting 4. he does get shoved around back on defense

what i would do in superstar to have a good chance of making the alley-oop is i iso my best passer in the center then off-ball to my best dunker....then the dunker, which is the one i'm controlling ,will set a quick pick to the ballhandler then i let the dunker slip pretty quickly to the basket then press the alley-oop button....i probably make it around 60%....they still miss it even though it's pretty much open... :D

no its like fifa series.when u rin professıonal, goalkeeper is better. It's like that!

Sat Jun 25, 2005 2:14 pm

one tim i miss like...7 dunk in a row

Sat Jun 25, 2005 7:05 pm

In my dynasty there was a game against Raptors (my team - Warriors)
They did like 4 alley-oops... That was the first time (all 4 assists to Rafer "skip to my lou" alston) some team did so many alley-oops...
My team (I play in superstar) usually does 1 or 2 alley-oops in the game sometimes none... (That game I did an alley-oop with Pietrus).
Maybe the frequency of alley-oops depends on the player who throws the assist :?
on his playing style... I mached it because in AND1 they do many many alley-oops..

Sun Jun 26, 2005 12:14 am

ya...but we talk aboute dunk missed

Sun Jun 26, 2005 5:52 am

oi.... i'm sorry :)

Sun Jun 26, 2005 6:26 am

whatever,in alley-oops,i think cuz the player had no good overall in passing

Sun Jun 26, 2005 5:58 pm

Maybe players miss dunks when they have low stamina????

Mon Jun 27, 2005 12:20 pm

have u ever played with the off-ball feature? playing off ball and using the right analog stick to move around (espescially on fast breaks) can really get your alley-ooper clear of the defensive player. id say that my alley oops, using off-ball, are completed 80% of the time during a game, and i usually make about 5-10 alley oops... although i admit that its probably easier for me to complete alley oops-my dynasty is the nets.

I play without fatigue effect

I play without fatigue effect

 is that interesting????

 Than maybe it's the dunk rating... (however I have never missed a dunk with Andris Biedrins)

i play with the off-ball and my guyz very often can't make alleyup in the fast break with no defenders i play on superstar

i play on superstar too... and my sliders favor the comp i would say. i guess i just know how to affectively use it; or it could be the combination of good passing (kidd) and good dunkers (carter & jefferson).
