Basketball newbie !

Sat May 21, 2005 8:51 am

Hi Y'all,

Basketball is not a widely played game in my country, I myself have never even played a real game of basketball. Through playing NBALive 2005 and a post to this forum, I've pretty much figured out the rules and associated jargon. There is however still a couple of things I dont know or understand, so your help once again would be appreciated.

What the hell is a Double Double, Triple Double and Quadruple Double ?

Out of curiosity what difficulty level do most ppl game the game on ?
(I play on "Starter")

Another thing, I play the default 5 min per quarter, and battle to score a 100 or more points in a game(without overtime), in an entire season I probably achieve this 3 or 4 times, yet in the simulated games almost every game has scores that exceed 100 points. The CPU controlled teams also have stats that are in many case double what my stats are, including minutes played. Do they go into overtime almost eveygame they play (in which case I suppose their stats are valid) or is this because the simulated quarter length is too long (default of 12 min) ?

Thanks,
k1rr3d

Double Double- when player gets stats( such as points, rebounding, assists, blocks, etc) that are or bigger than 10(i.e. If u get 10 points and 10 rebounds- thats a double-double)
Triple Double-when player gets 3 stats that are 10 or bigger than 10
Quadriple Double- when player gets 4 stats that are 10 or bigger than 10

I think most of the ppl play on All Star( I play on Superstar)

Because in your dynasty, u set ur sim quarters to 12( CPU played games) and thats why they average a lot and u don't!

Thanks !

What do you recommend the sim quarter length should be ? are there any other settings that you would recommend ?

I really suck at rebounding, especially offensive rebounding, any tips ??

Busy with Playoffs, after that I think I'll try my hand on All Star.......

Thanks,

Actually I'd say most people here play on Superstar, 10 minute quarters. For settings go to the sliders thread, that'll have what you need.

Btw you can swear here, shit shit shit shit.

What I hate about Superstar is that you're all on your own on defense. :| (N)

On Defense I just try to stay close to my ooponent, and when he shoots I switch to my C or PF and grab the rebound if the shot doesn't go in!

The shot is more likely to go in if you don't contest it though.

can you control who you switch to, and if so how ? Actually does anyone know how the switching works, on D (see, I've learn't the jargon) do you switch to the player cloest to the ball ? sometimes I get my switching all messed up and end up with a player contesting the shot on the opposite side to where the ball is, and then it looks like hes doing some ballet move.

Then when attacking (on O, just didn't seem right) who do I know who you are going to pass to ? often Im staring at the C in a good position, I hit pass, and some other turkey gets the ball, or worse it's intercepted by someone no where near where I thought the pass was gonna go. :x

Another thing about D, I play a Half-Court Man on Man, and I like to send a player out front when the opposition is advancing, who I use to try and steal the ball with (you know, Quick Hands). Every now and then I end up with my damn C out front trying to steal the ball (anyone whos tried stealing a ball using Divac knows what a fruitless exercise this is, although Mihm does better, hes no Kobe Bryant), which leaves me with no "Big Man" at the back for blocks/rebounds, then I frantically try switching to someone else. A play that starts like this usually ends up with one of those ballet moves I mentioned eariler. So any help on how the switching works will help, at least then I'll know when to switch and when not to.
:)

If I ever hope to play on Superstar (I can dream, dreams dont cost anything, right?) Im gonna need to know these kinda things. You can have the best "big man", best shooter, best rebounder, but I you dont know how to pass and switch, you aint gonna win shit.

I think my overall understanding of basketball, the positions, their roles within the context of the game, their responsibilites and the tactics used, is gonna have to improve drastically before I could ever be successful on Superstar. Im sure most of you guys played basketball at some or other level or at least watch games weekly and therefore have that understanding. Although I knew of basketball as I game and even some of the rules, my appreciation of the game has come from playing NBALive. So next time theres a game on I wont flip the channel. :)

Sorry Im rambling on and on, one other thing. While going through the matchup reviews, some thing confused me. I thought you played each team in your conference 4 times and the others twice, which seems almost correct except for 4 teams in my conference that I only played 3 times ??? Is this corect ?? and if so how does that work ??

Thanks again for your help..

If you play on superstar you're going to need to play really hard defense. Lots of full court presses and double teams. I stick to all star and adjust the sliders to make it tougher if you need to.

I just started playing Live 2005. Before that, I hadn't played the game since back when it was called "Lakers vs Celtics and the NBA Playoffs", so this is all new to me.

As a noob, I'm finding a big jump from Starter to All-Star and it's driving me mad. At Starter level, I'm beating teams by 35 points per game. I once beat a team by 88 points. That's no fun. But when I play All-Star level, I lose by 15 points per game. That's no fun either. Besides making BIG differences in the sliders, how the *?#@ can Starter and All-Star be so different?

The problem at all-star and superstar is the comeback code. At least that's what I think. did you ever realize that when you're up by around 10 points at the start of the 4th quarter, the cpu starts hitting 4-5 in a row and you can't make a simple layup? Your best PG turnig over the ball over again and again? You can only hope to interrupt these runs by playing crazy defense, which needs a lot of practice. If you intend playing 12 minute quarters, I recommend playing on all-star. I do it myself. I would be fit for the superstar "challenge", but it is just too unrealistic. If you don't block your opponents, they will hit due to that damn comeback code. So, your shooting guards end up either with 10-12 blocks, or you get blown away. That's where all-star works better. I once held Michael Redd (one of the most feared players in live '05)down to 10 points in a 48 minute game. (around 25% FG, 2/11 3-pointers) But it was hard work and switching on defense all the time. So guys, its all about practice. If you get blown out in you first 10 games on all-star, so be it. You'll get the hang of it by just playing on. A season has 82 games, you know...

If you're losing all the time by 15 points the first time you switched to all star you're doing okay. Just don't shoot a lot of three pointers, double team in the post every time and run doubles at the best shooter whenever he touches the ball. The biggest problem I had when I switched to all star was I would try and come back with three point shots and that just won't cut it. Make your comebacks with defense and call for picks alot so you can get to the basket.

I start playing on Superstar as soon as I get the game, maybe that's why it's sorta easy to me... I had no idea so many people struggled with it

On All-Star difficulty, I'd guess the best way to get to the basket is call a pick and also use the freestyle control too. The spin move from a pick becomes your best friend. Also drive and dish alot, you're alot more likely to make a shot that's semi contested in all-star mode. On defense, don't go for steals because 8 times out of 10 your player will lunge and the opposing PG will just drive straight to the hoop.

well, my first game on all-star after reading these comments, i managed to lose only by 3 (i had to come back from 22 down with 3 minutes left), then i won the next four games (vs minnesota, dallas, memphis and milwaukee...not great teams but i'll take it). i found that passing a lot seems to somehow get somebody open for a shot. and yes, defense helps with comebacks b/c i still am having a tough time with threes on all-star mode...

i also found that tyson chandler, though he sucks posting up, has a slow but decent crossover that still beats most of his opponents. he also has a bigger dunk range than eddy curry, who apparently needs to be right under the basket to dunk or else he'll fling some crazy finger-roll shot at the hoop. in the four wins, chandler's averaging 43 ppg!
